An embarrassing and say you know I was there at which you written about. That. Like I checked out. But there's little embarrassing -- to what I want somebody then and -- got a sub and let it come extra person -- You know I hung in there watching me go right at 2 o'clock in the you have to -- good young players bring into the right relief pitchers who. You don't know in putting hit and run and it's necessary. Good it's after the game in the food -- like. How did someone. And in real life. So yeah. The AT&T hotline are friend for ESPN's Carl -- Carl gonna good morning how aria. I'm doing great on our best -- you -- yet has been too long as a matter of fact as you as you can imagine it's all Bobby all the time up here and I'm wondering as you're watching your friend and former colleague Bobby Valentine -- his season's first unravel and apparently now himself unraveling what do you think about this up memorable for all the wrong reasons 100 baseball season at Fenway Park. From my perspective. It will -- cities you're observation of what you were watching. Well I think it's been very frustrating and disappointing and in a lot of ways -- upsetting. In. I think there's been some positives to come out of it I think that the ownership moving some players. Suggest that from their perspective they were the ones that hire the manager. And maybe they understand what the manager has been dealing -- with what it is keen with his depth with his injuries. And that a lot of times I think in sports players believe that they run a clubhouse and in fact it's the owners you do it may be that was his statement. Either in support of or it or against the players so I think there's some positives to come out of what has been. Obviously a terrible twos in the win loss -- I had been in the World Series as I thought their front line talent and pitching was as good as anyone in baseball and I was proven terribly wrong it. And we you know what well it is stunning to see what's happened while ago that we talked to UN and we just -- lupica on we talked a lot of people. Last winter and you guys convinced us and we were all. On board that Bobby Valentine was that the the right guy to cure what -- this team. And it's just been the opposite Manny is not that control. Of the situation whether -- with the media in the club house being decisions. It's been surprising how. Overmatched overwhelmed he's appeared who is he not the guy that you thought he was going to be as a manager. Well I can't speak for what he's done inside that club and I don't know that anybody truly can. The guy that I thought was getting the job I think is still there. I think that the difference I spoke last winter about how we all believe that he's changed a little bit and that and when I say that you know we all -- Bobby is kind of the very very fiery outgoing will speak his mind not afraid to offend anybody. I think for some reason and he had he had tried a little different approach to that and in order for that different approach to work I think he would need to have the respect of his players. Inept our post and perhaps. And again I don't want to speak orbit perhaps he felt this was the way to earn it was to not necessarily go when there and try to change a culture which obviously. -- begin to failed disasters last September. I know John -- set on the set the other night. And after Bobby has had that outburst. That was at least some of that -- been bigger that we all work in this game. So whether that would've worked in the beginning of the season. I don't know I do you think that he's still. More than capable manager I think that this began and where and players came out of spring training part I don't think that he ever had a team and I remember I. I believe what you guys at the midway point. He was in my opinion in contention for manager of the year given the way that he would juggle those those players and pitchers around yet that a closer all year. Beckett was doing what what we all believe Josh could and maybe Josh is capable of doing what -- -- -- if you. That. That perhaps that style which he thought they worked a little better. Didn't -- -- work but I think it's such a two way street in order for. A manager whether the Bill Belichick after Doc Rivers who have very different styles and -- and -- order prevents you. Have the respect of the players before they even began there's going to be some level of respect that ownership wired the guy and I'm not sure that every. Well there were reports even before pitchers and catchers reported in February Carl that the players were rolling their eyes about the hire to begin with and we thought body and get him -- under. And that I understand. That you brought that to me that and not gone. Ownership recovery from ESPN there's its management or ownership decided to add somebody in a position of authority well we had employees have got to at least give the -- the benefit of the doubt and if I have an idea what they're doing. Look at how successful the companies and look at how successful the Red Sox in the -- they made good decisions. This one was perceived to be terrible and some people beat before they even had a chance and I never I couldn't understand. Well that was that was that was my point it was almost as if on a number of different levels -- he wasn't given a fighting chance to wasn't allowed to pick a -- coaches. Up management I think by on a couple of reports. Told him to calm down his his his -- when he's instructing correcting players Dustin Pedroia says we don't do things like that around here it's almost as if he'd never even got out of the starting block. It seems that way. Again and not being in that clubhouse that certainly from the reports it seems that way he'd never I'll -- honestly never I have spoken to him he never has said. That I didn't have to respect that -- players. I believe he thought that the relationship with certain players was much better than being reported or perceived -- being out there if if he's. I'm not lost on that that may be the case I know he never felt. As if he was being disrespect it inside that clubhouse but it -- appeared on that there was some pre judging going on before he stepped. Put into that or put on the uniform that. What do you mean when you said the ownership controls the clubhouse is that. Unusual is that one of the reasons your mind. All this thing didn't work revolving. Well I think that I think that organization that succeed sixteen from the top down if you have great ownership great leadership. That it there's a trickle down effect. And I think in many instances. I certainly wouldn't -- was there there appeared to be a harmony between the ownership that general manager and the manager at some point that relationship changed and that's when the team went out. In order for eighteen you have success that we all observed the Patriots. The Kraft ownership group. Does things their own way there fingerprinted all over the organization you trickle down to the general manager you trickle down to the coach. That's fingerprint is all over the organization and the players. Abide by that fingerprints or as we've seen the elite and some very good players at left that organization. When the Red Sox now it seems like that chain of command. Doesn't necessarily. Exist in the degree that those with the Patriots it has. But it seemed like in this case you had players judging the decision ownership made. A well before that decision had a chance to be implement -- I don't believe that a Robert Kraft or Bill Belichick act. Decided to make it -- that the players would be rolling their eyes there's a level of trust there and some reason that -- the trust. Seem to dissipate between those guys in the club house and what's going on upstairs at the executive -- Have you talked to Bobby and you think he knows what hit him as he seems. Overwhelmed stunned by the whole thing. One thing about body and all the experiences. Where he's been people he's dealt with situations he's been in weathered the a lot of baseball diamond. Or elsewhere. He he's not going to be overwhelmed fired it may seem that way but he's Smart -- guys who will look at this. As an experience in his life and if he can continue -- he believes he can make it better if it doesn't he'll go find a new challenge and open that works out. He had success in Texas yeah I think that the New York he had success in Japan. He never had success here and I don't know what does that mean he won't let what tapping in Baltimore where Buck Showalter. A successor -- number replaces him before it -- it could achieve the ultimate. He was thrown out. Hopefully he'll be able to see this one and -- Baltimore but. Is optional all to become a better manager in Baltimore that it -- -- -- -- -- -- I think he's learned some things I think -- learned some things and perhaps. His approach this year -- in right for the organization or for the players where there seems like -- change in the mix of players. Maybe it may -- they decide if there's let's let's get another shot I don't I don't think that decision's been made to be perfectly honest and I don't think he believes that decisions been made about that. A speaking of what the Orioles are doing it yet does that strike you as. Nothing short of amazing that if the Yankees free fall continues the possibility exists -- The four or five of the top payroll teams in baseball went back at the top five might not make the post season. Well I think we've all been around sports long enough to realize there's nothing hurts but that's it's amazing or shocking or something you'd say that this is impossible -- I know that in in speaking with -- That that missed that can make a lot of sense. But what you can almost see this momentum shift. Are you look at the pitching matchups that are the next three games their throw when she and there are elements under their role in Britain. I think it's huge and sabathia and Eric at the pitching match up all of a sudden which. Which you would at least in the beginning of the year perceived to be very one sided for the Yankees now all of a sudden bit. -- scales are cutting even you know Mark Reynolds is is hitting like -- Adam Jones has played well and Markakis is becoming recognized that. That it doesn't Shockey when you look at it closely but I do I do know that the guys in that Baltimore club certainly the manager. It's is surprised the way this is going he's always told us. When he was with us when he was in the other places in others in Baltimore. You know no you are and I think he's starting to recognize maybe we're a little better than we all thought we work. And let you know about your dad had a little bit of credit here they've had a couple that -- it felt. -- Carl the Red Sox bench Eric and now as hundred million plus to spend to get ready for next season do you think they'll spend it wisely Yemeni. I'd opt out they want to tell I think they will -- to -- -- first off the o.'s gone he was he was crazier spender but also there is no there are no real. You know. Carl Crawford's up in this one Josh Hamilton but there's enough red flags than that I think even the Red Sox will stay away. And that's at -- not gonna touch that Greinke is -- guy out there that will really tempt them. I think yeah I think -- that the the opportunity to spend a lot of money for a short period of time. Is the direction that most of these teams are going and I think it would look at the winter. Last winter. That the school signing was as much about competing in Los Angeles with an eye towards what the dodgers' future ownership might be and it was a different type of investment. The Red Sox have a strong footing in New England. The way that I think they're gonna go about it is look at -- 78 year contract for. Players and realize that good for three or four years in the last four years or complete disaster brain. On the system so I think that they will spend money and it. You may see an average annual value of the contract we really -- I don't think you're ever gonna see that 678 year deal him. Unless there's some nineteen year old phenom that they identified and that's not gonna happen so I think -- like yeah. Felix Hernandez hit its free agency at the age of 28 if he's still strong and healthy. He could be the guy but what what about Josh Hamilton which -- guess does he stay in Texas and those white said. God wants them to pick the most money that they can get. Ma'am what will it be New York will be a bigger market will little will -- be peace day where it's comfortable none in Texas. I think you would if if the money is what the driving forces that I think he'll go where the money years I think for our sake it appears that excess. And the comfort level and the system that they haven't -- warm. It Tibet but there's there's an ideal organization that got new ownership years ago. Between Nolan and his group Jon Daniels and now Ron Washington. All the stars are lined up there system is producing player after player. They could move Elvis Sanders. It was a very good player great player because I have a twenty year old been injured Central Park so that's just in the reproducing itself. -- been in my opinion will get. Will get a three or four year deal for an incredible amount of money but the willingness to invest and -- there's an owner. Like we solid Mike Milledge and Prince Fielder who who calls the -- as -- this ourselves. I'm willing to for a variety of reasons not just baseball related. It could get a longer term deal but I think -- shrewd owners -- shrewd GMs will make that move and that's they have their own agenda and I don't need. -- before we look to go gonna ask Carl Bobby b.'s time is almost appear when it is up. Will you take him back on baseball tonight and more important we put him on the set with Curt Schilling. I think it would be great TV to put him on the that would Curt Schilling worked so buster Olney with John Cook would concur action I think Bobby is tremendous TV in the and is very opinionated. And I would actually take him back but again I'd have to trust the management and ownership of ESPN to make that decision that they decided alt support. And you wouldn't be rolling your eyes of the a's say he's gone back right after. I wouldn't realize if he comes back -- bought them back court Dusty Baker comes back or Ozzie Guillen comes back now I -- know my just so far they haven't they haven't had too many missteps in the baseball and I. When -- -- an opening because Francona is probably gonna end up on the back in the dugout and I was not on your show but ESPN. Where he got to guess somewhere Francona surfaces. Hard to say I think you'd like to be at least we're spring training camp is in Arizona given that he lived out there now. But I don't think Kerry would be there was a lot of talk that. The Phillies were going so bad and they moved Charlie Manuel and in that back there. You know -- I I don't think -- like governors have fallen in love letter B Jon Gruden. Our Herm Edwards has fallen in love with TV I think you like it. He still has managerial years left it I -- the same spot if they in the dusty did this emulated Bobby did. It still does. And he will manage again and again I think to me. What he's looking for is a place that that spring training in Arizona. NBA team in which the ownership and general manager and the manager. All on the same page and they decide who the players are and hope that the players will respect manager. Is Carl ravaged host of ESPN's baseball tonight appreciate the time Carl could talk if you talked to other airports are ravaged with Dennis and Callahan on AT&T hotline.
