Well you know being and the community with the Celtics. They you've got a few of them noticed we've lost a 100000 jobs in the last twelve months. And Indus is not numbers people are really hurting out there so I step back and said. You know this politics of blood sport I've certainly learned that in in the last three weeks in Massachusetts. Is not for the faint of heart. But I have the skills to bring these jobs back at the skills to get things done and we don't really have people that have business experience and have. Skills and investing Donald Washington and I said no I -- my family and they were supportive and it incident Kennedy tower of I don't run because. This is a unique point in history we just come off a huge financial crisis we've lost. Lots of jobs and we gotta get back.

Were you pushed or did you jump.

I jumped. Did anybody push it to anybody I'm obviously had to run -- by some people not name -- you can buy what I wanted Ted Kennedy's funeral which was very you know touching instead event. And many people came out with funerals that you the commonwealth is really hurting him you know you you have experience you get things done things are getting done Washington. You really nothing about running and I start thinking about that day and within like I called several people that you have these what was it couldn't get the right people to help me. Turns out it could get the -- people help me. Give my message out and so I decided I think three is Saturday and run.

We have via I mean you -- the credentials to be the outsider you can't be the outsider. You know the reformer in the different candidate got Lexus business experience. So why do you go around that Ted Kennedy you know Michael Campbell wanna laundry list of all the same and it positions on all the same issues. I you don't have us that's that's that's that's really easy for me and it's really is -- is.

You know I I haven't felt in in my name and I grew up playing on -- courts and number one thing I learned this is it's all about equality. And all those values to me -- what -- flow from that it equality so I believe everybody should have the same rights. What I was in North Carolina. I try to get a job as in your industry is the television salesman for freedom to sell ads and and the guy had a green jacket on I interviewed those young kids summer job. He says you have all the ingredients do this job but you do one thing you want the job to mark and and -- as a what's the -- change your name's Stephen page. His pal you -- rising North Carolina I was Steve's page for summer so so I have all those values so that's very easy for me and I've always had progressive values and and I believe in equality and in all those things stem from that.

You say your parents. Fathers salesman among the ones will. -- you feature -- you know middle class -- upbringing absolutely and and you and you say progressive value -- with progressive he's a modern. When you were kids of parents around the dinner table with the for partial birth abortion and gay marriage in. All of these progressive values can slide I don't think the previous generation had a whole lot of progressive values I think my mother does I was talking to my mother just yesterday and -- talking about you know you know 4050 years ago when I was grown up. Because is that that was that was question asked myself and I feel great to have grown up for Christian values and she was ahead of time so. Absolutely it just your parents were big partial birth abortion proponents like that why don't I don't either I don't think we -- we we we -- about we we didn't talk about being pro choice -- those days we had. We had also issues like Vietnam and and and things going on the appointed time gay marriage to gay marriage and that's absolutely that's really you're dead salesman in the Italian. Leo Catholic -- but this is -- my dad is actually my dad's actually 85 years -- on. Saturday we're going down to a -- union. My dad is a wonderful guy has no prejudice and I've been just happy -- been raised that way. So it's prejudice if -- for gay marriage Kazaa I I think so I wouldn't say that's prejudice I think so I think we can give everybody the same rights -- you know. They look I K my grandfather came from Italy and in -- shoe factory for 4042. Years I think on the factory floor. And he came with nothing. And I think the whole thing and America's you gotta have equality. And and that's for everybody what you're gay and bisexual African American Italian Irish. So you're the -- from being down here for years here right Irish -- that your you were raised Catholic I was raised episcopal old dialogue -- I was gonna say. I was curious if you -- real in a Catholic or Ted Kennedy John Kerry Catholic who. On in a Sunday goes to mass in a Monday sets in and defends partial birth abortion and on the Senate floor but I'd like your I'm rooting for you and I know that means a lot to you got -- hot topic.

I don't believe you Steve I don't believe -- why should I don't surely they -- if you shake your hand I've -- votes which you have to do not I don't -- I'm not and I believe you can't -- a successful businessman and honestly think the cap and trade debt and that is that you can't believe that that's a good idea that's still in troop cap and trade has worked very very well in Europe and the question is. Why wanna run his. It's how you implement OK if you phase it and if you do it at the right time the -- the cocaine of America's foreign oil okay. A cap and trade will help us get off for a drill our -- the most is the most polluting source to a drill offshore. I don't one officer you want drill in Alaska you know we don't have to be drove -- we don't have enough Jerry Arnold you don't have to -- drill offshore. We just use more oil. And and that means we by moral from from from overseas. We sent 700 billion dollars last year more overseas for oil. That we had three years ago. That is funding people that are fighting us good does not buying at the domestic drilling here we haven't no we have to get off oil we drill here we use moral. So we gotta get off on by in Massachusetts is a leader in clean tech. And and and efficiency. About 30% of the energy we use yours is is is not -- we can take enough out. There we can get down 401 my main platforms is to get off for a that you welding class entry hurts our economy. No no and you go better than we would mean you know if you implement appropriate if you face it and if you do it the rightness threatened John Kerry has a built talking about this mark is bill. We have to do it what's killing our economy is foreign -- I don't have to do we have to do it for the environment we have duke is our economy is getting killed by for a if we get a -- Our products will be cheaper have jobs coming back here so we gotta get a 40 we gotta fix the health care system. And we got to get people back to working and that I have to ask one more course do you think John Dennis pays enough to.

All -- the only question. Now what I out of out because I know he's in this in this in this Echelon I'm sure highest bracket top 1% of American wage earners do they pay their fair share of the need to pay some more Steve.

You were were facing unprecedented deficits the deficit. You you guys remember. In 1982 were so the national debt crossed the trillion that was a big deal that. Now the national debt is at thirteen trillion. The yearly deficit is running over trillion so we have a huge huge problem now what we have that problem the main reason -- other problems we've lost jobs. Every recession -- six recessions the way we've paid back the deficit and even in periods in the ninety's got into -- into black is we've had job growth. So I'm all about job growth that's gonna pay the deficit back number 11 and foremost that's independence back that's gonna get it down to we gotta have job. The top 1% pay 40% of the taxes is that enough. You know we've we've had a very very as compared other countries for the top 1% of very low tax regime. And we've had the lowest capital gains tax that it we've had in fifty years in America you'd think it's too low was -- its low. Do you think capital gains tax should be raised looked at our Maria I'm a realist I don't want -- you know I'm I'm not a politician with a realist. If we gonna have a gap it's gotta be solved and it's got to come for the wealthy people it can't come from the working class because there is no more money there. At of the -- the wealthy people done very well -- twenty years so. Number don't my heart I want I want I thought that people I know that you're the one who hires in if we tax you more you can hire less. If I'm happy in the first vote number one the -- closest GAAP. Is job growth right that's that we were close diskette. If we get to get smaller we want have to tax increases for anybody if we don't. We gotta -- from somewhere. And I think you have to look at slight increases in the capital gains tax. It's slight increases in tax for the wealthy Americans that's the only way to get it so a lot of topics invest not a we cops -- much investment not a popular thing to say. But that's would get it and I don't think in I'm an investor investor and will increase -- one iota if you raise -- that -- 1% would increase wouldn't it wouldn't decrease on -- you have to pay more tax if you -- everybody has to pay the same thing and an -- and investors you know how to manage risk. Again we're talking about slight things of the year we don't wanna do things to go guard really Garwood which we often do with the politicians don't wanna go guard regard real. But we've got to close this -- the number one way to close the gap gap is to get jobs back here. The numbers also rated at a sense of urgency and it worked like a dog to get these jobs Specter make things happen.

We're talk to a US senate candidate Steve Bell you can steal them on what are you play with the Laffer Curve the economic thing that says. Just because raise taxes certainly -- high and doesn't necessarily raise tax revenue a -- smart enough to grasp and I'm sure yours being dynamic investment guide you buy into the Laffer Curve says.

You know kind of left that the curfew. But that's -- you don't buy and the Laffer curves -- a concept it's a concept and and it's the sound -- my campaign is not about sound bites and constant. My campaign is about going on to the ground. Figuring out how we do life sciences public private partnerships. To get biotechnology and and helped -- going in Massachusetts. To create jobs if you go to my website. I have very specific proposals on how to create these jobs one by one. And the promise. Politicians talk from the mountaintop. And say we -- readjustment but there's no plan I'm very specific plan. That'll get us jobs sector by sector if you step back Massachusetts. Is the leader. In several industries that are growing and biotechnology life sciences clean tech high tech. Fisheries we've got to get these back going and we have all the greens here they've done and other places in North Carolina. They set up a thing called Research Triangle Park about 3540 years ago when I went and read for went to school there that was -- tobacco fields originally was nothing on and now they have a huge. Biotechnology. Information technology business down there because the government got together with private enterprise and created an environment that they could do that.

Steve why the guys with the goal support politicians. Who don't necessarily reflect reflect their views and their core values. You wrote a check coming to Toronto he wrote a check to Busch but exactly aligned with what you're talking and espousing today.

Well I think that's been blown out out of all proportion. You know I work with Mitt Romney for close at twenty years and that he was a friend wrote that check at a French -- by the way was a very small checked compared what I've done for -- Democrats. I sat behind John Kerry when he was set nominated for for for the presidential nomination here at the garden. I raise hundreds of thousand dollars for John Kerry were with Ted Kennedy last twelve years but healthcare raced thousands of dollars for Ted Kennedy. So so so those are very very small donations and my opponents use that as kind of a label who and that's the whole problem Washington. -- Ted Kennedy's best friend was Orrin hatch you know they -- together to get things done. I'm a person that's gonna go down there and get things done I'm not gonna rest until we do the right things to really make jobs happen. -- on what do you disagree with Barack Obama what he has -- You I'm so glad -- Obama supported him heavily as well I'm so glad he's he's in the White House. Because he's brought what I'll call a fact based approach to government. So he's got a fantastic staff by I know most of the guys down there. And you know man you know this that they they look at needed Dundee you know this I don't know -- don't know I know David Axelrod and I -- gonna -- sciences is chief performance officer. And Austin goosby who's doing his health care plan and economic plan and these are very fact based people. The probably had the previous regime is is they came up with the answer. -- implement the answer before they got any facts so we -- country that didn't have nuclear weapons and now we have thousands of troops over there we tactic for no reason. So so I really welcome Obama I welcome his approach I welcome the fact based decision making and and I wanna come down there to help him get -- nothing. And you disagree with Ted on the wind farm that's a good thing I yes I DiSpirito and partly open -- disagree with -- like apple on -- you -- different. I obviously he I thought what she's I think I think you arm you are bashing politicians which I like you gotta keep that up at that and how are you different than the Paula I'm not trying to bash politician that's what what -- try to do is is to say. I think in in congress right now on the Senate two thirds of the people define themselves as career politicians. Or lawyers. We need somebody who's been on the ground that understands business. Understands results understands how you Marshal the facts and get programs done. We've had far too long we're not covered by health -- far too long we've been fighting these wars so so Sami had something different to if you look at me. I'm very different than the people are running none of them has any experience on the ground building businesses through I've done that Mitt Romney said the Senate got results.

And in and Romney that was the same pitch we hear from Mitt. And on the he was a businessman not a career politician and certain that's certainly one meal over -- guys actually and -- back pay taxes I mean that's unique concept actually paid taxes and -- a in a drain. On the on the -- that got the -- run in I'm not Mitt Romney okay what what what what I am is a progressive Democrat. Who believes that. Government. Can help people and do the right thing. If it's targeted and we have a sense of urgency and we we get the facts and we implement those facts we can have problems -- different from -- one on the -- different -- different because chapel 10 it doesn't have the experience actually being. On the ground in the economy you know starting small businesses understand the issues -- understanding getting through red tape. Having the the the appropriate regulations. I have a financial plan without that will stop the next financial crisis have one doesn't have that play.

Steve people who know you'll a lot battle -- nine people -- you know see new operates -- you be successful every single level site. I don't see Steve -- as being happy with being one of 100 in the Senate. I see Steve belly -- doing a bigger job and being more rewarded and being more effective. As being one of one in the Statehouse now I know you're not ever in the -- campaign -- justice -- some sort of warm up act to run for the governor but if this thing this little senate thing doesn't work out for you is governor down the -- something you could see yourself --

That's actually not that this is this is not a world backed that this that this is that this is -- for you would better know this for -- back you know I'm in this to win. I believe were unique moment a time where I have the international skills you know I've -- I've been all over the world it yet I've been a part of the world economic form. I have the financial skills to get get us out of this crisis the international skills at the federal level. And that's where I can contribute so so I step back and thought long and hard about this and said. If for ever I can contribute and give back and I wanna give back because I had a shot the American dream I want other people have that shot. I'm gonna -- do this is not the easiest decision make. It's -- blood sport but it's the right thing to do so this is what I'm focused on I'm gaining the message is resonating. People are more more people are are coming to my headquarters -- the website. Menem is building and I'm very optimistic that we get it done.

About all of my final question is a hard question Ortiz he wants Alaska we'll find out would you rather and you have a choice here one of two things they're beat. -- the Celtics win the NBA championship this year where you win the US senate seat. I think we'll go for the two championship answers.

And now European politician. The Celtics by the way. I'm just so proud of the team and what they've done in the community both their character and on the court. I watch the pre season games you know late at night like a moment and and TiVo after the campaign trail. Is just a joy to watch these guys with the deepest team we've had since we've been here will campaign for you and ray Allen's very politically. Active. Big Obama fan you guys -- Italy and -- and his wife called me proactively so they'd like to have fundraisers have fund raiser for me. I haven't Scalabrine who this guy says he's gonna support its its its one line it's it's amazing it's amazing I'm so -- she -- the -- intimidation and I appreciate by the way and that Rasheed he's he's a great family man he's been great teammate. I'm just really excited and and I'm just overwhelmed by their support they've reached out. It's just a fantastic group of people that associate with and and it's wonderful -- like a tough balancing act to be the outsider and reformer. While continuing through the pandered to unions in the teachers and all that. Powers that be tackled and all the it was a in this particular I'm I'm not pandering to anybody these are my views you know my mind must follow the law was in the union my grandfather worked and effective for. I know it's like -- furniture myself. So so so so there's no pandering thing is. I'm -- in OPEC and takes no pack money so pac money you -- or you like I mean you you mean you know like Obama. Signal obviously news that 00 pac money or pac money no money from lobbyists nobody from obvious that it can't be bought and sold. I think one of them knew that this who thinks people matches won his. Somebody that understands the struggles of the middle class and small business I have that in -- somebody's second taxes obscure skis and that -- that's good so that's who had a real job via -- last real job. You go over ice cream truck like you know thirty years ago these guys are career acts -- don't know what it's like well I actually like I work that I can store for awhile -- that but. But but but but I have on the ground experience. And and in -- corrupted the the big problem in politics today in my opinion is the money that goes in for special interest groups through that's why we don't have the reforms that we need. So I'm totally and this is union special I'm totally not beholden to anybody. And and and and I would do the right thing so my messages. -- anybody do the right thing. And let's get job Specter Massachusetts use that experience you say in your hand and we've heard it once or twice. To oppose. The war in. -- with all due respect and we know mean you more news and vote on what was that it's at its India and I have to say something at a conference that -- by the media which means you have more record opposing the more than Obama -- because he didn't have the vote on either he just says it. In after the fact I was against that.

On geriatric I've I'm very passionate person and so you know so my hundred friends -- you talk to them there I was apoplectic about the war and end. You know I was on the tail end of Vietnam and a draft number and I would have gone to Vietnam my -- in tears. In the war ended right before they call my draft number. An and I saw many my friends you know you know get killed over there we gotta be very careful getting his -- I believe in counterterrorism. Which means let's find these terrorists where they are and take them out. I don't believe in nation building which is putting lots and lots of troops into place -- has different religions. A different ethnic groups that are fighting for a thousand years they fought against the Russians they fought with the Russians they fought against each other we're talking FK -- against Afghanistan. I am I am I'm for. Consolidating our troops there are keeping very safe but I like to bring home as soon as possible unequivocal about that. I just don't see a long term strategy. That that that occupying that country won't get us anything the terrorists have already moved to Pakistan the move to Somalia they moved to -- the people don't they heard us. Are not the people with Kalashnikov rifles with a horse on the ground and instant that the people they train in London the -- a train and Humber. And as a terrorism is is it is a cancer but it spread outside there is they've just moved. So so so I I would wanna talk to general Kristol the joint chiefs are very skeptical about sending more troops in and in general. I believe we gonna focuses resources on counterterrorism. Not -- surged certainty and nation building to.

Have any endorsements do you want the money and if you wanna be the outsider you don't necessarily need the glow over the teachers union endorsing you do you endorsements come with a price so I've not sought endorsements that. I've gotten a lot of positive. Feedback from union members of memberships. And so so the memberships have their own minds this is America and hopefully they'll vote for me because they want to get their prospect here they want to children. At the same opportunity that we had will -- write a check to you. I don't think so that's on the other side of the net posts -- everybody that I have. Really says he's -- as friends and you say you wrote him as quick as a friend I did I did it and and it would even ask for checked -- because again people label you. People they've -- this is not about labels this is about understanding business and getting things done -- Washington the state Massachusetts.

The pac money is corrupting and the other opponents are taking that money and you don't tell me that that doesn't affect your behavior.

In 67000. Dollars in debt yeah. And my wife voice yells at me because I think she had cut a few thousand dollars.
