Pardon the crude analogy but the body is -- even dead yet people around here doing the Red Sox autopsy aren't -- I mean it is it is like you gotta get this guy -- that guy got to do this to got a trade for that to help you're not getting better. You get worse Michael Larson got to work on it so I went by EO. I understand it I understand you'd you'd you'd do -- I -- it. Try to figure out who's going to be here next year. -- I've been doing it for today what I agents are available what trades could be made isn't it fascinating to think about I mean really. And and I give the a lot of credit for this because he's -- guy who has not exactly been operated Steve Phillips told. The NC this morning. You think about some of the moves this -- made he's got courage. You know he he he paid Rolen and and who was it Johnny Cash and Johnny Damon -- after World Series when he lets them walk. -- Nomar Garciaparra. Trade Manny Ramirez's.
Bosnia as they did them it did them all at all at different times of mean write on and and had the courage and heading on I think you let Pedro go first Damon was back. Damon came back after the World Series. Yeah -- was after the 2005 season puts so you're right there's there's some big names. And a couple of cases some iconic names. That he's moved on from so. Then there's no fear involved I'll probably get cut -- issue the issue is. The market. That's the market wants is there anything out here for David Ortiz because of -- open up there they move on. Is there anything up here from Michael lol there is they move.
Well and and the way Phillips put a -- a former general manager he's got some some credibility in this issue some he set eight lead I understand -- said that the Red Sox would have to eat some money. And and and I agree with him in both cases they'd have to -- some money. And they couldn't expect a lot return. That that for both Lowell and Ortiz if they did move them. -- not gonna get a whole bunch back in -- gonna have deep part of the contract.
Yeah it's too bad now that they could be. Viable player for somebody maybe even the Red Sox if they made five or six million dollars a year. But. You can double that. Quadruple that it is grateful that I -- that as Ray Lewis was -- put. You know it's one thing to Tennessee guy with seventeen homers 75 RBIs limited movement. And a good clubhouse presence no decent glove. Seek out like that he's making six million sure. Movement somewhere. Unity even if the is not the player used to being.
Or -- or you can afford to keep me even -- right solace Tim Wakefield all that's you know that's a very reasonable number. Ike I can I can live -- I can live with the the limited productivity or or limitations to what I can do but I'm okay. I would think the Owen and his baseball ops people think and we have -- thirteen million dollars for David Ortiz I thought I thought the -- quote yesterday was so telling. If Ortiz is our DH. I don't think he ever says anything off the cuff that is in fairly well right bought out ahead of time. He wanted David Ortiz to hear if David Ortiz is RD.
I don't know freeway he was trying to send a message -- that probably would that would that with the Red Sox sending a message I don't believe it with the patriots either I think he was he was. I think yeah I think he was just telling you a lot of the guys back here next year eighth there was -- small irony here is he's under contract. Right he's under contract for next year so -- traits. Short but have a guy who's going to be very difficult to -- we always say that we always say that we said that that. Rent direct was untreatable. They traded and it was until -- eight bottles holiday -- not tradable right at Julio Lugo was on -- tradable until late ate a bunch of the contract okay yeah but you can trade some of these guy.
While the other thing is in Ortiz is case you have half the teams that you can trade him to the hat for those -- Here on tradable to the national. He can't play in the nationally nobody's gonna use him at first base in the National League. So so you party limited your trade partners by half the only place he goes the American.
I don't know I don't know why not not know that dale if he is it depends how much money -- I -- makes what you're saying makes sense is that the eight. Hasn't played many games of first and plated first -- what terrible but -- is not a great first Brit nobody would argue that. What I'm saying if you if you're telling me I could have David Ortiz after all the counting is done. I can have David Ortiz one year is this right last night country. Or one year and five million dollars yes. I would play in the first base for. Let -- plan the first game -- the first 400 games.
There I don't believe there's a manager in baseball. Would put David Ortiz at first base for a hundred games and and by the way if if it was one million dollars I don't believe there's --
A mandatory million dollars just they would. It is still depending on the numbers. But the they have the larger point is you're right the bodies still warm. And we are talking about the Boston Red Sox trying to figure. -- where they go from here this is city yesterday I believe -- more today this is said the 2010 season is going to be. A transition year. For the Red Sox. You know they might they might go back to the playoffs again. This might be one of those 8687. Win seasons for them as they tried to figure out who they're going to be they might get some guys who were too young. To produce at the level that they need to be -- to really compete. At a at a championship level. So maybe you know they they take 2010 it's a nice little -- 2011 they -- 2011. It back to a championship level. You look at the positives of this team now. All of their out starters and -- counting on for starters that they are counting on a 2010. Are on all under thirty years.
And under contract. Or under control reckless in the case -- but either way you've got your onboard our charters all wrapped up and you look at Papelbon. He's 130 I don't know I think he's going to be one of the big stories of the offseason. Because I think the Red Sox were at least gonna consider the possibility of trading Jonathan palpable. Nothing they will -- him at the end of the day because he's he's under your control for not only next season but the season after that. You'll have him under your control for two more seasons. Blocked. If you didn't trade Jonathan Papelbon. Because he's under control for two more seasons Andy's still one of the elite closers in the game. I think you'd get you'd it would be the basis for pretty major.
Okay and I got a got a couple questions where. One. I'll I'll start with number two who I was gonna make this I'll start with my second question that came to my mind. What you expect to get. For an All-Star closer.
Well I think I I think that he would be part of a package. That would land -- Felix Hernandez or Adrian Gonzales. I think he would he would BA eight keep part of that kind of of.
Major package. Not gonna happen. Not gonna happen that there's no way means that you that there's no general manager in baseball or manager in baseball will play David Ortiz. The first on -- your game right.
The general manager. Who would trade as as principals and a -- audience and principal Richard said major part of a major part absolutely but if you're if you're talkin' Felix Hernandez. You know you're also talking Buchholz or Bolden it or barred. -- or Papelbon -- I'm using him in that case I think that the Red Sox would be more likely to trade Papelbon in that scenario --
Well it would have to be Al lot more than Jonathan Papelbon picked -- because there's there's no way you would you trade a starter. Possibly. You know it in the conversation as the best or second best starter in all of baseball and go back and forth between Greinke. And Felix Hernandez from.
I -- I wouldn't argue with either way I love I -- ball okay.
Papelbon. I'd say keep talking and you better keep talking for a long long time kitten as I said it would take. Apple -- slash barred. Bolton slash Buchholz. Ellsbury. OK I don't know him. It would take that kind of package why would you focus on that mountain Dominic go to. Number one why would you do that well if you decided that you get one -- 01 or two best -- still now word that they'll -- I mean do you believe the media reports of the package they reportedly offered JP rich hardy for Roy Halladay. And by the way if you told me. I could have beat the -- I'd take Hernandez. Yeah but the media reports with. Reality didn't include. It's called real there six sky he says they're all minor leaguers I don't believe that all war. President deciding Bard was part of the there's nobody boat was part of the package minor leaguer or Buchholz. And minor. French French Major League meet Clay Buchholz left this year it's 92 it. Only two innings having a baby. You -- if you give me 200 innings and of Clay Buchholz -- onshore. A Major League he he started the year -- market. I still look at him as a prospect I don't know what he has yet what you just said a minute ago. That he was one of your four rotation guys under contract what are their got you under what -- he wouldn't be Toronto -- Seattle. I'm saying -- you dale. He started the year as a prospect in Boston I don't know what he's going to be -- it I know the Red Sox had a as the number three starter in the playoffs. -- Understand Jesus. At the time of the trade at the time of the right holiday trade -- had gone on a Runyan right so he's a minor leaguer can yeah he's a minor league he went in and yeah. Michael vote is a minor -- kid. Daniel partisan unknown you know minor leagues major leagues on that bordered on -- going back and forth. -- didn't bark never back and forth over -- at that time at that time. Bartlett was part caught up may. And -- and was basically up I'll vital part of this team almost from day one Daniel Bard. And what fifty innings threw fifty innings this year well we're -- happening on only through 68 adult. Dale the difference between Daniel -- Jonathan Papelbon in terms of importance to the team. That there's no comparison.
But what I'm saying to you and I don't know why you trying to argue for the sake of argument. They were minor leaguers they were not. Then we're not trading anyone off of the Major League roster 88. Top seven top eight lineup guy they were not trading -- top seven. Pitching staff guy either for Roy Halladay. So yeah you would make that trade but a trait that involves Jacoby l.'s very and all this other stuff. For Felix Hernandez and Jonathan public so you're trading two guys off the.
Gradually I did you say I would I said that's the type of package your gonna have to give up -- you wanna get Felix Hernandez so it's a waste we will waste our time they would never do that. They would never trade that whenever I'm not sure that they -- I. Well they would trade Jacoby Els dairy and Jonathan Papelbon. And Clay Buchholz for Felix are not Buchholz would vote yes. I think if you told me the package -- party I think if you told me if you're if you're the Seattle general manager and you Tellme you give me Ellsbury. Bolton and Papelbon out did you Hernandez I think -- would have to think about that pretty seriously I think.
You think about it with a big smile on his face he'd be that it's a comedy show I don't I don't that he I don't think he'd consider that the St. Joe that you there's there's a new wave of comedy in the Pacific northwest there's no way you're trading your leadoff guy you're trading your closer. And you're trading you know one of the pillars of your minor league system.
And I got some other for our arguably the one or two -- not starters in the -- and other issues I don't have a calls and I have a lead off guy well no I think that the closer issue. If you traded Papelbon you know who your clothes -- You made the determination if you can't trade him. The Daniel Bard is the guy do you think he has you can make that determination all you want you don't know what you have you might have a closer. Chances are you don't just started to you've taken a step back.
