There's say ask statistics based web site called fan grafts. One of the things that fan graphs does is they they come up with the valuable player it is -- and fact that. Theo Epstein was using when he suggested to John and Jerry on this radio station that J. D. Drew was living up to his contract. -- he was being paid fourteen million dollars according to fan graphs he was worth fourteen point two million dollars or whatever the number was. And -- was using that is as verification. That you know J. D. Drew was worth the money that he's being pay. And graphs has given us what the relative value as of of Joe Mauer. The catcher for the Minnesota Twins who was the near unanimous choices MVP yesterday. How you pick Miguel Cabrera first and our second which one Balladur did as a little -- getting. With a guy from Seattle based in Seattle he works for a Japanese news service. I'd -- no explanation he picked Cabrera first and our second on his ballot that's the only first place -- mauer didn't yet. And I don't really care.
Army won a landslide and think about that is just too bad and I know it doesn't matter. And we we went through the same thing last year. Were talking about a Dustin Pedroia absolutely Evan grant of the Dallas morning news. And the guy in Pedroia won the MVP so you'd could say what's the big deal I just. I just hate when people go that far and they they go out of their way to say. To be -- to say you know I got something different. You know sometimes there's no need. For something -- sometimes the obvious is right sometime yet you know that there there there's a reason. A lot of people liked Frank Sinatra OK there's a reason. A lot of people like. You know summer days when -- you know 82 and everybody is -- at everything that it's a cloudless sky there's a reason -- before out there on the beach in eating ice cream because it's cool it's good dad says it's so dumb power. What should have been a unanimous choice for him VP there was nobody. On his left.
this year and there is nobody on his level now here's a couple of numbers. To give you about -- my hour according to -- graphs. His value last year was just north of 36 million dollars the crazy. That's an alias I mean where we are talking monopoly money here but but according to bank -- thirty million. A little north of 3636. Millar to third on -- forty. Joe Mauer is. 26 years. He will be 27 years old assuming he doesn't re sign with the Minnesota Twins. He will be 27 years old and an unrestricted free agent a year from now. Coincidentally that will work out perfectly. For the bidding war of all bidding wars between the two richest franchises in the American League. Who will both desperately -- franchise connector at the exact same time. The New York Yankees will be looking to replace Jorge Posada and we'll have money to spend the Boston Red Sox. Willie there have re signed. Victor Martinez and even if they did they'd probably consider moving into a different position but they also will be interest in the acquiring guy like Joe -- You know -- hours gonna get a he's gonna get eight that twins six pretty darn right the vikings still he's -- is that you know what it's gonna get he's gonna get ten years and 300 million dollars. He's gonna be 27 years old. Think about I I think encouraged. The current highest average annual value in the American League is obviously erotic -- 26.
He's gonna get ten years and.
100 million dollar might happen and might happen for a few reasons and the -- and if you go to free agency. And you'll. But he goes to free agency I'm not sure that he walked out of the adult acute care and -- just can't let this happen they cannot happen. You know it's going to be one of those one of those boosters situations in college football on -- we need to keep on. Okay some some local business folk -- put together some money and and throw it at the twins and you say this is the Joan -- fund. He is not gonna leave Twin Cities but if he were to become a freeagent. It would coincide with. Jorge Posada probably leaving the Yankees or being or being a glorified idea DH right. We already know Jason Varitek is going to plaster -- size and Victor Martinez has played first base. Both the Yankees and Red Sox the super powers of baseball will be looking for catcher got perfect storm and and they -- one public nobody went public. You know feel would be Santa himself -- they -- on Alex Rodriguez. They got us. On Mark Teixeira. And -- against this time where an applicant and the Yankees are gonna say over the Yankees. And we we deserve. It's our birthright to get players like this. We're gonna what is Minnesota Twins. The of the modern day Kansas City or the the Kansas city's back in the day when they went and got players any players they want. And they go back and forth in your right gala that the numbers for about thirty million. Paragraphs. Might be conservative on this it would get it would become a silly negotiation silly negotiating war between the Yankee immigrants the silliest of all.
Novel the one thing that that. Sort of works against my promise and I don't think it works against a lot is that Scott Boras does not represent John Bauer. -- pyro does make you got the interesting tie in between chip pyro and and Coke in the -- to the of the Thanksgiving dinner of all thanks you.
Yet we have Roger -- personal might be the the nicest guy. On -- and the second got nicest guy on -- it's his son the general manager of the Cleveland Indians march -- march -- marks a pyro. Is. The brother. Julie -- Jamie that's right Eric Mangini he's. Wife so Roger and I march of iRows got friends with Scott Pioli. So at Thanksgiving dinner once are able yeah man mark your pot marked a pyro and his buddy Scott Pioli on the other side. You have to -- sister Julie. With that are.
Are always happy husband. Her. Husband and -- wrote -- Eric Mangini. That you don't have Scott Boras involved but its popular vote -- which do have yet Roger pyro involved now. I know we always say this when it's not our money we always say well how much money does X neat. To let you know how much money does and and let's use -- You know that the twins are offering Joe Mauer twenty million dollars a year enough. And im gonna say what you can't live in Minneapolis on twenty million dollars a year Portugal but. What the difference between what the twins' offer. And what the Red Sox and yankees are -- million dollars is 800. Million dollars at a total. What is the difference is a hundred million dollars. What 'cause I I could and I don't even how they do it but let's say the twins offered ten years 200 million unprecedented for the Minnesota Twins. I'm telling you the Yankees and Red Sox would bid that they be up to 300 million right. They would I am about that for a minute what the difference between the two packages is 100. Million dollars.
And you know what is gonna -- he would beware that there would be worth it that's overpaid and I I'm not sure I actually am sure I don't agree with paragraphs a bit. I don't think he's worth 36 million dollars right now a -- guy. It's amazing that a catcher. An everyday catcher in Major League Baseball can lead in lead the league in hitting on me the most demanding on it a couple of close commanding position on the field. Here's a guy going out there are still. Getting pretty well he he he is he's good behind the plate arm is. There at this okay. But he does everything else I mean he's. What else can -- what else what else would would you want -- captured.
The Red Sox and yankees probably -- understand that if they signed Joe Mauer with ten year deal he wouldn't catch halting years. But there the American League they're okay -- that -- my hours and otherworldly hitter okay only catches 67 years. And then we slider right into the DH spotter maybe goes to first base or may be becomes an outfielder. Okay -- that will find a place to put that bat our lineup and that'll give us 67 years to find another -- replaced Joe Mauer on talent yet. Ten years 300 now the first hundred million dollar contract we want just the way that would gonna get -- 800 million dollars and it we were. And boggled my route went up to 52 today Iran went over 200 million and we thought what you can make. This guy's gonna be the first 300 million dollar contract. And you know what. In relative terms 'cause nobody knows he's going to be worth -- I want and it's gonna be worth it that he he he is going to he's gonna -- Almost all of the 300 million all of that obviously predicated on an -- on the idea that he doesn't get.
It -- yeah. Yeah Alex Rodriguez was worth the money yet you know what I budgets as -- Texas Rangers. Well they couldn't pay.
I mean it just at random they AM and then calls with them then what they voted last place at the other.
worth the money you're kidding of course Sewell reported that -- it was the same thing in audio the the it got better it -- it was borderline hit.
Org penguins signed Mario Lemieux to a contract they knew they couldn't -- He ended up owning the team the Texas Rangers signed Alex Rodriguez to a contract. That they know if they didn't pay him that amount of money didn't have any money left to give anybody else anything they hate them.
Yeah I did -- them because they can't put a team around at that but my my original question was wasn't worth it Jessica yes he has aren't.
The value I mean look again I I understand nobody's -- that he he's aren't the value of its contract. He's that good a player now he may have had some help -- as we now know it it may have -- fueled by something other than natural village so what.
you -- motivated he's earned it what what are you looking for how to how do you say he has earned it what what. What -- Alex Rodriguez done that is. That that makes you say. Oh absolutely -- 25 million dollars a year for this because I can't get it anywhere else for take fifteen million.
I I I think that yet he has done everything that was expected of him. Now by the way including winning World Series which was always fill the -- on his resume was he's never won one but -- you he has done everything. They thought he could do. Nobody thought in other words he has not. He hasn't gone far below expectations -- he's met all the expectations which means they put that value on those expectations that he's met them.
Well see here's the problem and and you you addressed that per second he wasn't worth the money. It wasn't worth the contract because -- for for many reasons but number one is. He prevented the Texas Rangers. From doing what they needed to do to become. A great team and most guys like that. Unless they're going to the yankees' most guys like that will prevent you from having a very balanced baseball team.
So let's what happened -- tackle by definition that this could happen everywhere outside of Latino or query is now happen outside New York. And and that's why I'm saying he turned it that's the only place I where I can say well maybe Alex Rodriguez made your money may be. Maybe if if if the Red Sox had to pay A-Rod 252 million dollars. I guess they probably wouldn't of won the World Series twice since 2004. Because of that because of that contract you can't do certain things. The Rangers I don't know what it and figure that out before they sign up Frederick to a contract like that. But you can't win I I I'm actually a big game James and -- bulky gear up the numbers of an attendance of about winning ball games. He went to Texas and they would the last place why. Because they didn't have money old to feel it pitching staff.
Here's what's funny he signed a ten year 252 million dollar contract with the Texas Rangers we all know the the famous opt out. And Scott Boras hijacking the World Series to announce to the world that he would opt out. -- and signed a ten year 275. Million dollar deal. With a New York Yankees which in 2009 paid him 32 million dollars yet. -- 2010 will pay him 32002011. Will pay him 31 million.
If you wanna if you attributes of good -- to go back and read the stories right after a rod signed that contract. And it was a devastating blow -- he was. The Yankees. Hold on how was going to be Brian Cashman one's got board slot. Orders haven't I doubt you I don't know I don't know which dope -- that -- one of the don't -- I was our weekly baseball guest I think Ken Rosenthal. Well one of the peoples and it was a loss for you say outdoors was a loss yes he went for ten years 252 million -- you have 275 guys in a loss you know remember this is what happened. He opted out of the contract. And Ann and Scott Boris was trying to hold the Yankees up and everybody else up for more money -- he opted out right journal -- right and then. They may have written it up pointed it was stupid you'll never get our money any more mono they wrote that he lost because they rod. What was his body -- was it Warren Buffett. Is that some famous rich body anyway it was somebody who went back to the Yankees instead Alex is having second thoughts. Scott Boras was out of the negotiating session was basically A-Rod. Negotiating with Brian Cashman and Steinbrenner and that's why people were saying -- Scott Boras was humiliated -- which -- he lost. And has climbed -- 275. Million dollars.
