Pierre McGuire, NBC Sports, joins Mut and Merloni to breakdown a tough weekend for the NHL

Dec 9, 2013|

Pierre checks in with Mut and Lou after a tough weekend for officials in the NHL. The worst incident was the cheap shot by Bruins’ enforcer Shawn Thornton on Penguins’ defenseman Brook Orpik. Pierre explains how many games he thinks Thornton should be suspended for in the aftermath of Saturday’s action.

-- there's nobody better obviously issues that are buddy Peter McGuire NBC sports. And the NHL on NBC Pierre Thelma Lou are you. Burning activists are pretty much popularity you've Luke good afternoon. We have just spent the last couple minutes try to pick through what I thought was just a mess -- on Saturday night if the -- We know Jane -- gonna get a spot we are awaiting what's gonna happen with -- important. Take me back through your eyes as you watch that play in. And how we got there is this -- simple as that Brooks or pick would have dropped the gloves and at and defended his hit a Louis -- with the Bruins that does the -- -- incident. Happen -- -- does that. Let's start at the beginning to we Americans and a vulnerable position I thought the Earth's orbit should have been penalized trigger errors. If you look at Nicklaus from all of the Detroit certainly and they hit that you put out very similar that -- at the -- sore back. Put on -- Ericsson. They call it being on wall and it's a big term around the league. Their virtue professionally that actually -- -- like that in fact Pittsburgh duke reached out. But the Pittsburgh Penguins -- defect and actually don't care. They're not allowed to -- such as part of their game plan. Soul or picked -- a good read he pitches that are here since he social -- shut. We Americans and a formidable position doesn't seem common probably could think not everybody -- in China. Right there and that should have been a penalty for Brooks look back burner fares on quality right now that's number one so that helps defuse the situation. Then obviously next time he goes on. John Borden who wrote the role with the team a clearly defined role in very good attitude he's not a partner he's a good player for a very good team. Stanley Cup winning team. He goes out and challenges or at 4 o'clock in the fight property lies not -- -- -- an important not a big fighter. Number two they don't have Paul Martin who's as usual shut down and -- partner and they don't have rubbish. They're so they're bound bodies on defense in this huge gain for them on the road. So he's not gonna fight because I can I had just I mean Pittsburgh great artist and put her finger stretch and the players to a man told me that worked a -- where they're big trouble there -- -- -- shut -- capability OK that's number two number three. That changed -- You inflamed everything. In my humble opinion that was completely acceptable would change -- a bit of that martian completely unacceptable so he's paid his and it's five games. The personal. I've known Sean for a long time goal but -- plate trial parking and saint John's Newfoundland. I've watched him come up he's on his way to -- -- -- some of the Stanley Cup in 2007. A lot to be part of an appointment -- eleventh. And I happened to my house for dinner is a very good colonel mark. What he did this categorically wrong because vs source blue book. And that's the part just to go ahead and I think if you look at the third below it's almost like a war to head. It's also can and then anything and I know he does a lot of -- training. So. What you did was locked up or the wrong. I'd light the way he handled it after the game I did not like the weight gain new York and this situation after the game. There was actual remorse and shock he knew he had done wrong there's no remorse -- Listen I agree with the on all of its and we looked it. John thorny known personally years you know -- that was real regret right at the way he was talking. But it doesn't take away you know from the suspension that might be coming because they get but a lot of people they're just tell me you know that and I'm actually crazy at all pick was just taken and that -- that really helped me that's that's what you. And year out taking it did not take the following right out of Pittsburgh he's nowhere near thirteen. So he's not particular. Would you expect for John here will kind of suspension eight to ten. Oh yeah actually doubled it's probably going to be double digit numbers because I don't think leak has not the case for this remembered basin through the next shortly ambush here thank. They've been through the -- Bertuzzi on Steve Moore saying they don't wanna go down that road again. And so this is almost like the vigilante justice that they do not one of the National Hockey League. -- let's circle back. And Gary mentioned vigilante justice I want to go back to what you started this -- was a non interference call on or. How much responsibility do you put on the officials on the ice that night that they should have called that penalty and then from there. Should have done should they have done a better job policing what clearly as a viewer watching a sport sport in Connecticut was turning out to be a very. Hazardous situation on the ice Saturday. I was watching again from living room in Connecticut so I can tell you this but the referees Brad Mark McGuire. Are good officials. But any time you get into a Bruins. Pittsburgh being. Dating back in 1991. Because before then balked about their way with the Pittsburgh Penguins they dominated the penguins ever since the penguins came in and the national hockey these. So I can tell you -- at any time -- officials -- Bruins penguins can't you know there's a potential for all kinds of the nasty stuff. So they should've been policing in excluded or picked delivered that it and we are some really doesn't make a fine apart. Simple take the energy out of the balloon just a little bit and give the guy to manage her affairs. And then when he comes back it's not -- you warned both benches chick. I'm not for the mayhem if there's anymore and they are you guys are in trouble. They didn't do a very good job of Brett Myers thing in my hotel operator if this verdict talking this morning at breakfast. I haven't seen Gord -- yet but I really believe there should have been interference call I think you could destabilize a lot of what happened in their game. Yes and -- -- maybe it's because the last couple of games than last night unbeknownst hit you know and Kevin Miller here's the doors are nothing nothing's nothing's call. All the while multiple guys that will work -- Mac game soldier or veteran officials residential -- He's a very very British senior official. And Tim. I think this came -- forget who -- can I -- but I know bears lose or alligators. I was working American there was no call that beyond -- okay. You know gonna pay for that that you can race hearing is tomorrow at 10 o'clock in the morning. So he's going to be huge benefit that look at what impresses me the most everybody wants to talk about the main and the -- what impresses me the most about the Bruins. There will to win the -- Pour one another and how can I can continue to -- step up and played very well I was blown away by how they handled that game last night. And the fact -- it would just. Whole variety and that. For Ronald -- it's because so much about thirteen who they came from behind on Saturday night and look at it one last great success so much about the coach. There's a lot about the -- as it cut about the leadership. The EDO and it last night a -- but really it was more of the the boy joke here where they started to below discussion about a possible warning track have you heard anything about. Maybe yellow spot three feet so these guys' heads -- down they know what they are lift their head up. I haven't heard anything about it I'm a great thing that's players' safety related I have to -- Loose so I mean. Quite frankly what I look at it. I'm more on the team of Brian Burke went a player's -- -- -- you rather than hitting and you're allowed to wrap them up and riding into the boards we used to be. But Brian Burke their heart rule would go a long way from number one player so these potentially terrible -- and back and shoulder injuries and concussion problems. And number two it would just it would take away from the suspensions. You thought you could just going to bear market divers back Sheehan right and into the wall right now guys are just exploding. And happy that I was coaching on the target aspect of this do you look for messages from the coaches. I -- the thinking that the coaches think they finish your check don't let the guy off easy put him in our actual coaches say go to the blood work. And and so. I think if you got a Brian Burke their heart rule I think to Yale Law School hallway towards saving a lot of these guys. AP or go back to -- for a sec he's expected double -- suspension you know how these things work in the league -- -- for -- Because he's not a repeat offender because he's seen as one of the good guys when it comes as well that will that help his case that reduced what would've been a longer suspension Warshaw important. I think the potential is there absolutely. And I think that's a really good point. -- when you really think about it but again. I don't see Italy cabinet appetite for this vigilante justice reaching that goal of Louis with Marty McSorley and pretty sure we cycle back with the Jews in more. And -- -- with this lawsuit editing error this potential lawsuit pending from the players former personally I just think the -- got to be really vigilant on this stuff. But charges -- very respected player in this league whether you're Bruins fan or not sharp -- -- a very respected player obviously. And I think both the management level that the decision making level in the league office and also on the actual it'll be interesting -- -- out but this is. This whole thing. Just it just it's mind boggling because I know all the parties involved from both sides and it's just amazing to think that it actually happened. Real quick I we're gonna spent all our time -- double the Saturday game here but that a lot of Bruins fans are wondering why as guilty plea. Is not gonna face a hearing. EP. On the bone -- organ -- hearing with the -- that's slash. They did not a lot of that because if you think back to what's gone on around the league. It's almost like it's situation where you guys are jousting and -- Kelly go back and slash and him. So it's a weird that's another leader one that happened and again knowing both parties I feel terrible for Chris Kelly I really do feel terrible for -- It's hard to say what's going through the minds of the people leadoff. Are you indications point to so you can put some perspective on it. The Detroit Red Wings have not had traveled back to you know I think for six or seven games. Because of the flying elbow from pure talent at the Ottawa Senators there was nothing on the yeah I'm telling you right now that should have been a suspension. There was no suspension on that so I don't know where the line is in terms of suspensions what the players that people. It was a players' safety -- thing with conversation here appreciate you hop on a Monday able talking a little bit. All fantastic -- what you guys that your approach that I can tell you what I think much like the patriots much like road talk you guys are so proud I was blown away by the way they carry themselves over the last David that it's just amazing. To watch out and there that you should be really probably their plan really really proud. Here thanks have a good Monday Xperia. Our guy here McGwire joining us here obviously the Bruins come back you'd managed their against Pittsburgh last night Tuesday and there. On throttle hang in on their at the end and doing so -- -- -- -- -- -- mentioned this morning. On a copper it's called it nobody right now beat that -- part the played her at the big -- -- fumes. On defense -- 82 different Providence Bruins up last night they'll be more Miller getting -- last night they are. They are banged up on this one guys four defense banged up yet there of the compact olive a couple of big wins and I'm sure we'll have a lot more on this issue on board has this hearing. The that you suspended by the National Hockey League 617779. 793 Seve your text ATP -- -- is 3793. So we're going to be in Orlando tomorrow Wednesday. At baseball winter meetings what this. One -- soccer player thing about the Red Sox offseason of moral when asked coming up Jonny Gomes but that's next right here on 93 point seven WE yeah.
