I fully understand that in the world of professional sports there's no such thing as a moral victory. What does what does solution is don't count just w.s and -- What you heard Terry Francona mentioned -- there and I guess all things considered. One moral victory we can take from last is that Paul Byrd. Native furtherance of the shocked shocked at all bird actually -- third. At the the first inning yet if I get a long way which guy's gonna last longer this game thinking or bird. It. Let you know that's that's a good nickname for quite yet all -- named -- elected eagle -- Right now the ever on national TV. -- and knowledge base that thing on green trying to bill got a method to thank god. You're here. And knowledge base for Zack Greinke if you don't have the baseball package then why haven't why would you want in city royals. Is the All-Star game sports highlights. The Red Sox sentencing this guy two years and collectible cards began thank god. That he.

deficit that he's he's he's all they have remember at the -- way -- beginning of the season away away back. In April. Try to figure out who that surprise team is going to be in baseball -- at the National League or American League but focus they -- to allow that they have the city. And I -- I wanna make case for Kansas City. But I look at them no matter how many ways and look at them in a cross my guys. Old -- the -- that highway there there's no way you look at Kansas City and say. Yeah I see them in a winning 88 gained 87 games sneaking a wild -- like that now that this. I am often. Except for rank and Greinke is -- I mean nothing nothing that you really think you know and I have. Love to have that guy on my team. Had a guy like that in camera -- Ramon bear this.

Yeah I was I was thinking about Greinke Tuesday I mean to the royals credit and and intelligently. They wrapped this guy up long term signed him to a new deal I think I heard -- say last night he's under contract through the 2012 season. The exact ranking -- type -- pitch here through 2012.

Don't turn it around though they will get it turned her house stop that they will eventually it will. In between now and 2012 yet this is this 2009 okay not a lot of time but. -- Dayton Moore I believe in Dayton Moore never met the guy in my life but would know if you -- absolutely not. Absolutely well that's why have a lot of faith and a big game James said in my -- The John Schuerholz guy that's why he was in Atlanta for a long time and John journal that a great job -- the Braves. So on taken over by osmosis. -- war's got to be pretty good. Right maybe.

Maybe I I I just think he's got a certain. A certain large set of handcuffs -- that's out there that. Well probably make it'll difficult I mean I you can be the best pick whoever you think is the best general manager in baseball. For the sake of our discussion will say will say the for the sake of argument. You stick in Pittsburg -- limit to how much he can -- you stick them in Kansas City there's a limit to how much he can do there. You know maybe catch lightning in a bottle for a year and yet and yet. At least compete for a playoff spot that division title but long term you got no chance.

Well -- but look at the guys look at look at the guys and in places that don't have huge payrolls. That some of these guys have been able to do a pretty good job I mean last year at Tampa's payroll not that high. They go to the World Series. Were talking about the twins. They continue to charge toward the American League central crown. Payrolls not that high you can and and they said goodbye to Santana -- say goodbye to some pretty talented players decided that. They're gonna take a pass on David Ortiz the -- happening and what Hugo Minnesota so. -- that have been talking about the best gentlemen I did the best general manager in baseball whoever that is whether they give Brian Cashman the -- Whoever. I think the best GM in baseball can -- to. A bad situation. And maximizing. Whatever that -- maximize and maximize right if so do you get the most out of it whatever that means look at in Kansas City maybe. -- the maximum is 87 -- maybe.

We had this discussion the other night and and you and I talked with with Peter Gammons about this last week. About whether or not a salary cap in baseball the only one of the four major sports that doesn't have one. Whether a salary cap in baseball would level the playing field but that's that's that he dropped to get the stat of the day off comedy teams have been on the World Series of the last fifteen years or something -- them now.

I was the last those thirty of the -- when it as high as thirty. And he said you know baseball and football on and on baseball football basketball football. Haven't come close right the matching the the diversity of champions that baseball's --

Well the question I think becomes if if you have a level financial playing field.

Do you think that it would be different baseball with the Red Sox and the Yankees the the big money team yes would would basal till the ahead of everybody all -- I don't think so. Would they be ahead of everybody else like they are now know. If you had a cap. Etiquette like big big you would still have a team executive and in football. You have a cap there's still some teams have no chance because they're down. And then their teams that despite the cap. Continue to be successful Pittsburgh New England -- Indianapolis right over and over. These guys they just you just expected they base out better than everybody else. They have stable ownership. They have good players. Because of their scouting and outcome of their trading ability. So at a cap limit them to a degree but you know they're going to be successful. They have teams like before last year the cardinals. This history of losing yet teams like the jets. Have a history of mediocrity. Yeah I mean you look at them look at the jets in the cap era you despite. Having not unanimously terrific coaches just being mediocre and -- some teams that. Are are are gonna operated a high level.

proponents of the system currently in place in Major League Baseball would make the argument that with revenue sharing and luxury tax. You would affect have a cap and you're taking money from the rich and giving to the pork which is sort of what a campus boasts that it got help level playing field. The problem we have is that the the owners of the teams who were receiving this money. Are under no obligation to sync it back into their franchise. And that was always the argument Minnesota for instance where he had a billionaire owner. Getting money that under yankees and Red Sox and you know that that happens. Not think it any evidence of player development and scouting and an all at stopping just sticking it of the bottom line.

That was terrible and I guess gonna have a cap in baseball that's just not gonna solve the problem -- to say here's a salary cap. I get to do it like football doesn't have a salary cap there's a salary floor you must spend -- about here. Oh we are going to divvy up the pie. When it comes to a TV contract. But. Don't sit there. And and -- and you don't have the opportunity to make money when we know exactly how much money you're getting we're getting the same amount and we're able to be successful what's your problem.

Or for city you're talking about how the Kansas City Royals don't stand cheated and they they want ten days and that's the -- so I guess I know -- the last night let's be honest we sort of ball to Paul blast -- except I wasn't -- because they hadn't made some this year and now we're you know they they they were shut down just like everybody else had a chance to see. And I can't I got what I've seen bits and pieces I haven't sat and watched him -- game before last night. I can't I can't call a single time this year where I've had the chance to watch him pitch and I haven't been on they've got -- don't. No I'm out of them but on the fox game and a little or no other band is it just purely package that game James can you think of them bearing on and I have not been ESPN and the one time they played the Red Sox just for the All-Star break was higher missed him. That was the first time I've had a chance to just sit and watch him for. Ali's great he is everything you got your side of the -- got he's got everything go on foreign. Tito talked about it after the game and we'll talk with Terry Francona about it at twelve on Tuesday. I mean that's a pretty impressive pitching packaged it.

It's impressive -- you know what Zack Greinke and the Kansas City Royals have done after winning for the you know second straight nine. They have totally. That totally is broken down a debate about wild card versus division. I outings can be very difficult for its gonna take a miracle for the Red Sox to win the division now on the Heather opportunity the other night. When the bullpen blew up the Yankees lost to the angels OK now your charging toward them but you lose that game. You lose last night the Yankees went there's just not enough time -- not enough time not that not enough games head to head with the Yankees for the Red Sox ruins of this.

I think I agree with -- and and I think that's why two nights ago was so frustrating when you -- to six run -- and kicked it away. My whole premise my whole hope going into the weekend. Would you go to Yankee Stadium within three games in the loss. A three game series at the stadium you know you've got it in front of you where you've got a chance. Now the schedules still favors the Red Sox dramatically they broke this down on NASA last night where they showed. The the aggregate record of the of the opponents the Red Sox are facing and I'll buy that. I -- I don't I I think the Red Sox Havanese your record and I think they've got too big a hill to climb I don't think it's gonna add.

I don't even played a game anymore I mean look what's happening right now but -- two weeks ago we're looking at the series in Kansas City you're saying within four games in Kansas City. One start from Greinke they should win three out of four in Kansas City at least shouldn't say. Well that's not gonna happen so I don't like to play the -- game because it never works out the way you think is going to unless you -- about.

If you if we ask it off the -- smart asses -- you'll be shocked that. And we were wondering if the Red Sox were trying to idea patriots were trying to corner the market on purchases in the NFL and Michael asked the perfect question. Look like that's that's at this Friday that's why they play making bird. I'd just one connection without acquiring the last -- you've got to have the wrong guy. We get out all we -- we -- our provoke it was Scott we -- again now they've got another Burgess now linebacker. Probably start at least as special teams -- this weekend he's been a special teams performer in Baltimore. Especially the -- help right now in returner. Yeah but there -- college teams were pretty bad to anywhere but they were they're -- against a the first two weeks of the season.

They have gone up against some pretty talented returners Milliken buffalo Buffalo's got a -- Specially Leodis McKelvin. Thank you Leodis but he's gonna get Mckelvin in the for buffalo and then it would but the jets of course Leon Washington. So yet. I would expect I expected. A big return not a touchdown -- a big return one of these games. But they really need somebody. Who can just be counted on in the kick return game it is cute that if you think they're searching doesn't. This circuit for somebody is that going to be. It is -- gonna do this full time. Is that what you.

Well and got leftover Welker we were talking about it not -- inning -- a wide receiver may be -- punt returner was huge part of the of the loss on Sunday as well is the -- correspondent for the first round at all the kick return unit drafted running backs in the first are gonna be returning.

Rick I'm sure he will be greatly -- I also believe on one of the few people left on this island I think. That I think he could be although I don't believe you ever be a full time running back. And by that I say on Michael Turner -- there's no way in the world he's not gonna. -- 300 plus carries won't be. Adrian Peterson he won't be LaDainian Thomas and I don't believe so. Let. They give you put them out there if -- give them fifteen. Touches a game. Can be a very effective now.

just -- one running back any running back he's just such as organic. -- guy I give Kevin Faulk fifteen touch and I don't care who it is just somebody. -- yeah I I I've read with the interest the comments from bill Belichick's. Conference call yesterday. And he talked about the lack of the screen game for instance and he said it's just not there against the jets but. That the patriots. The patriots have been able to do that sort of thing especially with Brady and fought against anybody. Last night it was funny on not ESPN two you know they had in the NFL's greatest games right. And it was the patriots Indianapolis. On AFC championship game in 2006. In Indianapolis for the patriots had a huge lead and squandered it did you watch it. I didn't watch the game I watched all the stuff leading up to the game because it in their attempt to tell the back story. They showed the the patriots colts championship games here for into playoff games here in the bad weather and and yelling -- Teddy on -- and Rodney talking about young being new. That that you know they could do stop against the colts and and and Teddy actually it was funny because he was talking about the game that they lost where. They finally go to -- and and the colts finally and he says you know I gotta admit. The kind of impressed me because I didn't think they had a bit of -- tonight I didn't think that that they have been and he is talking about that's drank that. Intestinal whatever. And I think it patriots team doesn't say well she -- screen against the jets six -- were screaming. Stop but if you --

I don't know I don't know that patriots team does that now and I wonder why you. Wonder I wonder -- Belichick feels that way it went right feels that. The screens are apparently went out of his way to say you know I'm not saying you can't -- the.

Why -- actually things you can to a he used to of that target to -- then it hears that you can't do it -- say if you do it your foolish because it's. It is really. I mean it's it's it's it's a moot point you not going to be successful. I -- wife feels. That it can't do it where teams can do audiences.
