And Sanchez delivers. Swing and a chopper to the right side runner trying to score in five -- going to play a collision he is going to be out of home. Ross colliding with a bailout he knocked him backwards. But -- -- with a baseball Red Sox did play contact. Implanted in a perfect role in two runs on mile line and that's on the resume. Well -- -- plays like I -- a bottle not gonna happen anymore. We're here at the baseball winter meetings and baseball has just agreed to eliminates. The home plate collision no more captures runners collided. -- Basically you can't. Barrel right to a guy and there's no more. Payments -- baseball Pete Rose rate policy not gonna happen. That Dave Ross played in the tigers' series -- Didn't take on the game immediately we were talking about it -- -- he was he actually played a couple innings. Before leaving the game and keep playing with game five came back to playing games it doubly. So. I guess what you do is when you are when you're out at home by a mile. Which either do is. Give yourself up or future. On around the time. Is that what you have to do would be. He's got to slide and as is basically got to treat understand that -- if you're at if you are I saw this month and -- going to be able to it struck the -- are actually more read. You may remember this you know goddesses. Published it was ninety. -- -- -- This is unbelievable. At a -- hopefully remembers it otherwise got to remember intimidated but -- aside. The Red Sox for planes -- Jason Varitek obviously was catching regrets. And shocked to remember Chuck Jones course where he was out. He shot -- we have Jason Varitek and like he was -- -- -- Moses gates jumped over all of and it was almost abruptly -- it was it was very athletic jumped over room and it that he tried to. It was like combining a lot of sports track and hurdles. They're trying to do a little -- up at a felt told -- The -- embody that yet on the -- can't. And he bested -- then Varitek was able to chase down I -- did you think like that can jump over the guy without touching him. But essentially it's going to be weird. To eliminate. I think it's a bomber I'm a little collision partly that. You just do Regis you know a lot to crash you know what it's gonna be repercussion but when you're not allowed to block the latest culture there's gonna be repercussions -- -- Our secure but it's -- if he can block the plate yeah in the camp collisions. Got a guy charging around third. Your catcher what it would you have to you have to stand in front of the plate and swing around or or or straddle the plate the way other other guys do what other basis until just after sliding to. Let me just let me get -- to treat it like -- and I just I can't even -- in May be as simple -- account even. I think I can't protect your I get her picture I think it'll be very simple really do I think guys just slide but it's not like Caroline decided not like -- or -- like as you can slide past I understand what it just it's going to be different and I'm sure war. It will not in the -- -- We've talked about trauma brain injuries. We used to talk about football. Very rarely discussed that baseball. Is there. It's their research that people in baseball found that. Catchers are getting concussions there reporting. Player. And we have -- capture somebody running into the captured in concert for this safety thing otherwise. I don't understand that it's an overreaction. To one high profile incidents but if you think about baseball and home plate collisions in the last I'll give you. Examples I've last week but you're right but it's episodes last thirty years how many. Examples can -- the last thirty it'll probably very dangerous it's probably very few but -- I think you're right it is a reaction to what happened with Buster Posey. I think it's more than that and I think it goes back to the thing that we mentioned twice this week already. How much are you willing to accept a short term. Short term sacrifice. For long term game. And every catcher there's some there's some teams that are essentially have already been instructing their captures not -- play. Hey we don't want you to do this it's not worth it to was let that runs score. And I think a lot captures were put in this position like I wanna be talked about -- on the capture I need it's just like in hockey right pay somebody my guys I've got to stand up and shot off -- on the -- On the one hearing pat I should be tough enough to see here. Not looking down at third base line -- that the role and they get pulled over and fire up my team where some organizations that I want you to do that anymore so what does the capture these are -- between either a tough guy normal loss either idiots horrible loss and so I. I think that ultimately to take that there are currently out of here for the game. I think about it to go for the I think they would -- the other question. Forgetting about whether to go to about how I -- I don't what what it wanted it need to be effective what what did it. -- your career where we need an expert opinion on this we need that we need somebody knows that the talk you know who can answer your questions I've purchase. ESPN is literally walking by as were having this debate in utter fallacy. Do you expect anything less merchandise journalist and how aria candidate -- hits -- hook -- -- -- -- Michael's question he was saying with this new rule good for baseball practice house. Mean the rule about. Literally guys at the plate I was not in favor of this until -- started talking to a few managers and one of my best manager. He's told me. I'm all in fairness I've told our catcher for six months now I don't want to block the plate and and it really. I thought this was an electrical part of the gain. The collisions at the plate. And I still believe there and ventricle parred. But there are better in baseball guys older than me who think this could be has captured in -- And one warning on this it is John McDonald of the Red Sox told. Let's make sure we understand. A lot of catchers are really good at keeping use the play and then taking it away the sick. And you break your ankle when they draft and he still let's nature as we protect the public that -- but we also protect the runner. I'm a little -- I'm still not a 100% sold but I must say I'm a little surprised when veteran catchers like with OT people like that they gestured to him. Now can you I'm just trying to envision it. A broader routing third full full head of steam. And and the catcher at the plate so what is the capture supposed to do now what it what do you allowed to do what you. Well you're not allowed to literally blocked the plate which so many catchers -- and they hit the runner now is gonna have to slide so if we go about it that way maybe that runner doesn't have to decide. Halfway there only in this. What are mine and I do -- and -- over -- my guess slide now the decision apparently. Has already been made. And I think what we're getting to here is. I've spoken to Mike Metheny about his concussion issues files and I'm telling you he told me when he caught at the end of his career. He had two pitches that he completely. Missed and hit him in the chest protector. He told me at the late while he's playing with a concussion he swung at a pitch that was literally already in the catcher's Mitt he had no idea where the ball was. He and when he retired couldn't play anymore he had to go home and he would go to the grocery store and called his wife routinely instead. Why am I -- -- -- mine why am I here. That's how bad it was the -- doorsteps and there it's the same stuff mayor ray CTE in football that's how bad it was formed Mike Metheny. Not to mention some other people who have had -- just terrible concussions. And sell. When I look at it that way that Mike Metheny has been run over that many times and take -- felt that it's not just he got run over at the plate took a hundred balls off his mask. That'll do it also so I'm of the mind if he was ahead at the end of his career. Then -- a football player and they're protecting them maybe maybe it's time to start to protect the -- a little more. Its interest area I like the play at the plate I like seven at just as a fan it's the same reason I like violence in football and checking in hockey I love that moment where you're actually going to see a collision at home plate. So personally I'll be sorry and Adobe story that we've lost this. The mitigating factor is a what you just said you have to have a level of compassion for the players who live this. But the other parties plays at the lateral was exciting. I mean even if it's a slide plate the plate they're still pretty damn exciting because it runs on the line and it's going to be close to what we really losing that much against the question. You know like. When ray Lankford knocked over touched all about. 25 years ago they still show that every time you watch any thing and it's the play with railings. Mountain up and thrown out his left fist. That really team to believe this is what got us going he steam roll the guy at the plate and we took off from there whether that's true or not. In baseball people actually latch on the things like that say that was the reason we have this thing go on with our guys took their guy out. If that goes away I'm not sure what all this is gonna mean but you're right. Plays later gonna be really exciting is still. And again when a veteran manager looks to me and I told my catcher don't do that anymore it's like -- -- both man and Indiana what you elbow that guy. They represent look at it's part of the game to do it every night. Well my final question for Hewitt was close with -- passionate debate where 5050. To 48 with back. Pretty much unanimous that it's time for a game it was pretty much unanimous and that's the big change over the last three years of Bruce -- here recently brought this up after buster -- it crash back there OT former catcher. Finally at Salem maybe we should try some at a much two peoples that. Don't worry Tony you know he's captured this is part of the game but over the last few years things have changed dramatically and I think everyone on board. One of our producers twenty years old. And says. Heard Hugh -- rate basketball player and he wants to play one. Mystery. Really yet and what you shot like twenty footer basketball prowess he's -- yet huge audience the end -- -- -- route is known by all I'm 57 years old five -- Florida half now is a really bad combinations that we're not gonna talk about basketball. -- -- which is -- twenty footers for at least a. It's. Let me clarify I. I have to -- obvious this false floor. Either way I get the better -- ethnic -- -- -- -- real quick overture to go figure out what's next for baseball what's the next week. The next big rule change well. It's replaced them right and it's going to be really hope this is gonna work one challenge perhaps in the first six innings if you're wrong about that you lose for the rest of the game umpires are going to be involved no instant replay on ground balls over first base and over third base because camera angles are different. No replay on it matters that they actually in him or not. No replay on the Tenet the -- play at second base again trying to keep people healthy they're they're gonna get the hell out of there before they get killed. We're not gonna punish him for it not this much early if it's gonna mean -- he's still attack that's the next thing. Great stuff Tim thank you for stopping by -- it was a fun week here -- meetings and urgent ESPN and one of the great basketball players you'll find. I'll give back to hold up or your calls talking Celtics as these Bruins calls on there as well let's tax alcohol WV.
