John Farrell, Red Sox Manager, on how he will fix the Red Sox

I joining us -- Fenway Park last time we talked with the manager probably jays today it reduces the manager 46 manager the Boston Red Sox c.'s John -- hey John it's not a little power you. Doing great guys are you. Judge -- pretty good -- first off congratulations. But he brought it up in your press conference. That this was your dream job well what makes it the dream job just the relationships you have with that front office and players. You know Lou there's a there's a number things you've played here you know what it's like two to play this great game in in this incredible city. The passion that drives the Red Sox and maybe create total frenzy at times. In the expectation that goes along with that and I think when you think of the history of the ballpark the organization and yes. The relationship for the people that work here the players in their clubhouse even though a number of those names have changed. This is. This is a situation that feels natural but by no means is that -- being taken for granted and think just because you come back things are going to be okay. A phonics thing that conversation had because they would John and why would why do you wanna do this are you sure you wanna do this because. What are the biggest issue since you left that that is almost the perception of this organization. The perception of some of these players that you'd be shocked to hear people. Maybe you're questioning a guy like Dustin Pedroia at times -- -- vote changing their perception is -- all about just wins. I think that's part of it I think I think the winds and create. Additional interest I think -- though it's more about how we play. The the aggressiveness the relentless -- the competitiveness that we're gonna take the field with every night. And that's built and that's fostered from how we worked inside the clubhouse. I know one thing I've got to go back in there and earn the trust and develop those relationships all over again with every player. We have to outline what we expect as a coaching staff what I what's important to meet with how we play. And I think sometimes when when you get pulled apart. I things can begin to move to faster a little bit or whether it's complaining to umpires or coming across as. You know maybe we don't care as much that's got to be brought back into an entire unit. And it's got to be talked about and that attitude has got to come out from the way we go about our work day in and day out. John you mentioned up tempo and aggressive but with us and during your press conference as a baseball -- of those listening in to watch the blue jays. As close to this year what does that mean what does that mean in your mind to be opportunistic. And that comes from preparation their coaching staff if we see opportunities where we can run. Whether it's approaches on loading time being a little bit slower than average if it's a catcher who's got an issue with previous transfer. Where we can be that much more opportunistic and in stealing bases. I think. What's most Paramount in this ballpark. Is the ability to go first and third here because we if you if you -- station to station. And and that doesn't mean we're gonna ask guys who can't run to run. You know we're going to be Smart about it. Will be opportunistic but we're also gonna play the strengths of the roster that will ultimately have once openly -- comes around next year but. I believe in trying to create some aggressiveness to hopefully create some distraction on the man at the guy on the mound. If we can split that concentration maybe that gives us a mistake or two in side the strike zone but the guy in the batter's box and capitalize on it so. We were forced to do that trauma because of the turnover there but it's also a style of play that when I was preparing against teams -- -- pitching coach. Those teams that were more diverse that you come -- -- with a number of different ways to attack Q. That was more difficult to prepare against -- the station to station a team that might have just people from home run. John you mentioned complaining of the umpires in right away one of the guys you talk about possibly having to turn around here's a guy and Jon Lester -- Last time you saw him was probably the best year he's had here in 2000 intent. In the senate seem a little bit chirpy out there an amount complaining about umpires but more portly. Watching him the last couple years what exactly was it that you saw that might have led to where he was at the end of this year it was or something -- just a subtle moves in time. You know little and John and I've sort of had. A couple of conversations so by by saying this he's no he's aware of it. But he his delivery. Went through some changes and kind of migrated into a little bit of a leg swing rather than -- more of a direct. Spot -- was landing spot with a front leg and that might not sound like a whole lot but when you take a guy that's a power pitcher when he throws the ball downhill. He's creating a little bit more deception with that as opposed to that lake swing. Then the ball that hit the flight of the baseball became a little bit more flat through the strike -- -- Carter became longer and didn't have that late power action to a so these are things that we talked about and even the last start that he had against us in Toronto on September you can see him making some adjustments to get back to that normal. Leg drive. That allowed him to be so effective that again any time we're talking about guys that were. Where maybe the performance offered a little bit. They're all healthy. So it makes you believe that you can -- gain that level performance that they -- previous and John is prime example last how hard was that for you to watch. Him -- when you could identify something you know gonna call him up NC a fix it's an extended to August is to throw a no hitter. That's going to be difficult the other stuff well this you know the fact is and -- a tree had relationships with coaches when he played it in and you know that those relationships don't ever totally go away so you sit there and and from a competitive standpoint. You you wanna you wanna beat up. You know and we had our way with them here in Boston earlier in July. But yet you watch something take place on the mound. And you know what's going on but you know you gotta keep it there and hopefully. You know capitalize on the but at some point. You like to see him finally making adjustments if he'd get back. The other guy we talked a lot about this year was Daniel Bard John I'm curious looking back on it if you. When you heard the Red Sox are gonna make that move from Daniel -- eighth inning he -- really succeeded into a starter. -- action to that and how do you get them back to the victory was on the staff when you were here. Well just go to with with the -- with the first move by you know not having not been here when that when the conversion to lose to the rotation took place you know. I can understand trying to take you pick a guy that's got all the stuff because when he map that out and he he threw three pitches for strikes. He had a ground ball pitch and he'd say you know what this guy he's got the ability to start. But the risk was taken one of the premier late inning relievers and stretching them back out but. You know we've seen we've seen what's happened since then but as far as. Getting involved him and adjusting or maybe making recommendations to adjust that's gonna require. I think multiple conversations Daniel first. To get a sense of where he's that mentally things that he's attempted. And what course of action we take going forward. The last couple years here in Boston you've heard some you know people talk about this team to be entitlement lack of accountability you talked about that accountability but I want to ask you because. As you know I've played with Omar Vizquel out in Cleveland and it's obviously the story came up up in Toronto. Was that a case of this -- wasn't the same Omar I know the guy starting every day's a 45 -- utility player -- played much. Babies are questioning the manager what was it like up there was very true. Too little Marxist. I'm not known -- -- although you know those comments were made. You know the wanting them. As I mentioned in the press conference my approach to players this news is to create trust it's created trusting environment. I wanna I wanna have I want players to feel like this the clubhouse is -- the club buses there's sanctuary where they can go and and be themselves. But yet at the same time there's a there's a level of professionalism that's expected. And that goes into being on time playing the game the right way. And so when some of the things that take took place inside a given game with a mistake was made by young player. Either. You know with a base running move or or stealing or attempt to steal in the wrong time. That was dealt with one on one in the office. And then there were other opportunities in early work where we will address those on the field with simulation type set ups. And that's where. You know -- for him to say you for for some comments to be made you know what I think we're a little by -- uninformed. -- John Lott made this pitching staff this year you were not here with their early problems against first and second inning when you go back and look over. These stats they're they're pride and overwhelming because they were sold bad early gains as they any pitching coach or manager. What does that symbolize -- is a lack of preparation a lack of execution. When a starting pitching staff consistently. Is getting hit now. First and second and you know. If there if there are. Basic elements that were there the root of it. I'm sure that would have been addressed. It'll be interesting to get feedback of guys on this on this very point but. From my approach from the approach that I we will we will use. You know the first and foremost that the physical conditioning back that as a non negotiable. You know starting pitchers have to be in incredible shape to pitch to -- plus innings. And I think for the most part guys do do that they take care of themselves. From a preparation standpoint we can boil this down to a very simple approach this is a game first first the strike's first out of the inning score first. Along with the preparation of how we're gonna attack both physically. And how we're gonna attack the opposition. I think that puts guys in the position of positive that he keeps them upbeat they have an a distinct plan of attack. And for them to go out and execute it that's where you put put up zeros and establish a rhythm of the game. Don't think anyone saw what happened coming rather in 2011 that collapsed late year in and you know Terry Francona leaving the -- he did. But you'd mentioned before the there was interest even last off season. Without a bit hard with the -- conversations with Tito both being the -- that followed him given the way everything happened. You don't know and honestly it really never got that point because once the the speculation started to mount last October. That was pretty much squelched quick in Toronto and there was an amended policy -- since. To us to do just that to not allow lateral move but. As it started to rear its head again this year and you know the opportunity in the speculation started to evolve. There was a year in conversation this year and Alex as we reviewed everything. This this season the ashes today if the Red Sox called you have interest and I said Alex I said yes I would. I mentioned that a year ago. Even though it didn't come about I don't believe it was a distraction one bit throughout the course of this past season. I think we Alex and I continue to have a very strong relationship. Two competitive people that you know you're in a competitive environment there's going to be different opinions at times but at the same time you know it's fortunate that. Things were able to be worked -- and here we are today. Don't talk to your coach -- deficit to portrait of one voice tonight. Agree gonna -- a lot of people felt that that wasn't the case here last year that there's a lot of holdover from Terry Francona made things difficult. How important is that for you and can it work if you don't have one voice. Well is the the approach will be to do just that -- I think the one thing that we will. We'll do in this is that this is kind of a system that. Will. Was developed while I was in Toronto is that from our. Advanced meetings. The common settings that were in prior to the start of every series not only does it give us a chance to. To attack the opponent. But it gives us a chance to talk about what we're dealing with where there's there's issues with our own play whether there's things in the club house. Whatever might be it gives us a common starting point twice a week. Two to talk across the table with one another. I think there's a very good working relationship. That have come from. And we'll look to establish that as well here. And I'm eager to get that -- Plaisted to begin to have that. You talked about the staff getting close he working on things you talked about about it if you talk specifically John. To potentials on this -- to have those conversations and is their chance that some of those guys come from Toronto with. -- -- rule anything out. I will say this though there there was a lot of firsts that Ben and I it's our are working through it yes there's a lot of conversations on what. Most of the attribution characteristic that we want. For each position and then the names will won't naturally attached to what we're looking to fill. In those positions so we're we're doing some background work we're doing some due diligence on a number guys and I feel confident that the people that will be here. Will be equality. Instructors. Because we have worked and the one thing that it is a beauty -- -- you can talk about. The stage in which you play on but the same basic fundamentals still apply regardless of where -- -- and that's preparation and that has work. And that is going out and doing something with a group of people that Wear the same uniform every night and really get after. The guy management here Terry Francona curious -- talking last year. We talked to him this year about taking this job -- yes I have a couple of times. And a couple times of late and coming in here on Saturday. You know we had a conversation and he was just the static entity that. I was coming in to to talk with the owners with John Tom Larry and -- about this. He was confident that that was the right fit. He was pumped up that this had a chance to maybe come to fruition and I can't thank people enough for not only is supporting all the way. But helping me become a better coach as well. Well it's been a tough thirteen months here to tell you that in Boston we're seeing that more attention has been off the field and on and I think. Red Sox fans of the -- -- better to think maybe it's more attention to be on the field now some sort of wish you congratulations and good luck.
