And -- I read the book I call Bobby back and try to tell my wonderful was by that time I didn't reach -- and I think -- did his health deteriorated. But about two weeks after he passed away get an email from his wife -- Who said issues going through Bobby's office she found the book that Bobby signed for Jon Lester threw that we presented it to him."...
[12:07] ..." San Diego Padres come across the board today so VEI -- Jimmy Fund radio telephone. Red Sox in the Jimmy Fund have been great partners"...
[0:00]" Our body joke a stately on this just popped -- down here in a joke -- voice of the Red Sox and has been for zillion years but but more importantly. Joe has been heavily involved over the years. With Jimmy Fund dating back of course to the great Ken Coleman who. I thought was was the inspiration and kept this thing going for many many years first radio thought I ever did was with Ken Coleman. Years ago -- been a big big part of it it's great to see."
[0:26]" You get off Icelandic Kenny introduced me that Jimmy Fund when they brought me here in 1983. And he was the Jimmy fighting was the chairman and they was mr. radio 52 going around a little stations in New England raising three or 4000 dollars and that. He really started this whole thing in he'd be so happy to see what we're doing."
[0:45]" No question in if it's funny because I was having this back -- conversation with David -- look over said the same thing to be said. It was Kenneth Cole while doing this because of canned culminate tonight it's going to get very emotional here. In the in the ballpark when ninety McGill every finishes his fifth. At some but first of all welcome to Boston I can't hear you on the radio last night indeed do you story. And it's an uplifting one because things are going so well maybe you can repeat it to people that. The might of tuned out Joe last night for some sort of the summaries I talk to my commercials on the crazy yeah."
[1:28]" God I was still I was -- last night NASCAR. Oh sorry what everybody relate to your broadcast Joe DiMaggio we get -- answer about that last night. Well. -- asked Ellis Myles I can't. You don't deserve this -- is a -- Dotel but this was good riddance don't last night he didn't tell me -- one of more athletes."
[1:49]" But I don't shoot straight because it's a great two months ago I had prostate surgery. Probably two months before that. As part of my regular physical I was diagnosed with a unfortunately. It's it's a type of cancer. That is very treatable provided to you go in for regular check up it's as simple check up this party regular physical is just part of your blood test. And if you find it early it's it's very treatable. I chose. The robotic type surgery that Da Vinci machine it's called -- The basis basically instead of -- a doctor. I can liken it to rotator cuff surgery if you had a thirty years ago total baseball kind of attitude and -- your shoulder and your career was in jeopardy and now they go in with a couple of probes that it's very. Much less invasive this is the same thing. The doctor would be where you are I would be lying down here and he looked through three D screen. There's six things inside view in. Two days later I walked two miles in my neighborhood which which they encourage you to do. -- had a catheter for a week and after that week I was pretty much back to normal so. -- if you have to have a former cancer this is a form to have I. In no way you feel like any kind of hear the hero are the kids that you bring through here and talk to all day long the -- at the Dana Farber institute. Most kids -- heroes justify your there's only see it -- five year old girl -- can you -- 29 years now my two years of treatment at each fine I can't imagine that -- I'm almost embarrassed to be part of the show after she was on here because. I don't feel that way at all this. I could've gone inferred from knee surgery and probably been more discomfort than I was for this but. Did that didn't the only message I would delivers to people who shy away from a physical because if you wait too long. Then this can be a fatal form of cancer and and and for some reason people are very reluctant to go in and have this test done in this such a simple -- here's why you should not be embarrassed to be honest broadcast first focus were on it but more."
[3:51]" It's. More."
[3:53]" But more importantly. In that your story got out -- few months ago people heard about it. Now people are hearing the result of that. Right because of that people are going to listen to what you're saying that's good and they got it going here they're going to get tested -- and you know I don't mean to minimize that I I just. You know when you come in and you see the kids here. You see blood. The Jimmy Fund is all about not did someone in my position doesn't have a serious illnesses well but. Found if if there are people they go out and get tested and find it early and find a cure and have the same surgery I did then then I'm glad they are pitching he's from Pittsburgh you're going to chill guy so you knew you knew about the -- so yeah absolutely sure about it in. Do you ever get tired by the way to broadcast with a lineup I mean is there ever -- we finally just sit there it's there won't be the first -- the other night with the Red -- but well we could hear the Tigers sit there and sit out -- one out this lineup is just killed we were worn out the other night after that nineteen to seventeen games but you know we've become a team. In -- way offensively like like the Yankees -- like the red -- he's from. I think in that when you play our team you're going to be out the field for a long time unfortunately. Our pitching hasn't caught up with -- hitting yet. And not only our hitters up for a long time our fielders are on the field."
[5:09]" You know now -- on the pace to give -- 970. -- the last -- that is unbelievable that I got to give props to -- is big because the other night is that -- ground -- out right there with the yellow line because no -- bullpen -- the -- make -- any -- asked about it wow that's what I want to ask because I'm told that the Rangers broadcasters Hussein -- they blew the -- in the the only one in the ballpark -- and I was wrong because I thought that if he -- the left of that -- that you -- with Joe. Joe had it right -- straight you guys out on the starter and we didn't know we we didn't. Get quite as strong as they made a mistake we couldn't figure out what the yellow line was or fortunately Steve Palermo. The form is -- ego -- I was there and I gotta be honest that's why had to write a half hours they were sitting I don't know. I don't know it shows little bowl and he explained that it is from a high wall to a low wall moon hits and goes into the stands it's a home -- what the line is for is -- to the right of the line. Then comes back I'm still homeless Oklahoma now and if he hits a lefty goes out it's tantamount to a ball in the top of the wall and going out right like a regular home run as -- know the other place that information was. Was in the red -- media gallery gosh we want spot 600 page I don't watch."
[6:20]" Why is it guys that we are suddenly having all of these controversies now to the point where we're gonna go to video replay on home run calls now I don't remember. Controversies like this over the years maybe it's because we didn't have my definition television."
[6:34]" And we did that yellow lines from a -- runs in ballparks are headlines as we have here in left field and it's I think the way the new ballpark more than anything you can take it to this people there most said that. He felt if you went around to all the ballparks and cleaned up the area around the fence in other words. If if you they can't do it. If you move -- back to where someone can't lean out over the fence that would eliminate that problem. Some of the foul poles like the one in Yankee Stadium -- Edward -- out of their ball. I was -- Sunday -- the -- just got so yeah -- yeah but did you know evidently there's ways to -- so that wouldn't happen but those stadiums have been -- for a long -- why it's happening now and -- coming -- now rather than two years -- I don't know price -- here this -- can easily -- Fenway. And they're working with some cameras and trying to find out down how. Accessible we'll be with petty shots they can get."
[7:29]" Was it Cleveland last year were actually went off the top of the wall with top of the wall. Was still considered in play was right. Yes let's talk just a Orioles doesn't make any sense how you know if you if you hit the ledge on the top and it continues on that's got to be a home run lead -- Well there's one in Yankee Stadium where here on the ledge stayed up late my coach John RR a Romo."
[7:50]" I was just out there now when you saw what happened though last week that was even more bizarre it was we know we're not one ask you real quick as we -- from Pittsfield right you don't get a lot of Pittsfield baseball players but if we had. You win and certainly -- Kenny wrigley CI new years ago quite some when they -- Abreu I think -- and maybe the Indians in in Jeff -- the question of always one nasty did you cross paths with there against Atlanta back in the -- detail on the Mark Martin."
[8:17]" Mark was four years ahead of me we had you know just briefly to tell you kind of funny story but. We used to go to watch is basketball games he was a thirty was the greatest basketball player of all time was -- basketball player New England his senior year they played. In Boston garden in the New England tournament these -- New England turn that back then they got beat by -- team from Hartford by a couple of points mark scored like 35 points anyway. I was in ninth grade and my friends and I all went to the basketball games in the old armory -- got there early sat right behind the bench and watched him play. He played on a legion team. That came in third in the country played against Dave McNally steam from Montana runs last dobbs from New Orleans frustration came in third he was probably the fourth or fifth best hitter on that team. And as young kids you don't appreciate a shortstop and -- fans love you so when he signed his bonus contract with the Orioles we all said. We didn't even know we was that good we -- know it was they we thought he was a basketball player we didn't always based NW probably your first round pick but -- Washington sent -- threatened -- I was a first round draft pick 'til now only -- only father son team to this day I think right to be number Jeff Burroughs and his son already Ryan Harvey -- yeah -- champ car their car was also from -- there you go. Another none of my and we we have an -- educational -- now as you probably you know we have -- station -- there all assuming -- there's no real -- today were -- what -- part of I want to find -- five of -- you -- you -- impressed -- the you know -- western -- sports that's very impressive -- went to the same high school I did -- was -- played -- was an excellent football player high school he was eight years behind me. Funny story about Rick please see our triple a manager was Rick -- Rich Donnelly when I was -- And rich got kicked out of a game and suspended for a week -- police he was in our system playing AAA baseball. Joe Klein sent me and Joe and sent me to played the senators finally did yeah yeah not sent me a Wichita. To manage the team for a week -- while while I while luck rich was gone. First game of the doubleheader I write the lineup out -- police he's batting sixth. Seventh -- top of the seventh were down by two runs strictly -- it's a three run homer -- when the first -- and and I only game in -- first game -- the home -- I don't know until I'm great thank you very much for stopping -- and we're so happy -- negative happens it has -- you know we thank you Joe's -- with -- tomorrow it is pleasant --"
[10:41]" Tomorrow would be -- for the game of course right after the game tonight that Todd Mercer Bobby sun's gonna be MM Bobby Abreu was. All our fabulous and then we just lost a -- of weeks ago quick story I don't really this tonight. About a month ago got a call from Bobby is a good friend of mine and then he wanted Jon Lester is addressed to send in his book. But about two weeks after he passed away get an email from his wife -- Who said issues going through Bobby's office she found the book that Bobby signed for Jon Lester threw that we presented it to him."
