[0:00]" Michael joins us live game winning hit last night here on our studios at Fenway Park you don't. I'm doing five -- all right now that Klesko just little I don't know what's the weather or whether it is. And I'm certainly changed in this town and it's very. If we're talking about this earlier in the show. And the Indians like the skull open had a -- it is it's it's different happy drunks now they better players. Well it is we tell you it's it's a lot different today than it was you know 567 years. You know what I just this is probably a good question for you win win before you came here. Do you have Andy did you have any preconceptions about what it was like to play here with a reputation was a plan Boston."
[0:46]" A little bit you know I think I was in my first four years in -- was this and -- lease for sale lease the week we came here right twice. Fenway Park area was in a nice you know it was like maybe hang -- of one -- two bars but it wasn't like a happening place. I think there was just the mentality of its great to go see the game -- is still there were still drawn pretty well but it was a fact of matter of okay they'll lose in the post season some land that I think Gulfport change them mentality and then. I think it was like an exclamation point last year that now war winners you know. It's a good -- I think it's a good vibe now you know maybe your last -- doesn't feel that way --"
[1:26]" I -- he feels and oh yeah I feel something like I mean you know like right now how does that mentality though. Didn't get a short in the clubhouse -- early element of the players. You guys have gone through some stuff Europe for a while Ortiz is pitching has some bullpen problems and yet here -- the third best record in baseball. The well have a mentality there."
[1:52]" In the sense of how we feel like yeah in the city standpoint you feel about I think we -- well I think we feel like. All the obstacles are coming to us early you know and we're still holding the -- I'm playing good baseball we kind of look it is. How about when David comes back imagine that David -- David in the three hole. JD hit in the way he's been hidden then. You're gonna have you -- and seventh that's a pretty damn good liner Pino and tech in May eighth you know we got two guys at the top we still got that -- speed. I think we're looking optimistically you know obviously we don't want guys to keep going down but we feel like. And it's on any team I think when you have a big market team in a veteran team you have the luxury besides Sean Casey's guys like that. Where they can fill the hole I think he -- a young team a couple guys get hurt they're they're exposed their depth is is really exposed but. Trust you feel like we can hold of sports still play really good baseball. And not one -- bigger than the team -- wanted -- better team with David there's no doubt about it but we can still win without do you."
[2:56]" Do you sense at all Mike in the last and it's easy to say now because he even if you had him in the lineup obviously going to go through stretches we don't score runs. At the same level of you did in April when man. Do you sense at all now that his absence is."
[3:09]" A factor. -- his absence is always a factor you know you're talking about one -- the only run producers over the last five years easily. So I don't think we can replace those numbers but I still think we can win ball games you know. Maybe he would -- home run off Dan Haren two nights ago in the game would have been different but. When you can't I don't know in this game I don't think you can be like what if and we could in because in your dorm on negativity you know. We fail enough as hitters you know we don't want to dog that we want to you know kind of visualize a positive part of -- so. I think we'll -- concerned about when it comes to David is. Houses rehab doing it looks like he's going to take you know batting practice on this road trip now we're going in the right direction for him get back in the lineup and -- we feel like will be even stronger. That's what I told Glen that he wanted to focus on the negative and -- hit a big hit a homer and there's -- weather if you progress. Lugo -- tries to -- doesn't get all wrapped around the kind of squeezed the life obviously you know it in my what do you think is more surprising to you this season Nash from -- Toronto Blue Jays -- last place -- race after just about -- there's -- race -- rays -- right -- just -- game behind again I would -- the -- you know we've -- When it's spring training remember talking about score in the news and it's a pretty good young team you know the thing with youth is that people don't have a track record to Jeremy you know you know estimation on how it's -- ago. But it's very similar to the team we had no three. Where you look at that team now you say -- police say put him ago Cabrera EC you know Josh and Brad Penny. Why -- a great team but we knew none of those guys have proven themselves at the times when they all pan out at one time you can really surprised it was so. We thought they had very good pitching and that can win over the long haul. But we I think it without drama the best starting rotation in the game not not our division in all the big leagues oh. I'd say they they're they're a major surprise the -- their record shows. You have trouble scoring runs and on the Frank Thomas thing happened. -- it seemed all go south of them it's weird I mean I'm not in the clubhouse I don't really know but you know you look at their young guys and you look at you know Vernon Wells and Alex Rios and they're exciting good young players you know Scott Rolen you got Lyle Overbay you got guys that come produce so. I don't know sometimes it just doesn't click and maybe they'll click I mean selfishly I really hope they don't -- you know there are division but. Their talent level is much better than their record."
[5:37]" You mention Ortiz a short time ago on his rehab when he comes back he you obviously have a thumb injury early in the air. -- religious and right before you human issue an open golf cart opener and let a couple RBI last night I think now you up to 41 for the season which is pretty close to it's not a 120 RBI pace of a year ago but it's pretty close to a hundred RBI pace. Despite having missed a month. When you hurt your thumb did you have any concerns. Given that it happened early in the -- even if I come back and have to be deal with this -- line and it is is it bothering you at all."
[6:16]" Well no versus -- Boller mean I I think he gets tired I noticed like when I. Want to do some more through -- and an angle in the batting practice I feel -- my left hand that easily pass from my right hand but during the game. You know taking -- practiced in May be three swings at the play you know so I don't ever feel tired during the games so. But there was a concern you know you you always want to put up good numbers and I think that's the competitor that's you know you want to put together good year you I feel like about him somewhere in the middle. And I don't have a good year that is a big factor on whether we would lose some games so. I'd save with a number of games I've played them very happy with the RBIs and take David out his. You know what I tell a lot of people is if David Manny would hit as many home runs as they usually do last year I drive in 2530 runs last but David hit fifty doubles. And there's a lot of times people write that guy's first to third there walk and mammy you know so those other kind of those situations that kind of help me out I think we got a nice and last who had as well I think we have a nice. Balance of guys that can do damage you know yeah -- with a good RBI and even even Dustin and in the tool you know he's got a good amount RBI so. I think we've we've shown that we can kind of keep though I'm going and keep putting pressure on the on the defense lot of guys here that can knock in runs Richardson and the potential -- you see the power unity I think we got five guys in double digits already you know in in. To have five body in nine guys maybe in the with twenty plus. That's starts. That's good run support you know that's and that's a good way to you know oppression and put some damage on how satisfying for years have been this year few times more than -- time to should've walked -- to you when you -- him a lot. You -- take that personally when that stuff happens over the last part of it did I say there was dust them before me I'd take it personally. He knows that but it is Manny you can't you know I mean you're talking about for me the best right handed hitter I've ever seen. Sure fire first ballot hall of Famer and on the -- map no I I I -- like it to be honest with you -- is. If Manny makes an out dominant with runners on second third and two outs and they walk -- bases loaded one I feel like if there's any situation in the game more I want to hit. It's a runner on third less than two outs and I don't really care a second third or bases loaded because I at least for me what works is I try to focus on gimmick guy from third him. If the guy for second comes in as well as great in the if you pop one out it's even better but I I just noticed that. If I try to really do something my swing gets long on the pop up to shorten -- get anyone you know and it worked for them but. Twice this year I know they walk guys that -- grand slams. I got a little extra mile. I always run around the basket I donated that's for sure the last night when Europe widget a tool talent in the big hit -- how do you stay aggressive in that situation right there you know Jason struggled with a base open. You know I I -- I'm thinking I'm taking account like at 3 count one pitch one spot because. I think in the back my mind if they were going to pitch around me those first two pitches when have been that close I think it would have been maybe fires in the third or maybe receive your over aggressive and chasing. So I tried his own and and you know my strength is you know out over the plate middle and you know not looking for something on the block away because. Even if I crushing it to fly out to right so right about it's it's hard to -- address that situation I think got a double malls simplify things instead of trying to look at the big picture just -- a -- that I'm Mets I don't know maybe other guys do different things but I kind of a couple of years ago."
[9:42]" You're you're going to plan if you're -- came over from the national -- probably new book an awful lot of -- these pitchers but -- new guys on a regular basis the fact that you don't see. The National League pitchers an awful lot more work involved in preparing for this."
[9:57]" Absolutely yeah I think you take your video work you use a lot more you know I'd say when my face. Ching Ming Wang and and -- them look at video for thirty seconds and I got sixty at bats against -- he's been doing the last time or not but you know. You know that -- Dan Haren even if he was in the American League last year we only played Oakland imports on them I think I have seven career at bats you kind of want to see what he's been doing that -- you're gonna go up their guests and but you know you have a plan of but what has been successful for him lately and I think the biggest adjustment though interleague or for me actually and 6 when I switched over league's. Is the relief pitchers because you might want to have that to a bats. And you know guys like Brandon Morrow for Seattle you know he's coming in 95 with a curve ball and you can say -- got to curve -- but some guys it seems like you pick it up early some guys it's -- you know you need that experience of those plate appearances to kind of allow you to make your adjustments I think just in that then that uncertainty of not have him at bats against guys. Is what kind of I guess separates the the difference from. The pitchers in your division."
[11:04]" You mentioned Pedroia a short time ago and again we were talking at this little bit before you came in in terms of the difference between. Playing for the Red Sox now and maybe and I know you weren't here 567 years ago but. You've got young guys coming in here and now whether it's. Leicester and go back to last who went in the game at the World Series or what have Pedroia rookie of the year now Ellsbury is on pace for seven steals. Why are these guys are able to play so well in this market now is it strictly a credit to their talent is it more."
[11:36]" Going on them now there's a lot more I think. This is a tough market to plan and and there's not a lot of I think it was kind of out of -- or -- that we keep Pedroia. That long leash last year that doesn't seem like those though the normal way things are done and that not embossed I think it's -- any market with there's a lot of pressure. I think these guys have talent and I think they have a good mental makeup to play in this in this environment because I've always said. When I was with the Marlins. I think that's an atmosphere that caters to you to develop your talents now after you put the numbers 23 years. You kinda have that credibility in your back pocket -- you know you can do it then if they send you somewhere else you'll be fine but a lot of guys when they're young. Sometimes I don't know maybe they doubt themselves a little bit more and when year BM. Scrutinized day in day out have to answer questions that's -- that's an added distraction and added. And added I guess toughness in playing in cities like this so. The first ship that talent they got to get here with the talent but the way they handle things you gotta you gotta credit their mental makeup and chemicals along way and I think it helps us tremendously because. We can we filter in new guys you know we got -- got a great mix you know and that allows us I think. To really continue being a competitive team -- I'm sorry Brian can veteran guys helped at all I mean it only oh I think the atmosphere we provide the clubhouse felt that. My answer yeah we're we're I think. Tito is huge on allowing us to be loose allowing us to be who we are you know army some geyser. Headphones and tense before the game -- they're in their locker and other guys there. You know. Playing cards after batting practice you know watering a sandwich in -- Whatever works the bottom line is you've got to produce you knew everyone reproduce those larger producing. You to -- you know I think Tito is a silly way to prepare your way. And I think what young guys see. Lester solved Schilling you know right now and everything but he also solved Beckett who never misses is -- and so. There's tragedies and maybe take a little bit of both you know I think they filtering nicely. But I think the other way around you see what energy that Ellsbury plays on the bases that might make many want to go first to third really kind of works both ways but I do think the veterans help the young guys."
[13:53]" More -- the -- the veterans are spread out to where you got you know Mike Timlin in the bullpen you know yeah like you said she'll wake -- you always been here longer than anybody and Beckett when he does. You know yourself. In Jason for position bowlers and you as a really good it. Answer their questions you know you get to make -- feel comfortable which when you get the big leagues comfort is the first and thank you need it do you feel comfortable that you count to take over. Mike might have and -- you know obviously if you treated chime in here too it's have you ever been on a team win a the veterans were not receptive to young players -- and uses -- like what happens with the Dodgers last year it sounds like. They had a lot of issues the in the and the team essentially get divided between. Older players and young."
[14:39]" That's that's the whole team chemistry thing that a lot of people say it means nothing and I believe it's huge I don't think. Your talent becomes better if you get along better but all that other stuff can be put aside and I think you have bad chemistry you can destroy a team that has good talent. And I think -- you have good chemistry you can maybe do things that you weren't expected to do. Personally my first big league experience allows called up in 98 with the Yankees and I thought that was a very complete team. Although they have big personalities you aegis all the way they played Nolan hit thirty home runs. You know it was Tino Martinez in a year and Bernie Williams and Joe Girardi and you saw -- his disguise atrocious for someone that absolutely. And I -- those guys you know. No one seemed to put themselves above the team they just like the way things were going and that that teams -- in -- morn -- in a row. And they kind of waltz to the playoffs so. I guess in my mind house like man -- a way to do it appears they just annihilate everyone I want a world -- humans seem like it was a very easily done. When I got so Marlins we were all young so there was there was -- anyone to. Disrupt anything you know but I think in that sense there's very satisfying is -- true we did well we were the same guys. You know and it was the same infield as it was in 99 when we lost you know 98 games and we are pumped up as we -- number."
[15:57]" we might tell you mentioned Terry Francona he is a master of the year with a push all the right buttons and make you guys all feel comfortable with situation and now with with with. Man he's a hamstring before the DH -- it's -- but the way -- handle. Coco and Ellsbury that situation beginning of the season that a lot of club -- could become a major distraction and it didn't."
[16:17]" Absolutely and I think that's where good open a lot of communication is very important and I I was skeptical are you going to keep both those guys happy -- Egan and that that's it just seems like the season works out that way and they're both very important to us you know him. But I think being open ambien and sometimes. Be an open is telling them the truth and not really what they want to hear but as long as they know where they stand I think most most players will appreciate."
[16:43]" One more thing before we let -- on this very subject it's amazing when you talk about the blend of all of these different players you're young players and not only very very talented guys. It while confident she could even say that some of the real cocky out there and I'm wondering how that blends in. With veteran players based on what you talked about with Tito allowing players to the who they are."
[17:07]" I don't -- that as long is I think you go about the way you should when your on the field you know. And in like values -- as an example you know. I won't squabble like he doesn't spring training thing. I feel like I gotta set the bar for closers are like and anxious so flat plate as a -- our way you know and you know what. He's still prepares the same way and and he's ready to go in he puts up the numbers so. If that works for him I don't know probably because I don't think he just respects anyone by being over confident. And I don't think it's overconfidence when you're when your. Rated back it up you know like Lawrence Jackson says -- a target tragedy tobacco for someone so well I was going to ask you because in Florida than people have some of -- criticisms of a -- I think that they would Beckett is. He came out you know he has all the hype that he was the next Nolan Ryan and I hate that it is you know let let's. B Shane Reynolds before we become known -- but. -- thing was. He was very brash coming up and I think he wanted to strike everyone out and he wanted. To show that he was the best pitcher not only on the field that day but in the stadium and around the league. Now I think if you ask him. Maybe that was in the perfect way to go about it but experienced leads you to to know what you're doing well which are not so. I rather have a guy that wants to shall we he's the best player that have the guys show me that he can light up the radar going to campus strikes. So you kind of pick your poison but sure there's times. Where when -- with Florida told Josh Josh you know I want to see you one time when a guy hits a broken bat single. And you get mad I want the next time that guy hits a rocket -- right at someone to be happy you know we as the game goes that way. And in but that's -- I love about Josh that he's receptive to a but he still wants to. He's he I think he went to the point where he wanted to embarrass hitters to where he wanted to show people he's the best pitcher and there's a difference."
[19:01]" Michaels got a book -- obviously it's called deep -- a couple of positive what goes on. Yes it's going you know and I'm sure we'll ask brad yeah -- out. It's going great Caracas at least Bradford is now wearing you know like grown a couple days ago there isn't close to those illegal animal -- that he was apparently wasn't going to try to get a tie in the whole thing but it's a terrific book and you you'll find a lot more about -- Life as well he picked up the -- And as I said I was Hispaniola -- respects that with the judge has great."
[19:34]" You know it was actually I I was gonna have to actually write things in in -- I can't stand and you. -- but it was actually a much easier I spoke alive you know like he would tell me. He'll tell me about your Little League days and I'd try to rambling humorous much in for the camp. In two a tape recorder and then he put jumper in the -- what -- you thinking in the we've got to make adjustments so. I actually enjoy -- he's kind of has that dry humor in which kind of get along pretty."
[20:03]" I -- a fairly stuff was never address tremendous lot of stuff that we did was stretch snappy Dresser and now. Opera joining us today Michael gets himself on ETV it was in two LG VEU. Falling asleep -- touch screen with Bluetooth technology two point zero. Megapixel camera and an MP three player -- AT&T dot -- back slack. Wireless AT&T your world -- great team like all right I'm good thanks guys gamble doing bends my my goal right here on --"
