And our number four -- gonna turn our attention to basketball it has been our pleasure on a couple of occasions to have this guy is aghast on our program. He is the New York Times best selling author of Friday Night Lights you've heard of that three nights and Augustine and Tony La Russa joined us in studio to talk about that. And his latest effort is called shooting stars. It was co written by buzz this injure our guest and his co author LeBron James published by penguin press available in your book stores even as we speak. Buzz it's -- on Michael in Boston welcome back. It it -- Schroeder thank.
Is I was telling -- earlier this is an incredible book guy. I grew up in Akron so. I did how did. About that's what that. What the same before a year my sister went there for four years the issue with -- she registered in the family. How to how out of -- those kids -- what their four year and I had to get out of there I would the Firestone after that but. I was telling -- you got it you really got the city just a question did you live there I mean did you move there for a couple months for research.
Now I mean I would they're you know are the -- you know obviously. I was there a lot and I had been there before and I I. I like that and I like cities that are gritty and industrials have lost their industry you know when the great great. A higher capital of the world than I had the that the that the community and attempt to -- Akron. And offensive survivorship that I -- really enjoyed it is not a city that giving up at the that he could fighting could come back and nothing at the beautiful thing on that minor league stadium it's gorgeous. Trying to revive downtown and you know what. One of the great heroes in LeBron james' wife the actress and that's really reflected in the book. The with the great. -- that the state that the community. And you know people really want to say this is moved beyond the fact that -- with a great athlete -- I think that it can be part of of a yeah acrid your.
Obviously LeBron James is a talented guy and in -- he's got a he's got a good story -- wondering. How it came to be that you guys linked up for this project did you go to him did -- come to you how out of that story work for us.
But you know came to me the other idea football that I want because what this does not. The definitive autobiography I don't really consider it an autobiography it's not intended that way he will write an autobiography. Thirty years now when he had perspective on -- life and it career. I loved the idea that that this story with a beginning and and metal and and and and the story a little bit about the growing up when it's released story about. Meeting these sport it. Who became his Brothers on and off the cork who put up between victim and and a lot of -- bounds and -- the book of real. Beauty who became Canadian and an agent there we share the same book agent and an agent there's that looked well. The product you wanna do that we have the perfect guide written for a -- but I know we'll all regret about I -- it growing up. And we think he'd be perfect -- you know the -- went out of the old out of Akron Cleveland area and and you know with the at my audition them. I get for that okay it will probably put.
My modest partner Michael Holley has written a few books of his on and and one of his most recently his most recent was with Tedy Bruschi. And Michael told me when he wrote -- that the hardest thing for him was getting the voice. And I got the sense early on in your book you gave up on trying to get the voice you were still -- messenger. But you work you're putting and I and things like that like LeBron would say which were still talking like deal.
Well you know what I was and it. It actually was somewhat intentional walk around like talked about it. It is very hard country voice like that but I also think that I know I mean one of the reasons. Hired me was he one of the book to be distinctive. To be well written you know I have trust -- the writing with a lot more -- stamina would've been. At that my Helm book is that it will -- well let me make no mistake about it and it is up. And I think that probably weighed -- on -- picket at the beginning in the night that the Clinton got more more in the rhythm of the book in a true Michael that a pilot that. You know got -- better truck I think without adequate but the gold for both the -- would not too erratic it was completely but to try to do. Not a well written book with you know a good the narrative flow out but it's harder -- target Michael knows you know -- you -- right so you know. They're just went -- in there that I look at when they that the I like look I'm at all.
But you still got it dead and and the story is there and that in this story is. Is very interest and ask -- this buzz and I'm sure. The people of Cleveland have their Cleveland and Akron have their own idea. Of what they want this answer to be we know LeBron James has great affection -- northeast Ohio and Akron in particular. Do you think they'll have anything to do. With his future with the cavaliers when he's able to make a decision about where you gonna play next.
All the latest rumored he's gonna give the Red Sox who -- J. D. Drew now I don't know if that's not. And I would I would be old favorite that is you know probably lose the big city. In an -- of August oh we all knew that was an -- that. There's what I think and I got my opinion. I call -- last week and asked them any kind of wild and.
He doesn't Adobe really knows yet. You know we -- active. On the team I think Shaq is I think -- which really hungry for -- Because really difficult is very competitive Kobe's gonna ring without them and I think jackpot -- you know Kobe I every without you know. I don't -- did make me. I think we'll bondage jacked together a contract with them -- as well not going to be that art is not present in the middle. That they haven't had you know Mo Williams beat them a little bit more than -- the law they -- scoop up a little bit. I have a really interest thinking no matter what we have upon. And Shaq I think it will pocket the -- I think Philly. And the -- I think that we do and say I've done everything right and for the community. I've thought in the championship I love Aqua. It's only going to be my -- what Cleveland it's only going to be my home but what bond is an issue. And -- billion dollar actually look if you wanna is that the only great. You can do it is New York now if the -- of get their act together and not they will not. If it's -- on at a bunch of bombs with no supporting cast. Definitely warmer -- but the knicks the other team. I also think about work but then David Stern of the very clever. The pressure will be subtle but he really wanted the government. Yeah MBA and -- very wobbly you know you permits he'd be a bit who really has their -- that the people who are going and the knicks that we. Is it rhetoric and they're apt get better it is after.
I've always thought look that LeBron James was mature beyond his years both physically and mentally. And if you follow the narrative in your book it's not hard to figure out why the early days the death of his grandmother on Christmas Day for crying out loud and and almost having to raise himself as mom was out working and try to take care of the family is spec -- cut. And at one point in the book he said I just hope that these -- the -- wouldn't come where she wouldn't be there anymore. But he actually said it was his junior year worries started to look less like a boy and more like a man I'm archery ever looked like -- boy --
He looked like the boy when he was growing up I mean when you start applying what we shouldn't start. Which -- they UT because and welcome when he first met. These kids who on the cover of the book who became what others think it looked like it I mean. One of the itchy and cotton was a big little or that he was willing to deal with this policy was. I Grady. Pretty much looked like it. It up though at that point it great great talent by the time -- sophomore even look like it anymore about facial hair looked at 64. You know junior you -- what happened and then all the great in the -- and a lot of the book is. Is about -- that the how to cover Sports Illustrated. And the exposure he got and the effect of the explosion that he got what impact it had. On the scene that I think will prompt a rate and we cannot believe that what he feels that. How he was exported whether it was sports illustrator or whether it -- you'd -- whether it was in his own high school. You know and they.
It's funny because on the cover photo. He looks like he does now he looks like command little -- looks like a little --
And I didn't look at a time and security he didn't look like the I mean you know it it it's validating. He's about 67 now I don't know what he -- eighty feet -- but there isn't -- but that anywhere near the guy anyone sort of lifting weights that you're. I mean just as they look at least sculpture. -- But -- hit and you know what -- about the book what I really like it will help meet the do it to do that -- to never. Like oh with a loved the story and I love the fact that the -- one of the book to be as much about other people. As it did that it and I about the character of little -- a little it was a little -- you know that may be five feet as a freshman. I will people laughed when name on the article are. The voting with the -- Scotty at the you know can't insure the that went below would be. But the kid -- great fundamental -- unbelievable heart you with at a relentless work -- he believed this himself a lot of people. Did not and I think he's great inspiration that anyone hit an adult you know what you believe what you want to see if you're willing. The work that he is he had a great career university backward and it now I'm actually in Europe and all about the art. And all that well and all battered desire.
These guys they called themselves the fab four and this is before Romeo came in from another school and and it was the fab five but of the fab four here two of them came from from top background you talk about LeBron and you talk about Willie McGee. As far as cotton and -- little -- Solid middle class backgrounds -- fathers were around. I'm wondering these guys were so close and had this rule of sharing everything what there was -- whether it was candy. At their possessions they would they were a blood crew. Comes from a -- what you've observed buzz. How -- have been affected now 11 of those guys one of the four. Is filthy rich. Is famous. He has a job to do he can't. He can't share like he did before -- now how's that affect the relationship.
You know I honestly think it has an affect the relationship at all I don't think he is I mean you're near the proved to me. What he's -- about I was about friendship and why they were so. Patrol abroad you know -- at that -- would arguably getting more publicity and here aptly in these kids kept. And they're kept in that earth is that it Lullabot. -- No we we knew you what you look like little boy who spoke about air without they'll be arrogant about electing. Should not the chosen one your world brought a bit or will -- And at the end of the senior year you know he's kind of cheap contract with Mike you were apparently bought. -- laws well -- aircraft was put to be that the Mike got a contract that side I would figure at a weighted that the money and one might would be hard. I would forget. LeBron did not is that. Willie McGee yeah. What they've done and I've ever met with a good good football player -- that's would be better Howard Howard it will only get yelled but we don't have been -- Left -- walked on. -- the first hear what he what we did not want. And in math class. Well we'll lot of work that -- at the Willie. One -- Howard was a really really wanna go to Howard and what brought it -- Well now I don't think that many pick who is of the -- that. That would show that and the ocean water and England but the best part of the -- were released had -- that know what Obama. I appreciate the gesture and I love you but -- wanna build my own way in the world and I think it's true of all these is they're not. Looking for a handout they celebrate what brought success is that at a lot of there. -- in their own life that all anonymous I'd really done very very well and so -- is and Chelsea I don't think that any and what product banning them because he doesn't want his home -- busy and what these kids do. They knew you know like -- one year that you would going to be something something very very special.
I think the thing that surprised me most out of the book and I really haven't thought about it until you wrote it. And -- was the animosity from the black community because these kids went to saint Vincent saint Mary. And many people in the black community thought of that as the would not -- quotation fingers the white high school.
How does there's no question and they were they were they were -- to build -- well I want Akron called up well with all black basically. And the that would known as the sports powerhouse in Akron about football basketball and what is -- some that if you're black that's where you go and they were. Plated the go there at the that the they had made a pact that they would just -- it at the range between the developed that was when they were and they want to win a national champion air together that they come close with the shooting stars and they they get it for nine years in try to achieve that he. During the truly with a narrower but the book is. But anyway. They also debacle but it would little group typically four foot eight at that point. I get no -- from the coaches they looked adamant that yeah I liked it there are fundamental forget it you played -- and not in any common JV. And little proof that the people forget it I'm not thought about bottom on the -- and in the end of the votes have been aqueduct within the type doesn't matter. And about talent and LeBron and Williams -- on what the the beating it but you're crazy you're here. What are you you're probably on the book by both coaching staff at that look if if -- Bobbitt hit them the liberty. Because I don't compare I am not public and you know they said you made a pact is awful wanna one for all. And they go to in think B and the black community. Ever ever forgave -- they thought they had betrayed them they were aware that the coach who's Littleton whose father. It's been on the buck who they're happy with all the pimp by pimping for the white community. On the father should be on the vocal coach did a great great I will star in Akron you know that we move we will act now. And every game became a war one think he will play an active public high schools still going added in the book. Opposite that it it that the added that understand we know very different. I'm typical transition that they had to make what was basically an all white apple pulled -- bodies of five African where it.
And and the is thinking about it as I was reading your book was. Because I know every everything you're talking about his very familiar to me I'm wondering if it would have changed a bit. If at the time. -- Had an African American head coach this the part of the story that makes it even more interesting in and makes this story even more toxic is that. There -- the head coach of the time it at same three. Had a history as central Michigan and I'll let you pick it up from here that probably got people bristling to -- to that he went to play for that --
Well he let -- he will support her up about -- to. They have bought and I've I've gotten out -- I've spoken from a lot of what that the court record and what happened. A commission in the what happened was he used the Edwards who was players in the game against Miami of Ohio. Yes the player for permission to use it it's -- okay and and use any word in the sense that you know and but noted. That -- you know. There were -- popped up there won't play harder so you'd Edward and bella are more like -- and others that -- It was really stupid. It was really -- it he felt that it that it should have been fired -- what fired at him with a hundred Indonesia and there you couldn't they couldn't black ball. A basketball he's. Not racist in my mind he is not a bad man but he at this crowd over and but. You know he's got the -- and -- it was the only school literally the only school with countries that would -- It into the Atlantic director. And it what happened and that being grateful Wilpon who there was this it was incredible talent but law -- And think about it now being -- is the freshmen by 80100. In division one coach who really knew would even do. And -- a lot of the book about how you -- what brought it wasn't not well it would booklet. But I was we'll put this in at a -- out and and I didn't lit up what was more distressing for me was the resistance. -- that was there when coach drew who was after African American became coach. There's no question that there were people at saint Pete which is the very cute little who in a lot of African American coach is there -- No and that was very very hard or who -- This -- that everybody was looking over his shoulder waiting for him to fail.

Well I -- my first round pick in everyone at microchip fantasy football all the other owners but it would in my mind but I think he'd be pretty good actually. But. I was shocked that I did I come out of the jets for real.
Yeah it might be there might say they they -- they were not to seven last year and then they didn't particularly like the coach. At the end of the year so they might be they might be a pretty good they've got a question for you there. Did you ever have a -- burger.
