So we actually had this discussion early this morning when we got together on our conference call and the question was. Would callers to Sports Radio be more excited about the return of Jon Lester on the promise that that holds. Or disappointed. And in fact angry about the play of the Boston Bruins and Michael brought it down a very basic question. What -- more people see last night my guess is more people saw Leicester than the Bruins but I'm not sure of baton. Probably close probably very close and -- and had a game I think that did the audience would have been closer.
game was on versus. That the Bruins games on versus the Red Sox game obviously on NASA and Pat Robertson the Red Sox game. You know based on what happened and Wednesday night maybe the Red Sox game got a you know four. -- As strong desire Marian. Hawkins. American -- these microphones here dale different mics indifference -- eras ago a year ago and now that now we're -- our studio and studio on Brighton. We go we go on the side of the -- exactly here we jumped on top of the.
I graduate slipped into the fourth dimension on me -- I don't know where I -- the Bruins game was horrible last night virtually on every level. They got out -- they got out worked they got out skated they got out shop they got outscored. It was horrible and and close Julian who was with -- yesterday afternoon. Sounded like a coach who got out everything last night after the game he wasn't very happy -- shouldn't.
But did you watch the whole game I didn't come back and forth I did watch him and it wasn't. It wasn't really grab me. And blood cells and an event. With -- They're really wanna grab me at the event -- I would I would guess more people. Saw the if more bloated and see the Red Sox Jon Lester shut down the Indians more people were concerned about the Red -- today they are about -- First game here 82 or or you know a little -- before the -- go on into the playoffs so there were no there were no after effects that we can see. From that from from last Friday a week a week ago today Yankee Stadium where. Where Jon Lester goes down and you wonder does he have a fractured. Kneecap is he going to be out for the rest of the post season. They have to go with the true number one starter on this team Dice-K yes they are. Formerly known yen and hope that I can be at Fenway tonight and hold it Daisuke accumulate them Japanese tonight it I don't need to -- is that those people. I think those people holding up those signs -- little insecure they want. They they don't they they think their supporters. But the got to let people know. You know what it's all about that you're trying to draw attention to you know capital I don't know what I exactly I know what's going on a Daisuke in and he knows who he is. I want to go tell the world -- dice -- great you know that.
Jon Lester with dominant now. Before we go to basically to me the Cleveland Indians and a a Cleveland Indians team that has already had their manager fired although. He and his snapple will work the weekend I decided upon Eric Wedge. I run up the biggest incidental bill in baseball history this weekend. I mean I I I am quiet lunch for everybody in the hotel lobby. I I have run up of an incidental bill you just read about the your real professional I know your real professional combine. To say I was -- or they might shape and that brought up the biggest Intel have any money the Cleveland Indians put money they have. And we've already got they got let them pay these -- and is already asking people to pick up lines for hand that's about violence for anybody. But yeah it was it was it was at least good to see the Red Sox win a game. If you can say the games are meaningless. But as we said yesterday you really went -- team going to the post season with a ten game losing I think I and I know you won't believe this I didn't care a bit about the score last night of fine they won. All I did hear about without Jon Lester pitch that's all I -- or they lose again last night you still don't care as long as Jon Lester look great that's all of that that was the only thing that mattered to me last night. I didn't care about Jacoby Ellsbury sixty eights 67 stolen base. I'm and I didn't care about you know big -- 97 RBI. I didn't care about look I I will say this I also cared about how Crist and a Christian the bullpen locked. Billy Wagner a great Jonathan Papelbon looked great. This of this pitch going question. You you're you're. We're second guessing -- to -- just the question I have is that's what's happened graphic -- on the -- these various Daniel Bard is on the mound you've got to pinch hitter up for. For Kelly Shoppach in -- the Korean player chew you up. And you blow a 199. Mile an hour fastball by him that he doesn't look like he could -- if he began swinging on Tuesday. You don't thrown a breaking pitch and it on the foot with I mean he was -- for matched those fastballs on -- month. -- yeah what you get is through want to first base but then you got the double play ball it didn't matter. I I you know I liked how the pitching looked unhappy about that I didn't care about winning or losing. You'd always rather win than lose I noticed the lineup was different last night from the night before. Those little different -- tiny bit there.
That's you have some regulars in there. One of adding him to do with fan appreciation weekend and how did that start can we can we find out. Who came up with the idea of fan appreciation weekend is this something they thought they talked about April and may I definitely is something they talked about at the beginning of September. Or is this -- and it came together after. The Red Sox were flooded with complaints. After -- Wednesday night's debacle.
Don't know the answer and perfectly valid questions on your part don't know the answer. What do you think. My guess is there was a germ of an idea there before this. But it in the aftermath of Wednesday night the germ became. A full blooded hey I know we're gonna deal. I think it has something to do -- Wednesday I'm a little some of -- connect we hadn't heard a word about it until yesterday at 1 o'clock.
Because that's something you -- then that's something you could promote. And and give fans excited about. You know couple weeks from now gonna have -- you a fan appreciation weekend he can run spots on NASA and and god knows they run -- a lot of you know back slapping. Spots on the on the network anyway. I'm -- you know. I guess I am complaining about it although I don't make any mistake we be run in the same -- house got -- asset -- a Saddam complaining about it as a viewer but with that said. Every outlet that that I've ever worked for including this one. Has done the same danger but yet they do enough of that step why couldn't they just add another one and say. Maybe around here be here in two weeks. Fan appreciation weekend you'll be able to -- your kids will be able to run the bases on Sunday. After the game you'll be able to get -- Jersey and autographed game worn Jersey. You get 20% off of all the merchandise Red Sox merchandise. You get complimentary. Cracker Jackson and popcorn on the so. -- we know the Red Sox do marketing pretty well yes they and this was. Day of marketing which is not really their styles I think it I think it is it is happen overnight pretty much.
All that way yesterday after it -- And if you're Bruins fan last night he came away from their probably gnashing your teeth a little bit. And an -- at some point or another the Bruins are going to be handed an opportunity in the gonna sees it. And they're gonna Ron whether they're gonna make the most of it but we're still waiting because they've had chances like that it like this in the past get by Carolina. You've got a whole different hockey mentality in these parts here in the Eastern Conference finals against Sidney Crosby in the Pittsburgh Penguins last spring. You not only been given an opportunity you've made the most of it in your often running. They had a great chance last -- are.
Are we past that are we past that they -- where the Bruins remain and it's stupid if you think about it it's stupid to say. While we get the fans if we win our home opener. And in front of full barn man and they could be with -- all year and so if you lose. These people aren't with you like that those that you don't want though you don't want those folks you don't wanna stay away stay home. It if anybody is gonna look at an eighty game season. And judge -- team after one game. Then you know what you need to go back at and -- probably get a little a little one on one work in that sport.
Nobody nobody's judging them on one game but but a hockey fans out there who have been so desperately waiting for last night and here we go. And yet yet throw up a stink bomb like that they just dot com -- now okay fine but don't do this now what game. One zone and then whether the united they're gonna not come back anymore the Bruins let me down again brewers fans will -- a hard cores will always be.
And -- a hardcore bands will be there but I think fans of I think fans of the Bruins who are not hard core of yet. Who can't tell you about the Bruins in 1975. And -- the Bruins even in 1985. Look at and say okay. They lost there season opener. -- did to a team that has. To some people the best player in hockey. It's all right to be better.
How many people he's not the best player in hockey too who don't live in Pittsburgh. If you don't live in Pittsburgh is there anybody who doesn't think of action he's the back to back MVP endlessly. Are there still hold -- outside of Pittsburgh who suggested Ovechkin is not the best player in hockey. Com I guess the only the only competition will be Crosby right. In my mind he's debt and outside of Pittsburgh and I think most people would say he's won the MVP the last two years in a row right. And makes him the best player in hockey.
Well let it means he's. He's the best player in the regular season I mean. Do I do -- it reminds you that Joe Thornton won the MVP in this in this league to a few years ago. And people here student that he was the best player and hockey even when he won -- that people forget that Joe Thornton is as Alexander Ovechkin Vietnam exhibit a it's an MVP I mean he's the best. Well two -- in a row via a did you do you think of the keys that much better than Crosby.
He did nothing as big as you know I think he's got a call no I think he's better I don't think there's this gulf between them. I nickel back in his is a more complete package. I mean. I think Crosby as it is is stronger faster slower here and Crosby's much more of a finesse player. You know where where Ovechkin can do at all I mean that he would PE through on recchi perfectly clean it by the way. I have no problem with Chara responding in -- a pristine make good for him. But there was nothing wrong with that -- and -- just flew back about eight feet before he landed. He if you wanna play physical he loves that part you -- skate he can do that he might have the best shot in the game he's got the whole thing.
You know what this is I'll -- it was scary and open do with the opener and losing a game in front of you know seventies I've seen 565 that's fine that's fine but -- the the the problem is. Before there's one thing about a Ovechkin. There was one flaw if you wanna call it that in his game and that was. When he faced up with when he went up against Zdeno Chara. He can be neutralized. Now. Who wasn't last night now. So that's a little scary. Chara was because was one of of twenty guys well nineteen -- won't come back up goaltender. Was one of nineteen guys who didn't play well last night -- and how would they go you know last year I don't think the Bruins would have been afraid of of the caps in the playoffs. Because of that history because of that -- over etched in history but now. It looks like in -- that the back to back MVP. Looks even better to me.
