NFL Sunday: Analyzing the Pats Defense So Far

Sep 15, 2013|

The boys chat about what they've seen from the Pats D so far this season. The D played very well last week and the front 7 looked ok with Wilfork and Chandler Jones leading the way. The boys discuss how Wilfork can use a break here and there at this point of his career. EJ Manuel and Gino Smith did play ok against this D however. The guys get into the play of Talib and the interception that led to a mini brawl Thursday night.

We spent a lot of time so far talking about Patriots offense and via the issues. Let's talk about the defense which for the most part has been very positive so far the first two weeks. I was really pleased that Mike may -- went out of his way to say. That Rob Ninkovich might be the most under appreciated player underrated player in the NFL I. -- America -- -- I will stay at sit here and bang the table in coal Rob Ninkovich one of if not the most underrated player in the league he's a free agent after this year at the county from around. I agree review except that we -- to sue several weeks -- we keep calling it. Residents and he knows he's perfectly read is not a deteriorated and we keep Paul Callan always having to we haven't done yet. But I -- -- may -- went out of his way to talk about and I I was happy about I'm glad to report goes and does he deserve that he deserves the credit and I always wonder where is the -- resolute contingent out there -- upset with the patriots for a government cap space that they and that could have been an issue that can have addressed the receiver all those kind of things. And I'm looking at a guy like rob. The -- warming -- now we're going to read just a year but Joyce -- acquired contract extension from the rest of -- never hear about forties up after next year there's just there's a few cars on the roster that that makes me believe that's what that status for his marches under spending from wide receiver -- every debate. Yes office did the great debate this year is going to be Euro spikes. Because he's a free agent and someone's -- overpay him. And I double barreled thing yeah I don't wanna ball penalty but I mean she's a great one supper he really is but he is if you you know we are are going to go -- you maybe you'll prepare you for him. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Maybe it's just these two particular weeks but I'd love to see Mike Reese is always radius -- of doing the breakdowns and given a sort of medical sub stuff. Vs regular. I know the first game theory laden and played virtually the entire payments of defense how to buffalo we had -- no we got a note after this -- they were in Nicole. Almost -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- The title clearly Bill Belichick is -- to about what you didn't. We do feel like an hour of that list. Help me out here and especially with you guys who break down film as I watched the game. It seemed as though Vince was being neutralized -- I think Vince is the best nose tackle in football he's -- pro bowler he says an all pro he's as good as the areas. And -- I really didn't seem much on him now was nick mangled and you pointed out during the break Vladimir do costs that good against in this week. I think there're couple things that there was there were inflate their -- -- there's no bigger -- eventful for the miracle Lester single -- and so you have to just have to disintegrate missile I think bit. He is always going to be a point of emphasis and I think too costly very well and do -- is not a great player and has your plus the league but it you played very well -- main goal is one of it is truly effective counter points. Across the league and then we vehicle like this before it. Who seems that a hundred hours it's gonna you know you're you're gonna be -- especially when -- -- ago eggs into please ninety. Fourth tobacco related -- played very well on the lot -- Jo piazza but to me I think you need to have. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- And Rubens the other thing to understand here is if it's not all reps are not equal if if we're talking nickel sub plays -- -- -- Russian defense -- -- -- the -- -- is a little more tiring in the direct run place. -- can do a hundred directly employs a row as opposed to an extended pass rush for six and eight seconds. So those kind of plays in asking -- and his body type to do sixty snaps that's a lot different than sixty snaps of a 5050 regular -- breakdown. America to -- was good battle is having studied the one player. But I would imagine that that's probably a factor receive higher nickel snapped games you don't expect that body type to 11 on one point guard for for an extended drive. You know to be of the having visited I think if it was a a center who was less than the mangled you know we we you look across the league the guys who were like is it before really truly effective counterpoint stood to Wilfork. He got two of the best this last -- -- -- really look at it more demand go back to back we have no idea I think -- you'll Vince could get by if he was facing a senator who was as good but again and I'm -- -- public sentiment -- bill hall of -- and so you know if you. As a one game here in their like that there I think that's excusable. Let me in because we're talking about mangled -- get this out of the -- now -- the play at the end of the game. Arm. There is no justification for diving back from the guys' knees ever having set all lack. After you make the interception give yourself opera don't and he sort of acted like you know OK maybe I'll go for a little more. Any kind of set himself up to get hit there. I I actually. Think -- -- And turned his head while toll was still -- What always isn't going -- -- was -- -- on dudes dive into -- -- right I don't that he was cut block cut cut tackling if you watched most often -- in the NFL interception happens they'll try to tackle kind of equipment out of duke in the communal. Wrap -- generally. And corporate legal lets them to a -- snap after snap basis each played a cut block. It's so it's kind of what they do so or -- called it certainly it's okay on the play and image to a after and I think it hit and that particular case. It is error might have been doing it to close the sidelines there Malaysia -- like he was gonna give himself up loud but it is kind it is us. Your pop out of bounds except that that the mangled thing with a little bit distressing but I think even. If you just a football into watching it I I think the D'Brickashaw Ferguson and wondering in their when guys should throw punches I think it got to be a bit. March when you have to understand your division game I don't know how to handle rejection of the two guys -- but it does affect next week Korea this is college so well all of that they will review it because the one was an abuse of official call a special. That's not that's the one that made you choose another day paid million of an ugly game just because -- got to stand up her body. You'd hate to lose a guy or something dumb like that because this was after a change of possession out of bounds literally no teams over the -- so. And that could be the bad football sort of pitch to them Melvin got a bigger problem had just in the point there. What did you guys think of the quarterback play for the jets. There there was there from a jets fan I'm mildly encouraged. By geno I side I think it did of the mistakes that he beat rookie mistakes in they think it's on him at this point is cornered there fixable. The reason I ask that is that early on he hit a couple of a pretty nice chunk plays. And and I am trying to figure out how much credit to like give geno Smith and how much -- I give the patriots secondary for. Couple those big plays early on. Now they tighten that up later on but as you pointed out Matt nobody was the on the ball effectively in the second half anyway. The other of the so again how much credit -- I -- how much -- like you know the second half -- -- -- -- -- I think part of it -- was in wrote about it before the demon you know in the in the wake of the ball -- when you're facing a mobile quarterback you don't -- opinion is back and -- after the quarterback I think the breakdowns that the -- had were. Win someone over in the play I think -- how to read a good game I think there were times -- Chandler Nikko and in in did it a couple of the guys over in the play they allowed Smith to get out of the pocket and kind of do some things in in. I don't think. Pass rush was the number one priority I think was more policy containment. And you don't wanna you wanna have breakdowns there and have him get out of pocket -- for having ninety yards this footage of people author of and often call for were blitzing. You hit you you can't yet do most of course not -- -- -- -- but Egypt but the patriots -- reasons it -- I think one of the reasons that look like he had some time to pass the ball. Was because the patriots were almost -- point eight -- -- -- actually yeah -- did -- adoring we're back in the sacks that they had were. Coverage sacks at war and put its strategic and doing different purpose in the event that you have one do you leave some also but everybody's but I think the people were cynical would. Need to go to war -- that is usually where you're getting points for the had to -- -- -- not sustainable and it is expected to -- we've had just -- against this particular -- quarterback and off the road from last -- -- this -- so. I would go to around I have -- the team is purposefully doing this having him. You want him to have extended -- you want embassy will result. The portrait and the other side of the ball the jets to -- the pitchers they shall Richardson is a guy there reviews on the inside at the nose needed to some Missouri I think that's kind of wrecks on the over the he -- he plays over the gore -- -- the guard to pull them out of the protection and drop out and be a middle -- It's that the the philosophy against Tom in this bad weather with the run game not established and the receivers that are still coming along. Was to overload -- I think really both teams are kind of doing the same thing it's for different reasons for -- -- -- -- -- -- and you know. It's so that -- not just flying guys -- pass them along to pick it up and run for -- -- -- -- different -- that a technical football term middle rat rat is that a technical Steve speaks next often called radical you know big snacks is. What's his name he's the Big Three 150 pound used to be 400 lost fifty pounds -- demand. -- they did was he's coming in for Sedrick Ellis -- doses of discussion about it and actually put a pretty game at a at a tough time moving him telling me that front seven the front seven is if you're pretty good run. We'll take a break when we come back cat because the patriots don't play this week we get an opportunity to look at. Some things a little more league wide as well we get into some of that as well we'll take you around the NFL in the 11 o'clock hour. This is NFL Sunday presented by -- -- -- insurance -- a five star agency can do for you at a Penske dot com.
