So lot of Comcast last night -- do the show and in the car and I'm driving home. At about 1040 years on my cell phone rings. And it Mike Milbury. And and Mike says you know I I have never done this before. But I'd like come on your showed more. And I as I have told them on the air and I told about the -- that you're always welcome on the show we looked -- to have you on we'd love to talk Tia and Michael join us -- today. He is. Agitated is too weak a word he's extremely agitated. I'll buy out the situation in Pittsburgh and I'm gonna let him tell you why well that's yeah at 1102. He'll tell you why he's extremely agitated. But it's it's one of the few times I can remember what her I -- like Mike has set I really wanna talk about what's going on in this situation. All right Bob Murray -- he called and and and -- called in from his honeymoon once but that was another topic for another day. Could be called it from Hawaii and it's funny won't think about that from media. Now. It's just a little strange. -- That the situation that happened Sunday at the game in in Pittsburgh. Has been the topic of discussion. All around the national hockey. I'm I'm looking at TS sends website up in Canada. And the headline is NHL players and GM's. Weighed in on renewed head shot debate. And and opening line says on Sunday penguins forward Matt Cooke delivered a blind side hit on Bruins forward Marc Savard. And big want to to quote NHL players Mike Fisher of the Ottawa Senators said I don't think it was a clean -- that's for sure. He probably wasn't trying to hurt him but -- got let up in those situations. Maple Leafs defenseman Dion for new echoing the sentiment it's clear that he Winfrey's head. There's no room for that in the games set for enough. And and there there are some question marks probably. On unfortunately exacerbated by the fact that Colin Campbell the league's disciplinarian. Apparently did a radio interview in Toronto yesterday where. He suggested that this may not be an illegal hit in Colin Campbell's mind. That he didn't see an elbow there like ideas. And and that. Believe it or not in the NHL. Shoulder to head hits are allowed now there's a separate question here. Are about shoulder to head hits from the blind side on a defenseless person what are the chances cook is playing against the Bruins. At the garden better than I would've thought yesterday. You ask me that yesterday nice and I don't think you'll be playing on the eighteenth. Based on some of the things I've heard N and red cents yesterday I would say the chances are better than I would have expected that America suspend. I have a feeling he's gonna get suspended for two games he may not -- knowing I you're right he may --
saying if if Campbell is talking like this if he's saying. It's borderline it's questionable have a software in the second go way in in a minute. More accurately. If he's saying is borderline in you know it's a judgment call it and you know there aren't -- your shoulder do this was he doing there was this is intent on and on. If you're having these types of these types of conversations in these types of debates publicly. I think of the cynical side of me thinks. That you're setting yourself up you're protecting yourself. When you announced that there will be no penalties. And that the officials made the right call by not making a call at all.
Well it's an interesting dilemma here and and I guess the question first for the officials of the game officials on ice officials is what would you call. Now they claim there wasn't an elbow. So he can't call elbow. Is it roughing. I don't think so what what you call it. If you're gonna call a penalty on the ice wasn't -- it wasn't charging. What well maybe it was charge that matter what you call it every. -- but -- I think that's the dilemma the NHL.
Spacing yeah sometimes sometimes they they. If if that's true I don't know if if that's you speculating or if if the NHL really feels that way that they feel that way. That is crazy at open season on people land that is just -- is just crazy because now you're saying. -- Hey boss could call the penalty haven't learned a little -- Call it something and it doesn't have to be perfect set that was wrong. That was that was that was something that we won't we don't like on the ice -- collar and elbow to the head wasn't quite an album to the head. But it caller roughing and it wasn't quite quite -- you'll understand what enemy. It was trouble there was a problem.
We've got what that -- problem I and I guess. It's two minutes for problem. Calling Campbell as we said did an interview with a radio station in Toronto we get to cuts I don't even know what's on them I don't even know what order they're in but here's the first of mark cuts with Colin Campbell.
We're not talking about the but we're talking about. Shoulder. -- And legal hit by definition the rule -- it causes a concussion. That's that's our issues which would mean that's the boot Richards that's. Cookie unit there aren't Savard.
You think that -- the cookie it was a shoulder and not even have his arm up you know at all. Well just watch the video and watch it again I -- it we just why aren't happy about any of -- while.
That's our blue ball you know what he's preparing you for now I think think back now. -- Scott Walker sucker punches Aaron Ward in the face. In front of gotten everybody in the Stanley Cup Playoffs last year. And remember Bruins nation all Colin Campbell's gonna come down like a ton of bricks on this guy. -- now open. Randy Jones. Ends a season for Patrice Bergeron. And the season. Alan Campbell law he's got to do something here against Randy Gjelten no. Nothing we sets a pattern here. You've seen it ten times it's all right it's on the Della and -- page and WEEI dot com you guys look at it again about that he said. Eight of us watched -- or an hour and a half was there any disagreement. And if it was if it's clear. That it wasn't wasn't an illegal hit. Why were eight of you watching it for so long.
Actor for I assume because they were trying to determine. What the penalty would be now you heard the first cut from Colin Campbell here's the second go back to move the -- in some parts of -- at -- It under the leader of the rules as they are written now and under review. That's a legal hit somebody -- sign.
It ought not actually I'm not I don't you want cock would be okay we haven't we haven't completed that when it so I don't okay pocketbook things --
But it sister but news in just bring your. From what you've seen it is a shoulder. And stroller.
But don't be a look at other aspect to that yet so okay this is that they're more sure there yet.
No. Didn't -- just talked about doing that well not on on and autos and gamble. Yes glad you watched it for our. And you thought aren't going yet. And the follow question are you -- that the legal it on and on -- and now. We have made a decision. At a all know why don't I don't getting conversation with a guy.
It now there's a there's a cynic in me there's a cynic in in an ever wants and I'll let -- just comes creeping out. Colin Campbell son plays in the national hockey. As for the Florida Panthers. If the exact same situation happened and Greg Campbell was Marc Savard. And Matt Cooke was Matt -- Would Colin Campbell think that that play was okay --
It probably have to Adam. Recuse himself why don't I I know he would never -- I understand what he would what -- what do you think earlier in the looked -- of course now.
But but but that's yet but that's any parent dale bombing in if your kid is involved you look at things differently I -- now. It's. Yeah I mean most people here listen to -- root for the Bruins so they are they're partial to the Bruins. But there -- people around the National Hockey League who have. Who have have no attachment to the Bruins have no attachment to the penguins in media confident doesn't have any attachment to the Bruins are paying once any looks at and he says. That's dirty there's no place for that. But if -- somebody he knows. It big goes up another notch from and so I can understand that if there's somebody close -- you you don't look at it completely if.
Now there is a penalty in the NHL for intent to injure. Now I said if if the if the officials on the ice did not what Paula that wouldn't that be intent to injure -- I mean is there any way you could look at the Matt Cooke hit against so -- let's say you didn't think there was an -- let's say you think. That shoulder to head contact at least until the general managers change things up here. Is is legal under the definitions and terms of the national hockey late arisen intent to injure penalty in the NHL. Is there much doubt in anybody's mind and I have a feeling that's what in the second cut -- heard from Colin Campbell. I have a feeling that's where his little delays here you know his little his little out here is well. Technically you can have shouldered head contact in the NHL technically with in the rules but there was an intent injury on this play. And and I have a feeling that's what they're gonna fall back on now again this same player has has been suspended on two occasions. For the same sort of thing I got it against the Rangers. I can't pronounce the name of the Russian player I can't remember now -- week we hit. You think it was the exact see us play at the two -- you know that's.
Sorry if Colin Campbell's really think about it that's -- got to suspend the guy for at least one game at least one game because you don't give a guy. Well like cook who has had issues before you don't give him the benefit of the doubt. He hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt maybe if there's somebody else. Who hasn't been in the principal's office in the last two of the three years multiple times maybe somebody like that. You say. It's just it's just a good clean hockey play and it's unfortunate that. He was compressed but we know what wasn't intentional.
I mean you go back -- the Dennis Seidenberg hit on Patrice Bergeron it's senator rice which caused Bergeron second concussion. Nobody thought that was an illegal. Not Bergeron not the Bruins. It was a solid mid ice collision between two men going for the -- and Bergeron Qian. Hit Seidenberg shoulder -- Now there was shoulder to head contact that I wouldn't make an argument was illegal nobody would. That wasn't the same players desk where -- hit a guy from behind. Defenseless because he'd just taken a shot was in his follow through from a shot didn't even seek -- And cook hit him in the head with a shall. To me there's an intent to injure there which are summaries in the National Hockey League seems hesitant to. To put more more specifically into the rules and regulations but they have to. They have to be more specific. -- they're gonna get more cases like this in the gonna have more guys missed 3040506070. Games because of severe concussions. Ironically 24 hours after this hit happened the general managers in the NHL were meeting in Florida discussing what. And cautions and hits to the hat. The timing both couldn't be better and it couldn't be worse.
