Former MLB OF/1B/DH and PH Matt Stairs joined D&C to discuss the Sox interviewing Tony Pena, who he played for a few years when Pena managed the Royals. Matt chats about what type of manager Tony is, how would he handle managing in Boston, and why didn’t he succeed in Kansas City. He also touches on why Pena wasn’t offered another managing job in baseball since his days in KC, what characteristics he thinks would be needed for a successful manager, and what would he do with A-Rod if he was manager.

Forgy LT good morning Matt it's a John Jerry Boston how aria. I'm doing very well or don't don't great out what one of the real reasons we talked you wish your -- stint in Kansas City from 20042006. Under Tony Pena before asking about that you probably sick of us. Could you name all the teams you played four in order. I could -- -- -- and I might take awhile but I -- that that's what mattered was Tony Pena back in the day in Kansas City Matt. Arizona it was I know he was living -- is a very good manager under the carpet guy -- so it was a player's manager. You know he'd like to play cards with the guys who like to let the -- -- practical jokes. -- unfortunately not a very good team. In Kansas City under arm. I thought it had a lot of respect all the players because you respect everybody in the nose. I hope that the game has and no wonder thing about a and -- take all the blame everything and he did five years and doesn't let a stupid courses we're teammates. How do you think that would play out how to work in Boston Matt -- know we played here -- like I like a number form. You think his style would work here with this team. I think so. Not in. You know I really didn't tell them what that particular -- a couple of outfield next reform as it's been a -- not a -- he's going to be. Tiger you worked -- was this year but well you know it's a bigger perimeter I'll competent and you're a few years and and you know got to deal with the media in New York. -- I could go I mean you -- -- and you got a remarkable Washington with a lot of energy he had in. Yours. You know the ballpark early on but impact has been involved with the players. I don't let let the -- that. Now he's opened up and up on top of the to get the job until they get to vote and it didn't bought him an extra energy and yet. What went wrong for him in Kansas city's hard you know. Wide open to those that would probably don't -- I think. There's still some -- it was still we've brought in some some veteran players and executed pretty well. And our partners that you know we struggled it's -- been five and a pitcher like you're the third. So we just we got banged up from some of the teams and -- I might have been the player you try to handle it managers -- all all the arm on the bench and you're right to make it and it is thanks. You know the American League managers. Look at a much of the concerns the most. -- out of the lineup and then I want to go to Kucera and not they have some of the national baseball in the American League east. -- it would delicate sort of a matter of very talented team and the city and I -- -- -- on double. So the players you had. We're talking to Matt Stairs who played for Tony Pena in not in Kansas he won manager of your -- was 2003. And left in 2005 give any theories why he hasn't gotten another manager's job -- Are there and I don't remember him all of us he didn't put his name on it and do an interview those home. I I don't know what the reason behind this. You know unless you want to -- to your bench coach. How many years you've been in the -- that for about 567 years you don't I mean you get a spot or you feel comfortable. That they maybe decide this sunk to get the job of it to be that manager and I'm gonna there are a lot of guys -- go live on -- used to not loved your managers someday. But you know what the -- I think the let your favorite a lot of energy. That well both know what the coach mr. expert about it and it's fun to be around. -- you've played for a lot of different managers and I'm wondering if you're general manager and you are compiling are you putting together a manager of your dreams. What what things would you take from what guys and impressionable over the years. Well. If not I think -- the it every year -- America and I can managers. That I had a chance to see a lot of them are they are you can put a lot of -- don't -- but -- I -- how. The united intensity. You know I think we're gonna try and handle the way he. A -- ballplayers you want to please everybody and was blunt about it one. I know our talent that we got it does more relaxing. You know. But and nobody black -- managers those they were player managers Wheldon restrict Keenan in game controller. To go to the players to certain veterans to. To do the -- so I case manager. There was one man Guerrero. I would -- not a problem and I despite -- -- -- -- -- -- Ol old well there -- a lot of the a lot of things. You learn from management and that's the most anybody -- in nineteen of them and then you -- from every single one of them. What was the initials of the guy and he's. Got -- leaguer or how I'm what team. They Albert that the prudent -- it's just you know it's. I think if you go back and you look through my career. I think it's pretty easy to figure it I was manager. No one didn't last collier and to just. The best form believe -- -- That's not easy to do look back at your career yet look at -- you had nineteen different uniform numbers. -- are computer multitude delight while working on it or cannot do you do -- what what what do you do that that that rubbed the wrong way map if you want to Els who we have what what what. This job about. I think they're -- and it is communication. You know having -- -- behind the coach coach is. You worry about it too much stuff doesn't -- managed. He was worried about position. The two best players in -- back in certain situations. You know it's a few things yeah it was just it was just an awkward gone on not. He didn't threaten -- players involved he might -- -- should never ever happen right and it. And the good thing that he just won't be remembered in that respect union respected manager. Now if he's on what you responded on here and he's very honest very straight up the -- as -- -- our plan -- that you're. And fought crap that they -- getting on these things like that Red -- -- -- advanced. The guy you couldn't stand the guy could -- was he replaced by. Davey Johnson. -- -- Oh my god they I don't know the real good. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Wallach to Sandberg you know all these guys to as one of jump out of your -- that would work that would make that would make a lot of sense. I'm not not really didn't come Watkins I'm not so it's -- market Montreal. You know Brad also have very professional guys at I don't and a one person who wouldn't be wouldn't be a bad. No I think it's. No other guys. -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- got a lot of work to meet you know that's the most important thing a Boston you don't have a guy that he got to the media side. You know and I think most candid as there or biggest -- and and you know they're -- guys. You know or are going to be accidentally trigger on towards media and gone to the -- Byrd looked a lot and Monica my anger so. Now would put them all occurred and Brad are both very special players and coaches. Not considerably candidates nature of. If you were managing the Yankees today would you sit or start Iran. Do I like -- -- like just like you know. The tour but it at the manager not that white line and -- seeing -- Could get the equipment equipment. From a manager -- onto onto the ball again I'm -- -- You know and it's a very interesting that they have that you know backhand and Curtis Granderson. Know what I didn't OK start all your reserves need. You know what what he got to lose I mean it was a great there's just regular guys and they Rodriguez you can just sort of -- Verlander can get the best numbers. You know against Verlander and use it to 67. You know it's it's -- where. I don't understand how people can struggle so bad we have a hitting coach. Who can -- should go to watch videos played on just started too late and when you start to lately notable played -- a possible I -- and -- All the I don't know what to use. You know so it's but I think in American -- of not plan on Parrish on a collision at third base. You know so but you know what contract and they -- You know what guys age in different ways I mean he was up in the big leagues at eighteen right. I mean he he was a quick he matured quickly grew up quickly he was the stars a kid couldn't -- that he's just done at 36. I mean it's happened Jim Rice was done at 36. Well I don't -- and didn't. He got to sit back and do what kind of helped -- of the -- the younger age you know and those -- amusement taxes. Nolan into the steroid out of -- I'm at Providence took a -- audience. I felt like it -- good -- I didn't get the bats. In on and you almost let the guys that I don't think you'd want to make a change.
