I can't really a big show we'll get back to -- gossage just a little bit we are so happy do well once again have with a stirring the baseball season on a weekly basis. I hear the picture of one of our favorite Peter Gammons who has everybody -- has compact drill hole here doing a great job with that doesn't respond having. Three guys from Cooperstown the one guy from Watertown the other day sorry to Karen in -- you know we love yet. -- deputy Gammons backwards again here in the picture when he joins us live on the phone -- right now. Happy birthday mr. --
Opt thank you very much -- or you go to electric and our special. One underlying jokes about the Tiger Woods.
It's pitiful life soundly tonight. And I'll only right that when I get a credit forward that they actually comes out. It's an amazing story -- when you think about it all the stuff you've covered over the years and and it wouldn't happen. Forty years ago because to him he wasn't around the inquirer was was a rag and nobody you know Internet the times wouldn't pick up something you locker picked up. And it it has -- com. Bigger than what rescue disk as a caller brought this up and Dick -- brought it up before I've heard him mention it and I always felt that was the case. You know years ago. There was a different relationship and you have a terrific relationship it's very unique what you have Peter you have a terrific relationship with a lot of players within the game -- what you. Working icu around players some players you know -- that come to you like a mad that I want to Berman workers permanent players do the same day. But on the whole this not a great relationship between the athlete in the media today that you call back 2030 years ago. You walk into any boarded a city where game was going on -- that the game was being played. And you'd have the players sitting at the bar in the media right next -- it changed because the money. This changed it to run a different. Economic level -- Peter.
I want to add that I think Robert and relationship where. I I like ghost isn't a couple yeah actually that I edit it struck right. Because. I think what -- look like that. I'm shall restrict -- access is so strict. I mean there really isn't a lot time. That the media has read players' manager coaches on our chemical compounds shall -- in I understand ought. Look at these side than -- so much more over power in every war and shut -- number one Richard justice. One point Ers and Redskins. -- they frustration call up and realized. This. War time. Where players on the pre game homestand I mean -- with the rest I mean that we were so restrictive and get Eric. So a lot that players -- Bert Carter about what -- I was kidding are you in the the one time. Actually all the interviews like it was after games and so -- actually. -- What Pedro -- coming artsy. All that happened -- that you're actually call Olsen a disgrace. And I slipped -- up -- you know that the current. Editor I just. Like you actually look like are now one. And now that's that's what a lot of athletes are suspicious. And you know it's hard when you're a large cap of people in -- we've atrocity can trucks. And that's why it's so important opposite I tried or try it on the will of people but it it is very different.
Is it safe is it safe to say Peter the stuff that's popped out here in matches with tiger beat. A-Rod. Story that it was all over the New York media last year. It was stuff like the credits used to be part of the show during the breaks Dick would. Roll his eyes were we talking about some type of scandal whatever he'd -- it was up and -- the scenes stuff that happened and Arctic. Was that the real difference here. In that now there's a whole different media hold different tabloid media out in this DMZ has become an important comported I think. Two to society and and and how. The media. Deals with people. That didn't exist toward your thirtieth thirty years ago nobody is talking about one of these athletes having sixteen women in the porn star and every and everything else.
you're actually right I mean armed enemies. Well persons. I don't matter I I hope I'm not shooting the replication of these people -- I remember when not in the -- sevens. There was rated at I had no idea what Barbara. Terrible Helio records happen to be in the wrong place a long time and armed. I don't believe there was ever a ridiculous story about an accurate because what some rest. I think the most it was sort of kept out all right it happened. The time to correct was forced to mr. Palmer on Monday night. Our baseball and at a slight accent I've -- in the war against in its own. Stoic in Connecticut a mean outlook part of the notes that wasn't huge. Wasn't huge deal that he is now under. I actually think that culprits -- desperate that are there really good at what they do because people want to read. And -- go world campaign. Doesn't really good job what they do that's what. Now that's that's what people are really that's the -- out again by indicates it creates a National Guard. Put up and so I don't what. There -- A -- that I -- and -- focus all week with me here. Well amazing things about the virtues. Is these -- essentially. Spirit Europe. And the incident that is our new York and make a personality.
Single -- he's been single up to this time right -- nobody's been single.
That's like that's what it will release its major bump unflinching look at -- as well I don't like twenty years and --
Mitsubishi that that's that they -- yet. I'd laugh if you're talking about Jeter earlier in the program because people reference of all the time to take a Dutch didn't ever does any of any -- that -- people forget. George Steinbrenner got all pissed off because he was spending too much time -- nightlife if you remember reprimanded and then. The -- to cover the thing up they did that MasterCard commercial together which was pretty.
One -- there are knows how to protect -- Art -- knows what's gonna go play nobody ever knows where real. -- what work by some basic. Where cancer in this in this -- on everyone having there are so full camp. That somehow get a report that there are couple people. Shall all the time on my dad's been because some bar and take a picture of Acer Euro like archives. Are the only athletes. And to hold the world you know the -- assault on what people aren't won or.
I -- I it's true there are things you have to call my. Peter blows the last few days there's anything you came out of this series with the Red Sox yankees thinking. That you maybe you didn't recognize. It as the series started.
I picked up but the biggest thing is I asked some pretty serious concerns about Google. Getting to -- now Okajima and mom and apple well -- Well maybe this is just mechanical. Would create a corporate and maybe you'll get straightened out and -- you get thought and 95 miles an hour and all all trust factor out. Right here Ramirez had a basic retro western in an urban archer went off every single month for cheese. We have a significant embarrassment with Cal's. That is gonna get any better so I mean I think that is a concern. Obviously the whole -- so we we watch. I really can't -- like some you know to want for -- you close scoring position. And guess fastballs and trying to pull so he doesn't hit the and I don't know -- fast order or. I -- part of it is -- their insecurity so much what should be big pot calling shall are too many. I feel -- and -- is forever trying to pull -- went. It became big -- typical -- what senator that westerners and good Dresser.
might be also -- he's trying to achieve a little bit.
I think there's no question that's why it's a result breaking all wraps around but ultimately it -- any elder. I so wanna see what happens people back to taking the ball giveaway at equity first came. And he does that have lost the ball in the -- now maybe maybe he'll go back through about being. Now -- on one when are suffering are beyond basic it's very home runs. He's going to be pretty valuable because all the guys are going to be outpatient front but. That's one of those issues it is going to be very. Tricky for a return referring convert it to work -- its.
Repeated -- that leads me to my next subject you Michal Ortiz -- Ortiz continues to struggle is like three games and if he does continue to struggle home how Long Will Michael sit there and bite his --
Yet. As Portuguese struggles. Eighty guns. On -- pit bulls start. Teaching against what can picture. And -- what happens from there but I mean I don't pick polls say things. Just because there's not his style. -- the book I I understand. Frustrated people can't get. -- the same time Elkhart it will all these guys around I can keep will be agent is what I didn't think. It was a white. Considering helped out Ortiz it's too early as the thought to sitting down with -- actually record numbers against him anyway but I only error I don't want to say again. There or if he's thinks about why the ball -- once -- I mean pole breaking balls but he orchard fast also too close to a lesser Shatner I think about. Well -- that wonderful article Wednesday afternoon. When he hit a whole local -- line like seven while are about all our way toward the center bleachers that's -- remembered as David. David Ortiz and a not if you breaking ball all -- fall in the bleachers so. -- wanna see what happens in time. -- I guess you know working we're really great I don't retired realize. How much like everywhere else in -- He is I very insecure insensitive to balance -- since embarrassed and then they'll isolate. You know most guys are. All players are a member Orioles players aren't that Kirk elder girls most secure human being ever. And so Wilson's got up but it's. It's it's really accomplish really wearing on right now on ideas. IP federal -- playing on the world.
We're you know there -- a couple times what Warren Ortiz did not get hit a NASA cameras would. Which show -- on the tragedy sit on his hands and you could see the frustration on his face is he still believes like you said. He should be out there hitting the baseball.
I mean look at his numbers actor Michael -- Hillary and -- that it was obvious right. Now I don't know -- they'll put their basic but. He can't hit so I talked carried it throughout different ways to get to for people in the it has such. But there are very sensitive issue immediately with -- in and on the questions are being held on the legal way to -- additional -- and in the past that's what actual pole looking.
Doctor Peter Gammons on his fortieth birthday here in the on the news for our assets are some -- the ball -- important. Every -- Exactly so -- The fascinating obviously for the first three games was watching some of the new guys and what interest me. Was watching Curtis Granderson the guy is two home runs two well hit home runs against two very good right handed pitchers. In a very difficult left handed hitters Holbrooke ballpark we talked about Johnny Damon in his numbers at Yankee Stadium. This guy gets right handed pitching in that ballpark. Hitting a low in that lineup that's little bits repeat.
Oh yes I think granderson nick -- answered -- Question how many games Johnson blunt that's probably not. -- will help. I'd start just watching and seeing it Johnson shot that whatever -- or to let our. On base percentage there than granderson out terrible in order political pressure and -- get to that ballpark. -- bought it I think -- disturbing signs. On that. -- that graders at last September. For it or interpret them because they want him. -- But. See how that adults but those guys -- there going to be big offensive forces on matching. And it and I internals at 35. Per vehicle runs before it's over. I'm all too well report second base pretty credible a whole bunch.
The earlier in the week of the big news was back at Simon new contract we talked about the offseason about. A big we both said that it might be a little tricky because of the shoulder concerns were you surprised that they got done so quick.
Well black -- what was sort of played out for Howell it worked out about it speaks volumes about Josh Beckett and maturity. Each other I've ever being bound air that they before pitchers and catchers report which Lackey came in about 230 after. A -- And what we're waiting for now there are job Lackey got a contract chart record volumes and yet. N -- it just keeps lying about back it is never knowing never really played alcohol politic the whole contract negotiation. Intrusion if you accept your gridlock and -- now. -- a pretty good money here -- money. I have a chance to win every year John Lackey actually gives you purchased a ring then it is here. Sold widely and I don't really interesting that. They're made mention of the fact that he loves to call them as they were signing lacking feature that is a tremendous amount of respect. In the front office and I think it's you know I'm here. Who knows. Exactly what his numbers are going to be as this eight times sonic art book referring to your door Buford from from in true. -- also but. In 1990 the Marlins doctor wondered commercial operation Alice. Each -- 1989%. In 191992001. In every. Shall operation. And got clintons now assesses its shoulder stronger than it was that so.
a Hebrew got copies says. I remember. Them talking in the other room remember hearing them talk on the phone saying I needed the surgery need the operation. And that's what really drives them.
So no doubt and any garden and he's he's fortunate very close relationship with our operators and I plug holes so it isn't it doctor Rangers guys sell. It's a huge advantage -- really do have. So what catchy -- Paul Walker and -- the worst. I guess decisions made our free agents are restrictions. Because the unpredictability in and sort well I mean. Protect what they can weather situation where whoever they pick it might need in this next policies of the price isn't going to be as high as it is closely. Will likely and so. I think our our tremendous -- rest.
I'm sorry Peter you mentioned that he'll call back at them and activism. Very smart move that field did and it showed that you know it was a respect thing for Beckett and Beckett you know look at as that. But as if everybody's healthy. When Daisuke. Comes back. And I wanna be -- of one of you know forget about Daisuke but. If that was held to a Daisuke comes back who's the odd man out the starting rotation.
Figure out what reject. There aren't. Really.
At this point who would you say is the odd man out at the --
My guess is that. -- and up to mobile I'm not sure. But. I don't make that -- courses or is the water through which is 99. Quality starts got a chance to ourselves trash. Which -- great in the playoffs. So. I think that this figure out what to do. Irish during the season I'm sure there will be six man rotation. We can't actually wrestle the Beckett and Lester and Lackey -- always helping. But. I think that that's the direction -- and buckle. That's very part. In the soccer breakthrough last original -- apps. But it may be an -- only guy that can shut. But at -- based fuel but also so good there's no reason portable. Any good effort and address the situation insurance. Last year. But all the injuries to Adam and the discipline as Brad Penny John Smoltz -- so important element in 55 starts. Their starters this twenty meter runner -- that's two major 195. Games last year given. The given how many problems they have holding your rotation get.
You know it's interesting when you when you have riches like this deep rotation people always ask that question what do you do. And it always does seem to take care of itself somewhere down the senate couples or however for a couple seasons like remember that Seattle team that five start is that what the whole year at a Red Sox went. All but those two starts or whatever and another season. But -- better that. Then nothing left enough farms and you try to find anybody in July -- you got a doubleheader coming up on Saturday and another one in our next week.
For all -- I think everyone everywhere when it the last to do with all the stars and here you -- Paul -- off my high school Joe west would have been upset -- double -- that are -- millions and triggered --
Talking about Wakefield tonight I don't know if you've seen it. But during your she -- that eighteen year old female knuckleball pitcher from Japan has just signed a minor league contract. With the Chico outlaws. Of the golden baseball league here in the United States and she's reporting to spring training about that.
Rates are usually five feet tall she resentment admits iceberg she was ya been not very nice verse five feet tall. -- Yeah how active yet if it's. Good to be more concern over the wins there everybody a little quick what do you figure that -- those Joe west comments.
Well I machine behind home plate and I was moderate and cursing most of iTunes Joe -- missing something. Odd. An army chief was part of the problem where that -- to a trickle. Up how could agree with you and I outlook. -- the players of all teams talked about you know those games at the excessive report by its nature is the pressure is Steve Cassidy. On. All change our deal. Try to other starters out the sixth inning at a strategy might are ugly OK maybe they want or rumble that. Part of it you know this stresses I stepping out -- happened just students are -- right now hamburger. It is to drive up or change the white Evans and more now forever trying to upstage trojans are stepping -- get -- Articulate -- point the other night by. I don't I mean. I think somebody -- art should be able -- careful. -- players when. One. The poll of fire structure. In Major League Baseball is being called. Are being called out constantly I think they're trying what they're still I -- archery as far more power. -- of course Joe west and a part in an airport he got the opening night. I'll play.
I also thought he was. At that language by him was a little bit strong welcome to Bob -- coming from an -- about a little dessert you know what Peter. And I was happy. Three games not a single one of whom -- four hours and the last one went ten innings and only three to 41 for Red Sox yankees say those a brief encounters.
They are specialist is all prepared for tightens up that we're all it there were all very. Very skiing so and I. I -- we can talk routes are so we can talk to the artificial stricter I don't -- should show our I don't picked out Joe west place. Require a classic players Arctic now. What if -- didn't offer any solutions. So there he goes -- solutions. Just. Totally aware -- what basketball or somewhere it of the plate faster. Now what can interrupt -- global. Ari is their fire -- long and there are one more inning Grand Slam. -- or our -- it's a home run -- whatever you know it's. People want memorable games not just games are played. 51 game plated. It and our partners is an earlier on the passing game watches -- saint shouldn't.
Well look at -- summer remember old memorable games and we're looking forward to talk and you every week about to single out there celebrate your birthday ever -- and then we'll talk to you later bye penny however the cellular Peter Gammons the birthday boy right here on the big show.
