Wasn't expecting too much on my part I mean was it was -- unrealistic expectations. Fermi. To think that Bill Belichick might possibly stepped to the podium and say you know what I just all those guys in there this one's on me. You know I've met and I told him that -- I try to put them in the best position to win and I didn't do that tonight -- on me was that expecting too much on my part. Yes. Even if he felt that he wouldn't say it and I don't know that he felt that by the way I'm not suggesting -- I don't know but even if he felt that we ever say it.
Yeah I think if he felt that he would say -- I think he was. Leading the class it was the worst mistake. Anybody made last night just because of when it happened. And the -- there were involved there were other mistakes and there are other things that cost them the game but this thing lot of Laurence Maroney this was the biggest.
I'm the reason we lost the game.
But real and really know manipulate and it wasn't just go on for. It was during the timeouts needlessly in my opinion the first one abut the socket managed that -- that it was horrible. It was all those things we mock other coaches sport we make fun of Rex Ryan we make fun of Eric Mangini. All that stuff that we mock bad coaches wore your coach gave you last night. You don't have the right personnel on the field Brady has the burn a timeout you could see the reaction from Kevin Balkans like what the -- we -- and out here. Then you decide you're gonna burn your third and last time out. To make the bad decision in my opinion gulf war so even if you -- and by the way I only play it would have been overturned. I don't think there was -- and evidence -- dolls and all we're actually not but it's now almost beside the point because you elect yourself in a position. Where if a plate could've been overturned by up to bad bill you -- time --
Yet there are a lot of things going on there and I said -- earlier today. It seems like. Bill Belichick loses my when he goes to Lucas Oil Stadium doesn't add up you know what getting the same thing last year he had. He had a bad. He had a bad performance last year always same time November 2008. Versus the colts. Winnable game. And he cost the team at this in this case -- is just the opposite. On fourth down was -- it was fourth and goal. There -- gonna go for a for now they picked up before. They picked it up that paper but he called a timeout before the play. Second guessed himself. They went -- and kicked a field goal. Mean. So he was too conservative. And that situation where should have been. And yesterday he was too bold. In a situation where should.
A few years ago we used to say this all the time around here that build ballots yet within Peyton Manning's had any -- You know what now Peyton Manning is in Bill Belichick says. Peyton Manning is the reason Bill Belichick made the call because he was scared to death of what Manning was gonna do now. And and Peter King does a great break down -- Monday Morning Quarterback today of of the preceding drives. Many if failed more than he would succeed bright but the most recent drive the Belichick cat in his head. Manning had just marched down the field against a defense that was too soft and given up too much in the middle. And a bad 31 yard penalty thrown in there as well but but you know he -- that was the last thing he had seen in his head and it was. I got more faith in Tom Brady picking up these two yards then I have faith in my defense being able to stop him.
There are silly forth into that situation. You got a six point lead -- I mean it's it's basic it's basic. I think you know. You punt the ball. If punt the ball. Four for a few reasons. One -- odds are in your favorite to better percent of what you don't like either one you don't like wan port -- and do I don't -- you do you shouldn't. It like going out on -- report on -- and -- from your own 28. You don't like given up the ball but -- and Peyton Manning's hands in the last few minutes of game. Up by six. But your percentages say. You got better success you got a better chance of winning and winning the game by pulling the ball. And turn it over to a defense that actually made some plays last about 35 point. They may imply. There's another thing I don't understand. If you send that message that you don't. Believe in your defense. When you get down there when Joseph Addai ran it down to the two -- three whatever was. At that point let him score score because it's not like you got Bob Brady 45 seconds it because it's not like 2003. And 2003. The same thing happened once again it was November funny how that works during sweeps -- sweeps month. 2003 is November. And Indianapolis. Patriots colts they've got the ball the colts do. Bill Belichick is not thinking about letting the colts score because you got. Rodney Harrison on defense in that Willie McGinest and he got that Ted Washington. You've got Mike Vrabel. You've got the young playmaker at that time Eugene Wilson you've got some guys that you believe and and you feel like. I'll take my chances. But clearly. Clearly you don't feel that way excuse me in 2009. Because if if if this were 2003 if you look at this defense this and we look at the 2003 defense put upon the ball. Upon an asset I know my -- guys all our guys a stop on right come up with some.
There's no way. And they can drive the ball eighty yards seventy yards sixty yards on us. So upon a two on and see what happens so if you don't have deep you don't have confidence that defense. Another mistake you made is. Is what letting them milk the clock and not let him score early. Now if you are. You're telling yourself it's still have a chance on defense to stop them when they're down their near the goal. This -- to -- Jonathan Wilhite if he if he gets by you. Even a step. Jump you jump Angel back tackle him and because they're not gonna award the touchdown -- near the goal line anyway. They'll put it -- the line. And you take your chances they got a timeout left. Do they run the ball as they try to do some fade pattern is it going to be quarterback draw from Peyton Manning I don't think so. A very very disappointing loss because -- like the patriots. Had control. Of the entire game are -- they had control and -- game.
And and you know they they they had a magical -- offensively. I mean really the Brady moss hooked up. The colts couldn't stop at no adapters for hears that the other problem in this game. Is Brady threw an interception in the end zone that was killer morality Laurence Maroney fumble inexcusable. You can't do that and be back in this league especially can't be considered a top back in ethical line UK -- little ball there. And I don't care and anything really get hit that hard I don't care if you -- drill you can't fumble the ball there he can get hit that hard to begin with. The patriots. Could have should of one of -- appoints the blow this team out and and they just did.
Get it down they did they they were in control gaming you know 24/7. 3114. You felt like they can move the ball. Almost anytime they want and except for in the fourth quarter with a minute left more than two but yet it's just that extremely disappointing loss a shocking loss.
By the patriot and a and a loss that is a killer in so many ways and I know we talked about this a little bit yesterday on NFL Sunday. You had it laid out almost two perfectly yesterday the way to hold anyway. It was almost the basketball possibilities. Now by kicking the way this game last night. You have obviously Indianapolis is at a Cincinnati's -- Denver is tied with you but they -- to their ahead of the so and a best case scenario right now you're at your fourth. Well and you get a home game if you win the division anyway but to -- one. You'll play opening weekend you'll get one home game and and you on the road well if they if they win win the division got the win in the division. While it's a legitimate question after what you saw last night. And I forget which is there were some east analysts I watched after the game might have been the -- I forget. Talking about how this could be devastating for the -- going forward. When you get the jets -- in your next weekend. Can this team recover. Mentally physically how well usually all that.
I don't know -- I'm not talking about the emotional. Impact. Going into next week and we've seen this team we've seen this team and it. -- met many members of this team have dealt with a lot of crazy things including the quarterback who has seen. One of his best buddies lawyer -- cut five days before the season is seen one of his receivers traded before the start of the season. He's had tough losses before they lose the Super Bowl after a -- received the they've they've been through some stuff I'm not talking about that. I'm just talking about ability wise they're six and three they really could've. Cause a major separation in the division. With with a victory yesterday. And they didn't get it. That's -- that's only reason I'm asking about the jets coming here when the game in the jets. Have swept the seasons series from the patriots but I I don't think. The just that the depression. Of the patriot laws will carry on for another two or three weeks in effect the way this thing plays again you let it affect the way. You know Bill Belichick calls the game but it won't affect the team play.
There's a a website called advanced NFL stats. And they actually have already done the statistical breakdown. And they have justified bill Belichick's decision to go for it on fourth and two. They've broken it down statistically. They said in in the National Football League. A fourth and two conversion would be successful 60% of the time. And they looked at at the Indianapolis situation. The ball on the 29 yard line two minutes left. Needing to get a touchdown to either win or tie a team gets a touchdown 53%. Of the time from that field position. They have actually made the statistical argument that Bill Belichick made the right decision. But I'm sorry you couldn't you throw numbers that you can give me statistical analysis. You can tell me how how many great decisions he's made his entire life which I agree with you giving all that stuff. He screwed up. And and it goes back to the Atlanta game and I know we had a disagreement about this -- back and they went for it on fourth down from their own 24 yard line. Sammy Morris convert its was in the third quarter so UN a whole quarter left to make up -- yeah I guess didn't get it.
Yet I thought it was dumb them. -- they -- I thought it was -- promise that there was even -- a third quarter what was the score at that time 72. Person like that. Not only 1612. That it it was it was close of the close game which you -- a whole fourth quarter -- up for a quarter if you failed unit time to make up for the mistake and here's the biggest difference. Their quarterback Matt Ryan. Vehicles lured back I'm supposed to be particularly -- hey man -- I can live with that if you don't if you don't pick that up is now like. They're two minutes left in the game you've turned it over and there's no chance of correcting your mistake or correcting your gamble with on call mistake let's -- to gamble. Fails you got a whole fourth quarter to make up for it if you if you didn't miss it. Here you -- you look you can't you can't make it I just to you know god I can't open an argument I I actually tried Joanne -- believe. Can't believe they lost that game there -- so many. Problems and so many mistakes in that game is gonna drive them crazy it should drive Bill Belichick raised I think he's at the top the list. Guys you have to look at and say what the hell were they thinking. Yeah applicant Lawrence minor. -- Lars by and are now Ernest Bynum -- Yet there yet botnet has by NASA and Maroney right Cali about her own anymore -- on just -- start that turned a corner. And be relied on to be counted on. He gives it up but the ball in the era red zone law and not a reds in yeah so Maroney is a mistake. Belichick's mistake. The Brady interception. At that point. You keep hammering this team you have take you to take the spirit away from yeah yeah you gotta but the long faces you had -- opportunity that is the bottom. And they couldn't do the defense. Defense.
I mean this is that it.
That this was some bad defensive football.
Although ironically it was it was mixed in with some pretty good if they may put the ball plays but -- seven months. 43 and now we have a couple of uncharacteristic. Wounded duck Peyton Manning passes that were hard to pressure out pressure. You know a couple of interceptions he had some good. Too much bad you lose 3534. Will go right to the call I will tell you this we don't normally pick up the Bill Belichick press conference at 1145 today but we -- I wanna hear what he has to say. I I was gonna say having had a chance to sleep on it but I don't think he's been asleep at at 1145 Bill Belichick will write down the hall here stepped in front of the podium. And I'll be curious to CP has the same answer today. That he had. Ten hours ago. I don't nobody well I'll be curious to see -- probably. -- will find out all five lines are lit up you guys have been waiting all day long probably since midnight.
