" Fourth and final hour DNC with Greg Dickerson and Mike Felger we'll get back to the phone calls an event but. Joining us now on the eighteenth -- hotline. Is -- Grammy Rem dog -- Good morning good to talk to Jerry is also brought -- a -- get insurance Lexus of Watertown and Mohegan Sun a world at play will start off with what we. -- the last hour talking about that is Josh Beckett comport meant. This year -- Greg has mentioned I I guess I tend to agree that I just don't see that dad asked sort of attitude. From him this year on the mound that I think we all saw last year."
" Well I can't say that you know his feeling about the same they were last I mean. I think part of it some of it has been frustration you know he hasn't been. You know it -- he was last you have in what was almost a perfect season form. Where every game that he had he had great control making a pitch he wanted to do an -- at some point in some time position has been some frustration there. Alas I was more like the Beckett you know we're used to I mean he -- the pitch he wanted to made he was jamming guys -- big curveball. Good change ups. So you know who knows maybe in his last couple of months you don't want one of those breaks so like where you know we saw last year up. And that helped take into the playoffs in the you know we all goalie can do in the playoffs when he gets there so Natalie -- gone I think it's the same I think you know. This -- still growing as a as a as an individual like because of the pressure he came here he was it'll -- anybody was going to all the ball by everybody did happen. Well and had a pitcher last year and I think he's just trying to keep up on the controlled much as possible."
" Well aside from the off field thing of the compartment -- you mentioned that the Karbala and the off speed is that we're all begins and ends with Josh Beckett of those things. For stretches this year been different for him and they were --"
" Yeah -- I think also his fastball location you know has been quite as good. As it has been in the past. You know a lot of times what is that correct it's been fastball right down the middle of plus most can almost believe that they do that they got to get a grip so I think consistently you'll put below the hole stretch she hasn't had the command of all those pitches the way that. You know he did in the stretch last year which which is very usual for guys to -- It's you know it's its prodigal pro postseason what you did last year it to be almost perfect every time out so -- I think it's another issue has been a little bit Wada and offered him. As far as that goes but your stuff -- so good that even when he's not perfect that he could still wind amused at that his stuff is that good but. They're the key to him might it always has been you know being able to show that curve ball get elsewhere that show what changeup. So it gets up and also think about but the fastball and get a -- the fastball because two years ago That's Hollywood door. Look at bats Balkans and I'm pretty good. And then you know what you develop and stay with a plan last year with or break the ball and changeup. That's when he became a complete pitcher and you know that's what's going on right now that's another aspect."
" Outside of but just -- we also talked a lot about Jacoby Ellsbury besides David Ortiz he's he's he may be the most important guy in the slot would be does what he did. Last night going forward for this team the next two months."
" Happy to put a stretch together like you know last night that mean that -- to get him back atop the lineup because Francona believes that. You know that's probably the best -- they have what he's leading off and it helps you know move other guys out a little bit. But -- specialist consistency had been you know last that was a good night for the got a couple steals couple base that's. In a ticket package together to a three of those that the games who knows maybe I collateral realist -- put him back up that spot. And go what the lineup but he wants to go with but the other is a learning process for them too because. It's it's very much -- like in Boston has you know you come up you have success it is superstar right away. And you know it he's pitched pretty raw rarely used that quite a bit to learn you know swing wise. You know the the chairman of most decisions week that's an adjustment he's going to have to make as he you know grows older. And figure out what kind of -- going to be I mean I've that's that this but it times in the broadcast you know some guys get trapped between the -- want to be a home run hitter. But what -- signals you know when he's going to make that decision that he's probably not going to hit thirty home runs -- and has played better -- in what line drives ground balls when he does that more effective because of his speed. And I was -- could change a game I mean you know they've. Maybe it's been to a first base GU. Causes -- in the infield. It's that the infield at a position solely different basic abilities on base so. I I still think it's a learning process forum and you know write it -- easy last year because all the success in. You don't want to take a with a guy too much what it comes up and has success like that but I think over the long haul they will -- a little bit and try to figure out exactly what kind of player that can got a big."
" In your opinion what kind of player exactly content Lowery -- what uh oh what's his ceiling."
" Well you know particular small sample what we've seen but I I I just say the best I can say is very steady. I mean he doesn't Olympic flashy or outstanding although he did make a great play last night. But you know he doesn't have great with speed doesn't -- power. But on the other him everything he does that is is very consistent steady. And you know he's going to that shortstop position has been an area which is impressive. And you know that's a big base it's like he did last night. I think you know it besides by the judge and it is not going to be when these flashy shortstop like you've got the past like Cabrera. -- Gonzales and stuff like that he's going to be more -- you know what steady kind of guy you know wanted to catch the ball that even get to that's basically what they're looking reportedly get out a little you know on the bottom line up. That's that's a big plus and that's what he's been don't."
" Coming off another. Sub par outing. Do you look back and a guy likely buckled and say all of our expectations for him were too high coming into this year."
" I think probably so -- I think anytime that you know somebody pitches a no hitter at a young age you know you -- Libya next Bob Gibson Tom Seaver and you know -- that takes time I mean everywhere you go to any talk to people around the league they love him because of it was that the as and I think he's. Right now just fighting -- I mean it's seems to me like since he came back from AAA you know he's trying to prove that. You know era -- you know twenty game winner of the big league level that these putting additional pressure on himself. He's got some trouble with his fastball. You know controlling it but as far as -- that means that one of the best curve -- to -- to the league so. You know I think assists again it's a matter at times though the young guy. That is trying to feel his way at the Major League level and have success. And I think his confidence might be a little bit low although the other night you know even though he had a better than. He did keep the team in the game. I give a chance to win and so you know he would take something out of it it is as positive there that even though we didn't have his best stuff but he could not run a little bit. He's still left you know with a chance for the team to win so. Those the baby steps you have to take expected you know -- become a successful pitcher."
" Is there enough trust in him to be a a seventh eighth inning set up guy for the playoffs if they get there."
" I'm not sure they would do that I I -- I don't know what they would do that was then I think. I think it probably look in other directions you know for the guys in the bullpen if they got that plate. I'm not I'm not so sure right now the way he's pigeon. Although the -- plenty of time left the split has not -- but the that's a move that they would be -- right now."
" Jerry crazy play last night Jason Bay the ball rolling up against the wall -- atop the -- excuse -- between the Youkilis. Ball in New York and Jason Bay ball last night that literally roll had ten feet along that that's. I mean total mercy to plays like that before."
" Nagano but the one in New York was crazy enough but the best thing I'd never seen a ball hit up the wall and rolled as far as that big that. And a Gload -- glad the presence of mind to jump up there it and bring it back in the play evident just -- that that is that the baseball that was. There was enemy nobody got a second look at replay I didn't realize south but that Walt was out it'd be able to keep that big up it was so log but. That was crazy everybody. Out you know you -- stupid stuff but apocalypse side but I devastating like that that that that was but it meant."
" Okay all that was Jason Bay he goes four for five last night Manny out Los Angeles continues to right -- two for three last night a ten for sixteen since the trade. Gotta ask -- the obligatory Manny question almost a week later tomorrow we tomorrow. What's the difference has made on the team."
" Well we're very -- yeah. I didn't. You know you don't have let that the deal with every day you know they basically -- they played baseball so it's different I mean there's no question it's different. I think it's been a little bit of an issue of rookies. But you know like I certainly did last -- is is that what good days and will be over that. And and also for the team that -- we -- good offensive days so. It is total is a different atmosphere -- a question about that you know they cut minutes and they're just there's going to play now there's no assists. Distractions like beware for a couple of weeks prior to the trading deadline. And you know it's a different looking lineup if for example the other night you know they walked -- ballistic at the -- I mean you know committees in that by the penalties stuff like that happens so it always optimistic there's still feeling out you know what I think Francona still trying to figure out. What the best way to put this slide it together as -- you know stats -- Ellsbury at the opportunity to figure out the rest. But as they said so you know places here I don't have to be the guy you know in Pittsburgh he was the guy. Its -- so and so essentially even on -- pressure playing in the pennant race he's probably more relaxed because you know if he doesn't do it he figures somebody else to get it done in the lineup. Where it wasn't that way with in Pittsburgh so. You know it's what -- gotta be it has worked out good soap -- both teams will see what happens in the long run. You know what will make a difference for the Red Sox you know playoffs probably not a stupid they got a great chance -- because the way other teams and it'll play in. And guys -- many goes you know opening going to get everybody knows that. And the fact that he's you know he's with the Dodgers now Ortiz happy he wants live there -- life. And -- that you know those are all positive things and so. You know so far it's been good for both teams didn't and arises it's been a -- quiet around here than it has been for quite some time."
" It's about quiet David Ortiz just two for twenty since since many left on him as wrote about it in general this morning -- this thing. Ortiz get a deal -- everything from from Manny to that the guy's pitching round of the shift. I said this morning to -- I want to shut up and stuff complaining kind of set a better home for the rest of his teammates what do you say about David Ortiz dealing with all these things -- them."
" I don't I don't think he's been complaining a lot I mean any you know any time a guy's not hitting. You're frustrated and is that he has been hitting it pretty well it -- give up the DL. And it coincides obviously -- made in have been it is not inning but. He's got a hit and I think he gets it the other night that you know for the rest having to dissuade -- clicked together there's precedent. Every player that's been injured you know what when you something like that happens that frustrates you because you say here it comes again. So it's really gain confidence and that you know and that's going to be an issue for a but you know it's so what it's only natural for a guy that's been together -- with someone else has the best before combination of baseball. You know for a period of time -- I mean there's these he does he misses -- no question about that he'll admit it. And but as far as salt you know planning and I'll let I think it's been limited and the sultan I think he's just frustrated is that it is also the the big concern about his rest. So you know maybe last night's game help them do the right side were aboard two runs. And I agree everything he's going to be a guy now that's you know going to be more boisterous -- in the clubhouse. Which I guess after the game he was last night so. Will be fired if you know it it takes time to adjust to these things that -- guy comes in all guy leaves. Everything's different it changes. And it just takes a long time but not along private takes some time. I'm going to take success. To get over things like that that's what you need it is stress together you know that maybe rip or big games where he's out -- ball hit some home runs and that'll all be in the past four."
" Jerry I want to thoughts on this have been talking about this all week and most people seem to disagree with me which isn't. Unusual but on the Manny thing and -- that than the new attitude of the team and the sort of storm clouds having. Drifted away from this team since the trade deadline Mike intention is. Is that even if they had kept them. These storm clouds would have trip to wait because they usually have in the past that the main distraction wasn't Manny necessarily as bad as he was. It's the uncertainty of is -- here or is not so in the past in the recent past this -- happen -- The trade deadline comes and goes he realizes he's here the team realizes he's here they brush it off. It's is their expression many goes on to hit -- wind I think it was a chance. Of that happening here had he stayed."
" But that that's that's the way it is chants and you don't know what community that's the problem and I think that's why they've they ultimately made the deal I mean you know it would. For most players you would say okay. You know would've pushed aside again. You -- contract vehicle of all the money to possibly get so we know you're going to play. And we know you gotta keep quiet and we know that you got up put up big numbers I would bet he can't say that you know that -- been that's been proven in the past. And the problem is is do you you've got to decide is he is he going to be that guy. -- receive a guy a month from now who's gonna say enough about my knee hurts and I'm more home. You just don't know that's the problem with Vietnamese from database things change. And my understanding is that he didn't want to trade you know eventually. -- one understand Boston pizza you know make a promised that he play be it doesn't matter that also I was dead. But the fact is we've been down this road before with them and you know I'm not going to -- anyway I'd buy totally enjoyed this type via. Would be frustrating at times but not running out well of course he did but you know guys -- the -- that devastated I personally like the guy. But on the other hand you can't you know you can't take his word. That yes some going to be great the rest of the year because we've seen in the past as the track record even ought to contract yep. That something's going to put the wrong way and he plebiscite Miami Erickson might -- cigarettes and also it is on the DL fifteen day and so. You know that was I think that was probably the biggest thing that they had discussed in the front office before making this deal an okay we trust -- to be that way. Or is he going to be many of the past that I think Theo decided they couldn't trust the fact that you know he was going to be that way for the rest of the yeah."
" I know Gordon -- reported that the other day Jersey you're here in the same thing that that. Indeed Manny and and his agent said not all will will will be all right will be a they'll be a good boy -- he wants suspect."
" Yep that's exactly what I heard them you know it would push came to shove it up that many thought the Red Sox were going to trade him. And and then went all of a sudden when the trade came down. You know made -- decided. Who goes kind of a creature of habit though I don't want to go anywhere on Wednesday here in -- good boy well it was too late. You know it was too late by that point in the -- such that a player they felt that you know could help them the rest of the way that I have to deal with these other issues so. You know. If I had missed the guy -- me if I wish was still here right. These these you know isn't you never know what to expect the guy that's part of the problem. You don't know what to expect from you don't know what is going to come and play funeral he's got to you know have a bad near a bad hamstring and have -- bar -- pushed travels secretariat. -- what's going to happen with -- so. You know at some sense you know the descent to compliment around that place in the that a worry about stuff like that anymore so that's a good thing. On the other hand you know for the first you know a week he's playing like hell -- in the National League which is good -- you know together the contract."
" I had Schilling yesterday and that is. Given the way you approach the game given the way your attitude is towards a game and as a professional does -- bother you. That Manny did all the wrong things and still won still got what he wanted."
" Well yes they I mean Chara of course you know you hate to see guys not run balls out -- you guys take days off from president elect. You know facing a certain pitcher. Is that the first got to do that but of course he gets a lot of attention because Hall of Fame player and it gets to a point when you're watching him play we -- stunned when he did run a ball out. I mean it you know you could you could Columbia night after night and say maybe didn't try to break up but they'll play and most -- make an apt way to boost the second baseman shortstop. But what he did is that you know that the -- if it became such a you know they didn't want to mess with a that he wanted to -- Scorer element and say okay you're suspended the bench because about -- because. Then -- they figured you know well -- this guy totally and and that that was always an issue with them because we got away with a lot more than most people get away with. Because they were afraid they're going to lose a great player we just say Nomar last. -- Oklahoma when this -- And and you know it was it was a very difficult situation to deal with but -- that drive you crazy because of those. And then if if you'd hear about as bad David you watch him run. It is LA the first couple games is quite these bats and Ricky -- so I mean it's you know it's. It was a difficult it's it's always -- get rid of you know what superstar player there's no question about that and -- and that's what it was not easy it's not easy but I think his actions made it much easier than what it should have been."
" Ram real quick if you're Terry Francona at what point. -- you have to pull the court -- that would Jason Varitek and start pinch hitting for him start taking some offensive opportunities. Away from him I -- Terry's -- a track record is to stick with guys and more often than not it works and I agree with that. But with that particular player are you reaching a certain point where that may have to change."
" I think so because you know you have a guy like Kevin Cash wouldn't commit to play excellent defense so you don't have to worry about a backup catcher. And any got a got a bench like Sean Casey who you know can hit so. Yeah I I I I think there's certain times where the weather should be a picture of the bodies. He's also indicated there was many times is that going to abilities got to leave Mendez because -- executing you know run into a home run at this -- but. You know -- I don't know it's just been one of those real bad is offensively -- totally lost its sides of the plate. And I think in the long run that he would benefit at times if they detention forum but. So far it hasn't happened Woolsey you know we'll see what a critical time of the game comes. If Francona doesn't but he's got is that option to deal with because. You know he's got a good very very good back could catch it defense which that is not worry about that part of the game and a close game. And he's got a couple of guys to the bench destroy the bat so. -- I mean I think of the game's on the line. Especially if he continues to struggle the way he has got to do something."
" Joe -- is low risk do you think you can help the --"
" Well from what I saw early this season no I mean he was awful we -- with Cleveland just brutal in the -- and may eventually get rid of element. I never really liked him very much anyway even though we had a ton of -- to Cleveland. Last year I was you know you watch a pitch you can't -- how you do in this you know so. You know it may not be a -- it to get -- the cheap money you know maybe have a bad rabbits and that's been experienced by VOK but. I don't see him as a tremendous upgrade in the open."
" Okay around the rays aren't going away they haven't yet do you still expect them to."
" Not exactly that I go and have been let go anywhere by August 2 you know. But whatever -- date is August wherever it is that's and that that's a long time to play good baseball though that they're for real -- they had. It's going to be a pretty interesting out final month and a half that's for sure."
" Rabbi agree with you on that Jerry Remy brought -- by eighteen -- with more bars in more places switched to the wireless network with the best global coverage AT&T your world. Delivered -- thanks so much of pitch next week. It Jerry Remy writing -- for the telecast tonight on NASA and of course at the revenue reported by two by Lexus of Watertown what's more impressive than Alexis the customer satisfaction you'll receive from general manager.
