General manager of the Boston Red Sox been -- joins us on the AT&T -- AT&T forgy LT eat good morning about how aria. -- -- well hey is this going to be a comfortable. Week with Tito in town and uncomfortable week or just business as usual. Well -- that a total because I'm out scouting for the draft. A until the I hope that cultural problem people direct excitement result for -- listen. I don't you know I'd obviously be some attention. -- has -- back in the into the final law so. Will be a tough games certain numbers -- our audience. How would you describe your relationship with Terry when he was here based on what your role was when he was present. I think -- good thing you know as assistant GM for part of their parents and different roles earlier. And you you know troll you're just. You know it's that that relates to the managers really more or longer function you know he did it shouldn't matter what -- equally mean that and try to try to be available on and and so that's that's what I was doing over over the course of time obviously you -- Rhode Island some of those at the end and -- get -- know people pretty well and I appreciate what TO. It for me while he's here so help me a lot thought a lot of our car how the team works how about. Was Justin Masterson for Victor Martinez was that your idea and why does that deal looking now looking back obviously it was a short term fix and and Masterson is pitching well Tito -- yesterday. He's his pace did you think did you see that common. You know frankly now we we didn't see. And performing quite like this as a starter we thought that he. -- the par would be a good Major League starter or or road -- earlier. I mean it's probably exceeded that and we're starting role so. I shouldn't be meowing we should be too surprised but those is -- pretty. It is recurrence of -- man matches as a from going back the draft news. That out of practice at the -- make up on the board out here and you know he. Also agreed to it he doesn't answer unconventional way. You know really it's commentator there's. Physical size and strength and so put together the blues make. Separated and Vrabel didn't. Draft. A lot of good work -- and that sort of course out here get him but that's foreign and you know part of the other issues. At the time. You know I would have done the same thing has really. Been built analyzed at the time we were. Try to get in the playoffs certain and Victor Martinez certainly helped him a while some needed that that -- -- at a key position and -- whisper. The Chinese here -- I'm not surprised at all just he's doing I'm depressed and that success yet he's probably even -- he -- it. -- we were we were just talking about Jacoby Ellsbury obviously struggling this year but nick kfar writes today that'd be. Smart took the talk to him to get them know that to get talk about signing and keeping them here. I just assumed that those talks never happened that when you -- Boras guy you don't talk about an extension you wait till. He hits free agency if you really wanna keep a player and you usually lose them. Is is that accurate do you not ever talk to Boris or anyone -- -- office about extending Ellsbury. -- he you know because those very proper treatment monster years rather than an opportunity to talk. Scott and -- of those. Those years and in order before spring training early in spring training. About its status and they need here we of course are one year deal. Are there are -- so those are keys before he went to hearing but there as far as they can you talk about lost and you talk about. You know other options -- prospect options there are other other -- Scenarios that are. And we've had those conversations just -- and in this case we. We agree. You know before this season that we would. I'm defer to the end of the season. That's our that's our verification right now -- -- -- never say never and things can change that our expectations and pick up the current session after the season. What's wrong with him in -- it in your expert opinion what is what is he doing wrong the season. You know I think he's you know some goodies. The combination of things and part of this is the speculation. But. At least we've seen our lefties are already here. You know -- -- in the near your left hand hitter and and use your other opportunities sort of get into -- -- this sponsor. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Keys though that unlucky. On all of us. It's all spread -- people is nothing really. Alarmingly different pattern from the underlying numbers there. Are separated from a percentage as he's. He's still during the Michael -- tactical there are things that you don't start well and as he's healthy you know the bat speed there at school there where he looked like it got to me it's. You know. Get a lot of important -- stop talking about it or think they're. You know that this. By far the best outcome for. All of a sister she's Soviet who didn't. You productive -- -- our record that helps them -- subsequent games and so -- that can happen. Those underlying numbers though Ben aren't good for middle Brooks you know you look at 52 strikeouts and 183. Plate appearances to 36 on base percentage are you concerned about his progression here and your team. Yeah -- go through he's still developing as a player immediately -- and when you do arm from arm -- numbers aren't. As good -- look at right away I think it was. A player like well who has so much. Talent and potential or potentially it's such a long term value for the Red -- As long as we're seeing progress and aren't pursuing or better. -- we're seeing her attention to detail on. There and and and that it was physical skills though there and all that then you know we -- -- -- and you know it's obviously you possibly performing better and we expected to. It's not. You know he he got the big leagues. Frankly the sooner then we saw last year you had a situation where you'd call that unprecedented in -- really well. You know we it is nor his timetable we will go back to spring training Torre what was really expected it to be. But I'm later this year and I and I last year. That happen quicker the plays that brought the president or the longer the -- figure now. But he's 2002. Outside are serious about our. They've been -- question here can keep you analyze the resurgence of Clay Buchholz is at barrels presents as it Niemi is is a -- Pedro plays a role in it or is is the guy organically reaching a new level in his career. I think all the boat and -- over goes back to a player. Players are more responsible for their own success from Justin and -- are also. I think clay. -- it came off of 2000 all. Feeling. Physically healthy and I bet I've been beaten me here are here. And he -- industry -- strong. That kid fresh mental outlook. And and feeling good physically healthy is able. -- able to get a lot out of spring training. More media he has in the past it -- these aren't physical issues. And those spring training became not just a better pitcher getting ready for the seasons and opportunity to work out some things for him in the games. -- -- China the games the ability to. Moved the ball and you know has recruited -- direction from both sides of the plate. Mixes pitches. Can bounce off both sides the things that he did well in 2010 minutes of success successful. We're seeing that yet but not the first time we've seen a pitcher. He's got back there I think he got past. All right been additional won't tell us who your scouting with the Angels where your scouting. I've been Powell her. A little little bit infectious little north -- this week -- All will reconvene in Boston arm in the middle of this coming week. And it's it's an exciting time for our scouts -- prospectors who doesn't. Added every day since late January and course in the seventh pick in the capital. Everything that I think I answered that it's it's an opportunity. Yet figured out there and works at a I didn't -- and figure out there -- Our bench they've traveled the talk to -- to get home. And sharing that with -- -- -- on the AT&T hotline AT&T forgy LT -- front office report is brought to -- Salem waterfront hotel and marina. And by celebrity cruises. Buzzer beaters next.
