As keeping your focus off the team we're spending money elsewhere and not spending on on the Red Sox and I want to give you an opportunity to. At least respond to a point we're hearing that it's perception may not be reality but you know a lot of times perception might be more important than reality. I understand I think that 01 of all. You know we we certainly were not happy with the way last season unfolded and it wasn't you know horrible season that we can accomplish miracles that. -- getting to post these and eventually went in the World Series felt it it you know we we we needed to. Take a look at how to improve and we're doing -- and we have the second highest payroll plan you know in baseball left -- I think that it was a sense that somehow. Because. You know we we. You lost game seven yankees stadium -- out that offseason keys fold Curt Schilling. You win a World Series 2006 you missed the playoffs. You make a big splash that offseason with Daisuke Matsuzaka. You come back to the World Series is there pressure on the organization to make a big splash this offseason. Well I think there's internal pressure I mean you know what Tom. We we we are very competitive and we we we want to win as much as anybody we were not happy with the ending of this season obviously injuries played a part but. We didn't make it to our goal and so obviously we're we're hungry we're determined. -- I think that start with -- than in you know fire in very and the and will be will be stronger than us. -- was talking about this yesterday talking about younger players and increasing their value. Talking about Saltalamacchia could possibly be that the starting catcher. Feels got his own style he probably has great confidence. He's shown some of that ability with drafting and developing young players. But in this market and in this economy right now does that become a little bit difficult in this market again Tom. To be able to field a lot of those young players and not have that Big Bang that big name player that gets people excited. Buying the tickets buying all of the merchandise the marketing that goes with. I think that that we are. Going to I don't you know -- -- promise that we -- gonna sign a significant created we are going to make. Betrayed you ourselves. And you know. There are some very strong players on our on our squad who -- young I think elections strong. We've already done and interest from people who think Felix to run the Frontline pitcher where it. I think we're not betrayed him but that we have a lot of confidence in him. We we were very hungry to get Saltalamacchia. I think gonna have -- here -- Larry came on. And at the end of last year's show that. He could play that but we're not a lot of reassure everybody that there's no breach here here -- here 2011 we're committed to win. What is -- come from that'll bridges things like why. -- could -- become so prominently. I think Theo would have been the first day that he was looking at. How excited he was about the prospect. Coming up -- of them. And I think it I think that I think that he he you know made -- very very rare mistake thing. After that you know we get done Adrian Beltre we went after John Lackey we -- in the but it you know I think he'll be the first to say it if weapon is his finest. Winston Churchill moment. It's it's done she was talking last week when you guys so you picked up the option. For David Ortiz and he was talking about the owners. That being involved in it and the owners wanted. David Ortiz David finally spoke today is the first time we've heard -- or yesterday actually the first time we're heard him speak. Seemed to be a long delay from the time you picked up the option but he said he's now fine with that he had not been saying that up to that point. Why do you think he's suddenly find. Well I think first of all you know some of these conversations are private and then you mean nation in the private. We did have. And number conversations with David we told them now. Importantly it. The nobody is in more. Identified with it in the land. Pictures that David is there remarkable. Individual we needed him on the here he obviously -- no secret he wanted. An extension and we have to balance that request it. You know what what we -- in the and that while we hope that then at the end it will make -- -- field that we did have an option -- -- we want him back and hoping that. Comfortable with it and it's very important. That. I know there were only rumors -- one of the missing -- player with. -- in in Florida. Well we're already seeing some of the smaller market teams now throw money out of the table very very early in the process DC brought up an interesting point at the the start of the show that. It seems like those teams now are jumping in on the beat players. So that if the eight the the big market teams fail with the eight players they're not gonna help those beat level players. As a back up do you see a little bit different we're here in the all of the rumors out of Oakland with Beltre as I mentioned -- already. With Florida this is a different than we've seen the past. When you think that believe it is enormously competitive right now -- -- that. Commissioners spoke to us today and in the in the last six years eleven different team played in the world here. Well in -- the only in the play in the world there's quite the red. I think that there is money that you know because of revenue sharing small market teams have money then. And it makes it even more important obviously -- develop younger players and try to hold them. You know who wanted to be used to create I think what we did. I'm Lester I think in. -- he a lot of but there's money that the smaller markets defending him. In the pre market note that a. Tom we we focus on the GM's aspects of these meetings because that's where a lot of the talks begin. The foundation laid for trades later but obviously there is industry news going on as well one of the rumors -- the talk about expanding the playoff field for the next collective bargaining agreement. It is sort of give us an insight as -- -- where that might go in some of the discussions being out about that. Well I wanna get too specific about it but I'm sure you know that -- the topic of some discussion because. I think the I don't know how many teams make the playoffs in the NBA how many how many plan. Sixteen yes sixteen ET Baird a home though with with going from a and change the dynamic and if it is not in nowhere near. A -- point news they conclusion being reached but there's certainly some debate about having a couple more while part of it now being -- five in each division would play. Rounder maybe one maybe pre game -- -- -- that's. While that the first thing they came out they were talking about giving the body. To a team that -- done really well that made no sense to me -- why you shut -- -- a -- although we have Peter -- on the -- a show last night and and you know he's talking what I think you're getting to Tom is the idea that maybe there are two wild card teams that play a one or best of three -- -- very short series one. Because I think the you're giving time off. But if it's only one game. It's like these extra games that you seem almost every year right now right three of the last four years it would -- -- an extra game it would have to be able at least the best of three wouldn't it Tom I mean one game. You if you have the pitcher the game's over series is over. Well -- but it would certainly bring a lot of excitement yeah. It would create excitement I have not and have a strong point of view that -- myself because. I see them that would make it more important obviously to win your division because then you you have we -- off one day certainly a one game playoff between two wild card could be exciting you know. And of itself but its toll on these and I'm not sure I'd wanna be determined by no one game that. We -- anything can. -- in baseball and it's a pitcher's game and so if you've got the better pitcher you're more likely corner. When that game I mean the early stuff we were hearing and they were a lot of rumors but it -- talking about the possibility of cutting down the regular season is there are an owner that you know. That would recommend going from a 160 total 154 regular season games and don't lie to me place. You know weights. Take everything you've done it and opt out I don't actually went you know let I something's on the end of the you certainly don't wanna be playing at -- on November right. What are you talking about you played hockey over Fenway Park in January you to go. You know them. Talk sort of -- altered that I can't you could do that would that would be a -- I just can't see especially in this economy how you could. Look at. You know eight games and suddenly say. You know we're gonna we're gonna cut back for -- you know are -- but I like Tom saying everything's on the table because if you or a team that isn't drawing well. And now that extra playoff team brings you more excitement maybe in the end is selling more tickets and if you're in the playoff race. Then you were -- And I don't think that the yet objectives that advances. Them. But it's certainly -- it's coming interest in the top of that in in November. It's someone one question we were -- -- earlier he wants to know about the bullpen SCSI. He wants that many more laser shows and we want to Atlanta anyone softy criminals Balkans and are not. You know if you. Last year with the first view we had a meeting and we found at that. That someone that pitchers it was incredibly dangerous to be. Sitting in that bullpen when meant to people were growing I didn't realize it was that ain't gonna get the ball. Ask him to try coal mining. Whizzing by at you know ninety miles an hour at your feet and you're sitting right there. If we we would need the approval. Of the net -- -- historical. Preservation society if you. It's in this. I'm sure that our pitchers wouldn't be very happy about it and I am sure Pedroia and and and Ortiz to be thrilled about it that if if it did happen it would only be moved in if you -- Where it but he -- if you wouldn't be the seven RE feeder that they were talking about originally because the night. And it it think it's nine. It's not you know 98. Is its study on it and and the number of laws that would be it for whom ran. I think would be. Maybe like 25 moreover. 81 gains that have -- like twelve or so it's not it's not it's not gonna change. The dynamic. I don't know much about them I was thinking about twelve burn after. Week for him just him a -- against an hour's almost. Maybe Ortiz could hit of a few of those I wanna ask you one more question about the about this soccer team and and and how you Liverpool in the justice -- -- Plug it candidate I could talk Tom my email to his rebel leader not. My song is a massive livable for what he really he really it's amazing for two years now my ten year old -- nothing to do these guys -- He let's as for -- job that we saw that it's incredible and a -- -- it was -- I like soccer golf touch it likes. Ides of one another is what this was a much you know what I'm talking about with. Liverpool and I have read a little bit about this that this was 888 vintage team won the legendary teams and they've got the fallen on hard times right so you you're kind of buying something. At school -- is that safe to -- Who Cabela's well in retrospect who knows but yet we certainly we we we talk value and if that's true. And there but there that the interesting thing to me not getting into you know whether or not toros is coroner -- But there are a lot of similarities. Between Liverpool and the Red Sox are at their buddies and I haven't -- -- -- I don't what I should oldest stadium yeah. There enormous amount of similarities in terms of the passionate fan base. The -- there's nobody there's no team in baseball that is more knowledgeable. Passionate loyal fans that if they think that was hopeful. And when he got to come over them time to watch the game at anfield and field is really somewhat like Fenway Park it's historic. Talk about Fenway is a contemporary ballpark compared to that places and. -- hope that way. An aging beautiful lady. I -- this -- is open that -- -- -- result and and they're both very intimate and they vote that provide electric variances and overdoing it sometime in the the. Do you find the environment over there. To be. A little shaky when it comes to Americans and has been some history over there. It seems to me in the media stuff -- -- -- whether or not the German -- -- yeah that's just the media stuff that I've read over the airtime they don't seem to be playing kindly. Too -- To American ownership and has been so bad history as you know is that an issue for you guys. I think that the best thing that owners can do. In whether it's you know American football American baseball. Or English football is it -- provide them. Leadership and -- the focus the -- player. So we're we're we're we're you know that the reason that people -- cranky right now -- but he's not playing well. But well hopefully putting good management and -- him the players and build it could scouting system and hopefully will what happened book what happened with the. Was gonna say you could probably take some solace in the fact that there are a lot of people with -- more you guys here in the first place when you came here. -- In the book herald. It is one. I don't admit that was a pretty good we'll find out the good and benevolence. Pretty -- this is totally off the markets we have scheduled to on the BR guest ball before this happened that the Red Sox today. We're named because it sounds like we're propping them up with that -- this award but the Red Sox were named today. As the inaugural recipients. Of the commissioner's award for Philanthropic excellence. Which is created to recognize the charitable and Philanthropic efforts of a Major League club that night I will say this. That you guys have done a tremendous job not only. Setting up the Red Sox foundation which is said and done wonderful things in the community but stuck with a Jimmy Fund and I think at the time. There are a lot of people were questioning whether you guys come in here. Move your own you know charitable ventures to the top of the the list. And kind of forget about some of the traditions that we had already had here in this town and I think that was a big loss. I that we we take great pride in and what. -- connection is between what we do off the field when people in the community. I know use you know can -- he knew it and function plans that this this. -- that touched people. And when you go to Walter we did we went to Walter Reed and we -- the wave of the soldiers the veteran. Treated. The Red -- players like they they thought they were here when you see. You know some of these cancer. Survivors running around the bases when -- you're at W -- -- and you see that how meaningful it is for them if they're the touch -- plated Fenway Park. Don't we we touched hundreds of thousands of people in the community and if if the privilege to do so I'm very proud of what we do in Boston and it and it means a lot to it and I know him the last whoever. Cleveland Indians hottest team in baseball, yet remain last in attendance May 19, 2013 By AJ Kaufman 6 Comments There’s a scene in Major League where Bob Uecker, portraying the radio voice of the Indians, bemoans, “In case you haven’t noticed, and judging by the attendance you haven’t, the Indians have managed to win a few here and there, and are threatening to climb out of the cellar.” Well, that was nearly 25 years ago and fictional, but today’s reality is that Cleveland has won 17 of its last 21, and currently tops the AL Central with a mark of 25-17. No one in the majors is better than the Indians in the past month (20-7). That’s great news. The bad news, however, is the Tribe somehow remain in the MLB cellar when it comes to attendance. How can this be? The fact that I wrote on this same topic almost to the day last year – when only Tampa Bay drew fewer fans than Cleveland - may be even more troubling. Though roughly 34,000 watched a walk-off win Friday night against Seattle, perfect weather and free caps weren’t enough to draw more than 36,000 Saturday and Sunday combined. What did the Indians do in those tilts? They nabbed another walk-off win on Saturday, then the Indians crushed the great Felix Hernandez Sunday behind Justin Masterson, arguably the AL’s best pitcher right now. Fun fact: The Indians have already faced eight Cy Young Award winners in 2013: Bartolo Colon, R.A. Dickey, Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Jake Peavy, David Price, Justin Verlander and Hernandez. They have won seven out those eight matchups. Simply astounding. This offseason, the much-maligned Indians front office finally made a legitimate attempt to improve the team through free agency. I’m not talking an Ubaldo Jimenez-like trade, but rather smart acquisitions that brought veterans Mike Aviles, Michael Bourn, Jason Giambi, Scott Kazmir, Brett Myers, Mark Reynolds, Drew Stubbs and Nick Swisher to Cleveland. In addition to being a fantastic place to watch a game due to great egress and ingress, with extremely affordable tickets, the best promo lineup anywhere, Jacobs Field boasts overall, cooler, less muggy summer weather than most Midwestern locales. The team also lowered beer and hot dog prices to $4 and $3 respectively. What other professional stadium in any sport offers that? I have visited 28 of the 30 current Major League Baseball stadia, and few top The Jake when all angles are considered. I say that as a baseball fan, not an Indians fan. As for the putative “economic” angle, these are the same people who spend insane amounts of money to watch terrible football every fall and show up in decent numbers for putrid basketball in the winter. Irrespective of season length, those sports charge up to 10 times the price for a ticket, and the atmosphere isn’t half as fan-friendly as baseball. I understand fans’ lack of willingness to get on board to some degree. A decent recap of Cleveland’s decade of “rebuilding” can be read here and the team suffered a horrific collapse last August. However, in addition to all the benefits of attending games at Jacobs (now Progressive) Field, fans should also realize the team has potential and often exceeds preseason aspirations at any point without warning. Cleveland hosts the rival Detroit Tigers — heavy favorites to repeat as AL Central champs — Tuesday and Wednesday nights before hitting the road. The temperature should be pleasant at first pitch each evening so you’d expect The Jake to be full to watch the best hitter on the planet right now — but don’t count on it.
