How is everybody's weekend. Restful time nice weekend for everybody. Nobody had fun I assume.
But.
do you okay challenger Mike was only have a man from here. It does manage your business and I -- This quietly by the way. It has made your help team made so -- It's not just like this was not that we cannot help. Allowed them in IA tall man nobody was nice nobody help each other out on interest that -- Adnan this is all about -- mrs. typing Monday right here Gillette Stadium to be anywhere who could be at Fenway -- Gillette. -- doesn't matter convincing show this and I ago words bitch and well.
This was about -- as crummy as sports weekend as I can ever remember locally I mean I know back in the battle days we used that like this all the time we just don't remember them. And I you know I I know that really since. 2004 the Red Sox haven't you know taken us back to the bad old days very often. Patriots in the Bill Belichick era you know haven't on this or pretty much the 21 century they've been fine yes. So say that I have that are both do what they did on the same weekend. --
Well I do ranked him but the but the Red Sox first in the in the pay -- threaten us is more fine air this season is over and it's it's it's more surprising to him look about the patriots would blow. Image and it blew though booed out blew out about it would just crush. The Denver Broncos yesterday related. And they didn't so I mean it's surprising but it is it shocking that they lost the Broncos a place where. Denver no matter what -- amber has the patriots have story I have not done -- historically. But the Red Sox I can't believe they had a six were lead in the ninth inning two -- Papelbon on the two outs two strikes. Nobody on. And they lose again.
That's that's the battle -- you know that that that backed Aaron bleeping Boone and and -- back even further. You know that's the ball squirting through -- his legs that's. Dan Shaughnessy wrote that kind of peace a little today.
I honestly I can't believe you tell me Dan Shaughnessy wrote a story. That refers to curses. In 1986 dollars up. I report Dan Dan Dan Dan would write that I I think maybe you've got his byline confuse with somebody else because they would right. A story going back in Red Sox history that's not his thing.
Mean like it was shocking it was time travel it was back to the battled and Hollywood says that it was among Cobb. Matinee at our ancient baseball theater like that -- He's second or bring up now venture -- the year Bill Buckner parade -- just. I think. Here's how bad it was okay -- and I got to give credit where credit is do is -- big game James who came up with this one. -- Jonathan Papelbon became the closer for the Boston Red Sox. Yesterday it was only the second time he's been holed from the game in the middle of an inning and first time was could he -- older.
Yesterday was the second time in his career. And a closer look at it right right as elder. That he's been polled in the middle and -- and the first I'm ready I'm ready because his arm was hanging out of medicine so so if if that's the case. Then. Maybe we should give him a pass. It's gonna happen I don't I -- happen here not gonna happen in this town. But you think about this. The guy before yesterday had never given up around. In the post season. Before yesterday. Had kept closed down one and only closed down to 2007 World Series that goes on clothes on 2004 World Series that it closed on a World Series in 07. Had never get up given up a post season run. Had never. Had -- had multiple occasions where you had to take him from the mound when he was doing his thing as a closer.
So maybe -- that. He he probably does in the in the big picture. But in the little picture it's hard to deal with your Red Sox fan. I know Torii Hunter. Kind of scolded you members of Red Sox Nation or at Fenway yesterday. You know who you are you you usually you -- you who booed Jonathan Papelbon as he left the mound in the middle of the ninth inning. Torii Hunter pointed out correctly. That this guy has helped to win championships. He's helped you win divisions in playoff series and that in in Torii hunter's mind he deserves better. And in the big picture Torii Hunter is exactly right. But in the little picture. Two outs nobody on two strikes on the number nine hitter to run late ninth inning.
On the number nine hitter services and number nine hitter. Is a scrappy play mean and I'm hitter is that guy. You can root for. Me Eric I Barr -- today he's not your typically that he's not your father's number nine hitter. After about an -- in any of your nationally person he's not your father's number eight hitter yeah. It's not lead off hitter does that not a guy his nominees to you know to 35 to forty. Punch and Judy hitters in -- he can do some damage not not a power guy by any stretch but. Hangs in there and it was that was a big boy single he had their own Jonathan Papelbon and as soon as he got I think -- will lose the game at a bad feeling about it. As soon as he got that because is it not only to strike it's 02 on the number nine guys in the -- location was pretty terrible.
Well here's the irony as I watched the ninth inning unfold and as Papelbon was being booed as he left the -- gonna get the immediate attention. And the immediate ire of the Red Sox fans and he got it yesterday. But Dustin Pedroia deserves it. Kevin Youkilis deserves it Jason Bay deserves it David Ortiz deserves it went right down the batting order look at the numbers of how this team didn't hit. And explain to me how Jonathan Papelbon one inning implosion. Is more egregious than a three game. Completely -- episode of our.
That's an easy explanation goes it's just as you just said is the little pictures what we saw what we saw. Was it despite the struggles the -- the struggles of Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis and Jason Bay and David Ortiz despite those struggles. They were one strike away yeah play game today. -- again absolutely day. Down two games to one and and people here. A two game hole. Is not a big deal in 2009. As it was in. 1998.
Well let's be honest we're all sit narrows Papelbon is get the first two -- for okay -- Lester gonna do against Saunders. You know even though it's short rest he's at home your feeling pretty good about them. You know yet you got like chances of at least getting. Up fifth game out in Anaheim and of course everything fell apart that.
you're thinking of Joe Saunders takes the mound for game four. Just as I said yesterday -- have Adam and and feel good about the game but I felt I felt like the refs are gonna find a way to win -- same -- for game four. You've got a guy going on three games three days' rest even a guy like Jon Lester. Who who's got the body type to do it and got the mentality to do it you know so great about a guy going on three days' rest. But you do feel good about the Red Sox at home versus Joe Saunders absolutely.
And and believe me if if Jonathan Papelbon fell asleep at all last night and my guess is he probably didn't. He was sit there thinking the exact same thing if I get one more out we send Lester out against Saunders I gotta like chances of this team. I mean. It was such a sad photo and on the front page of The Herald today that you -- as you if you're watching the game he just sit there in the -- all by herself.
They can and you and you can talk about the the big picture I went down about how. You know you can has something do with that and -- now and Minnesota's Pedroia and everybody else. You could talk about their. But. Jonathan Papelbon as he's sitting there yesterday in the dugout is thinking to themselves. -- lost again. Absolutely no doubt there's no doubt he's -- this is and I pay me we're out data here where we're out of the playoffs. Because of -- Which is how Red Sox Nation was feeling as he was leaving them out yesterday was feeling and -- is feeling I don't know how. I know that the fringes always going to be crazy. That there -- there a couple of fringes if there's the there's the the the happy valley. You know lollipop. All isn't -- great we've got two championships. But a smile on your face and put a pep in your step there's that French I don't they represent. Any type of majority that like you know 45% of people out there. There's the other agents bug the crap out of the rest of as and then it right right you too happy to college aren't producing islet. Okay and then there's the other French -- of 5%. Where you know Papelbon he's lost it he's got to get out of here Tom Brady's -- to -- got to get out of here the Red Sox went seven games next year. The patriots are gonna go six and ten this year Bill Belichick should be fired that kind of --
I wonder what the people in the middle. What the normal everyday normal outfit and about a a man nor animals that there. I'm not sure we're gonna fight video they -- our normal Brian I I think we're gonna get a lot of of Terry Francona bashing. Because that's what we view here right if if it's not Jonathan Papelbon fault it's gotta be Terry Francona is Baltic about it there. Gotta get -- out we're -- go to -- who Hideki Okajima who is in that going with. Would get that you know we'll get some of the normal you know the lunatic fringes we say. But we'll get a lot of people who just the finality. You know surprising at it it it I'm not shocked they lost. I'm stunned that they got swept.
Right right yeah I you can see the the angels you could find a scenario which angels beat the Red Sox is not a stunning upset it would it's not like. If the twins had beaten the Yankees that would have been stunning to all of -- spring and angels have been in the playoffs for a long time seems like every year. There in the playoffs that's not the case but it just seems that way. They are very good team this year. You know top five team and run score top five and on base percentage. They can do some things they got -- can wreak havoc they got a good manager on and on. But I still didn't think. That they were capable of sweeping now the --
I agree with I didn't think so we. -- ninety seconds from now is if we haven't brought enough sunshine and light in revolves every break at all we'll talk about the patriots game in Denver will get to the -- with you will -- are patriots Monday guys. It's Galen -- live at Gillette Sports Radio that.
