-- -- -- -- WEEI and of course Bob -- and in with meets today Jim -- -- on the line with us right now joining us via the AT&T -- a serious except talking baseball the former general manager in the big leagues and Jim will start -- course. With the move not announced but reported today AJ Pierzynski is gonna sign in Boston which means Jarrod Saltalamacchia is out. Excluding the fact that the Red Sox go one complicated catching name for another. What do you make of their decision to go -- Yeah like delicate -- I mean you only have to give a one year deal you don't become a multi year deal like to do which aired in between present Ian Ross that means. That's a pretty good combination terms -- on the game I know Pierzynski had the problem -- -- during the regular season. And it was an issue but that was more of our culture religion than anything else I mean look the Rangers pitchers love the throat presents -- And the only people that don't like AJ our guys -- on his team. Because -- now we can be on the field is very very competitive and he's all about his own team but I mean it presents -- brings to the table. Similar which -- doesn't -- -- -- 827 the other is gonna get 1518 home runs only gonna get seventy RBIs from. And you know it is -- going to be catching a 37 between him and David ross'. It basically happened my opinions. The same thing they add I think AJ maybe perhaps a little bit better colony gains or maybe a lot better and gonna gain. Been -- on the other side Gerri have little more power but you know -- had a long swing as well so what. At the end of the day I think for the money and the years as a very solid bond adventure. If you talk about the reputation we've been talking about it today obviously you know if it's just the opponents -- don't like him I got -- problems that I don't really care of the opponents like him. But I do hear from former teammates of his. Don't really care for him themselves who who who don't love the way behaves in the clubhouse -- setter. How big a concern is that for a team that last year was built almost and not entirely but very much so -- around great chemistry in their own clubhouse. Yeah just I have to disagree wit that you know being. The -- to say that because I and I talked a lot of guys that know this guy from Paul Konerko. Adam -- two Adrian Beltre and not talk to a lot of people a lot of pitchers. And you know there are people that don't like people personality. Agent got a personality I mean he's seen them on television mean this is they had. This it kind of guy in the clubhouse he's not quietly -- the personality there. But he's also a competitor I mean and visit gotta love the game and loves to win. He's so high energy guy and I I really you know I just don't see it the same way that he rubbed some people the wrong way yeah. But a lot of people a big personalities do. But I got to play at the end of the day when you sit there and you look at pictures and the guys are teammates in the -- Especially those in Chicago the play them all those years. They look you're right the giants say look he's a winning player and that's what he cares about everybody knows who we years and how he approaches it now that -- you know why did teammates. Well on the what do players on the other side -- because you know Derek -- can be in the white and mean. He ill talk to -- when they come into the -- talks I mean just give peace still win but I'm I'm telling yet. I noticed reputation is. Reputation baseball's cup is once again it's hard to get rid of it. But I'm done it the more people I've talked you face to face I've ever more good things about things as far as what you like as eighteen. Talking to Jim Bolden a series sex and -- WEEI what did you make of their initial decision. To not extend a qualifying offer to Saltalamacchia. And then I wouldn't be there I mean I don't know fourteen point one million dollars and I -- just. I just wouldn't wanna pay him that behind the plate and have to do don't we get to the post season and you get to the World Series. And the manager decides he wants David Ross to catch. And I think that just speaks volumes of how they -- Saltalamacchia which is they like him. They like the power that he brought they liked how much improve behind the plate. And what is going -- but at the end of the day they didn't want him to be the guy putting down fingers to win a world championship and I think. I think I thought at that point it was over. I didn't think he would come back to Boston. At that point I thought maybe they would chase Brian McCann you know of course sign with the Yankees let's start didn't wanna go eat those kind of years those kind of dollars on the camp. Although they did have conversations. But the end of the -- -- look I I think this is a very solid sign for them it's not long term it's one year you can get similar production. And then you know again I I think when you look at the dollar's spent you can't argue with -- -- chance we get it presents demon can fight at some point this year like -- Munson and look at the -- -- mr. guys get after each other no thought Michael Barrett back in the day in a rivalry could they get after each other this year. That's funny you like about this month and things that would that. You never know right with with the Red Sox yankees you never know I mean certainly we probably have the best shot of this. Since the fifth month in combination. No doubt about that. One out what EC would Jacoby Ellsbury happening the next couple of days or weeks. I have no idea this is fascinating move him and I've tried to be in touch with. That GM and the agents that are all involved in this and I really have no idea I know a lot of teams have been aggressive. Interesting part about -- more than any other areas that I know he wants to stay in Boston. And the problem is is agent wants the -- years in the most dollars and we all know that's not coming from Boston. But the question is you know. What is he willing to take to stay there and I I think all very intrigued by this and the other interesting part. Is felt very connected to all the other outfielders because it felt very doesn't resign him Boston. Beltran would love to go to Fenway Park. But if they'll present -- he can't go where the Yankees were blood debt built from the Rangers -- -- have Beltran. And all kind of intermittent oceans to choose same things so it's going to be fascinating how these calculus all ready to go dispersed an outlet domino effect. Let him -- arrest that means that felt good but even goes all down degree commissioner Cruz who they have to -- as well so you know I don't know how it's gonna play out the other actually part is that. When -- you -- made that deal last night -- Jim Johnson Bill Clinton's safe bet ten million a lot of people fell -- that these are not gonna spend it well. You know I was told it like to go get another back. Another outfield -- so they might be a surprise team on someone. I'm not sure it's going to be that you Ellsbury level but they could be a surprise team did I understand they wanna spend some money get another corner popular dictated it -- their lineup after Jones and Davis. So your bench Harrington what do you do next what are your next move or two if your him. Private -- can do it happily done because -- -- -- it was -- very -- OK -- with Jackie Bradley junior there's other. Other options on the free agent market to get another bad if you lose him I think he continues stay out Ellsbury and try to get them done -- what makes sense to you but. You know where's Mike Napoli going at the end of the day and he was such a big contributor. I thought I'm sure you -- it too -- -- only not only in the -- but he talked about the clubhouse. Mike Napoli and Michael about some about you but -- you what those guys like David Ross and did David Ortiz and Dustin Pedroia that he got app in that world. So I I think he'd get the Napoli deal done next and you just keep working on Jacoby knowing that Scott Corsica and take his time. What do you make of John Carlos Stanton it his name is always gonna be out there he's not happen. For anybody or for the Red Sox. To just never gonna happen that's -- south. I didn't I didn't say never I just this -- seat and it's not gonna happen. And I've gotten that directly from the GM Ken Jennings directly from the president David Sampson. They are not moving the player period I've gotten it from several -- -- sped -- also called. And fast but they're not even don't even discussed now that doesn't mean if you wanna put an overwhelming offer that they capitalism do is not they won't listen they'll look at they will. But I'm telling -- they're meeting got a program got Jose Fernandez and John Carlos stand on the cover they're trying to win back respectability in in itself. Florida which is not easy to do after what happened a year ago. And he's he's not -- betrayed that idea from now. There might be it a different discussion of the different time if they can't sign a long term and they're not winning they may have to move on but it's not happening this offseason. Have been so many -- so far Jim I just feels like we're even at the winter meetings were week away even from the winter meeting starting and it feels like. We've already seen as a merry go round -- almost take a trip around already. Yeah how does that -- -- -- I mean that this has been an up and blast some -- never remember this activity. And actually added debate with someone about the actual movement looked it up and we got more movies now that we -- the last five years already performed well he's now part of the reason is. Bit you know everything got -- Moved up the candidates been moved up the decision. For qualifying shoppers who moved up and it took a little while for the clubs and the agents to figure that part out Thanksgiving was moved back this year it's later. -- normally is that plays into it. And the other thing it's fascinating and that's. Is that they -- so much activity ahead of us like it now it seems like we've got a lot of -- and age you realize that most of the free agents haven't signed. Fourteen of the top six state region in this marketplace don't have jobs right now fourteen at the top sixty. So I mean we're sitting here in a situation where okay this this has been a lot of fun. We love it but guess what -- about Robinson can no bells buried. -- which you Matt Garza Carlos Beltran first graders and Ervin Santana Mike Napoli made it what day of the tigers brought order they had about. A problem and it's Stephen Drew -- ball for. Brian -- almost under the Dodgers but Joaquin Benoit that a -- You know all it Bartow Cologne Fernando Rodney gets all the guys that they get sent an eyebrow so all the activity -- happening -- appetizer. This is the appetite it -- it. Well may -- few more trades as well Jim we'll see you down their thanks so much we appreciate you soon. I try to get back.
