In each one of the positions there. For the for the crap does that make it a little bit more difficult than that you're not bringing in these huge names obviously any -- to two years. Does that make it a little bit tougher. From a marketing standpoint but it seems to have been a successful system that -- employs here as evidenced by the team of the decade. Well.

sure what we're in the business of quality depth management you know when I first. Bought the team. Generally. Ninety's. -- we will sign a lot of stars and we plan. Which is so dominant players of the world in the top 34 positions. Him in and their positions in the week. And you know this is a business were super physical sport if you lose someone injury. You have to have them. And if you don't have you have a real problem and we learned earlier. How important the bottom for of the roster was. And I know it's like -- stock portfolio patrol is trying to improve. And move the pieces. Actually when we start to develop the team and we have a pretty good system. Now week after. Which. We -- and where started a seventeen season. Since her family bought the team and it's. Flown by. -- we sort of look at the light. Pieces of the puzzle word. Developing and putting together and every year's different you know. You mentioned some -- players that we didn't I can understand the answer. A talk radio experts. Creates. Issues but in the end. Where -- is comparing the players that we haven't what the status of their contracts. With what the marketplaces. Because everything analyzed. She goes what's the deal to. How to -- And this year weak field that the players we've reached that some bulletins will work. We don't think -- reported in the marketplace this team for it's not just on the field it's the practice it's. It's the chemistry in the locker room and you guys know. How many games lost in the -- room you got a few bad apples who lead people along the wrong way. So we have to put all that together and we've been able aside in the number of our guys this year that we felt were number one or two in the marketplace. We had a -- on someone else and bring someone else. In here we wouldn't have the same knowledge. To does that upset you when people call -- yours with -- system you feel. As work we effectively over the decades and that's out there. Patriots at some even for. Well. The way look. What are we -- them that we were fans and listeners. And we're we look forward -- this team and trying to created something special. So we've had sixteen years we've moment then. There is no team has won more football games the last sixty years -- in England patriots. We've gone to six championship games which ones are. Gone five Super Bowls we've won story. So. You know people might find fault with the way we do something but what -- about execution not -- such practices. Lots of people. That can talk a lot but in the you judges by results of the last sixteen years and reflectors 32 teams I'm pretty proud the we have the best won -- record in the period. We don't do things. Always do the right thing. But this is a dynamic business that we have to be flexible go with the flow and I think that's sixteen erected. Is pretty. Pretty cool. From. -- people if people wanna say they were -- I don't know what that means. I understand certain players warm and positioned themselves. Maybe tell marketplace. I think I'm gonna be available. That that's okay. But in the -- We're concerned about how many football games we win at the end of the year headlines. Discussion now. That's all parts of the proposal will be you know but in the yen. What happens in December January and real -- there's two -- almost two year what do you think humor comes these conference issues. We have to win now and how much of issues we've got to plan for the future. Its use Steve. That's the balance. That always doing. I know this is a marvelous to -- because of artists that we we've won we have the best routes one las right in the last sixty years. But I don't think anyone who has the consistency. I mean I mean. You look at the last two years. We missed making the playoffs. We were dependent on other teams were very close to where it and the of the teams. Winning their games do it but. We've been pretty consistent. -- Throughout and I think that's a real management struggles. In this league going to be good year and Euro and that's what we wanna do. So we're we're never gonna -- solo for one season so this is the year. We will have a chance to make in the playoffs and doing well Europe and Europe.

We are competitive guy sort the end of the season go to an Anglican ever anticipated. How tempting is it to just. You're one of affairs that we need to receive what we need that defensive back you know inflict some teams become fans and all the paper guys that screws up the whole system -- to if you go to.

Well I am very competitive than it I tell you that after the Baltimore game. It was a very depressant can never remember games starting out like -- polling -- and those. Tommy gets strips. You know just things unravel I don't ever remember. Having the feeling like that and believe me we don't -- see you repeated. And we're trying to do the things that put us in the position. Not to have that happen in this upcoming here -- in the M. This is such a dynamic business and things change and teams change and you always have to be on your toes and try to stay a couple steps ahead. We're doing things at this point in time that. I'm excited that we have a lot of opportunities to improve our team. The draft this year is as deep draft. We have four critics I think it's 32 -- the first fifty people 54 picks. We -- for projects which I believe is more. Than any other to him and I'm hoping that those four people can you know being an hour 45 man roster analysts. 10% in your team. -- an upgrade and hopefully in that area.

It's amazing talked about sixteen years if on this is almost seems like it was yesterday and remember having an interview with you. Right after he was taken over the team and you've used the San Francisco 49ers as the model remember you saying that. I -- be like 49ers I want to be competitive every single yeah me we will have a chance to win a few championships but every single year isn't it funny that 49ers -- huge -- And this is ultimately the model franchise now over good deal the sixteen years. How was it changed and how is -- changing right now. In the recession you've built what was an old. I won't say it -- whatever over next door you built this beautiful new. Facility here you built stuff around it it's totally different. From the old days you had it -- you may still have 50000. Only on the waiting list. But we'll go to a recession right now. Your business is everybody's business is getting hit by all this stuff. How different is it today and how do you anticipate what it's gonna be like here in the next few years.

some very good question you know. And Comerica. Is changing three put the western world economically is changing. I think I would encourage. Are people who were running this country state and federally that the most important thing we can do was create jobs. That we can afford a country. That has permanent 10% unemployment. We have to make sure small medium size companies. Can give loans cause they're the ones we're gonna hire people on the entrepreneurial. Now without as a backdrop. We take for it and Steve. Who played on this team they remember when -- Eagles stadium given their cars and drive over. To the hospital. Grounds in blood pop Warner play and that's there was over -- to have the bottom remove all -- And you know I remember coming when I was looking in the buying into human being and -- says this is the most well team. Matters you know it's like pop Warner whose strings are and and you know you remember -- on the racetrack material and so. Family is very probably come down here that we've been able to. Develop and build a stadium. It's the only one willow. And the public money that we can use PS cells. And it's really because of the very fan base we have here and -- no crew was to. Over 60000 people on the waiting list. And we have to be very careful well. We're continuously meeting the demands of the experience. And then there were putting a quality product and it someplace that they can feel comfortable coming here and make it a full day. Of entertainment and that's been and I stress that people aren't just coming here watching him it's there it's camaraderie. We have 20000 parking spaces we -- patriot place. To help supported. Those who haven't been to the hall and hopefully get there him. And see that but this is this is our dream. Of an experience that we as limbs. Dreamt about having and trying to make this place special now the economy has complicated things. And so I think every business has to make sure that they're delivering. -- quality product. And people in this environment. I think there's a flight to quality. -- an action you can see the ratings. The NFL ratings across the country. On the highest ratings in over twenty years. I think people are staying at home more I think. Where the only mass audience to UV product the end of -- we have to be careful about the -- of the puck out of this is not a problem -- and --

More people staying home technology has improved. Games are high definition soon to be in 3-D. And you've got to fill a stadium out here you've get your club seats switcher. In this economy is that not make it more difficult because the football world is expanding because more people are into it but you're watching it and woman and they name not necessarily show up.

Well we're trying add new features and do things you know and and and four and Steve can speak to it that there's a certain sense of camaraderie. Of being with the people in the stands that you did -- Making it comfortable. Tailgating. Spending the time here and and have -- be more than just again. But we have some plans for amenities in the stadium. That I think we'll continue to improve your. You know it's the same issue if you think about movie theaters. I don't know if you had the chance to go to the showcase of military and go to those locks theaters that's -- to -- the server your -- get comfortable seats and you know you see what a special. Places but more people are going to movies in America today. Than ever did so there's something about a communal experience. If you're giving it. Inequality come away and you know our film is gonna continue to destroy them and push that and you know if we're winning -- makes a lot more fun to come because we all know -- always felt after the Baltimore we don't like -- feeling. We're gonna. I actually think since we've opened July. I think we might have the best won loss record in the stadium and a lot of that is the fan support and what they do.

Which also symptom you're making experts doubt that -- all -- the Internet and via war veterans. Exhibition -- and -- advocates can come out and in going to stated when I've played. That is a complete mystery I don't know where pops up it pops up a lot of that we shouldn't pop up so.

People have written written and senate before that this -- you know via. Which I mean it's like anything else there are other owners in the National Football League that -- other outside business you've got fox company paper companies -- much of other stuff. And they're all facing whatever everybody else is facing here in recessionary times but I would think the football entity would be totally separate from home. Well for.

All over the years of paper in movies are. And and those you know those -- the by the way patient places doing far and so not. Sure you know I don't think retail is booming and we're both the restaurants and the bass pro -- and only other places that are you know in this environment and doing pretty well so. I can't speak to that I know. The business that must and then in the room -- internationalists pretty strong. And knock on wood we once again we gotta get our government people here. To make sure that small medium size companies are getting loans. And that the focus is creating jobs and we create jobs and grow the part of this country. You can do all the other things you wanna do.

With the principal owner can field the New England Patriots. This labor situation how much you can really get into this whole. Labor situation but how difficult how different. Is it to operate in an uncapped year did you go through this and can't try to figure around. Navigate your way through this and say okay how we operate now with the possibility and now it's reality. That we got an uncapped year this year. And possibly. A lockout no football 2000. That plane you.

Business like there's so few folks before this is a dynamic prisons. You have to plan for all kinds of contingencies. You. You have to think ahead as much as you can. But in every dynamic global situation. There's inefficiencies. And appears market. You can take advantage. Of those situations in the marketplace. You gotta stay cool you you know and I don't -- criticize and your mind. Folder -- speak about how they manage their operations but I think this kind of environment. Creates opportunities. If you cool. And and you take everything in and strike at the right time. I think that's what we see. As far as the potential. Of next year I can just tell you. The undoing everything. I can in my pro am on they're commission has put me on the CC which is the committee. Negotiates. Her new labor deal authors want them I remember 82 and 87. You know it's a horrible time. And I must say it. Our friends and I think fans throughout the country the last in the wanna hear is squabbles between well to do players well to do owners. And I can just tell you I'm gonna do everything in my -- trying to. Build bridges and you get to former players and and I just say this. With -- all due respect to all the great lawyers so there. You can men were -- lawyers run your business or rather a negotiation without the businesspeople. Stepping him because you know sometimes. Floors collect bigger fees when this litigation. If if you're an and I am not saying that's the case I think. I just think that the top people on both sides got to always. Lawyers are trying to protect you and make sure your covering all the pieces. But in the on the business people have to step in the at a critical time and make a deal so I think that's the art -- whatever we have to do here. And them. We get something great going. The American now our fans are really -- and I think responsible people on both sides.

There's no reason that we shouldn't be able labor deal in place. Before Leo just days ago I totally agree with you with -- because of that so the public's going to view. They're gonna look at it while the sport players were making all this money and look at how much money the orders remain over the years and -- Municipalities. Have given them money to build these big huge stated kidnapped like -- when you didn't get that. But a lot of them did and a lot of them are hoping that the going to get it in the in the future he would on the road this may be very difficult for them. But how do you avoid that the fans are not going to be -- this and yet the owners are pleading that. They need to find ways of being able to get more money in the pot to invest in the future. And the players to sit there saying we like the way it is right now we wanna keep the ways how do you avoid. The well not --

Set of notes a good question. And by the way. The fans should not be part of this and we should be smart enough for both sides -- about the facts. We made a bad deal you know cynics who care. It was a four year deal with a two year option we have the right to opt out who who is we just do the best deal and in life. Yeah I'm sure many years listeners. -- small business people or larger business people in the end. You can build relationships. Or do business without doing a deal. That's good for both sides and mormons to one side. In the it's gonna cause problems and right now the ownership made it deal. And it's we got to fix it so that in the look the pitchers are going to be far from Ottawa opens because. I think the most important thing is we maintain a system with competitive balance. But the Super Bowl this year. Indianapolis. The cool ones too small market. Highest rated program in the history of TV. We no longer have to say after that -- this guys like ours who bubbles we now have the highest rated for twos look forward to -- But you'll loans what a -- the pitchers couldn't win. You know. Not that I could probably have a roof and the and the house but. You know it was great story for America and the power of the NFL and bring it. Community gathered down there and loans. But in the end. We we we we have to do what we gotta do to pull list ago.

And I hope we don't -- and I promise you I'm gonna work very hard to do everything I can do to make sure it doesn't happen. General and Brigham and I know them well look at well though -- just celebrated her second birthday on February 20 and children's them. -- Gottlieb and the whole partners system does a great job -- great. Facility down here. That's something that's building them. And doing very well. I'll tell we're lucky we all collected via a lucky to live in the region and an area. We'll get the kind of medical care. That we all have access to you know just another reason that. We need good New England pitchers they insist they Gooden helped them. Using partners the Bill -- godly animals people they were great and terrific great mystery to me. Terrific to me. When when you talk about the soul. Labor situation. How difficult is it win you have to groups that are so entrenched right now you just said it was a bad deal. Players association. Obviously doesn't wanna go back so how do you without constant lawyer.

But let me just talk to that. Thing. Look at just and since we bought the team. And that the salary cap was like food enforcement now with fringe benefits it's 150. -- sixty news. Income has gone -- 500%. I don't know how many of your listeners sources analysts someone's. Shareholder in Google sharply. That their income has their salaries have gone up 500%. In the last sixteen years. I think the players. Really understand delegates aren't good we gotta keep it going we got to figure out how to keep growing it together. Right now it's out of whack with we have teams. You know. We might -- Tuesday. Consider this carrying another category that won't go out and take risks to grow revenue because the margins are too small in this system. So why go out and do things where you're just gonna lose money or trade dollars it. And it's complicated to explain this situation by. It's in the best interest of everyone. -- ownership goes out takes financial risk to grow revenue. And it shared appropriately. And right now. We we you know we've made a mistake people make errors people make mistakes the deal doesn't work. For both sides and that's what I am talking about is having a deal where we'll have -- balance. Long term the pitches -- going to be fine no matter what happens we're in a big market. But I don't think it's good for the sport long term not to maintain the special -- so.

Unifil -- a couple of decades dealing with Gene Upshaw will be felt PH do Marie Smith the new executive director of the of the association. How's it working with with the performers console for.

I think he's working well you know he comes once again. I hope in the and he's a businessman you know he -- his background his. He's a brilliant speaker and very capable book is a litigator and a lawyer. And always in an environment where is going to be a businessman has got a lot of lawyers you go we're negotiating table. And I think. It's like -- lawyers and I'm looking for the finance people you know -- them they have a lot of older players there. But I think he's a smart man and I hope in the you know this is about to. Life at this point about doing deals on the -- both sides on the stand in one another and then conclusion. A deal when you got some good Gomes.

But here's the problem also. You have risk to make money they're gonna make a profit because of -- is really physical risks but they don't have financial risk. You have a financial risk which -- the turn a profit or of the invest in the future I don't know if they understand that concept -- best in the future and you go.

You know I just to make a profit and it's this is to pay -- the right that's the take that risk but. But we have something so good that we can work together. To do it it shifts. Both sides -- being able to moderate. Well you know first of all you gotta understand the problem. -- You know as long as you understand that then you can solve it right now I don't think it's fully. Understood and that's what I committees and try and work together -- slides. But in the end it's about people on the business people doing a business deal.

What what's at the restrain him. Enough for a show -- to play and understood the complexity of the game and this guy is more Washington insider type litigate a clean hands as. Find a big difference negotiate with the true.

Well Gene -- was an offensive. Lineman. And that's human rights movement and I thought -- close and I want to do both look what's happened although us for a guy who wasn't smart -- pretty good. Guys like you how what's the sense that team it's not a sport where one of two guys make that difference you're neither team. I think of that 01 team. When we wanna for Super Bowl was you know a bunch of guys who came together. There were no fancy stars they pulled it together and it was just a great inspiration. And that's what -- well some of the core.

And bring the sides together because I believe the problems are solvable. And and we have a great it's not like. We're gonna dying industry -- in -- ministry. Where people want to see your product where people wanna. Be part of it and and and we can't forget that. And we -- abuse. And.

That's sort of what's out of opus but life is unfortunately we all have problems and come up and the -- deal with them. The other put it on the table and you gotta make it happen. And and somehow I feel the with all due respect for the posturing. The -- side as long as business people. Look at that the facts will make good decisions and would give a resolution to this I get a picture that was sent down here a couple of hours ago. Vince signing his new deal. He he media as a lot of compliments and his wife and I like to see big strong guys who feel vulnerable. And trust. Women partners for it -- you gotta you gotta you gotta pick the right one that's the -- But its interest to -- you guys dynamic of the two of them. And they worked together as a team well but we're so -- evidence as part of this human. It is going to be here at least for eleven years now and he has great respect from the locker room.
