Our number two Chris aligning with sports Sunday Sports Radio WEEI 6177797937. Then not all Red Sox some pretty much all Jon Lester threw the first hour lie detectors weighing in on the AT&T tax line on that will get to that just a moment. Out final round of the masters is going on a maturity people. Into getting into what is much science tiger. And without Phil as well he Mickelson showed up I think late Thursday night she flew in and Friday after energy is flied out. With Phil Mickelson. I he had a tough weekend are tough early going Richardson first round in a local guy Keegan Bradley struggled missed But there are some big games of the top the leaderboard some exciting. I young names of the Jordan's BT's twenty years old he's cash to win the masters I he'd be the youngest winner since 1979. LEB younger. Then the tiger was the first time you want it. And one of the things that really stood out to me is speaking with some people were down there this week to cover the toward talks and these young guys and it get back to tiger. The complete and water. Lack of off. Around around Tiger Woods to these guys are too young you think about twenty years old 21 years old with somebody like camera some would like walker. In somebody like Blix the Swedish guys and second right now and he's. He's like 28. You know some of these guys too young to really remember or at least have played with tiger against tiger. When he was hitting level like we never seen before the PGA tour earlier received since Jack. And they look at him now a Zagat shoot 77 on the weekends. Is that cats really contention anymore where is I mean Aaron I'm not old and your and all of you remember when. Final round tigers in the lead it was done forget about it I mean one year in the PGA YE Yang those big shots out late and ended up beating and yet that epic battle with Bob May. I nearly beat him in the PGA but it would for the most part just wasn't close he would get a lead and he was one of the best closers in the we'd seen in the sport. But it's just it's different now that's a different vibe. Around Tiger Woods and it's gone from seemingly a foregone conclusion that he would get to nineteen majors is seemingly foregone conclusion that he won't eat next year. Does play majors this year. Is give forty years old Jack won three. After he needs five Jack won three after forty to two of those were when he was forty and the masters in 986. Was kind of an out Larry's 46 years old. Tiger would be a hall of fame career from here on out five major championship all career to get in nineteen. I think it's interesting not only his fall from grace just as a player. In terms of winning majors the was in my opinion at least the best player on were last year he had five or six wins a torch to win major. But the bigger thing to me is just how some of these younger players perceive him do tiger as a contention it used to be regarded. The average stroke. The average round rather up a stroke in. In in the in the final round on Sundays when tiger was in contention real just kind of melted aged just. Folded around with a few exceptions mentioned Bob revealed in Nickels and it's good battles but. For the most part it was just tiger's world everybody else's playing for second they were on him Ernie Els just not Now is young guys just young enough to cocky enough and don't really remember that at least they didn't play through it. And they're saying how statute 75 on the weekends with what's not ID in the turn now but. I should be upon Sunday Bubba Watson very very likable guy. And I Jordan who were finding out a lot about trying to become the youngest masters winner a long time quick birds update we'll get back to the calls against 617779. 7937. Cordially NC DM IA's doing great to get the good news on him that was definitely a concern that you know DM IAA was. Out I got hit looked like in the that it from I thought it was illegal but not dirty if that makes sense I don't think there was intent to injure there. It was just one of those times you're trying to make a hockey play get the principal point contact up higher and you won it. So I thought it was an illegal hit not a dirty hit but by a help not the that you concussion translated to on the ice Thursday that part we don't know just yet. But Patrice Bergeron it sound like is fine I he missed the third period yesterday that would would have been a huge concern. I outside to go. There's not too many guys you point to and say this more important to the bees and Bergeron two way player in hockey this year. Obvious he's good according to coach Julianne and Chris Kelly looks like still day to day with that back injury so some. Relatively speaking. Minor bumps and Bruce is going into the Stanley Cup Playoffs but you know these guys especially Alec Bergeron if he could be on the ice on Thursday against the red he's going to be there. I HTT tech slide is 37937. It's like grab a few of these real quick a one Dexter says eight times over David Price let Lester walked. While you make Casey price a better pitcher at this stage of his career early younger I can cost more money. And now your bidding against everybody else you've got the cost control guy. Housing cost control we get the guided the under your control rather. The of the exclusive negotiating window with wants to stay here to guide it. As more in depth track record in the post season to sign him. And that point it's not a knock on price and gives great pitcher. But if you're looking at what you can do it even easier than that that will save you some money relative to what price can get on the open market signed last. I know detector can you imagine having Stanton in Boston did it forty plus homers easy architecture from western mass. Two words about prospects Daniel yep they can go hard the other way. I another one here says agree with you order percent top of the rotation guys talk about Lester innings a year post seasons died. Given the cash over five years five for one and should get it done. And out finally is Lester stats are comparable to average career he walked away from 244 million Lester has been better than Homer Bailey and look at the contract. That he just signed a few textures telling me the gets four clocked at. Well evening parade for a UConn for the championships I assume the men and women together out both of them winning the national title. Yes as tougher as Turkey's but happy for Kevin Ollie who now is the next. Hot coaching named to go from college to the end beauty after eight seasons. But undefeated in the NCAA tournament ally guys can say that are at six or 77797937. is in New Jersey he's up next When then. Just try to not cute bit Ali thank you and I can't believe that a low ball. Jon Lester like they don't agree that you like a side impact by one and whatever argument sake. We have been out of my. But you see a lot of contracts for your team that have gone got into the contract stratosphere and some of them have really worked out so well. But for a number like dapper Lester what he's so willing to stay. I agree I was surprised. When I saw what the number was at the end of spring training where the Red Sox know Lester broke off toxin seems like a a low ball contract terms of dollars in a low ball contract thirty years. definitely. god I G I mean lucky probably let out a little bit like that way radio reluctant I had. Yeah I mean yeah I'm with you thanks to the fall being a former yankees fans perspective. They're never shy about spending dollars. That Lester contract is makes sense and I've said this a few times. Because just getting back to this point I do think my gut still tells me they get a Don. Gut feeling they still get this contract done because I hate candidate it player just wants too much just wants to be a Boston too much. You back going to be here at the expense of taking deal it's foolish and a four year seventy to eighty million dollar contract before which. At ball way below market terms years below market terms the average annual There's no upside here it sounded like a Red Sox blown away with a give you four years but here's point six million a year. Which is probably more than you gonna get I guarantee each and every year on the open market that it could at least. I still think Lester would walk away from crystal he'd say no. But I could look at that is saying the Red Sox in good faith effort to try to. Do with last year what they've done with other guys which is over pay an average annual dollars but try to take that discounted terms of the number years seventy. I can't say that. I can't see it as they came under years came under dollars 6177797937. Bill isn't busted up next they've built. They would subject. who visual. You know what about. You guys keep in the world. Could together okay. guys they look at the guys renewed deal if everybody involved. Make him have the option to. Who boarded deals rivals ordered to the guys will. Make it work. So real simple. So three years of his make sure Israelis and three years seventy million. And then assuming he stays healthy another two years at how much. Ordered me at all. That would come out to volley at 5110. About then you know what would actions. YouTube. 120. It was cute guys so. Yeah It it it any guaranteed dollars sport. That that's just not gonna work for the players work for last. Well hope what works right now what made two big guy a two year deal seven million. With a guarantee. Appeared to remain nimble. The two more years of targeted what are enviable. Well let's get. That that that the five year 120 million dollar contract. Where. OK I guess that that's reasonable but I mean you if you're guaranteeing the money that it's not three years in the two years to five years. And yet we could what three years didn't work out three years it will be created numerous believe that you develop very animated. You know. Yeah I mean I like well. I guess I can't get what you in there you know again trial period so to speak at three year seventy million dollar. You know test blown the CP states LP and see if he still producing. The news saying guaranteed fifty million after that which is five for once money. Why would John again you'd think about it okay hometown discount know we heard the operator gets excited about it. to get past the idea of a hometown discount meeting complete insanity. Seventy million dollars even over a three years average dollars a lot of money. But it still. 50% of what can get out in the open market. You know why would I take seventy million guaranteed even for three years when I could just double that six years guaranteed at 140 million. You know six I can get that extra seventy million dollars over three more seasons just to go out in the open market. That would be a great team friendly kind of idea but Lester were being eyed Joseph and Wakefield once the way HL. What they've done so much for the in the you know 78 years. That burning up I don't know are already up at. I agree with UN and the injury concern for me is that they're now we are talking about Clay Buchholz we'd be having added I merely different conversation. But with Lester even a year it was bad in 2012. Still pitch to plus innings. Yeah I mean you don't get a picture wondering about that party and you don't hate you guys brought there get a going to be offered. And I are I think I really like the attitude that you just want the behavior I don't understand why the Internet situation black. We're not talking about giving the guy a 140. I'm not all that with the amount of money more book like the object audit. Well he had I think the Red Sox kind of Hewitt in the regard as well that's why I wasn't completely floored when he said OK if we here opera was the most that they had. I'll put out there by the time they broke off negotiations. But I'd be and neighbor of 400. Yell now and a and a big. Average annual value a Ford seventy for is an opera that you know the players get a that's an opera that it's designed to be turned out. Yeah independent though they looked like but based on the yacht I don't know it. All the the PR stunt getting negative PR because I think I had tickets ridiculous they have any Lester did lie to me if he blocks away at the end of the day. And and the Red Sox look back and in the end flick back and say. And they could of they could negotiate they could out of spring training but the only opera percent beat the teams the only one's gonna look bad that's an. Aerial my opinion darker integrated you know integrated I'm sorry you know it made it. It's the same age and it did Dustin Pedroia has I can't think of his name off my head to similar Pedroia as we negotiated down discounts the This situation it is thought here we cannot I mean update completely done park are now completely. It sounds like till the end of the season got to do have an exclusive negotiating window. Went thanks for the college and they've exclusive negotiating window with Lester. After the season is over and that it's free agency. But you know in my mind even if the Red Sox were come back with a big number in the fall. But it even gets to. Reagents even gets to the point were other teams are our ticketing contracts are offers a Lester you're probably spending more than what you have spent. It just get the deal done now. You just avoid any possibility any any chance did you rate in the another team another suitor and unlike David Ortiz we can't you know we had a debate about Ortiz is going to be even a market that is. And I thought maybe lot of people but absolutely now. That's fine with Lester there's no debate right. I mean when I can debate the fact that it thirty year old going on 31 year old lefty it's starting pitcher with a great post season track records that market. We know that that's the case there's going to be money thrown at this. So you have the opportunity. To not only negotiate exclusively with him up or you even touch or even Free agency. It to get an offer on the table to sign this guy if they're not able losing the player beat. I signing into a deal that maybe goes outside their comfort zone because now they worry about free agency not to worry about other offers them. You could have made a better fate in my mind decide than these reported figures in at these numbers are right you know he's not taking. It's an it's designed to be refused to keep brought out their deceit it's a hit proper. I don't think organ necessarily buy that I think that this mark baseball banner that. That they and as long as you're in line with keeping Lester some cables don't want that at any high price and that's fine that's your opinion I disagree by. It any band that wants Jon Lester back is valued at his team. It and understand just what the market is looking for the seventy's at It's an insult. Text messages committed 37937. AT&T like. Texas is Red Sox have too many pitches in the system they had the upper hand. Now that it's does its thing is too many pitchers in this is have a lot of starting pitching depth they have a lot of potential. As allowed by hope and is better than Jon Lester obese Kerr shot why not. But you know what you have in Jon Lester. You don't know what you have yet Henry and that goes to my point of if you're gonna have some of these cost control pre arbitration arbitration guys up. Lester got the money to do. He could have a a lot of money coming off the books over the next read of where years. Yet a pitcher John Lackey threw for 500000 dollars on next season. In NA and it not a salary cap sport but it sport I care about a 189 million dollar luxury tax threshold for the at least they're from last. I that to take three years the market's already at five to six. years as Lester won't get 140 on the open market I disagree I think he will. I the Texas is give Lester one of these two deals. Or for a hundred or seven and 12611. if the offer candidate for for a hundred then I would say you know the Sox made an effort. They made shots try to sign him and take battled down discounted terms of the year when it for par seventy it. and a few text is going back to a couple calls as a wide world Lester take three year deal and a trial period. We can get five years guaranteed and I completely agree this is an interesting text here get this one before the break. I you know I'm not entirely sure why everyone has the phrase 110 for five I should get it done because he had no idea. What will get it done in theory. Yet that would be a hometown discount. 111 for five years an option six and eight I have no way of knowing. Whether that would get it done so he's looking at 5110. I just keep coming back that number because I look at. What the market would probably and keep going back to guys like Cole Hamels you know reasonable comparable to last year's regular season numbers I see six. In 144. EC 23 and change per year so take roughly that average annual value. 43 in his case it's going to take a year back it five years old hometown discount. But he's not leaving and and the billions of dollars That's why I come back to that number I'll get it done I have no idea what I'd be willing to go to say. 150 over 520 million a year probably. Start pushing diablo or we'll talk. You see what the number but a number I have in mind. And a lot of people have in mind they think 22 million a year twenty to 22 million a year years and college day. Five years a 10210 million dollars 6177797937. The point though I had no idea we don't know. What gets I can tell you this though. Ward seven he doesn't get it on told you that before knowing. That that was the for the Jon Lester turned out we get back to your calls coming up next we'll talk war. A Red Sox get to the Bruins as well and what touch and the Celtics before the end of the show as well get to 4 o'clock Chris Blondie with Sports Radio. WE yeah.

  3. Chris Villani on the Lester Contract Situation

    Sun, 13 Apr 2014

Villani doesn't understand the Red Sox' approach to the negotiations with Jon Lester for an extension. Sure, you have to start somewhere, but their offer was so off base, it was almost insulting. He wonders if the Red Sox truly want Lester in the future and if they don't, WHY!?!

Back back and a guy now. Now are 24/7. Coverage continues with no Red Sox road to redemption pregame show presented by Andersen windows. Are my -- rob Bradford where you overloaded will be along here as well we're Fenway Park in our center field studios right on lands down street. Gonna stop by and say hi we will be here enough always look forward to it. Big game tonight obviously games six and I mean there's no doubt want to get to this point all playoff games are big with the Red Sox. -- their first opportunity to clinch a spot in the World Series defeat Saint Louis they get there -- with a huge when my -- my first time since 1918. They've had a home 32 game. That's what the report notes. That it's like to note never okay so must be true parent. And the first time since nineteen different different teams six up 32 will be played at home just try to make a point. It's as you said it was a game if there's a big can it -- and almost never happens this way -- don't know exactly now obviously it's being given that goes without saying. I think it's even bigger than your general games six for the Red Sox and the game you know obviously for Detroit. Backs against the wall. Do or die they know all the cliches. It's pretty damn close to be in the same thing Justin Verlander waiting game seven. -- what you want any part -- seen him a second time in this series beat one's got the home run from Napoli were able to get though otherworldly performance from John Lackey but I've said it right from the beginning -- in this series in six or lose that seven -- I don't see how they win. -- would also lose date the big top. Our failure to do three more hours of -- stock now not hours were also on the look at records -- thought it was good show. At this. I like the act accrual. Without -- freezing cold on a river there was nothing about a somewhat by the way jumped other card at 255. Amid jump back and right now they're thinking that WEI is the head of the Charles place to be okay but that side. Didn't we win said this the other day which wise this game means more to watch that it means to the Red Sox. Meeting game five. For what you just -- I agree. That they could not lose the last interview -- scherzer and verbally and you're gonna have to be both of them. Absolutely and you have so little room for error few of the Red Sox are still think that's the case now. If you asked me which is the more beatable pitcher. Sure there are Verlander for some inexplicable reason I think it serves. I think you're -- I do I do not that shows how good he won what twenty some games this year he was very good the first time they faced each other but. He's I know it's not right -- he's Max Scherzer but he's not sure the other guy -- you're not you're not here with our land united with him what. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- And it's unfair to just go on his name being Max Scherzer instead of what you can also on the fact that he's gonna win the Cy Young our right -- -- win the side. Good players good pitcher he dominated the last time they play they were able to beat him. The time before that but the other guy is Justin Verlander the other guy is. For my money still one of the three best pitchers in baseball over time and may -- may be -- had a great season. But I don't want any part any part at all you know who is also -- of the best -- make the real who's been the best of baseball for the last month and company and Verlander. Absolutely been Verlander can you -- the Red Sox hitters and they'll tell you that. Winter didn't you have his good stuff the other night. It was what we are. -- -- -- And that should scare you. Actors as he used just the deep big game pitcher and he got you do not wanna go against. I mean other than Clayton Kershaw this thing just came in Clayton Kershaw are really those two guys you know on a face any part of them. And Kershaw just get shelled last night complete shock in the day everybody. So the winner of this series will play Saint Louis a couple of bit more. About the cardinals and some of the random guys they have on their team that nobody even knows -- -- Michael walker going into the playoffs. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- To casual baseball fans Joseph Kelly and in the group that they have throwing for them even even the leader of their pitching staff. Adam Wainwright nineteen game winner some of the best stats and baseball never ever ever considered one of the best in baseball when you think of the book the elite group -- put Adam Wainwright and. I'm very hesitant to talk about the current going to be like I know we got to fill time well I -- -- I don't wanna spend all day on the might just I was very hesitant start about the -- is because no matter what happens you're still gonna have at least. Two and a half days to with recorders -- to talk about them and this could be a lot to talk about for all the reasons you just said. That nobody knows half the team -- public or else if you if you're from around absolutely but I do want -- get to this real quick which is the Red Sox lineup which just came out. That we knew who were who was going to be. But we did not know the exact source I will give it to you right now Jacoby -- very Shane Victorino who will not. Be hitting from the left side he said he could get Babe Ruth and I point out to the Babe Ruth of lefty so it probably would do that anyway. He will not be hitting from the last night the rest of the series -- it was just a one shot deal. He he he liked how he had gone against Anibal Sanchez before when he was with the Miami. He what he had been working on it but once he started doing so this is isn't gonna work out. So -- Victor Reno Pedroia they would that he probably curse that everybody in the stands in Detroit instead taking on a much frustration didn't exactly exactly. -- a good start over a third over -- the truck that. Or start over five times both very Victorino Pedroia Ortiz Napoli. Saltalamacchia. Jonny Gomes and laughed Stevens -- Who'll talk about a resort -- -- through I'm sure we're also talked about clay -- suspect and the nothing -- surprise me was the first thing that strikes you. Is -- Saltalamacchia is moved up a little bit but that makes perfect sense considering he's a lefty. While the other -- things a little bit funny to begin with right I mean it they've won the games or he's played they've lost the games where he hasn't. I don't know that he's been the reason behind any of those wins or losses Daniel nodded at the same way it. It it seems odd because novel I had such great numbers all -- the top five in the lead on base percentage I mean he was. They are guy in a right and a lineup against left handers -- Jonny Gomes. Is a platoon guy and and that's what he's supposed to be who struck out three times against you're right about exactly like he had great at bat. So so this is John Farrell just saying and look at the -- thing in a moment but this is -- just saying screw -- we win when he's in there we lose when he's not because there's no other earthly reason he's not like a good hitter against against -- I know we had a -- to against them back when they played in July but it -- not a good hitter. Against scherzer he's not a good hitter against right he's nominee is not actually has -- a lot of pitches and hit the ball decently well in the games he's been in that. And yet the decision is to stay with -- ago. It is baffling in the sense that you just don't see a lot of times where you'd just say. This guy you have a better feeling about when he's in the -- who am -- saying -- gonna come out and say that but they feel like there's going to be one or two instances within a game. -- Jonny Gomes does something to help you win. And yet you can point to the fact every time he started this post season the Red Sox have won. Well it's adding up now and that's the way that they feel -- -- a -- -- -- did not -- that what the tigers without a no hitter from wasn't for Dana now. If a good player. Right now it is feel good when Johnny go to the bank. We're back to the work field because it's not about nine dollars and weird. It well this isn't I mean I don't think of John Ferrell has been a touch and feel manager I don't think -- has been a gut instinct guy he's somebody who understands all of the reams of information that is given to him he takes a lot of care and how we fills -- the lineup every -- not just thrown against the wall to see what sticks. And yet he he sits airplay is Johnny -- not necessarily have a problem when it. It's hard to overlook the evidence up when he's been in there they want when he hasn't been in there they've lost. He does bring some other things to the table great base running the defense has been good through a guy at a home plate even though -- never should have been running to begin with. I mean there's a lot of thought you have to make -- right there's a lot of positives that that Gomes brings to the table. And so I could see why he would be in there and yet drop down. There's something about Saltalamacchia hitting six that doesn't exactly I don't know whose confidence the way he's gone so far in the series but. You know what everybody's kind of come badly in the series I -- who who who would you rather have in their batting after Napoli that you would feel so much better about all the arts. Well I think it what you need in their eyes that they need as many lefties up top as possible because. 165165. That's what -- are hitting against scherzer. And so. You you move up Saltalamacchia now. That doesn't mean you move up drew pass domes because drew has to struggle so much he's in the lineup we know why he's in the lineup we heard yesterday. And but still that's not gonna get him past the -- spot. Why is in the lineup I mean let's dig into this and -- note that we -- that I know we did but 617779. 7937. Mike -- and rob Bradford with you guys and to allow the pregame show starts three hours from now -- -- will join us at 6 o'clock once he finishes his TV duties console bring -- -- to this conversation about two hours but. Stephen Drew is in the lineup. John Ferrell says yesterday it's for defense he -- of me knows he's a good player he trusts them up the middle we see the nice play that he made turning a double play -- about the row from Jon Lester -- -- to make that play. I don't know maybe does maybe doesn't but the move here is for defense now who has pointed out yesterday by a caller. That if defense is what is so important to him up the middle. Then why was drew playing at the time of over Jose Iglesias why wasn't a -- he's given the of their free reign at shortstop if defense was the ultimate import. -- that because it was through a bad defender. Glad theoretically season which is a better defender but in the middle there that is Bogart's about the -- Nobody's also a righty hitter and he's a worst offenders and group but that's my point is that is that the other that Iglesias is a better fielder tour group I think and I don't even know what you just that is true. You're telling us it's true and and and we've been -- the line that it's true Bogart to the -- -- drew Brent I don't know the natural. Well I think they have seen him in the minor league we we've seen him we've seen him if you gain ice I'd have to see him make a mistake -- -- -- one other thing that impresses me are we got duly noted. If you said for the right yes well look at things that we. Impressed me the most about -- is how he handles himself defensively he's got no position in third base and he had been to you very -- these very confident good for him. Now. It's a good point you bring up about ugly sister group that's the regular season that's over the course of a long haul dirt and -- they thought they drew with command and sure enough he did hit. The difference here is that -- in the playoffs they feel like B Needham and the case in point. Well why do you feel this way the other day the Lester throw. Blessed with a that would put big plate and I can't prove that Bogart would have made the play -- the point guard yes but -- guests if it Bogut doesn't make out. Don't look out for there I'm just sort of being argumentative because I happen to agree with the way he's done this. I would also leave drew and at shortstop and I would have put over -- at third base as well I have no problems to what John -- stunned but. It does bring me back to something that certain you're treated me throughout this whole season especially well I thought they waited too long to bring Bogart's up. I don't know what took so long once they finally did get a -- I thought that there were more opportunities to put him in two games to see what it looks like any late game situation. Pinch hitting to see what he looks like playing shortstop to see whether or not that defense plays because to sit there they all drew was a better defender are just no way. Well let's think let's see what happens when the -- play three or four games in a row which shortstop that when I've seen him play he's looked good in the field yet. A big dispute real Mike the fact is is debate it's not like they haven't seen soaked in a -- -- they've seen him play more than anybody. They also has we've seen Stephen -- -- because he's right in front of our fight scene played the Major League level let's not he does I don't I don't think I do think they missed opportunities to play him well rated as well I think they get caught a little bit which was will middle Brooks and Stephen -- were playing just well enough -- -- and especially with middle Brooks -- -- -- starting to find his rhythm. Is trying to find his you know. I feel at the plate yeah. Just well enough. So you want to get will middle Brooke's going into the playoffs. That's why you don't play bogus because you feel Miller Brooks is gonna do something and even the playoffs he'd done some things here and there. But that's why didn't play -- and I agree you get to this point now. Didn't -- it in not. Play easier to -- -- if that talented guy who has shown that the big states doesn't affect -- 61777979837. Hear from you guys this afternoon driving around if you're at the head of the Charles regatta. Go right down the Charles Ferguson's Cambridge well you know what we're pretty quick -- I now know this must mean you say yeah I'm very familiar with the head of the child because I went to BB NN -- that doesn't mean that you're breaking down these past Hillary I don't know how to do any of them are right now. I know how the head of the Charles where I don't know how I was doing one year private school can. I know by the head of the Charles marks and it has nothing nobody is paying attention to anybody route right. So what what was what was -- see you there well the head of the Charles that's going over the -- and -- you get like a hot apple cider and Petrova probably haven't seen -- -- but I think with Italian tired -- -- hot apple decided to -- code for -- it's literally are -- plus most years it's so crappy out this weekend. That you go out for maybe a minute or -- you realize that -- freezing in miserable interrogate your car and go home focus this year it actually happens to be beautiful out this you basically created a terrible terrible cliche of a -- -- me what can I -- a lot of -- -- -- -- -- human -- -- -- the -- a forty you to plot it -- at brown paper bag or something off I mean maybe in my youth may god. You have to audioblog of course now -- moment we afford it -- over the little. There's a little spot under the -- street bridge that we may be used to go across the street -- going to be you know. -- feel that David at the trials. Isn't -- with forties and -- probably prevent and depends a lot of different people out there at 6177797937. Gravel oh we and and go hang out by the Charles River adjacent in the car hi Jason. How we go guys we just. I brought into you anticipate that Mike Napoli Italy back next year -- -- Brooks Michael to first base a little political play and they wouldn't thank you all get involved. While they both lapin personalized I do think that they're gonna offer right now if you're asking me I think they're gonna offer Napoli qualifying offer but. It's a tough one it's tough when most people think he's still gonna get a two or three year deal beside beat beasts but despite his hip ailment. But they're gonna offer the call by an opera I think that they will offer may be a two year deal. I don't know if that's enough to get it done because of the hardest thing to find in baseball we set a time and time again is a guy who can hit with power and especially guy who works the count like he does. But he went into his sexual rights this year. Which if physical stuff aside such rights. But what you what do given the rest of the deal you originally offered him I don't think that's the that would not what you would hope to do to OK we originally offered you what 339 right and ultimately had to drop it to what turned out to be one and thirteen or so why not give -- -- -- would again be front and I would have -- that and here's a reason why. You'll have anyone coming up right says while this guy you don't block this guy. And he's shown enough the effect you know despite the holes and -- swing despite the right to -- goes into. He's a guy that you wanted to team now they don't commit to a long term you're not looking for 45 year deal will be 32 with the -- the this month of October 31. So you don't looking for Napoli long term as your first baseman but. For two more years while you go out and look for the guy that ultimately can be in that spot. I think that makes sense well. Brought you and I both know the goal here long term house to be what are you gonna do to replace David Ortiz maybe this year maybe it's picture maybe it's in three years. But eventually you need some they don't just mean at DH I mean that number three and four spot in the order who is going to be your power bat. Who hits for average and power in works counts one of those truly elite hitters like David Ortiz like the tigers have with Miguel Cabrera. Like like all the teams left half. Right like Saint Louis has of their combination of Beltran and and -- holiday like cat like the Dodgers have in the middle of their order if you don't have a guy like that's your problem. Lee nice play by the way and most of those guys most of those guys -- mentioned aren't even doing what David Ortiz right exactly -- David Ortiz is doing some thing. That is it's so hard to find basal -- and popular find that -- to replace them. But this go back to an applicant now now -- in the guy's gonna replace a meter. He's part of the peace what are you gonna do with through qualifying offer it would offer one to him do you wanna bring him back at ball what do you do -- middle Brooks what do you do with Bogart's. It's a fascinating conversation about it -- -- a little bit more Zander Bogart's throughout the year -- and what may be be easier to make that choice maybe I know little bit more about whether or not he was ready to take over the reins. At shortstop probably not what I would probably do though is I would bring back -- for one more year and and say. Maybe you're going to be the shortstop a whole year maybe not it's going to be a three way competition between you and middle Brooks and Bogart's for two spots and whoever is hitting. That's is what you -- well you better be willing to trade you better beef have a pretty good field hours trade market because okay he doesn't get beat up you are -- got fourteen million dollars. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- American spirit -- think about it here you know obviously I do. -- -- finish of every you know second I. Or reflections on Arnold wants I don't warfare and so. Because there's this year -- that could be my last I don't want figure for granted. So I think that went through my head more than. You know hey I need to play well I get a contract is. So I feel like that's gonna happen you know regardless. I was Jarrod Saltalamacchia. Joining me Michael hall yesterday mikes off here along with rob Bradford special Saturday addition get ready for game six tonight in. -- back in the line and they will play more than -- -- -- you know it was he was so animated and so into it that that I was it was funny -- funny when I went up to him and asked him to do -- yes -- -- he said no there's no way I wanna do -- but that I -- -- -- guy he jumped right -- I could see that I got it -- you know the way he even at the beginning delicate chemistry they wanted to check -- I wanted to get right into baseball -- wanna talk -- -- things that -- -- -- that are you guys don't. Just wondering how little -- grades one -- you might play in them becoming a regular thing I like ethnic I very much enjoy that interview when he does a lot of personality brought us inside the David Ortiz is home what it's like to. To hang -- with what -- I actually listen to that part of it before another hour I love it I mean I'm fascinated by what David Ortiz is counseled look like. How it's decorated does he have a personal decorator does that make the choices themselves. Just tell you they're sure that David Ortiz walked out -- game very well OK I. U I nobody in the world can pull off this year -- I don't know if you saw these three and in series in Detroit on incident it was -- had -- enormous kind of I don't foresee that tiger that would be disrespectful. And good Bolivia I can make this like it may tell you though I don't know I can make out to Fisher valid giant spaghetti sauce and and -- underlies 6177797937. Luke. Is in his car hi Luke. Yo what up guys that Luke. The -- -- it does so much herbal wrap up tonight Clay Buchholz could do for a good gate and went -- -- on -- the big game. He'd buy part of right type pitcher got beat one of ineptitude and deer meat on opposite game. -- what about the guys go for deterrent. But. Who really go it is weird. -- that Clay Buchholz policies we can look at the post season number URE over six. But he seemingly has just hit roadblocks in each of these two games. He's been he's had stretches where he's been really get it for about three innings and then he gets his -- what's last one was much worse. Feel you know it's called don't. Not pitching all that well I'm in mind -- -- result the result that's correct in that what I don't even entirely by that I thought you're writing in in gain in the game he pitched against Detroit may be. The game he pitched against Tampa I don't -- -- I don't think he was all that I have never felt comfortable with him in that game I never felt like he got himself into good rhythm he did get himself out of trouble. Once or twice before giving up the huge home run to to Longoria. But I never felt comfortable with him in that did a good run there about three how that's not enough to as a -- been up front all know that if he he never struck me is the same guy that we saw dominate throughout this regular season and I always said the reason that I trusted Jon Lester with -- as that game one starter over Buchholz. Was just the eighth the consistency and be. The ability to go deeper into games I mean it when I watched Buchholz -- with your vascular and expect tonight. I expect him to be better than he was the last two times to -- so I expect a good version but Clay Buchholz -- To a -- more than five innings I don't know 55 and -- third I'll be very surprised if he's still pitching in the seventh inning tonight. To me to be the thing that that was alarming not alarming but no the red flag much more than in -- -- the last game. Was when things start going bad for him that -- he starts slowing down to a crawl up and we know with Clay Buchholz that's what this -- he's not feeling good about what's going on. So that that is that was -- 6077797937. Ducky purple ones open for you guys. Throughout the afternoon net I hope that doesn't happen tonight I hope he does not slow things down to a crawl and it's not like I don't worry we -- we ought not just hit it well. He got to worry about the Detroit running game but it's one thing when you're worried that there's a guy on base and he's taking all up a lot of your attention what I mean this team can't -- It's one of the great advantages the Red Sox have over them is that there more athletic Detroit's softball team all right totally as well built team they're not just a softball team that the softball team that's got a few of those guys on and at the end of the bench re alike. I hope this guy doesn't have to come up again -- like it's cool what we got our big bumpers the bat third fourth fifth whatever they want guys in the -- fine. But. -- any play in those coed softball leagues were like every four he Saturday that the girl when the girls like -- every four batters has to be a girl and you're like okay you may make sure we find the girl that can hit a little bit -- gonna have that battle. They've got guys in their team that would ever heard of and -- will Brayan Peña came into the game the other day 350 pound five foot five capture did anybody really know much about him yes you did your baseball writer but I think that the Red Sox Nation in general there's I don't yeah. Brayan Pena out and watch. Everywhere and you're with -- the -- -- the tigers baseball when they had to Brian BR a one way and on a bright and Hillary out bright and you didn't even know that you -- it out and and I don't argue -- that gives a trick you know were waiting for Alex the point out such a fact I was just trying to prop up Alex once again. By the way. Alex what a story you wrote today -- I know you didn't read it now though but by you -- it okay. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Ever since you were so ever since you were so salty last week when we did this -- passing came -- and I did you assign. Bradford I've I've on -- you know what does that have to do it by Twitter attack had nothing to do matured -- anyway I could follow that. Before -- so -- say that -- Alex wrote the preeminent. Base running -- like -- rhetorical -- WEEI dot com but I would bring some -- -- what really a really good story on Detroit's base running we really short three or four words -- -- be -- you guys -- need to stay up until 5 in the morning you -- Alex worked too -- I see -- at the airport he's like drag any looks like he's half dead just right about Detroit's base -- you write for three minutes don't -- to dream my friend -- dream. -- some tricky -- talk about Clay Buchholz about being good beam that. The first four innings now -- you know analytic such -- credit them they run Peter Gammons Daly is great site. First four innings in the playoffs so far hitters are hitting 207 against -- -- it. I was a bit -- -- there's something more are you wanna find out in the fifth and sixth inning that I would like to know what goes on active but I think that -- in my point. They've been pretty good he's been pretty good many of these these walls after that Mike here you go I did I know you wanted to stack. The fifth in the sixth inning on. 450 yes I think that's pretty good and but but but -- period after the fourth and. Comment on playwright. I've heard them quoted when he talked -- what may have a better picture partially was. Pitching to contact more -- two -- -- -- -- a elect -- -- -- -- its thirty year low pitch -- he'd -- -- and bright and I elect and the player -- art it's been a return of the the left circle -- of the clay who. -- -- can read them expert ever between pitches over analyzing every edge and pitchers. Every page for slowing him. And I feel like it's been stated that and that and I and I -- -- quote about what you -- from -- brought more purple strike may. Sounds like it's going to be more at saint tonight and I'm concerned. Well is good point because when he turned his career around. One of the things -- every one point it was that all -- from ground balls he was gained great pitch counts he wasn't worrying about strikeouts. But I think clay buckles is figure out what Clay Buchholz it is right now. And you go to these two playoff games I do you think it's a byproduct somewhat of you know you can't expect this guy was was good pick up -- left stop. Yeah there was encouraging signs I think has been encouraging signs in the playoffs but with the but the biggest encouraging sign to get the point where you say. That's the guy won't you left off live. In early June. That's when you get past the fourth the fourth inning that's when you start turning those stats are right and that's again that's the concern and I hope that there's a short hook for him tonight I I can't imagine given that Justin Verlander is waiting for them in game seven. That there is going to be -- why did. But -- wide berth if given her for Clay Buchholz and it couldn't get music keep viewers liked to have them a lot of even if it's hot ticket that allowed the the anyway. You say I hope there's a quick court forum is a conversation out the window the way the John Farrell's manager Wally I mean he's had a very quick hook for everybody but. Other than PV the other nine even then he pulled them fairly early in that you know to get much of a choice -- -- I. I'm not there's no second guessing a Ferrell I'm not saying always believe in everybody in so long -- -- we didn't do that -- Buchholz but. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- About what John Ferrell has done in the playoffs I hated the fact that he didn't pinch hit. Four for Stephen Drew in the third game in Tampa -- I didn't love the quick -- just that one game I didn't love the way he handled a few things since then and other than that. I think he's done a fantastic job. Handling this team to the playoffs. Guiding them from from this whole road to redemption thing where they were last year to where they are today. Are creating the guy has an Iraq allowing them to win that and then -- and then so far the strategy in the playoffs I think has been good short of one game. Now Jim Leland has announced they line -- change sort of the only one is that Alex Avila will play tonight so you worried that his knee was so batter that he was actually can cost he will be back in there tonight Mark -- will not be -- Victor Martinez will not be catching nor will Brayan Pena who is gigantic -- I can't believe they -- -- play on the required him to cover third. There's no way that was -- you talked about though nobody is so fat you're gonna -- at a sprint down a third of why wouldn't you have the shortstop cover third base for me that was a fascinating part -- -- the -- famous fast while the shortstop covering third because news coverage -- while with the commissioner and major news covering -- I I know they give why. Why would you do it that way you're you're asking a humongous. Fat -- to run from senator to third base and quickly make and athletically away. At third base why. Because you have a guy at first you're gonna have the first baseman charged you have the second baseman go cover for why have the first baseman charge. Because that's typically what you're doing a -- Bob but the third date we don't have. Do you know how do we need war eagle we need one of your corner infielders to charge -- in Albuquerque falls off. To the first base side prince gonna stay -- home elect Cabrera charge shortstop goes to third to second baseman goes to second in the you don't have to but that's what they did I guess my point is you think it's better to have. A gigantic fat capture running to third base and having to make and I'll let you play -- traded Jose Iglesias. Yes that's right I -- -- -- that -- I don't know if you do but that's the real play well also have I didn't know -- -- have the will play -- what's aside for the we'll play I don't know don't -- would we want to take out of that will hold a terrible big proponent of the real players what you're saying but I probably not in general. But when you're Brayan Peña behind the plate. Who's it literally this big fat you Obama get into this next it's on seventh at 797. Three -- every play every calls plus the we'll play in depth falcon Bradford WEEI. Plus she's a pretty good wondered. His double single and struck down he turns the bond dropped to down to third Cabrera is up -- -- one play first base. He gets it and now racing and -- there is -- drugs football buddy. First baseman and he's gonna be CP sacred -- -- had a race down there to cover the bag and the throw was late. And how -- will metal woods going first to third on a bunt that was fueled by the third baseman. And the other -- almost guided the way rob Drake had left. -- umpires certainly interfered on that play the tank released the possibility of attack was blocked. But it in the third base umpire rob Drake. I don't think you would have either way but -- rob -- -- he's really get people really laying down. And it turns around -- Glover out and hit straight -- I don't think you imagine the Pena was gonna go 270 degrees around to make a tactic that only needed to do was turn ninety degrees do with lack of the funny thing was so far and you thought -- -- about you -- the umpire and there's nothing about Brayan Peña that impressed me and -- you slowed down and bring it back. Guy who's really short ones that anyway. Here's a few things on the -- like first of all if it's if if if if if -- charging and supposed to be charge and why is he the one who takes the throw first -- The second baseman is not the one who's covering the -- now -- yet to run behind it sadder but it was not a well executed play in general -- the first baseman was charging. Tonight he according to the to the play by play call there the throws the fielder and infielder throws across the third and I'm pretty sure that's our capital maybe he was charging in backtrack right what went on a third with a once it was. Put down third base my point here is the wheel -- the wheel -- wheel -- of -- -- -- -- football we'll play I understand some of the difficulties with it why you don't wanna use it all the time. But in this situation. With your catcher being as big as he has one look at fact -- it of course I can move. He you'd trust the guy that's honestly not a big athletic guy is a pretty -- trust him to run down the third base. And and then make my god running sliding tag by the where's the picture on the play the pitcher did apparently nothing here's what I why -- the pitcher -- the first base side and the third baseman cover the third base side or do it the other way. But in this case it's a righty pitchers so he's fallen -- outfit to. Agreed with the pitcher should be doing is backing up third right and and when you see the -- not to make it there because as you said he's a little portly. Then you -- you able to cover the base at the pitcher also has the cover some amount of some amount of for the bond today again -- listen to a fifth to meet the fast they play even though. Nobody scored -- got nothing came of it right both capacity play because your pinch running middle Brooks who is not as fast Bogart's the reason they do that. They don't want they don't number one they don't want to burn the position. They want they don't want to burn a player by using Barry. Com. They also feel more confident with middle -- -- security something like that because as Gary -- Arsene has said back in August 1 of the things -- Bogart's hasn't been able to do. Which is work on his base running he went to the WBZ. During spring training when they work. Odd that exact any database turning mistake I think yeah -- seem as well it didn't get a good read off the -- and ended up making a base running mistake didn't cost them -- so you feel better about middle bricks being that spot the reason that it's not Barry. It because again and they don't wanna -- position they'll also according to them. Want to get him -- wanted to get him feeling good about going is a defense for plays a way to get a feeling good about us now now what -- a cold night or lukewarm -- run in the total it's this cold is a lot of -- this bill if I guess we got those -- have gigantic heaters and there's cold everywhere but the dug -- you know it's like you can't do -- Jamie Lee Curtis -- perfect -- Olympics if you -- I really dated myself about reference to -- Yes but the Big Apple but I think going to be the -- over -- billion -- and couldn't really which puts kids first I don't know -- Jane Fonda and then that might do it -- good children that if I don't still true lies that was debut in earnest this no it was not so what about. The trading play certain places you think from Sweden. -- True -- find a minute before that using different suite of -- just one more thing about the and that it to the after the play yes. After the play they intentionally walked -- So dumb -- down they know since it was. -- -- Don it was like he didn't realize who Jacoby Ellsbury was so we walked there was like a way to just -- -- fast is apparently what made bombs on what may be even worse the rest of the difference you know it even -- -- -- it marked the second time -- -- basically admitting -- We you know what we -- we're gonna do for you this what really different. We put another runner right going to for no reason yeah I mean I guess -- you want the righty lefty combination wanna walk Ellsbury because you wanna get the Victor real fine but then you Papelbon -- around -- right -- you know don't just -- comes it was a very strange move hey Jim -- -- has not been perfect. That's for sure horse excellent 777979837. Go to well Wally in April I want. Yeah you're going to want to watch our -- -- an analyst Brad did.
