Mustard and Johnson Sports Radio WEEI. We'll get to those phones in just a bit as you know we've been talking in NFL free agency throughout the morning is a officially. Under way teams can negotiate with their current players keep them off the free agent market here to explain this in so much more is WEEI dot com's Christopher price good afternoon Chris. But I during great so I can do a much better job explaining the difference between this particular window or free agency and the next window free agency that happens on Tuesday for those who Bob May not be completely clear on. Well this debate kind of -- period between now and really. She used anywhere you can talk to their own guide the team cannot announce anything they can't come out and say. We've signed so when Soto or you're twenty million dollar contract are very early -- or so it. That opened a window where teams in ought to their -- guys in -- Doolittle -- it is it's it's very twentieth it's it's like -- but not camper you know Indian. I'm unclear what do you mean exactly -- -- yeah it it is it it's so weird period and I'm not quite sure why beautiful decided to do it this way but it is you know this is the situation where it right now. Army you know we do know that there are some things that are that are you know going on out there I don't think the feature to too heavily involved. I obviously think that you should have been going on an article in the you know what -- -- You know discussions have been going on between their -- in in in the -- Tokyo discussions going on of course all the -- Lester underneath the -- Did their talks -- -- in you know the doctor ordered the pins are really good start to pick up on Tuesday that would -- easier to -- Clark. We're gonna see the big splash in the big news because a quicker quote epic Mike Wallace. So the company political future is secure probably fairly early. Chris we got a caller earlier. Who said he had heard the story that -- could -- went back into the ball game let's say against the ravens are refuse to have you heard anything like that. No neither side you know I -- I haven't heard anything like that the -- to really interest in a in the that there. Does -- mean if you're looking into specific -- for the patriot obviously you're gonna get that wide receiver position they'll they'll know what they're not Welker you're whoever is going forward but you know YouTube looked cornerback spot it until we get the guys that I don't think. It's a word afraid tried in I know that was the big talk over course the week particularly without auditors legal trouble you don't know -- you're gonna happen or go forward. It would absorb additional flexibility there with -- or report. I don't looking to lead to the guy you'll spend ten million dollar the Euro could never struck more than a million dollars a year. Our quarterback Oregon -- law it and so I I don't think that the -- -- is going to be the guy -- break that glass ceiling. He go for ten million note to leave immediately collect the putrid and say all right look or an interest in -- that a million dollar deal we'd like our carbon New England. We work together three or four year deal work -- -- six million I think the preacher talk about it but I think that they're very you know so he wants more money. In the future or will it be different and I think he's gonna Mubarak do you think that there are some. Really -- alternatives -- sort of a valuable and free agency in -- are currently at the quarterbacks. All for instance what free agents with the patriots be interest -- interest. I think Britain grown to be Antarctica. -- regard -- that you cornerback out of Atlanta you come off -- -- think Buehrle got a relatively cheaply but -- -- he's a pretty solid -- has been around for long time they think you would combat. Considerably. Smaller price tag that they did what you'd have to figure for Talib you know they're there -- -- veteran guys out there that they think you could get more value for. -- what rate you know I mean you know it again it's all about values it that's popular notes will be brought some stability to the position and I know that those featured are very impressed by what you've been able to do but. I think the price tag in this market these two are against you. I'll say that as well and I talk to carefully -- optical player of the week or so ago. There's a lot of really quickly -- it -- terrific quarterback should be market out there and free agency here in the drought. The creature would be more inclined to move on from a -- against. If you look at some that are currently go. Speaking of are moving on there is a story in the Cleveland plain dealer about the possibility of an interest in mallet. Com have you heard anything on now would you move from if you could in and talk about the other quarterback they haven't camp. I haven't heard anything concrete on that -- you know again after being at accomplish their. Clearly market for a guy like right now out there because the level quarterbacks -- obsolete -- it's such that you could move. Move a guy like that for a second or third rounder from the putrid a lot of second rounder -- correct -- Because I invested a third round group work in the regular -- Between -- -- meet him you're pretty good quarterback people say well you know we hadn't been anything at you're brilliant you're big in any meaningful corruption unit earlier predicted -- you can really tell people. And all when it comes to Ryan mallet. Because here's a guy who were -- an -- guards in troop western college in your eye out for the next few years for relatively cheap money. In so. I think there is a market out there for a guy like whether it's Cleveland whether -- -- and they go entity was initially thought to be expected to retrieve personal. Oak -- our search that failed but. You can look at it here fourteen doctor wrote this about a week or so broke we're now it would be a pretty good fit I'm not saying that he's -- the second coming the Brady but I am saying it. You -- Gets something form right now is the -- most treatable ship I think it does. In you'll agree that certainly this draft that there's no IG three all -- -- don't know there's not a I think that there are some decent quarterback out there in the -- but I think you know when you look at -- a group of guys like geno Smith and Matt Barkley and in in the it -- that -- using EJ Manuel. I think there's an interest in me is the typical liberal guy like archer with you know in the draft -- and everything you know and -- they think -- the -- you'll look throughout the opportunity for. A lot -- archy burger meat that are running in that group but there's none of those guys in -- -- when you can look at that guy with their parents say. He's going to be the car or truck or -- -- hitch our wagon to -- figures. Well you know speaking of quarterbacks and we have noted that beyond the usual suspects at at the top of the heap before that we always discuss. Back quarterback. A Leeds pool has been expanding particularly last year with a three rookies. Does that give Wes Welker. Plenty of opportunities to go play with a quarterback maybe not as good as Brady but certainly in the next level. British -- with Greg I think you do you realistically let you know that let's throw out three quarters of the game because. -- they're not don't have the salary cap room okay great if you can make a real compelling argument. If you're Wes Welker Wes Welker representation. To take a relatively competitive you'll say from Denver. From India nuclear what reports -- the tablets great interest in him. Of if you could go to situationally I could catcher -- US Welker you know the -- Wes Welker -- here -- Arctic under the but it seems our. You could be a veteran difference maker Dell would -- that he that are detected Welker used to again one -- the suspect -- that this. I there was nothing. Solid that are heard about that a bit but there's not one team that I think -- welcome -- -- big break your quick -- In Houston as a guy who could come in in the veteran difference maker you'll. I guess not pretty suspect not for it was going to be creating money but a competitive offer with what BP offered to. What was the goal of Welker is it. To state we're Brady and win a championship or does he wanna finally get that big contract that his eluded him so far. That's bigger question Craig Barrett that they're really when you're talking about -- are personally being -- the relationship between the putrid and Welker. Is the most symbiotic relationship in the NFL in that. -- need each other more than any other high profile. It'll be each player in the NFL are not popular or Mexico quarterbacks are as part of the system or an extension of the coach but I think Welker as a guy who. Needed to New England system in the New England system needs Welker -- that relationship in the air group I firmly believe you're going to be packed -- I don't know. What are you open number that over the dollar at this point but I think the relationship between the two. Suggests that -- need each other in so they're going to be able to find some sort of common ground sooner rapidly. Is deal a little bit annoyed that the patriots in terms of or he was treated with entitlement situation and don't forget ballots are call -- it happened twice. Where the Ryan comment about the feet and in many another incidents. Is this is chants -- to get at the cage door which is now open and get a chance to apply outcome. In you know samples some other teams that create. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- You know you do at 4 o'clock and I think it's politics and current but I think. In the year when you're out there you'd better realize that this is the best situation where I really do I think that. This situation makes it could be too much sense for me in the air for him to go somewhere else at this stage of his career learn all the laughter. Workable new quarterbacks work it'll pollute locker mobile coaching staff. You how to relationships it's been built up here doing little but of course the last six years you -- extraordinarily. Mature a -- erecting the greedy feel really. Was a prelude to a lot of ways figured something double. OK see you actually believe that. Brady did do that lobbying that people have speculated that he did. That he was not gonna take this cut without saying hey guys do it from my body Wes Welker. Yet I I honestly believe that he's been very rather than in the past to -- -- personnel issues and he's been very very close out about you know. You know and letting the personal guys make the personal -- letting the coaches and what do you make the most but in this instance. It was -- specifically within sight or at least from the web look at these two guys are not just. Teammates there extremely close friend single -- think he should be good for goodness sakes they're they're very very tight. And I also think that greedy. At this -- career. Those who wore the prospect of starting all over here Lou. With the dollar slot receiver whether it's due to Yemen -- -- harder or whatever this that I really liked this the guy who you're eminently comfortable where. Beginning -- it just makes too much sense for both sides. -- recruited quarterback feelings into this why are accurate to finger makes too much sense not for -- not. Is there any scenario where. Welker is totally overwhelmed by another team's offer. Yeah it did a couple of things out there that would present him with a -- our offer most notably glam look there I think -- -- agreed -- the the team that. Is right on the cost would be really competitive because I'm not -- that are -- fuel mixture but they're really heading in the right direction. Lot of relief smartly I think a lot of really Smart personable. They have eight on the bills to spend on the pick -- out something like forty million dollars to. There are looking at 45 right now but what he wore just thinking from way an accident though isn't on the field would he have. A productive relationship with -- -- Well I don't know that you would have the same -- relationship be you have to bring your mean he's got all put it between if you don't -- looking goes to Miami New Mexico under Baltic. You know it will be competitive and it'll still be you know one of the better wide receiver maybe we'll what are the character best slot receivers that we need. But it is not going to be the Wes Welker that we saw you're also think it's important role and you're just for that the context that congress -- there's an awful lot of people around the league or watching Wes -- situation. Because there are a lot of really cool it. Don't receive result there are called the next generation guys sure like Percy Harden in the Victor Kuerten who are there coming up untreated the oral or you're treated -- terrible. And are looking at this situation with Welker and looking at what was he looked like it really dollar for the current. You think out of crescent that's a great point we're not talking very briefly earlier -- before Wes Welker do we think about slot receivers. -- you do. Not it didn't. And it helped it is great with the proliferation of the spread offense over the last five years he is really your -- -- -- right he was the first. To really dispel a lot of -- -- people how about slot receivers just think erroneously remember the office. Welker proved it you could have a slot receiver act like a big time wide receiver you can get where FitzGerald morning. But you can get that same level production out of the slot where you -- -- you get from an outside -- we didn't necessarily need to before welcome -- currently in retrospect there are a lot of currently. Are now looking at this contract its -- set the bar for the next generation dark apartment. V you know that the premium and -- you know the Victor -- they're going to be looking it to you as a Hewlett as a at that took precedence for them in their future negotiation. Any defensive line help you get Freeney a premium Seymour. Crew Burke. Com do you see anybody in that that list that might be interest into the patriots. I did -- and -- get the one name that really in doubt for me it did there's no one really. It will big sexy name out there -- -- think the patriots would be interest in the didn't really keep coming back for me is is might be you know button picked the I really think it -- from. Yeah being you know growth country it was a it. Because dilemma for the jets for the last few years it was an undrafted guy. The panel clear -- well but the boot -- got really insult to your important remember that your defense -- -- you might be a good signaling what you've got to penetrating power structure but it's the kind of guy who youth group -- alongside Wilfork and I think it makes for very good effort formal combination of but in terms of free can see their little big east and to avoid being out there that I think -- interest in this that we talked about other some really would mean in the draft order -- also. Really quality defense and apple in the strap yeah. Column in it beat me be on the road federal this year but. Have to start -- political will for -- -- thirty -- we go -- -- last couple years you have to start thinking about what you were either going to. Take it off the field in limited is perhaps going forward or we're gonna have to start finding that next simple shortcut on the circuit is going to be in -- -- but I think you have to start bolstered its defense the political. Any possibilities. Of the second coming of Cameron Wake with these two cut Canadian for par plays they sign -- They're a couple of really interesting prospect who really aren't warranty. Or he or is it more than -- because -- it really was able to perform. At a high level can't he argue with you you could occur first rounder at USC. If you didn't have the -- probably went to -- you have Sony label -- a pretty good numbers and you know well. I nor does it really intriguing. And I think. In a perfect world -- steady in May be bigger variable thing you. What sure contributing couldn't get them last your room like right you. -- read your article yes -- really good you sure your power structure in the cabinet that looked like right. And anger -- people are there that the guys who. That would be chucked at the culture that but -- there's more to venture out tortured like -- got and it's -- it's interesting that you know you're in the in the pursuit of you know it would. You'd think outside the -- or think about the sea island and that's not that you doubted if you're gay guys who are almost -- -- already your may be yours close to being ready you would with a how level college prospect. To be perfectly equipped or -- benefit is that the position me where. To be a lot of fun between now and Tuesday and beyond of course the draft next month you'll be busy my friend. Yet that the great thing about this guys is it's never -- You don't it always open to read about road keep track what you did you. Now that's right we rejoin WEEI. Dot com all right Chris have a Greg is currently. Okay Christopher price from WEEI -- was funny as we have just -- a year round this is job now -- that you know and you know certainly we know the numbers for the patriots are through the roof ratings wise we have guy from NASA and command. Injury burns as general sales manager came into Wellesley high school for career day to your heroes -- yes I did as a matter cracked I've got he ripped up in front right in front of me I don't know says a little ghost. From all my kids they were laughing. But you know we just talked about the ratings and obviously the patriot numbers are ridiculously high. Forty EST champion you can hit like a forty or fifty share of marketplace. Rule and then you go down Bruins are actually now number two. Red Sox -- three and Celtics -- put the patriot numbers every time they play. They set a new record for Super Bowl AFC championship game divisional game. Cleveland Indians hottest team in baseball, yet remain last in attendance May 19, 2013 By AJ Kaufman 6 Comments There’s a scene in Major League where Bob Uecker, portraying the radio voice of the Indians, bemoans, “In case you haven’t noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven’t, the Indians have managed to win a few here and there, and are threatening to climb out of the cellar.” Well, that was nearly 25 years ago and fictional, but today’s reality is that Cleveland has won 17 of its last 21, and currently tops the AL Central with a mark of 25-17. No one in the majors is better than the Indians in the past month (20-7). That’s great news. The bad news, however, is the Tribe somehow remain in the MLB cellar when it comes to attendance. How can this be? The fact that I wrote on this same topic almost to the day last year – when only Tampa Bay drew fewer fans than Cleveland - may be even more troubling. Though roughly 34,000 watched a walk-off win Friday night against Seattle, perfect weather and free caps weren’t enough to draw more than 36,000 Saturday and Sunday combined. What did the Indians do in those tilts? They nabbed another walk-off win on Saturday, then the Indians crushed the great Felix Hernandez Sunday behind Justin Masterson, arguably the AL’s best pitcher right now. Fun fact: The Indians have already faced eight Cy Young Award winners in 2013: Bartolo Colon, R.A. Dickey, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Jake Peavy, David Price, Justin Verlander and Hernandez. They have won seven out those eight matchups. Simply astounding. This offseason, the much-maligned Indians front office finally made a legitimate attempt to improve the team through free agency. I’m not talking an Ubaldo Jimenez-like trade, but rather smart acquisitions that brought veterans Mike Aviles, Michael Bourn, Jason Giambi, Scott Kazmir, Brett Myers, Mark Reynolds, Drew Stubbs and Nick Swisher to Cleveland. In addition to being a fantastic place to watch a game due to great egress and ingress, with extremely affordable tickets, the best promo lineup anywhere, Jacobs Field boasts overall, cooler, less muggy summer weather than most Midwestern locales. The team also lowered beer and hot dog prices to $4 and $3 respectively. What other professional stadium in any sport offers that? I have visited 28 of the 30 current Major League Baseball stadia, and few top The Jake when all angles are considered. I say that as a baseball fan, not an Indians fan. As for the putative “economic” angle, these are the same people who spend insane amounts of money to watch terrible football every fall and show up in decent numbers for putrid basketball in the winter. Irrespective of season length, those sports charge up to 10 times the price for a ticket, and the atmosphere isn’t half as fan-friendly as baseball. I understand fans’ lack of willingness to get on board to some degree. A decent recap of Cleveland’s decade of “rebuilding” can be read here and the team suffered a horrific collapse last August. However, in addition to all the benefits of attending games at Jacobs (now Progressive) Field, fans should also realize the team has potential and often exceeds preseason aspirations at any point without warning. Cleveland hosts the rival Detroit Tigers — heavy favorites to repeat as AL Central champs — Tuesday and Wednesday nights before hitting the road. The temperature should be pleasant at first pitch each evening so you’d expect The Jake to be full to watch the best hitter on the planet right now — but don’t count on it.
