Mike and Joe discuss the ongoing Varitek saga and the role Boras plays

" During the press conference to announce the extension of Kevin Youkilis or John Henry had no idea what it was getting into sports after you I know no clue what again I knew he was in trouble for the support guy. So why go there and I try -- I trying to stay out of the wage you know me I'm not -- ruffling feathers low profile ass team. So ice and back. I shouldn't back in the court. The baseball think stepping all these holy baseball writers take themselves very already seriously you don't want to -- Cody ruffle their feathers -- to me. So I just out of my way out of their way. Sit back -- at the back row. In the cooler and really -- that away jumped all over when I was trying to ask a question you don't know allred you know master questions that you're exactly that low profiled second to last row in the corner. And I feel somebody set behind me it's I don't want to make a full card. I don't want to be that obvious you know. What is going -- and -- John Henry that's a podium is not sitting back there with the Red Sox officials. He's -- the media in the back row right behind me and I remember saying to myself. He's going to regret that he's just made now you're just it's too easy -- stop you with the camera. And put your face and he was nice enough to stop and I just -- simple question how do you feel about Jason Varitek at this time what are your thoughts on that situation and he said well. I'm going to see them tonight I probably shouldn't comment. Did you feel it seems that creeping towards about -- order the rove like job let's go out there on the guy opens his mouth he says that they don't want him Tuesday spill the beans. When he didn't have to do. I love this story that the part of that I love and you heard it right there as well on the open. You know how's your relationship -- Boris he says one relationship I think that that pretty much says at all. Though Varitek back to the Sox thing and does he belong here it should get them and you know that thing's been talked to death. We can discuss that as well I'd like to see him back -- like him back is a platoon guy was that means he meant that means he plays half or three quarters or third. I think will be determined by how he hits but it becomes back in the part time player I'm fine with that even if you have to overpay for a back up I'm okay for that. Will discuss that if you like but to me the interesting thing here is the by play between the Red Sox aboard street course in the past I've always give the Red Sox credit. For putting aside whatever. Dealings have to have towards the sky which are probably -- but he's a snake and a liar and as you know. Not not the league deals and good faith all right so whenever you deal and -- got to realize that he lied to -- and is going to be some sneaking around and that sort of stuff. Yet in the past they've always put that aside put aside what has -- personal. Animosity towards a guy dealt a lot of business level. Yet in this occasion after the Mark Teixeira then I think they took it more personally than they ever have. And it got to them worse than it ever did. And now are taking it out on Varitek a little bit. And I'm going to sort of contradict myself and say that's okay I don't play in the I don't mind them for scratching that it."

" I think it's okay to have I think there's gotta be repercussions eventually. When there's a pattern in an agent continues to you know why do you war or steered in the right direction -- Bring you down a path thinking one thing in -- all sudden at the end the rug is pulled out -- something else is reality. And you can afford to do something to almost make an example of an order. You know try to say well if you do that will biological find a mystery team for Jason Varitek that we're we're you mystery team now you know where's the team it's gonna come out of nowhere. And and give him a multi year deal or give him. Enough money and then give the first round draft pick back to the Red Sox they're basically calling his bluff and saying. There's nobody else out there if Varitek comes back it's going to be on our terms which is very short money for one year and he doesn't like that then well that's about it and even then maybe we won't do that -- for young -- and have him -- yeah --"

" You get the sense they feel like they got played -- this year capsule and they -- I think -- We can debate that but the point is they feel that way all right and I think they felt going into it going to Teixeira. And a but the feeling -- We've dealt with you and so many things okay week guaranteed Eric Gagne is bonuses when we have to when we made that trade right and we did. We worked if you want Daisuke we worked with you we only has bonuses they paid for forget -- and he's moving expenses to come to Boston penetrate through went. But above and beyond that I'm gonna take it back did not have a no trade that you have to maybe they did have to all right. Because it -- they worked with them and Eric Gagne. They overpay J. D. Drew by about 25%. And in my opinion probably had in an arrangement before J. D. Drew opted out. All right so they were reports and overpaid jewel and that they work with them on dice didn't work with them on Gagne they build up this relationship. There were moments of animosity in the -- that thing to note it's similar to what went on with Teixeira and -- Varitek and everything else where -- side. The cracks -- come forth they had that like from 11 o'clock PM conference call where there was an angry John Henry. You know when they had that either you're getting on the plane coming with -- not mean they're. It's -- I think building over the last couple years to to this point. Maybe but I'm trying to establish is that I think that they had felt they had some sort of relationship with this agent right and that they were. Entitled -- war OK to expect a certain level of treatment and that is flat out lied to us don't play us. Because we've worked with you on the past we've all made out. So let's just be professionals and adults about this thing that's -- that that's the only thing we ask review. I went boards didn't do that but Teixeira I think they took a person I think they felt burned. Because they done so many good things that this guy in the past don't play just like you play everybody else we should we should be. In -- it was the right to feel that way or not I think that's where they felt so they took this one personally and now they're saying. Well it's gotta be just get a lot it was of everything Audi a mile we can't trust why are we gonna bother to deal with few. And -- watch me on NASA and apparently over the weekend great detail. Reports that. Varitek had to make that -- Hendry because the Red Sox wouldn't take boards his call which is bourses MO."

" When he's negotiating with the team and once the try to get leverage or you know will make a team think he's about -- other teams you'll hear all the time it's team's -- the -- meetings. Haven't heard from Scott Boris he's not returning our calls I don't know what's going on. I remember that the Dodgers were saying that about about Manny when they were trying to get him back that's. Boris is MO that's what he does to the team displays -- degette right hardball the Red Sox are kind of -- in the tables on him in in saying you know that's the way how does it feel the -- to Europe phone calls -- while. God bless them for that I."

" I agree because you know what so given it back to -- a little bit. That doesn't mean you're gonna lose out on bourses client list when Boris as the next guy and he wanted team. To bet on him and he's -- wants the most money you know Boris will. Portsmouth -- first born son for the best deal all right so whether he's got a past history with the Red Sox or the Red Sox are screw with them a little bit on this. Don't forget in the gulf for the best deals or you're not going to you know. Irreparably damage ability to get Scott Boras clients I don't believe that all you're doing is a little hard ball back pocket tells -- why are we going to bother with few."

" Was that is as far as the two share thing goes to the Red Sox wouldn't have floated out there in the notion of trading Mike Lowell while this other stuff would not have been floated out there if they didn't think they were gonna get him and they -- going to bring him -- And then deal with the aftermath you don't do that kind of stuff and have that stuff swirling around you unless you think it's it's pretty much our defeat to complete. He's come into the fold and you're going to be able to get this guy. And it. You can't convince me otherwise that they didn't build their entire offseason this year around bring him into the full and that was a big part of their plans go in and -- they've done a great job of you know recovering from that in and changing on the fly in bringing in the inaudible below cost. You know high return potentially guys since then but that was a huge part of their off season one other thing I've heard a lot of people on this. Station and other places say that Jason Bay is represented by Scott -- he's not. As far as an extension with and talking and dealing with Jason -- With octagon sports she's not with Scott Boras so I don't know where that first start from a part of multiple places before and it's it's not right."

" So so here's an interesting thing and it's the first thing I thought of and it it's speculation at this point but I like it like. What I did you abortionists and you want to come back we'll deal with yeah. Cut him out we get a deal with you. Bull bull bull Varitek comes back the reds acted their revenge because bourses out and Brian solo on the top national night. -- a great example I just forgot about it it's not totally -- parable but. -- ride -- Boris couple years ago before he got that extension though there is precedent of guys breaking away. Guys have been very close divorce breaking the way to get a deal done because. The Yankees came to the same conclusion would -- but we're got out. Are going to waste our time with your -- to judge those just luck at the studio what happened. -- so wouldn't that be awesome if Varitek says. How futile -- you screwed me on his arbitration -- and you cost me millions of dollars you screwed this thing up your out I'm dealing directly with the team. There are tickets is face saving deal back with the Red Sox he comes back he gets the money or by the way he saves at 3% would had to pay bores the Red Sox get a little better revenge they get their catcher. And we wait to see you know we we see what happens the next time well -- are you -- instinct part."

" Under -- another guy -- had serious differences with Boris is criticized him before as one of his clients along with -- and -- there's precedent there for people diverging from him and Jones. Fire him I think he did at one point may have gone back -- have to look -- but I know at one point there was a serious is some between the two of them and he was upset about the way he was being handled by board so. It's not the first time it would happen the second time there's there's a pattern there of people getting upset with the representation giving it it doesn't shock me you know. At a certain point he's going to pay attention of the guys are given them but the biggest. You know percentage back in Varitek not one of those guys anymore even if he. Got ten million what's the you know what's that Scott Boras when he's out -- to share and all these other gods that guy's obviously on his back burner now and he should. Dump horse as well I think that would be smart play and is part."

" Boris deserves to be fired for that arbitration absolutely that is just that is in. Awful stubborn. Pig headed decision as going to cost her -- Million dollars due credit guaranteed. 10111011. Million dollars on the table for a guy who can't hit whose old. Whose value is to really one team far greater than any other and you turn that down you deserve to be can't."

" Well I think it's accustomed more than his money at it cost them a little bit of his dignity too because now he's basically -- properly and go around begging for a job after an and it looks like no other team in baseball wants them because they don't think it's worth the first round draft pick. And he may have to take a severe you know 78 million dollar pay cut just come back to the Red Sox. That's the that's good just making you look bad and everything I'm -- that that's exactly what you wouldn't want an -- to duty."

" The Red Sox have them by the short ones like court it's because. Jason Varitek could say four point products want to be away from the Red Sox all go play for team -- for two million bucks a year ahead two million dollars I'm Mueller's. Don't want going to do it because you still gotta give the Red Sox that low first high second round pick in compensation so. It -- there is no the price is not the issue no one out there is going to give up that traffic for a guy -- with you for a year maybe two. So it was a colossal mess but what about the money was about that traffic and got Boris simply. Blew it the Red Sox are the only team. That can pay him. And they don't have to do it they want to say Jason. We got three million bucks in the budget taken -- they do is Jason has no other recourse other than going to Japan. I -- really. So for Boris not to think ahead to that the eventuality. Is -- at work bad job you deserve to be cancer that."

" Of that depth and there was a change just in the way that contracts were given out this offseason in. A real scaling back specifically in the years that are given out the players this year real market adjustments -- SP just because the economy and everything else. For him not be able to read that NC that that was going to happen before hand is inexcusable that the job that's his number one a responsibility to was playing now the question is just from a purely baseball perspective of it looks like. This meeting is the first step towards Varitek coming back is that a good thing. I think it's a good thing because I think. If they didn't bring him back under their terms and it's like a one year three million dollar deal something like that they're still going out trying to find a young catcher it'll be more than -- they're not. That's -- that is what I don't think so I think I say three to five years I'm 35 million I don't think it's going to be any more than that I really don't I don't see that's an of people have said give them two years and fourteen in -- you know an option doesn't really exist for a third year that they're not going to do any of that that we have that go anywhere near that well."

" Blunders by the you know use the speculation thought and that is. You let Varitek capped the headline this alleges that DNC if you want Varitek to save face. You sign him and you allow. Inhale more Boris we still help them out whatever you allow the Varitek side the cons say we signed for two years and eighteen. Well if you look at the first year is one year eight million that's guaranteed in the second -- a team option for ten million but I'll never picked up. But you give Varitek that one day headline help or shot. You know the first the first bit and use it gets to say two years eighteen million that saves face -- take. Want to look at the deal and it's really one year eight but that's. To me that's the only way they saved face and Red Sox might do that."

" They might but I don't think so maybe if if Varitek decides dumped Boras and go landed on his -- and in negotiate with them in good faith and just. Have faith in the ownership that's taken care among these years in the management it's taken care among these years. But I think as long as he's involving Boris I can't see. Up a face saving gesture given to -- golf that's like he's got a hand boards I think self I think that would be the only way that something like that would happen if he continues to go with the guy that screwed the Red Sox this offseason. I think they're going to go hard line and stay with what they have right now which is. You come back for three to five million for this year or it's not -- enough and they're not going to stop and by any means with the young catching in the search for -- I think is going to be a deal done and maybe a couple days before spring training. When the teams really start -- you know -- we've got to get our team in place. And we've got to get everybody together that we want and maybe they'll come down a little bit off the price tags that some of these young catchers have out there. But there's still going to be a deal done for young catcher come back to the right well."

" I still think they need that I'm with you they still need that second guy that legit sacking guy not cash not mirror -- they need. The Saltalamacchia. Of them Montero they need to act guy whoever today. Target as act guy there was a story actually an Arizona republic that said that Miguel Montero enough that the cell line is basically being put out there by by people says it to make the Rangers lower their demands for the young catchers and I think that's what that. The Red Sox have targeted the and catchers in Texas that's who they want commitment Montero was and being used it as a means to -- whatever it takes. They they need to get that other guy and then how they how the playing time thing works out I think. Is going to be. Determined not by the Red Sox but by the players that Varitek comes back and -- 275 he plays almost beat you know and you figured out what the other guy at the younger I have to sit for another year -- But it Varitek comes back and it's -- and he's playing a third of the timing I think the platoon thing is really going to be. Relatively easy to figure out you'll see if Varitek and see the ball at his bat speed is okay. And he's -- he plays not catch the ball to mean there are some moments in the season look like he was team -- seem -- passed balls and things he struggled at the meaning -- about that W -- I am what my point is he likely had a bad -- he looked really tired at the end of the year and -- it is -- bad I agree. Off the field on the field everything that was swirling around and I think he just looked. We Aires in in world beaten by the end of the season. But he's going to prove that he's coming back from that at age 37 which. In the world of of Major League Baseball catching that doesn't happen at 37 years -- get -- to me so that that's one part of but the fascinating part of the story is the relationship with Boris and how the Red Sox are reacting to the -- thing courses -- of the -- It's an. I would like it though the smart for the Red Sox to -- this mean. They're taking it personally and it's just business in -- and and I've credited the Red Sox in the past we're just keeping a business. And dealing with Boris. Where other teams wouldn't. Yeah I like what they're doing here and that's a contradiction I'm not being consistent with that is smart of the Red Sox. To go to war with Scott Boras that's the course I just don't think it's permanent I think they're doing something this offseason it's like part kind of a tit for tat thing and then they'll they'll go on after that night I. They have too many clients that -- that are represented by Boris and Boris on the other hand can't keep this relationship go with the Red Sox is there one of sugardaddies -- one of the rich teams that. Make his clients rich and give them big deals potentially down the line and he can't continued to do business without doing business with them."
