I bet you're the big shoulder that's the phone calls and a couple of minutes at 6177790850. Heat 885250850. We have been talking a little bit about something. That apparently they wanna try out over at Lincoln Sudbury in the athletic program over the -- is referred to embarking on a brave new world. They are talking about eliminating team captains as the role is now perceived and replacing them what is termed. I shared leadership and it's gonna hit a nerve with a -- it's senator with a lot of our callers. And the athletic director of the -- been nice enough to come on here and talk a little bit about it in the name is Nancy -- Nancy thanks for calling we appreciate it.
My car and I'm really excited that a you know you're kicking up this topic because it's you know -- a lot -- and you know I'm not para in and around.
All right then why would you explain exactly what the plan is so that we make sure that we have the plane correct.
While I appreciate epic -- a lot of misperceptions. First of all.
I think the article probably.
Gave the impression that we were requiring a small teams and that's the direction -- keen and that's something up. It's simply. A model leadership. Yet something that culture who would like to explore a field that it might work.
Are are kicking it on. And it.
Something that. You know really seven races what are the primary role that plastic -- that being learned. And so.
Many teams are already -- that's not. What great six you know not much.
Are sort of sporting their way early summer doing varying sort of modeled on the scene so for example he might out.
Elected captains and then I grew up other support -- captain in sharing responsibilities. And helping let the overall. Leadership and protocols by -- So you know it it's really kind of an interesting. -- that. We take and and have a lot of folks calling and writing and.
What are concerned that hey we think that's. Is exciting and great and interests -- it's not really so much what I thank you folks.
Opera is that today it's it's really more like okay. At stake offered ample -- your sons are one of the captains -- After that great kid and you'd have very fine athlete you -- it.
You know you let -- I agree you at a point out this little leaguer.
You know the leader that's we eight you know maybe example. White working hard I'm. And yet. There's sometimes that they need to -- a little more vocal. And I know football teams. Kind of down to the last one of their captain well I think. The team in general is probably looking Gergen but it does to chip and the little -- can't help -- the leadership.
But it doesn't it's not what you guys are projecting it to me it's not like aren't -- everybody a -- and well everybody you know I just thought that can't account is not.
Always good -- advocate who we're gonna be the captain Nancy I mean is it because leadership to me. It is aren't. And how they go and earn that role in leadership because the wake happens to me of always men and in my life is that you have to -- that --
Well and you know what say you got. Ideally it would be great however it doesn't really net early playoff in nineteen because number kept opening -- are really quite frankly -- in -- cast. And -- actually it its company and say I don't wanna be captain anymore another keynote voted them out.
You know you you get youngsters who. Are put and all that.
You know maybe aren't comfortable with that maybe don't count all the skills -- have some of the skills and what's wrong -- tapping into other kids who will bring some. -- indifferent to the table that might in the end how the team reached. Reach its ultimate goal.
It's the Steve Buckley howry. Good I wanna backup to something is that a few minutes ago you said that some teams and some programs that had great success whereas others to use the -- words. Are still sorting through it. But might I suggest you being a little you -- that they are because. On the one and we've got great success on the other hand there's still sorting through it in other teams that are sorting through it not achieving great success and you just being you for mr.
Now I think what's happened is -- and again an example they might feel are seeking.
They've been working -- leadership are all you know are a number of months. And I think when they first embarked on notes. There was a little confusion and the and the kids are a little skeptical. And the coach believed we could really be a great thing for the program and some of the student.
Actually now after a first starting out.
Feeling like I'm not sure I you know I'm uncomfortable that's I'm not sure that that's really gonna park are now seeing are coming to --
Okay about it my question that's -- answered my question my question was I'm talking about the teams are still sorting through it. You give me you know success story wanna hear about where hasn't worked.
Okay let me get a well at -- say you an example where it hasn't war.
I can only give you an example are a team that chose. Vehemently not to do it.
And it was presented to our girls basketball team and probably -- some a lot of outlets are in the article. We've had rising senior. Great -- we thought it was a great opportunities for those six girls started share and that you know in the teen leadership.
And.
There was great pushed back a culture -- on. You know they like our future program and our network design -- as so what ended up happening where there was an election.
Two kids don't elect. And.
You know there was a lot of huge disappointment. And disparagement and I think. Now there's Internet took a chemist issue where it might played out differently they try to get little -- all. However. You know.
I thought but I don't want an excuse me for interrupting that isn't that wife Nancy. That's exactly what happens in life out there that there are all elections there are interviews that are done for jobs one person gets the job the other person does not get the job.
really teaching the kids.
The real meaning of life what it's like outside these windows. When was so they're saying okay they had an election and the kids didn't like the results of the election.
Okay I ideally you're saying I'm -- it doubles advocate and a the other viewpoint. In that in this world in this day and age for Arctic where.
Lacking leader across the board. -- we are an educational and.
Situation to keep our leadership of more that we can you know find that diamond in Iraq that kit it will baby elephants still.
And have the chance to make it amplified our our motto let that that chance.
You know to get out gear and use those skills. Saying it in that in the workforce.
One thing that they're really looking for in hiring like on library thing -- looking for an hiring workforce -- each individual.
Who can come to the table with the skills to market in -- leadership environment the skills to work -- collective goal you know. --
I know where I don't know what I don't know what business you're talking about. Certainly not in this business we have bosses down -- hallway they tell us what to do that's not the real world my opinion. And I'll go back I'm gonna go back to what you just at about. About leaders and that that we need more leaders and leaders -- that I agree with you. And maybe that's what you should be teaching in the school system right now how teaching the kids what they need to do so that they can become captains. So they can get elected captains as opposed to shared captains or of the -- and shipped. As you don't learn what they need to do to become the captain so maybe next year. Instead of one operative becoming kneecap that they can become a captain and they can find out what is involved in -- that position as captain.
Well you know I -- Clearly that's your -- point what I am saying is we're an educational institution. Okay so we're we're not you know our corporate America -- an educational.
To YouTube widget in which you're teaching people would go out into corporate America. That's really the deal.
And it and you know what I'd. We teach more care leadership skills that are bringing you not to believe I don't -- The original teaching them leadership skills of your handing them the captaincy.
I guess. At that as a manager --
All I brought. -- what you well I mean. You could call it a leadership council already caught captain. And counsel you can call it in something that might captains and then you know it all our assistance at help the.
What the logistics.
The captain and -- a program.
No gross and -- that's a big thing about development of excuses teaching them as a unit to vote who they want to lead them. And that's with a -- that for. -- that so that's like voting for government program and I brought the workforce I -- football and coaching and administration there's -- above us. It's -- you have the fall of the system in this system teaching these guys united individually. As a unit. -- captain to lead them teaching them responsibility. Instead of you know haven't -- hold the hands okay now -- two captains for you to make sure we don't we might think will come Malia.
Well you know what sometimes that works and sometimes it doesn't and an again and I think it's important you understand that it Lincoln Sudbury. Into doing all different things you know they're not.
This is voluntary goals for the teams and you don't have Obama how much pressure is there on me on individual coaches -- by the parents how much of this. Is the catalyst for this is the fact that you do get counts and I understand you guys are in a very tough position. And at the parent whose kid is not getting the playing time is not the captain and they're making it allowed -- noise at times how much of that. Is is the reason the juror going in this direction.
Absolutely nothing to do that.
Not. -- I didn't say that's. Our position you know what I'm saying is.
Exploring shared leadership and it's funny I actually got an email from the athletic director or college today saying it's really exciting re doing we do -- College --
Which I doubt I think I'm gonna try to follow up and find out what exactly what what is --
After the Aaron.
There's no question. That. When that election cap and take place. I do hear from Aaron when there is -- it'll. Happen. It happens every year it happens every. Now why we're doing a -- really isn't you know I mean.
Why aren't going why do.
To teach. Leadership skills and to embrace a new model would do and oftentimes. The more. -- in creating a.
A stronger team environment I would typically even like our girls are looking for example that's all they're doing -- leadership they are riding a -- that.
Things are going great. They're really having a good time the team is incredibly tight -- out there. It's great you can't stay out.
As it they played you know way to game yet. But this I'm gonna show us all we were talking with tech in some of practice.
All right so with hockey practice. It just started it properly you know but we haven't I think that I need to be -- you it's not you but this being a great success they have completed a -- Let me play it and we measure it that's strictly I we lost our odds -- I got pregnant now.
I'm not talking about wins and losses on I'm talking about competition. Which they have not faced it with winning or losing a side. I'm talking about the competition playing other high schools in -- league. I haven't done that yet in and you figured -- telling us here but the volleyball team the -- like -- team -- quote and quote taken this and run with it. When they probably want to practicing for a week. Will the spirit program.
They've been practicing the -- and it is a week you know at that things are going absolutely fine. In what can I type out the term we released next week and -- guys -- they -- now I.
I went to check in about mid way through this season and there's ski how -- article.
Just don't card just don't do it on a Monday because they could if the.
Feel. This team that bought a whole lot in -- I want I want -- right now it's gonna be one of the most successful team. Applicants that's what I -- like ultimate will -- right why can't out other way to check I mean there aren't.
We have a text. Screen in front of us and I let me read one -- Talking about you Nancy earned her job what -- the school board wanted to give everyone a crack at her job ask her please. You aren't you -- your urine your job right there was just let it.
I don't get it. Out like in earn my job a limit it some.
I operate in my job. Finish your leadership model. By an -- some days. It I'm not got a better idea I'm laden has coattails. I.
There's no -- you're the leader you're the boss. The shared group that you're talking about all the people working underneath you. In don't. Port it really does CNN and run it in private songwriter I have thought it's we have flow charts and private sector here. And I have a -- we have people above us. Now we're responsible for our shared responsibility. I understand and agree with -- well we're not the captain's.
I you know I'm --
Think what you may I worked side by side like coach and I. -- and a coach -- that -- then why did they get they get a huge late in out their programs and an -- athletic program are huge.
And I want debut I can't let beside them in developing programs we feel -- going to be great for can't.
But Nancy you make the final decision and that's how. In your your good leader. When you listen to all of the people around you and take their input because they may have a better idea than you. But but cool as the final site you do.
I know -- You. Are absolutely important. And it -- are equally as important. And ultimately the culture makes a final. Double more points that we have banking contribute in a positive way revved -- and feeling -- article quite spelling cared about me you know all.
always goes through the -- that's kind of funnels. Some of the.
The kind of struggle through your net acts -- and don't get that final through a different senior. Because they feel like a bullet that can really feel like I got a connection with Beckett. All you know wait till he'd channel that.
It's true but no way that's been successful in sports than they vote on. Helps your well you know we can only look at some other program develops at least that do the big thing is it's not mandatory and human -- choice to look at different.
Why do you believe there are currently at its. Like it's not clear on YouTube I believe how do you bring you to the table.
Do you believe that there is student athletes when that temperament only suited to lead. Does this put undue pressure on them to rise to that challenge -- maybe. I don't wanna use the tone worker bee but they may -- they just wanna do your thing and I have to assert themselves because that's as the way to wired.
Gentlemen sometimes. Following is greatly. All your -- many roles to play on eighteen.
In the only way to measure the leadership. We're gonna help youngsters develop a -- and it's gonna take a different eight.
On the football team and it's gonna take a different face on baseball team and on the girls' lacrosse team and.
And so on and so on.
And I'm telling you.
Art of saying it's not something where we're trying to give kids something for nothing.
In an alternate that's tougher on the coaches to show also another word to cut there's no pressure on a coach a coach can run out. It anyway they wanna they wanna go with the traditional captain. You don't have an issue of that.
I do not have a -- that you know and -- you know -- it -- just advance.
I am going to still ask them.
As part of their teaching and part of their curriculum. To do more with teaching leadership. I've given every head coach this year I'm giving every bit cuts this year and nice. -- on the coach. And educational. As a leader in teaching leadership.
And so part of art curriculum talents that something.
now -- and I hold -- are -- confusing me. I asked the question I said to the coaches have the ability to do it whichever way they wanna they wanna do it in the traditional manner. Can't they do that and then you just told me that it's part of the curriculum. To do it in Europe -- How so another any coach wants to have the old traditional. Method in which they have one. Captain you don't have an issue with.
I do not have an issue and are the same time I'm gonna take one cap and that's fine. Try to do more with still teaching youngsters on the team how to beat that leaders.
Are suppose that -- coach believes that the way you teach leadership. Is that you have competition during the course of the season. So that the underclassmen. Can rise up to become the captain that they believe that's the best way to create leaders do you have an issue -- that's you'll.
Like I don't have initial -- I think that's I don't believe -- I know what. I'm a competitor and next. All right I'd love to compete. I love to win. And yet I want students at a good educational environments. That means we can't have.
Nancy I believe NC society as a nation we have great challenges and economically. Competing in the global marketplace. And I believe that moving forward we need more leaders not more leadership. And where I disagree with this vehemently. Is that I believe very strongly in a meritocracy. And would like getting a meritocracy out of this with getting the sort of share of the well showed responsibility. But I wonder if there's a sharing of accountability which is the end game here. I was there I was this year accountability.
Everybody has ownership everybody's responsible. I mean. Every single member of that -- just say oh that's not my problem up now that's besides what to -- this way. I don't know they're not do -- that's why that's why -- going to be part of the solution.
But when there's accountability in his 25 to fifty. So called captains because she.
Don't want it but are wary of getting beat number -- no -- political Everett number of people that around the team usually leadership everybody home Arab leadership in --
You're thinking everyone on the team cap and that over.
number of people that you. Give these roles to everybody can then go home it's about not my problem. And I still say one of the big problems we're gonna be facing moving forward societal -- is. Accountability. People need to step forward say you know what it's my fault they'll fix.
And you know I agree that under and I think the answer.
I guess I apathy can inhibit that but we can agree Nancy thank you very much I can't -- thanks for calling in we appreciate it.
Thank our I appreciate your kick it around you don't know you don't open up your mind and frightening thought.
We have we are a market gains this year O'Neill the submarine athletic director quick take. And we'll get to answer your reaction up there on the second night I resent that wise comment buyer which one which one. What we're close minded because we disagree with this nauseous and haven't opened. While it's the same thing I think. But she's -- user preferences and trees -- front and you're on an uncomfortable position autism parent company athlete and captain Lincoln witnessing as of as -- man. August saint viewers wouldn't say keep an open mind and younger children -- school system and I don't know how uncomfortable situation but is absolutely right. By saying that that's which says I -- saying is if -- an auto outlook all you do it's it's keep -- to isolate. Keep an open mind when you're debating doesn't seem like a lovely woman -- And obviously and obviously wanted to you know she certainly didn't balk at oh wait I don't agree with at all came on an end I talked about it. What I get out of that is what is the curriculum. What is the system who wrote the book she says it's gonna you book what -- because in the morning as well what does it sound instruments credit sounds to me like. There is no set formula of this is what we're going to do and unfortunately.
While they're out the window. Doesn't work that way I I don't everybody has set formula on how companies are run -- business -- programs you know the government has drawn.
I don't agree at all with the format that she says war. I do appreciate not force in autumn if given the coach as an option in the one you pushed one right up the offense did you know out of a -- at all. I brag but I am I a this year at least of double lot work of the kids optional vote for them. -- ability to limit the the audience out -- respond to a 61777. I generally that the 888525. 0850. Detects the coming -- strong at 85850. Do you -- ATT rethink possible telephones next.
