" Dave Lewis -- head coach of the Boston Bruins this in studio we will take your calls from now until. The hours up big show will be in here at the top of the hour if you're ready I think they're all lined up and ready so Dave in east and you -- first on Sports Radio with Dave Lewis. I what's going on day -- hit an --"
" I just academic game oriented questions for you sure you know it has it been bothered me in itself that that it's -- forwards on the I'll play as defenseman in the of people with short handed goals and that was -- spirit on spot all year. As what we did it take on you know your. Why do you do that Michael breaks up the line then Apollo play these kind of scrambling during the 12 point eight. On the line to kind of switched apartments one little white is that."
" Well for RT particularly at the time of the design if you look at the design charter is the warm long player on tops of bard is on one side at the top of the circle I'm Patrice Bergeron is on the other side. And kind of an umbrella and I'm thoroughly for lack of yeah that's -- a hockey term of it. It's it's a risky way to play a power play because you -- results on me and we'd look our power play was pretty consistent all season long but we gave up way too many goals so that's the one thing is coach is we've addressed other teams do that some teams -- five forwards. On on the -- one time partly because of personnel and that was one of the big reasons why we get that we wanted to have a -- and shot on. The spot where Patrice Bergeron was. And marks of hard being a left hand shot where he was and he was sort of the quarterback were char it was more a shooter Patrice Bergeron brings the puck up so -- dynamics of what was was good but the result wasn't good enough on because. You know all we gave up I think it was 18 or 19 shorthanded goals so we got 70 power play goals but you know -- shorthanded goal changes the effect of a team and sometimes we got -- point where we are -- our power play which was wrong. And it either was a make or break point force in the particular game. And some games it did win other games and had a real a major impact the most losing -- we have talked about that we've talked to vote. Restructuring it we've talked about not so much changed the personnel but restructuring and depending on what happens in the offseason it's an area that like a lot of areas for group we can improve on but for the most part we got a lot of good production. Paul in Arlington you're next on Sports Radio with Dave Lewis."
" Yes thank you can't say hello -- it and Paul. I cannot forgive it for the category but I -- them -- I first -- but that's okay is still made mr. clean yet."
" It was I was there."
" I know I now but you know at the time he wasn't a -- My hand my question is do you scale that it would be hit -- sang that we need one go into defenseman in between three to four flawless"
" she other than that how's your team out of -- Well yeah well for example -- Tim Thomas had a a career year I thought he. You know we showed up -- and play hard every game he played in some games are better than others and I think at the -- he -- also was a lot of pressure on him because from never being a number one goalie in this league just that in itself is a lot of pressure and then it knowing at at certain points in the season and the coaches choose the players too that the second goal he was was never as consistent as you like to have I don't know what you backups to rate we're bridges to coldly. And that was one area that we have to we have to get better -- we have to prove that because you know. We have to we have to do better job of that -- you know we don't have Marty brodeur in his -- mr. from the -- gave everything had. And he just sort of world the end now the other question was defensive forwards to a defenseman in three -- all rough grass I wish we can go to kmart picked those guys up but. You know we've talked about issues we talked about things that we would like to do and like to get we've got you know marched through Murton in and Providence -- you know he's ready to play ethnic in the NHL next season got a couple young kids -- was came up and and played pretty well for us as young forward on so you know we'd like to be able to think that we're developing players on to be ready for next season. And even know everybody likes to be accelerated I think that -- leasing some good science of some of the young guys. And then of course we have some free agents available in in the offseason July 1 market starts and those things have been talked about it we talked Horry threw to draft -- on the sell your next on Sports Radio with Dave Lewis."
" I don't I don't could have been -- bothered -- out this year not only losing on the scoreboard but getting pushed around -- they are awful lot. I was wondering if you might be targeted I at Peter's school or forward. But here it stopped just not that's what your captain would be of interest in 80 sticking up Christina -- but what it is --"
" Yeah I think that's of that course I think Zdeno Chara will do that he's a presence is a physical presence and he probably didn't do that in irregular fashion this year but sometimes it's not so much you have to do to raise your fashion have to do to right time. And I think that timing going away for -- I would like to be able to pick up players that that have some grit that can battle to fight for teammate but more partly support team -- at the right time some of those players you mentioned other big strong guys they don't necessarily play a lot. But winners as trouble on the -- he seemed to be the guy go to -- understand that that's sort of -- a philosophy of of hockey in the last 50 years. And we would like it is in our situation we've addressed that we -- of a more grit and somebody that you can depend on. And I talked to these guys off -- a foxhole environment and just being the kind of guy. That you can count on in any situation where he's a big our little guy would be your face and just say he can't do that."
" My teammate a table let's go back on Jim effort it took. We get a -- in the second a lot of people do ask about Chara and he didn't have a completely at one fight all year not that. Fighting -- that fighting is the is the litmus test form. But if if you guys wanted him to be more physical. Any couldn't if it is was your mental block -- market need that at least one time during the year."
" Well never talk to about the reason why I mean I talked to him a couple times during the season about. Being dominant physical player that he can be his size and his strength in his range of and his intimidating factor and I just think that bat part of his game sort of strayed from him and it's the 11 part of the game and I think furlong times been a constant in his career. Then there's other things going on. That he felt may be more important other than that and sometimes you worst that that would happen sometimes you don't but I think important thing is. That it's been talked about enough people mentioned -- fans have talked about it internally it it's been mentioned. And he sort of ready to assume. To be a better player and I think for him to be a better player he has to assume that and for him to be you know a better captain of the team yes to do -- so those things I think will happen next year."
" Jim in Ludlow your next on Sports Radio -- Dave Lewis."
" He's expensive I have and the show. Coach that it is very classy on the radio as well."
" While I it's it's not easy -- at --"
" At different -- out like comments first I think the day of the salary cap in need to. You should give a guy or Richmond team at least 34 years. Have a positive move forward if I -- not that is happening that I think yeah they should be fired but. They have that because there's injuries there's this there's that especially in the case -- being in disarray. You really -- for years so hopefully get their -- the other thing is."
" So it's a it's it's Odyssey"
" you have at at at. The other wanted to ask was that too much is being -- goaltending what you really need -- speed in -- early disrupts our other teams up currently not what else. -- like to comment on that repeat what Marshall also going to get up."
" I I agree with you you know the best way to play defensive have have the -- to play offense and if you can spend more time in the attacking zone. More time in the neutral zone and less time in our zone it'll create less scoring chances. Less chance of having penalties thus if you have a penalty get into a two minute shorthanded situation I agree with you. We've talked of our fore check we've talked about some of the things in the last few games we tried a couple of different things as a staff. And some of the players response was they enjoyed a bit more I think initially our first man in was not physical enough and that that has to create you have to create contact with the defender or the first man back soft part packer. Whether it be Marco Sturm for example he's a great skater. Get in and create some sort of contact put the first guy. And we found at the second I was a little bit late whether whether by design hurt. Well wasn't by design we want him in there you're just a little bit following up to play so that's one area that we've talked about and we're going to address to try to. Play more in the attacking zone and in keeping pucks in so we don't spend as much time winners -- Dennison Revere you're next on Sports Radio at Dave Lewis."
" If guys really don't I just got a couple quick questions in my lifetime -- played hockey you know all my life. The only game -- not a good -- doesn't really do know again the first the first question I have was. And as they approach he took Marco Sturm he was that. It was kind of -- of -- quite a lot of season when he all the polar opposite side regain his scoring touch. As -- I -- they a similar approach to brad Boyes might have been more line is supposed to give up pomp and acquiring a player I know it's almost certainly appear involved in the still -- given up parliament. Acquiring a player what would last proven track record."
" Well you know it's brad -- is great great guy and you've got to know we got to know personally and you know he played with Patrice Bergeron last year I know we have a strong finish -- this year he didn't start with the trees but he he ended up playing 30 to 40 games with them on his we may -- not 430 plus anyway. And you know the result was never one that we are waiting to see. So all at the trade deadline we have talked about you know some different type of players that we needed and one of the players that we think is important for defense as a player that can move the puck. That Xiang and he can work with and try to develop so that was on the gist of that and you know it's it's a trade it's it's over now also now you know we have Dennis whiteman and saint Louis as brad -- and Normal -- huge question where you'd like to answer but it was a situation where. Organizational we felt that this we had to do at that time and we still believe in."
" Well let me ask you the follow up where I think he was going with this the brad Stuart deal we all I think sort of understood he wasn't going to re sign here you traded him to Calgary because you were going to be able to keep them. Where meal on your Tina Paul Mara or brad Boyes dealt because Dave -- on the team anymore."
" Well it's more of that's a tough question. You know with up well with your scene he hit he wasn't playing ahead of a lot of different people so his ice time was he was in the third pair all the time because you know he wasn't better some of the guys -- had a moment an eagles to Washington he's playing a lot more minutes. And good for him we get a draft pick back for him so was situation where you know Peter everybody we felt that that was necessary thing to do. The other trades I just mentioned brad -- trade and and the reasons why. And and the Paul march trade we get -- war three time Stanley Cup winner really important in the locker room. We don't have a lot of guys -- the one in that locker room when I think that's really important even though people tend to forget about it. The communication with each other. What it's like to win what do you do in a situation postings are all something we were looking for. And -- is I know him from I know him from Detroit -- days that I coached there. And he has a real positive influence is a big guy he's a strong guy. And he was something that that we didn't have it and that's we're happy to have them and I know new York's. You know happy on the other end of -- so it's it's he -- for trade try to improve your hockey team -- not immediately. Down the road and I think DC but all of them that's that's the biggest reason and that's why we did that we just don't do it. To get rid of a guy because we don't like him personally I want to have the players on the team that we think we can win west and if not immediately may be. You know a couple of months or maybe six months from now."
" Mike's in Melrose Mike you're next on Sports Radio -- Dave Lewis."
" I don't sort of like my question circled around younger goalies especially -- It took a raft -- critical for filling picture Mardy. All matters. You like to see a guy take it slow and you don't get a few mister Morris scored column wherever handle that would carry what they've -- that -- that is going to be pressure to. Put him up too early next season if let's say to quote and also struggling if you play really well well."
" Yeah they're they're probably will be a certain amount of pressure but I agree refused. The best scenario for young players and goaltending is is probably the most difficult position of playing all hockey. Is to get acclimated to now for him to the American hockey league -- small ranks. And then the next step is to the NHL and the way shooters can shoot in the traffic in Europe it's a big rank. It's a different paced game we don't have the body contact he won't have a traffic in front of -- And yet all the reports we get back that he's a tremendous tremendous goaltender with great presence and really. Reads the play while in Andy's his movement is solid and good and he's learned a valuable experience and you know we're hoping that like I said earlier in the conversation that you like to be able to do. What's right for the player but everybody wants everything accelerated because there's such a demand on. You know on success and that's the -- we have to take in consideration."
" For sure you know -- what one of the cliches in all of sports when someone takes over franchise. I always say we need to change the culture here -- and and those of us who have seen the Bruins do business before Peter surely Kaman all we know that that cliche we blew that cliche they needed to change the culture a lot of players want to come here. What what progress if if any did this organization take in 20062007 in terms of changing this atmosphere."
" I think a lot of it is internal I think that you you wouldn't -- meeting dorsett. So much on the -- which is the most important area to change it. But I think you have to start with little steps and I think in the locker room the travel hotel. Like little things that mean a lot the player better hotel decades better travel better meals better for now for example at the garden. Every game day we have a meals served to the players I don't know if they did that the past or not that was one of things that we implemented in training camp for example training camp and barbecued try to get the guys together to form some. Continuity and and you know being around each other and say thank you for the training camp thanks trainers for helping -- the training camp. And the staff and and the people like that so little things the -- trip that the father strip was another huge had a huge response from the families -- parents -- and children of course and everybody enjoyed at the light that dynamics it's it's a great great opportunity for the parents. To actually live in their child's eyes for you know whether it's your four games -- you know just a short trip like that. So all of these things are pluses pluses pluses the improvement in the locker in the locker -- been upgraded. And at today's game on restricted free agents. You have to sell little bit like the college like a polished it what you have to offer as a franchise what you have to offers an organization. We're about a city house to travel. You know how to guys in Iraq -- staff -- a penetrator Jim going to doctors you have you get helped out a -- can arrange a new found was coming in wife is pregnant after doctors and and schools and things like that that we've concentrated a lot of -- trying to do that at least. This year and like is that I don't know how was done in the past. And that's not for -- to comment on I just know all that we're trying to do these things as a coaching staff in in the our you know on our time here."
" Whitman you're next on Sports Radio -- Dave Lewis."
" I guess I don't happen much about that my question is how would seem like certain guy is on the far post and then -- certain veteran players. A lot of -- the tacos or. Have a good example Sean Donovan was brought -- provide great energy but certainly six games and killing -- to -- pass against that got played to touch anybody. The only part of six goals and 11 established so what exactly -- guy like that bring into the table to justify his 15 minutes I mean I think Jeremy reachable but he did. To be -- it was important -- you don't say and I just had. I don't understand at a guy like that would you guys were looking for a great player well on the trading deadline and he's looking in the mirror and say I'm doing my job."
" Well that's a legitimate question late Jeremy reach came in and did above and beyond what I think we all thought he could -- greedy fought first teammate shore up every game. Didn't play a lot of minutes up latest position well got pucks in the park so. And was there every night whether it's on the -- home. -- Donovan could have done a better job -- yours -- I thought that we got him as the four -- we want to get him three turnovers. And and make -- and things like that and just be a guiding count on every night and some nights she was there are some nights she wasn't there and that's. Part of the inconsistency of -- words he's a veteran guy that you know we looked for. A little bit more than he gave us on a regular basis of some nights she was there he shored up other nights he didn't -- I don't have a beef with that question. And it's sort of exemplifies a couple of things that we want to we want to change greatness is really important for us as a team. It's important for you fans and it's important win hockey games we have to become gritty here. At certain levels everybody can't be -- the two guys that are expected have to be doing a better dollar."
" Chris is in Grafton you're next on Sports Radio -- Dave Lewis."
" Got an element I don't follow what the problem is that -- had this year so it was a five on five politically was because of a lack of about 12 teams beat. How aggressive do you think -- beagle in the offseason going after guys with the Jason Blake or Chris Drury guys go really had in the it also that topic especially like Atlanta Jason Blake would be Kirk had a kick out in the players but our gratitude they got into -- well I capitalism."
" I think he can address whether the five on five issue was one 'cause I think it's certainly one yeah it was a big issue force or 55 production was not good enough was not consistent enough. And that's what I talked earlier our power play -- the brunt of a lot of games for us to win -- lose so we have to be better at that team speed is is an important part of it. And some nights. We didn't have enough of -- tonight that's one of the reasons why you can fore check stronger mean. He can always score in a rush what you have to have guys that are quick enough to get in their create turnovers. And work as a group of five to keep the pucks in the offensive zone. And greedy enough to get to the net that was another issue that we talked to bolts of team speed and grip as far as guys paying the price. And getting to the front of the net. Because it's a dirty dirty way to play and if you watch the playoffs right now. A lot of the goals are scored right there rarely do you seek him -- off the wing and just a shot go win on a goaltender for it is it's a bad goal and -- so those the areas that we talked about and you know -- aware of that we've talked about that. As far as teams beat goes first team -- those guys -- do that how how the turnover on the team during the season. Affect your coaching. Having all these new guys coming. Well we -- through different a process we went through digging in your collection of players sort of becoming a team then we we start that we put together some games for awhile. And then there was you know -- out of office of the right word of every distraction with you know with the Stewart trade. Him not going to be dock and I think it affect the summary guise of and we went through another bit of -- transition with the restaurants and -- sue court suited come did not play very much -- get your ward late in the got wide and late so that we got who else we porch and Penske so we picked up we've gone through a couple of different scenarios in one season and I said this earlier that as a team we didn't spend a lot of time together in the context of teams like New Jersey or you know a lot of the other teams Carolina buffalo. And that will help us I think going into next year that now we've spent at least a year together charge spent a year or some parts of arts and a year Bergeron. They spent a year of Axelsson and Marie and the same with all the other dynamics of repairs of that will definitely. Going into training camp that's going to be better for us."
" One of the things stable be doing later on this summer is heading up the Dave Lewis fantasy camp which takes place in August -- remember right. Dates here but I believe it's an -- yes ought August 13 in the 18. On Don Sweeney Rick Middleton Terry O'Reilly brad park include some current players as well together and these guys off the Bruins teams that are -- town and skate so -- to spend a week as a member of the Boston Bruins in effect it is exactly this facility that the dressing room not a out of the restitution cetera sunset harbors on Boston harbor I mean they got a whole bunch of things. The information if you're interested in participating in being -- Boston Bruin for a week is 24 rate three to -- 020224 rate 3280202 Norman they'll have a great thank you for the one who you want to straighten him out before ego. Because he has picked Calgary to beat between -- will be the endless the military rounds."
" Here are great team in home they've got one of the one of the top five players in hockey again you know they -- in this series -- six games while while our prediction people are jumping off the bandwagon there after this 41 loss I'm going to stick with them they steal the next game in Detroit and run away with the theories."
" They're allowed your support a player that people accountable of the year you. Yeah -- the listener right now I ally date they tell us a bit about this prediction I know of but the odds -- Thank you very much for taking the time to commit 9 the fans were able talked we appreciate it I hope we get a chance to do it again in the future I think they enjoyed the chance yes thank you very much in you know want to make sure everybody -- stands at we are going to be better next year we have to be better in. That's our mandate that's -- we want to do we want to bring the Bruins in the playoffs. Dave Lewis are our guest big show is coming never going to Jeremy -- for will be back"
