" Let's be honest he got little misty eyed as he drove up through Juan. Thought about our Monday's together and -- Actually nicer -- to brighten that -- you got little misty eyed as you thought about coming down here today didn't you. -- yeah are maybe. Maybe misty -- as putting it too far but did you leave something out of the -- members worked you know I'm not all and I like well I mean what do what am I missing here like coming here in this is our our regular Monday. Destination during football season it will be our. Friday destination during the football season is -- well was as Patriots Friday well. Be part of our programming schedule this year and it's our destination today and Thursday with training camp going while."
" Today and there's I won't be doing this during the summer but during the season. As you just said we'll have Patriots Monday as we always do have Patriots Friday. Something about getting the place at the end zone motel. -- John -- get out two nights two guys down here. Three nights in the city 1920 bucks and you don't maybe don't spend weekends down here to cut it skimming going to be here a lot of Sundays anyway so or. I could try to. And I -- is that this might be illegal. If I have boy who sent the a year ago. By the hour. Ladies welcome and please. I get a little room at the end zone on us that pay it to -- sixty and I don't know if that's probably tomorrow. Within. If people are coming in the town I'd -- mark up the room that."
" Okay I -- or could and make in makes them pay a little money out. Probably my product of that. Yes sure -- SS -- plan nobody asked to know about nobody will -- we're down here at Gillette in and if you could've seen in the last ten or fifteen minutes. It was like a Marx Brothers movie. We are actually sat up up on the of the red level they called red level out on the balcony which is our favorite place to watch training camp from Iran outside. You're looking down on the practice field system it's a great view of everything and and everything was great. -- ballot check mail us. He took it off the field early and and so all of a sudden it quarter ten. They're all leaving air out the door and so we had to scramble and we moved down here to wire our studios are Patriots Monday. And Patriots Friday studios down in the bowels of the building just down the hall from the locker room. Which is as I said nicer than our studios and right now anyway so we don't mind coming down here. And we're here because Richard Seymour is going to join us why do you think you got to -- the field. You know I don't know Adam Eaton he mixes of that surgery and he mixed it up a lot he has -- he was out that he had him out there in shorts and T shirts that."
" Yet he has I think he does it. We might think he does it to keep us off balance but I think he does it does to keep this team fresh you know they don't know what's comin' from. From day today Justin just when they get to the point where they want to. You know. Bury him at the fifty yard line. He throws -- a bone and on a nice day like this hasn't practicing shorts as opposed to that."
" What give you an example of how you know I I'm not sure that it was intended this way the the National Football League has three officials here today. And they were out there today and their shorts in their striped shirts and and the idea was to -- changes for the upcoming season. But the players were just doing walked through stuff the officials were literally sitting. In that strip between the two practice fields because there they weren't doing. Eleven on eleven stuff they weren't you know they were doing special teams stop and seven on 77 they just sat there. So they made the trip here. Now I assume they'll come back out tonight for the second section have an opportunity to go through their stuff it looked like they were able to go through everything here today."
" Yeah -- if the officials are around I don't know how long will be here. I'm sure. Bill politic we'll take advantage of this it benefits. Just asking officials questions. Which has happened before -- one of them one of the best moments and and that's been going on since he's he's been here. It's wanting to have officials after practices and to let them call the game as they would right right. And it's something else just to take. You know take advantage of that and go off the field and asked the officials. Some issues that that come -- game so. In 2001. They had Bryan Cox here. Came to the team late yeah and they had a question and answer session with the officials well -- And Brian Cox as."
" It it. Glad -- it is Eric I leaned up -- and let me think let me think. Let me think -- you know what I'll I'll go I'll go with -- okay it rhymes with this yeah so Bryan -- to the official. It isn't okay if you call a player which. In the if this is it what what would what's the contacts. And get -- Rick yeah. Action on I could cut a he can -- Not bad I can't help but up. And saw it and hit. It all the players are allowed in the officials are laughing. And then they were able to talk about what talk to him. What daunting if until the officials were able to turn into a teachable moment but -- those things off the field that endeared Bryant talks to his teammates to. Some of those little nuances that didn't quite picked up but you're just watch in the pages from before."
" I -- one of the things that Bill Belichick is concerned about EM a lot of coaches in this league has to do with. The radio communications. With the defensive -- And that's rule change this year -- and and bill has he expressed. Concerns about this he and other coaches even when the rule was was initially voted. And and many coaches in league said you know I'm we're just archer how this going to work and and we went through it at the time you know you can only have. Certain personnel groupings on the field at certain times and and we'll just use. Rodney Harrison is our example you know he's got the the radio. Receiver in his helmet but there are times when Rodney Harrison is on the field not a lot but -- times when he's not. So what do you do then. And and they're having issues they think with much it is now Belichick has said we're not even going to touch at this week will will play around with -- next week. But he he said here yesterday. Where basically committed to the fact that we're going to have to use hand signals. Until this whole thing gets sorted out and figured out and he said he's talked to a lot of other coaches in the league head coaches and coordinators. And they're all convinced that they're just going to have to use hand signals again until everything gets sorted out what."
" Wonder if things get sorted out I just don't see how it can work. In football. Is especially on defense there's not a player on defense. On every -- ought to be on the field every semi I guess it it happened a few times last year for the Patriots they. There was a game and and we can ask him at at some point this year Rodney Harrison replace the entire game. And and James and was the one guy could come up with who might be out there James Sanders had a couple games last year it was on the field for our. All but you know three of force that you must -- in another Galaxy somewhat there's no way that would -- yeah I mean it's it's very unusual for a player to on -- and be on the field the entire time and you really eliminating. Four or five guys -- and so -- right for example let's say Jason Taylor play for the Patriots. He would be one of their smarter players right. And here he he's a guy along with like a Tedy Bruschi or Richard Seymour that you would want. To have communication with the entire I mean the entire deep into one you want these guys setting things up. But you're not going to have a defensive linemen do what you're going to have a guy duel with his hand in the dirt and Jason Taylor goes back and forth sometimes -- in the -- sometimes he's standing up. You want to take advantage of his expertise but you can't afford to have a guy who's on the defensive line. Not surveying the entire defense. Calling out the signals."
" Us a got to go Bruschi who is the perfect candidate as you say he's practically coach on the field anyway how he's off the field and time's up -- down he's not out there in certain situations these and especially at this stage of his career right he's not going to be -- on every defensive snap. -- I think they've got some issues to work through I'm sure they'll be able to work through them but -- has set in and apparently other coaches have told him. They just couldn't use the old system at least for now. And and figure out you know as they be as they go along. I get the sense from him that you know if if the defense and helmet system works he's going to be pleasantly surprised he doesn't think it's going to work."
" Well it might not be able to work under the current rules. You might just have to do the only way can work in that in the offense would cry foul. And the commissioner probably wouldn't let it go through the owners when medical through because we know in this league everybody wants to see offense but the only way it could work. Is it every guy on defense. -- With the with --"
" I was wondering though that at Illinois and up well and I'll take it one step back from you. Could you have one player. From each position group you know say once -- I matter one linebacker one defensive back have one to beat now they may all three -- on the field at the same time. But chances are. One of the three will be on the field and every moment. Elaine let's use let's say at Seymour Bruschi and Harris right. I mean short of injury it's hard to imagine that one of those three guys isn't going to be on the field for every defensive snap."
" Right at least one of them right there and you could do it that way of but I I think. If it starts to. Even out. If it starts to which it -- doesn't want -- of the field is level now. You got a problem because I really believe if you had. A defensive player who was able to do what a quarterback is able to do speak with a coordinator. On the field during the game without a hand signals -- to say watch out for this watch out of that if you have that on defense scoring will go down. I think oh -- out of and that dramatic are not ten points per game across the board but I think three or four."
" Yeah and that's not what the league dad and I don't want to look at it or not what they're looking for now you're probably right -- talking to John Jerry few minutes ago and and they hit the nail on the head. Patriots training camp is exactly what Bill Belichick wants. It's exactly what the media and many of bans don't. There are no story lines at a Patriots training I mean it is amazing. And I and I give you an example this week. -- catcher comes back to him. It's activated off the pup list but we're talking about a guy who was arrested at 202 oxycontin pills on his in his possession what I got arrested. You know pled guilty to -- what whatever was the speeding charge. And Andy and the doctors to hear about -- well and at and not only in my gosh I'm still here on this team he gets activated this week and it's like. Nobody even thinks about -- addressed his return to be happy to ethnic scary you know helped our offensive line depth the all those cliches that kills power. Catcher respectfully declined to comment to the media through the public relations department as I would expect -- what. But you've got -- try it was arrested. For possession of 200 into oxycontin -- who returns to your lineup and it's like nobody."
" Well I open it this way you know you sit there are no storyline -- there are plenty of story lines here. Comment on -- maybe its -- and they -- controversy here too I think nick catcher as a perfect example that's that's an extremely controversial story. But the Patriots. Don't cooperate. And I guess we let him get away with. We in the media let him get away with it. If you're a beat writer. In -- catcher comes it is comes up the pup list. That's a story that's right -- for a couple of days but the Patriots. Kind of cut us off -- play the game don't let he who he's not available any."
" Probably won't be available all year that he will not be able to talk to the media. I I would guess the entire series. Not the -- onto a lot of talking anyway yeah I mean you really have a couple of guys -- and and light do most of the talking for that group anyway. But I'm guessing you'll never have the opportunity to talk to."
" I've said it before. This is I I I I I know this is not hyperbole. I'm confident saying this -- put some money on it and didn't come up with somebody better. You take the cash on the table this is the most difficult. Professional sports franchise to cover in America. The knowing the papers they make it harder than anybody else in sports. For a media person yeah if you are if you are starting off in journalism. And you know cover the New England Patriots. You might be like what you might be I wanna Dante Scarnecchia up but the climate is going to reply."
" I'd give it -- it one other that's very similar and it's because it it's one the exact same way the New Jersey doubles. -- morello runs his franchise exactly like Bill Belichick runs he has. You know. Don't don't talk about injuries don't ask about it he's not available Lamoriello runs his his organization the exact same way now it's nowhere near the same. You know paranoia no no no it's it's the exact same paranoia the level of interest is nowhere near the -- for the National Hockey League is the NFL. There's there's nowhere near the same media attention. But for those members of the media who to cover the team. I know because a lot of them are friends of mine yeah it's the exact."
" Same thing here and and keep this in mind that none of your fan in your listen to what you don't care how hard it is to cover the team and you right. It has nothing to do with your enjoyment when you're on. When you're you're tailgating. You know Sunday morning at ten or eleven. Or some cases eight and I hate it and I know beer at that -- probably appear afternoon LE. But when Moses and Internet and -- your way take a national most of -- make it very much. Just going to work my way up to this. You know thinking about. How hard it is to cover the Patriots an epic about a reporter -- about story lines but it's something to keep in mind when you ask yourself. Why is this. This reporter covering the Patriots like -- why why did immediate talk about Bill Belichick like this wide wide disease. Reporters seem to have. A lack of joy when they're coming -- Foxboro. Well this is I think this influences the coverage we said it many times. Because the Patriots make it up on reporters when anything goes wrong with the Patriots. They will be jumped on they would not be given the benefit of the doubt there's not much leeway because. The reporters feel like our jobs are hard and so now. We're gonna we're going to give it back tears as best we can."
" there a couple of exceptions to. And and I think of it only because I -- to walk in today with a one of the exceptions and we talked for a while Mike grace. -- the Boston Globe -- seems to be an exception to that. A he he has a Julian coming here and you'd you know women talked on mommy loves coming here he loves working easier all the time. But he also doesn't seem to suffer the same slings and arrows that many other people I you know when bill -- check finally talked. About spy gate and all that stuff -- it was a Mike grace. You know when when now. Scott pioli was talking about personnel stopped it was -- Mike grace and it's it's the one guy who seems to be. Different from all those other guys. You know Michael Felger. Both with -- lesson now and with The Herald as well doesn't express the same joy in being here doesn't like covering. My guess is John Tomas he does have a great time coming down here anymore."
" You know what it's like. Maybe it's I don't know if they they would never admit this but maybe if they kind of approach it like a fraternity. There's hell week for fraternities and it all year -- we've got to see if you can deal with that in if you can do with that. Okay then you have proven yourself -- and we'll talk to me I do know. The Patriots have a lot of respect for Mike recently worked so hard. And he really is. -- interest it. In finding out. What the real story -- he's really interested in learning how in the sound simple but a lot of people aren't interested in this he's interested in how plays work. It and what makes. What makes a football team good and he will talk about. You know offensive line play he'll talk about the difference between. Bill Belichick's 34 and Wade Phillips is 34 and he really gets into that stuff and a lot of reporters don't. Like or can't. Well I think they can. That they just don't find that interest."
" Yeah maybe you're right. You know training camp and and we've been covering the applause junkie which is why like. I mean I go far enough back to covering training camps where. You'd be at Bryant what was then Bryant College not even as Rice University university different -- when you go to Bryant College out there and Smithfield. And and you could go wherever you wanted to go. I mean reporters would literally and they'd be yelling out the way you don't try to run a play here you can walk up and on the sideline. I mean you could go where you want it you could talk to who you want it right you know Grogan would come to the sideline between. Between sets and you -- tight on you know what do you guys work on -- you could literally do that."
" Way back in the days -- have -- just are there other franchises that do it and then there are some franchises that look at the Patriots and I'm not it's -- about football teams. You know look at the Celtics this year with Doc Rivers didn't allow his assistant coaches to talk up sound familiar. You know there -- other franchises look at the Patriots are saying they've been successful."
" I think the reds got done try to do it in some respects and has a harder. You know baseball and he had Theo as the comments earlier this week when he said. There will be no no more comments from this organization. On or off the record. About Manny Ramirez. You know the message he was sending. To the people within the organization is shot up right you don't get to talk I mean Terry Francona -- to talk everyday. And and even he's very measured in what he says and doesn't say. Theo Epstein obviously can talk chooses not to I mean you you almost never hear from you hear from Epstein now as much as you hear from -- About 23 times a season maybe. And that's it. Doesn't do. Does -- do it general managers segment with -- and anymore -- do that anymore. -- do that last year. It doesn't happen much. You know -- other members of management you know participate but I mean you never hear from the anymore. And he's like he's like the man behind the curtain at odds again I'll. And now when he speaks obviously. There's a lot of authority go on here he's the guy making most of the decisions. And and it's funny because I think he's also managed. To and muscles too strong -- word but he managed to get that message across to the people above them on the food change I don't know about that dale. I don't know about that and the reason he wasn't on -- on -- remarkable John Henry keeps I mean every time somebody asked the question we're focused on a team -- about a little email -- in return and in reply. And it's like you know eight words of -- them. Now he may be worried about what people are saying off the record about them. On the food chain my guess is John Henry isn't one. The other may be other people may be Warner says something maybe Lucchino says something for the most part. You don't hear much from those guys anymore you still it's like when Bob Kraft bought this franchise. Right around the and a parking lots on a golf cart on game days remember that he disappeared. He he doesn't exist here I'm and I don't mean it out of me yeah I mean there is there as one voice there's there's one guy who can talk there's. Well too because the only -- but just chooses not to. You don't hear from the owner here from the owner about twice a year what Super Bowl week. And you know if we're lucky once during our owners series you know what we when we have the owners of all the franchises looking which we will have coming up in September yet. What you just you don't hear from. And and I think the Red Sox are trying to get to that point. It's a little hard."
" Can say it is just Everyzing Al SA tough for a baseball. You know bear the reporters there -- at 3 o'clock. Every day -- it was a clubhouse open. Four hours three and a three and a half hours there. Not that in football. On game days you don't have reporters. In your locker room and in baseball every day. About the play game and our. You look across and UC Gordon needs of the Boston Globe. A minute when it is this a completely different culture."
