Is Randy Moss Dogging It?

There was a story that came out yesterday. And doubt and as it came out it didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. And then as it played out it may -- even less sense to me but but to give you that the bumper sticker version here Mike Freeman writing on CBS sportsline dot com. Wrote a column and I stress that a column. In which guy he was at Gillette Stadium on Sunday he claims that he watched. Randy Moss on every single offensive snap. That the that the patriots had on Sunday and and basically. Again shortening this up. Said that that Randy Moss was dogging it. That he he didn't even try on half the plays and try to block jaw and beans on some plays. And said that he was dogging it later on the afternoon Mike Florio -- really like a lot. From pro football talk dot com added to into the gathering came up with 73. And and basically the premise was that that want maybe the reason Randy Moss is dogging it. So that the patriots released him. So that he can go sign with Minnesota and play with Brett -- Awful -- her birthday and I try to just figure out exactly how you get there. I mean what what what Randy Moss have to do. To get to the point where the patriots would would release him I mean he's their best wide receiver by far. Their second most important offensive player what -- would he have to like like punch Bill Belichick in the nose to get released what you have to do.

Bill would say you know it it's his background not a target -- they can't help but you know Holcomb. Randy didn't mean it is misunderstood. -- and there's another -- get it yet at that now not only do their best receiver. Not only is he off to the best start of his career. Get to 26 catches in three games. He also it is it's one that is in most ways except -- entry if that's what it's and -- spurs game and last game than for the middle against the jets. -- you've got a mutual. Admiration society going on with Tom Brady you -- that Tom Brady talk about Randy -- and Randy Moss talk about Tom Brady. It's it's pretty amazing. That. May be Randy Moss -- once upon a time. That he would enjoy playing with -- Brett Favre. That was once upon a time he was an Oakland raider who want to get what you want to get away from Andrew Walter you want to get away from Al Davis. Since that time since the whole Brett Favre Randy Moss thing. I know people have paid attention but he had a 23 touchdowns he's just -- pretty -- and NFL record. Playing with Tom Brady and then the following season when Brady is gone. It's still. Atop a great --

If you think about it if if he was gonna -- it be wise one last year have been the -- know Brett Favre was in Minnesota that's Florio's point. I I mean Tom Brady's hurt done for the year. If anything I saw mosques. Become more involved. I mean he was he he was practically. The ML Carr with pump bombs when the defense was on the field I mean yeah he was trying to do more not less a year ago.

Let me ask you this okay -- this is something that Randy Moss has had to deal with. In his entire career people saying that that he's talking in it yet he has alligator arms. I personally witnessed some alligator arms and dogging it in an NFC championship game. -- isn't with Minnesota on the giants could brush and at giant stated yeah -- that that game in Kerry Collins. Had a game for the agency was great the giants obviously play very well in Minnesota. Just -- I'm prepared and I'm motivated in any any other onion dis word you can come up with they were. But. Not my question is this Korean. Think of who are here right now you're your top five receivers and openly. You'd have to say. Larry FitzGerald -- is on that list to -- Andre Johnson an analyst now yes I would. Would would you put -- got to put Randy Moss there yes. -- still there are. We're probably on the outside. Steve Schmidt Steve Schmidt might be there. Calvin Johnson is Calvin Johnson the timing is Anquan Bolden yet to -- got a hard one but in those guys. Does anybody. I guess and here's a challenge for anybody who's who's concerned about a player dogging a player taking plays off that's become a cliche and football. I just for receivers pepper. For a guy. Who is is controversial or guy that that that people watch all the time and so he takes plays off. Everybody takes plays off for everybody baker talked about the as yesterday everybody does but -- my assignment for you know football writers like. Mike Freeman is this. Do that exercise -- Larry FitzGerald the same thing you it would Randy -- Duel with Steve Smith the with a watch a receiver. The entire time he's on the field Hines Ward -- And you're gonna see some things that you don't you don't quite understand. It's not always dogging it. Some receivers are going to be. They're going to be taking you and they're going TB. Seemingly going at at at a slow pace before putting on the burners and and trying to trying to surprise the defensive back but nobody. Is that that reckless pinball. The entire game I don't think anybody for bought as a.

In fact you lead us pretty naturally to Bill Belichick cut number two slavery and he plays his his playing style. You know he he's a long. He's long in his long legs and and he doesn't turn him over real fast like. Wes Welker Troy Brown or somebody who's who's quickly yet. Takes four -- five steps and and Randy takes maybe two steps and they cover the same amount of distance so. Provision look at Randy and you just don't think he can run. As fast as a shorter guy whose turn over quicker but then when you watch the guy run with them. You know you can't keep up -- so. He he's got a deceptive gate and I think that that his change of pace is hard for for defensive backs to read it it's hard as a coach sometimes to read. I mean Bill Belichick when it a pretty good detail --

just yesterday a much better explanation and him a much better description that I that I gonna come up with but I agree and and here's. Here's the thing that really that -- did it for me -- Randy Moss. Because a lot of us had watched his career but didn't watch his career close right we watched his career through highlights. Lights and it highlights low lights and an occasional national game even if you have the package. The U. You spent a lot of time watching -- raiders football probably not here but he's been a lot of time watching the vikings vikings probably not but. His first game as a patriot told me a lot.

Ers game regular season game in New York -- not to be the spy -- game. And he's running and it doesn't look like he's running that hard. But he got five guys Jason caught up. As an impersonal to -- behind that to get behind the second guy behind the second. Everybody in the secondary. The ball comes to him and they are really look at that that that that first touchdown of the pay tree right five guys after. And he's like a gazelle is just is the sloping. Strides. But he's going fast. But it doesn't look like it because so effortless forum. And I think people confuse. Effort less with lack of effort it just does things smoothly very easily easily great. Athlete. And and it's it's really tough to. Compare him to anybody else there's not a receiver like him and in football and I think he's the best receiver in the game I'm just saying there's no one. Quite like -- maybe Calvin Johnson comes closest.

But the other guys you know. Larry FitzGerald is squatting here right there in the Randy Moss. Andre Johnson's -- speaker. Not taller but just bigger thicker -- there -- a lot of guys you know 64. Close to 65. Run like that -- have their body type.

Well as I said I I. We talked about this early this morning when we were first discussing this whole thing and I'm always a little hesitant because I think Mike -- pieces choke. We almost give -- more credibility by even talking about it. Mike Florio's follow up is an even bigger joke in that regard. I I think Florio has more credibility for me and Freeman doesn't these two things he just makes up a totally wrong assumption out of this whole thing. At what point did anybody think that Randy Moss wants to be out of here. I mean you know he didn't have to re signed here. Now okay -- no Brett was gonna end up in Minnesota -- plate. Lori let's say you're apartment and he didn't LET. He resigning here. It wasn't looking for every last dime and nickel he could get he liked what he saw here both when Tom Brady was healthy obviously. But the whole atmosphere he's a leader here. And and I bet that in in places they might have but there's no way in the world the -- as captain Trevor thank you say that I didn't. Now I I mean. He has become. It's funny you watch on the sidelines and it's it's almost easier to do this when your at the games this TV they show once in awhile. Yeah Brady are attached at the hip when the deep fences out on the field. I mean the first thing Tom does is he sits down. -- that the offensive coordinator and -- looking at pictures and and the minute the offensive coordinator gets up. Rated. How this ever got into anybody's head that that Randy would sit here and look from a far it's.

Well I'll tell that the receiver story in New England that's not quite as sexy as Randy Moss is dogging it so we can get out of town to go to Minnesota. The real receivers story here I'm sure Mike Freeman. Norm might Florida not when those guys let's talk about this story that is. What do you do with that third receiver spot because Joey Galloway. Right now. Looks like he'd -- it looks like he's done I don't think he is actually big Joey Galloway. Is close to turning the corner and honest not a popular opinion here -- the key is close he had eight he had a bad game. Against the jets. He had he had a bad game against the falcons to. Because he is just a step off.

Took a couple of just. Just a couple of inches away from from making -- literally on Sunday was a couple at just the way. From making some big play -- I think it's gonna turn around form where I would agree with you is is in this regard and you said the key phrase here the third receiver. Unfortunately right now he's been the number two they're asking him to be the number two receiver with Welker on the sidelines. And I don't think he's been very good at it I mean that's not talent tales out of school he hasn't been very good at a think about think about the patriots offense when you've got Randy Moss Wes Welker and Jabar Gaffney. Joey Galloway is Jabar Gaffney. That's who he needs to be on this team and maybe this weekend you'll get to be that guy again. You know when moss is getting his attention over here -- well you're getting his tension over here. All of a sudden Joey Galloway. -- looks all whole lot different to yet he looks a whole lot more open. And and I think things change a lot. The minute he stuck into that different position right now Julian Edelman is not taking Wes Welker is place he's not the number two. They're moving Galloway into that spot -- is in effect taking the three spot where I think Galloway would be better off I think he could be fine once they get everybody out there.

people have -- for a long time the fact is is a little stranger than fiction and I agree with them. You know you couldn't even draw this up it would be too corny if somebody made up this story that on the same day that. Joey Galloway can't get its feet together in the end zone in and blows a touchdown. Greg Lewis former patriot cut by the patriots in training camp. Makes. So far of the catch of the year in the NFL. Which leads us to a Y eight Galloway over -- discussion but. I can't believe it's actually a legitimate question because you can't convince me even now at this stage of his career he can't convince me that Greg Lewis. There's a better receiver --

They spun on what we've seen so far from Galilee I think you could make the argument you may be right long term I mean long term the rest of the season not years down the road. So far Joey Gallo has been pretty. I mean he had yes. You know -- footballs that that he's got to catch. And I don't mean heart that one at the two yard line is a pretty simple -- now and say that that's a simple I'm not up yet pop -- but you know what you gotta make that catch.

Yeah out of out of the simple it's not a simple place. You know a great receiver very good receiver makes it I don't think he's played poorly there's no doubt about -- he's he has not been good. What I don't think he's a bad receiver.
