I mean nobody saw that thing come -- last night did -- nobody saw coming. It was a he -- it was a good it was it was an exciting game it was that okay give that it was an exciting game but in terms of good football for the patriots.
They got a little. Non non non.
Way to go before they can be considered. The best team and and a I may we got to Peter King yesterday said he thinks it is the best -- football a lot of people said that. Even before yesterday's game I was I was skeptical that the best in football because of the different but these and many times. But -- after last night. Yet I mean that is the that is the number one problem the -- Even more so if Jerod Mayo is going to be hurt for any type of for it for any length of time and then the and the other thing is dale. I'll update the offensive line we never even thought about the -- before.
Light. -- asked you yesterday -- this is it that way you've got beat up he was that he in the plate top with his elegant they're both of them. They both -- been hearing that's. By the time I got home there was a couple of things I really wanted to look at last night. I wanted to -- the two erupting via quarterback penalties that's I want to see if they were ridiculous on TV if I thought they were. Here in the stadium once in the last couple drives. So -- even -- spotlight with play in the entire night according John.
Yeah but but Matt Light. Disguised as -- Was just was not ready for the season I don't know what it is now -- I hope it was at a concentration issue. I hope it was something like that because if -- if he's really if this is a talent thing. Mayor Tom -- in trouble.
Well it was interesting because light was then and I don't know how much of this they talked about on TV he was used in a lot of weird different ways last night. He was he was an eligible third tight end on a number of occasions. There were times when Sebastien Ballmer was at left tackle. And Matt Light was standing on the sidelines with the other offensive substitutions. I mean you get an -- it -- Houston and on the sidelines the puck kicked. It was ineffective. If it beats -- AP it's over their perennial like the time I'd agree with what he would stand there for a play and then he'd be back out again the fact that he was out of the game. House some well it -- but there were times when and and in effect they were going with six offensive lineman in when they would go with the three tight -- set. Either lighter catcher would would reporting is the eligible receiver but they just be a six offensive -- But then. There were taught that when they did that Ballmer would play left tackle. And then times yet they pull light off as the extra tight -- but Ballmer would stay out there reply and then light would go back in and replace Olmert it was a I I'm I'm sure I've never seen him use that way in my guess is he's never been used that way since he became a starting offensive line well.
That it is no excuse when he was out there in his conventional role left tackle for the patriots he was not impressive as a matter of fact. It was an impressive comeback -- for the for the patriots but overall. I think they would say this.
They can't play worse. While not the first half -- I don't think all -- that you know Tom Brady put and it right into Aaron -- Paul. Law a great catch by. Schobel and or let it play airport decision by Brady. Right between in the nine in the four on another occasion and thankfully Schobel dropped -- lots of lots of dropped passes. For the patriot -- defensively. Yeah reviewers saying this morning that you were impressed by Brandon Meriweather I can't find one guy on defense. On it's real defensive plays. Really jumped out of me and now back to those guys -- here today. Wilfork and Warren. Sentencing think that there wasn't really. A guy who stepped up on defense and had what you would consider a great game or even a very good game.
I mean I had that little sinking feeling in the pit in my stomach when six defensive snaps into the game. The guy who's been anointed as the next great defensive player is being helped to the sidelines in a few plays later is on his way to the locker room making that Tom Brady walk. He didn't look anywhere near as bad as Brady when he went off I mean he looked like he was actually walking reasonably well. But as is always the case down here we're all gonna hold our breath until -- policy play --
They ask one question you know how how seriously hurt it -- the -- seriously hurt. Mail we're talking about obviously. And if he's out for for two or three weeks what is the team do and we -- Tedy Bruschi here last night this is. That first test of that question Bruschi was asked at his press conference what happens if somebody gets hurt may call -- The answer the phone he said don't call. And -- and I'm wondering if the phone's gonna ring EA said don't call. But I think they'll be column and if he's now for a while they're inside linebackers out for a while he really like Gary -- in that role. You want Pierre Woods in that role inside linebacker night.
Looked a little a little lost last night now and interest and out of an audition and you know win win mail went down. Yeah actually saw a lot of Rob Ninkovich inside for awhile and then he got hurt and went down. So so they where they are portraits and -- the depth chart a little bit I think at linebacker. You know for a team that wants to play either 34 or 43 depending on game plan they might and they may not have enough linebackers to play 34 right now. It -- if this team means go back the last night. Was -- were disappointed. In their deep in -- in the defensive effort. Out of every guy that's effort performed at every effort to fentanyl or Y I you're you're exactly right the screen pass kill them. Running plays gash them a couple of times we talked about Fred Jackson yesterday. And he played great against this team a year ago -- a great again at times last night I felt like they couldn't stop them when they needed to. I felt like they could not stop -- but you -- bill that third quarter drive. The the drive that went to 2413. I mean it was methodical it was just marched down the field and and you just love it could make light of.
As -- lots of third down situations. Whether it was third and three -- in four or third and eight. Buffalo just kept finding a way to pick it up -- got to help. Are on a few calls not just in that final quarter but throughout the game they got some help. Well with some rules that we've grown a cup accustomed to as football fans but we don't necessarily like. They got help with you know -- is Thomas comes up with a big sack you think. Yet. It's a personal file because he wrestled the quarterback threw a piece of land the quarterback to the ground well.
that was one I really wanted to look at when I got home last because in the stadium I thought. And and I am I -- on replay it confirmed. Trent Edwards -- still movement he still drive and he's trying to get away from a -- Thomas. I didn't hear a whistle. Obviously Bayless Thomas didn't hear a whistle is exposed to let him go at that point but -- that was that was that was in the call I don't that the cardinals I don't think -- under the TARP note that the call was it. Hitting him after the whistle that wasn't -- say he he he didn't stop play.
I opted in to keep probe into the heart he he. The London on himself. Not not recognize the.
A body slam into the to the ground but I have problems with it -- I think he did exactly what they said he did but. I don't think that's your personal fault when a guy. A quarterback. Who is still at full -- trying to to get away from you and make a play and try to throw the football. I mean you're lucky we've seen so many sides of this thing is got to be very confusing. Four at defensive player. We saw the play -- it was Kiwanuka in Tennessee against Vince Young you kind of holds up because these things okay. They're gonna whistle the play dead. And I only called for any kind of personal file. Vince Young escapes. -- either rounds were touched down or rose one and time lines going crazy on the sidelines we know the Super Bowl play Eli Manning. He is is being grabbed you would think okay they call that went down they didn't. Eli Manning was able to escape. And richter right an -- were -- yeah. So last night what do you do do you just hold them up and you look at the officials won't say I'm gonna bear this guy's gonna blow the whistle. Or do you do what do defensive players instincts are bring god to -- He's trying to do it get away from me bring into the ground by any means necessary as always and I grab the space masquerading right.
While there are questions. At least. Back and forth gray area let's say about the Dallas Thomas -- there is no gray area for me on the Vince Wilfork one I don't understand that. I am I am I am I know that great role I know how to write I don't like it well I know the rate you'll hit a ground below Moody's. He hit him in the waste. And and Edwards is falling backwards has been hit him in his in his. Going backwards trying to get away convinced he hit him around the waist as Edwards falls backwards he slides down amid high. Which is wary Adam when he when he tackled him. That's just an all horrible call.
What happens -- these. At these rules committee conversations. These rules committee meetings but can't possibly like. The game going in this direction and then. They can't keep it can't possibly -- your football person a football fan. And I do understand respecting. Protecting the quarterback -- understand that that's the dad pays the bills and if you are if if the guy is out there running and he gives himself up you can't treat him like he's a running back or receiver. You have to. You have to treat the quarterback with kid gloves understood that when he's out in the open field but. If he's trying to get away from. In your in your tackling him you should be able to bring them down that's -- is Thomas call and in the case of Vince Wilfork. He's -- we have them around the waist. Any.
Brings them down. Way to go lakers -- in the flags flew here we're all yelling because we thought he called intentional grounding. I it was you know it was so clear watts that oh well it's intentional grounding he just trying to get rid of the football. And I I think we were shocked as Vince obviously was in Vince was dumbfounded when the call was against them.
Look at its amity. I'm looking at the rule book right now so -- And in looking at some of the definitions of of roughing roughing here's number one -- will be called. If in the -- judgment a pass rusher clearly. Should of known. That the ball had already -- the pacers' hands. Before contact was made pass raptors past Russians are responsible for being aware of the position of the ball and passing situations. The -- you to release of the ball from the pacers' hand. As is -- the -- now fully protect it what the path to release back passer rushing defender may make direct contact with a passer only up through the rushers first step. After such relief that's basically hitting hitting them late and I don't think that applies to help the next one does a year ago. A rushing defender is prohibited from committing such intimidating and punishing acts as. Stopping a pastor into the ground or -- necessarily wrestling or driving him down. After the passer mr. on the ball even of the Russia makes his initial contact with the pastor within the -- that it initiation provided above. When tackling a pastor was and virtually defenseless posture. Example during or just after throwing a pass a defensive player must not unnecessarily. Or violently. Violently. Throw him down and land on top of him with all or most of the defenders wait instead of but the player must strive. To wrap up or cradle the pastor. With the defensive players aren't so of the officials the fiscal. Absolutely they they blew this golf even if you wanna say this is -- football it's black football. They don't let men be men anymore the good old days when they wear leather helmets -- wanna go on. On the old bastard football -- which I support. Dad doesn't even apply in this case it does in the modern rules the way the game is called now this was not the proper interpretation.
I agree what should -- and I give you the Brady rule quickly I know we're up against the clock but the Brady rule which I think they missed as well. A rushing defender is prohibited from forcibly hitting in the knee area or below or below. A passer who has one or both feet on the ground even if the initial contact is above and it is not a file of the defender of blocker filed in the past we know that now he hit him in the waste. Yeah hit him in the midsection. And then because Edwards was falling backwards he slid down. I think he ever got to immediately.
No he didn't -- with all that said even though there were some some. Some questionable calls in those two questionable calls that infuriates you as a football fan. The bottom line is that they're gonna have to do something about this defense it is not a championship the -- can get to that point. Like based on what game you you would say hell no but you would base that on one out of sixteen especially not the first but they got you. You feel like there's nothing special about the defense at all it and confuse anybody think you know a lot of pressure. He didn't think there were there were no there are no big hitters they were no dynamic plays nobody stood out on the -- last that's scary.
A -- what's really cool about having. Peter -- living in Boston. Is that he can actually listen and correctness or not when we say stuff. It can listen but doesn't listen doesn't listen to the gallon knowledge of you think -- in Boston you're next on Sports Radio dale and Holley.
Listen I just wanna tell you that you're you're. Urinary tract is. The call and Vince Wilfork -- four. -- job. There's no question about it you'd you know the official -- play is being tremendously over cautious because remember one thing. In all the things that the NFL officials were schooled -- Particularly her referees because they're the ones in the backfield they're the ones who were trying to prevent more of these low it's on quarterback's legs. Which you know obviously if it -- Carson Palmer and then it happened to Tom Brady. So -- that's what they're being schooled to try to be careful and you wonder -- and why it was called last night but. Under any circumstances. The call was wrong because he contacted him at the low. It -- thought it might have been growing area you know -- first contacted them. But it was that the -- with it was mid it was not at the -- the player have to be able to defensive player have to be able to die. And it and it made the right to be able to take him down so that was the wrong call. However the daily comments. Roughing the Pepsi -- can be made. 99 out of a hundred times in the NFL her career and Hillary to eat through the quarter cracked down. That call been made it -- about the last five years. That that is spent a point of emphasis -- The quarterback they have I mean that comes from the old Turkey Jones current here reaper it shut down days 35 years ago when. I don't know who ever remembers that but that that that that kind of -- then they don't allow that anymore so. No matter what you know I had a thousand text or emails or tweak flatly -- game. How can they make these calls well they should not meet the Thomas called they heard it should have made the Wilfork called. We should make Thomas call.
Well I mean thanks and thanks for the clarification speeder but I it to me Alexander dale well with all that stuff said. This defense. Has a long way to go to gonna play like that man.
Court and no court in my -- and I might lose -- you we're market in the are part about it last night that you know until that last drive of the game. That -- getting the trance plate great and and you know I got the second period at some really good moments but. But tell you what for it checks and abuse those guys let bank upfront. And that they didn't get enough pressure on Trent Edwards -- having said that. I will say this I said that the current network last night that was the net gain of your career. Trent Edwards was a giant last night he played on a number eighty page any competed very well -- really have a lot admiration for for what he did it last night in you know what. For all this stuff about bill being. In disarray in the bill being can all that I mean the two guys who really distinguish themselves last night. We're Alex -- and help the play caller Trent Edwards they were absolutely tremendous and you know -- you what the it it'll be ashamed if it comes that it. But I guess I have so much admiration for Dick -- You know they're they're not as good as the patriots we all know that but last night for. You know for 55 minutes they were ten point Specter of the patriots in their house in Tom very first game back in. I mean that that ought to be contract what you wanna talk about but. You know like -- I -- got a lot of admiration for the bills come out of that game.
If people haven't had a chance -- to SI dot com read Peter's game's story about last night in which. You pointed out that Tom Brady told his teammates. They were gonna score before the two minute warning and there we're gonna get the ball back and score again and women and they went on debt.
Yeah and I. Are we -- told me that last night. I couldn't believe that many call over and -- open. And he said. What a twelfth in Ottawa or twelve of oak tonight. You know we'd like five and a half minutes ago and -- the repeated almost for eight. I mean -- look it's it's a funny story isn't like Brady. You know is is David Copperfield or anything or whatever to wear those -- but it's just. You know Brady. If it's it's great to have him back in the game because he can invent moments late word that it last night.
While it's a stand today to the guys and on the show force you know Dickerson and and Gerry Callahan says. They just -- when he when they went down to one reported thirteen agency Brady. In the way he reacted it was it was as if I -- even think there's going to be any problem. There -- they're gonna find a way to win now I mean that I know that's. That's -- making in this sense but the best cattle who Tom Brady is that I'm not surprised that he that he told his teammates historic the -- like.
I think that's what group. That's what -- is -- it's absurd but. That's what Joe Montana -- said in the huddle for the 49ers generation ago and that Tom Brady has become with its.
Thanks for a chicken and Peter from Boston we'll talk to you -- Friday. Art -- your card it Peter Taylor King a clarifying. So so he thinks that the Bayless Thomas Paul is going to be made 99% of the time. He does agree with us that the Vince Wilfork called make it justified now that's just blown call.
And they probably want and you know I've just been thinking a little faster. Maybe -- on Friday but. In in that situation. Maybe you should make some of these calls. Not not challenged not not challenged by coach because the coach who always challenge. Personal power -- or pass interference. What if if if an official makes a call.
Maybe that that's something that should be reviewed. And I'd just like a baseball guy says something that guy's -- he's not sure it's follower fair. And there's some there's some conference after that and they figured out. I think maybe they should be a conference situation never I'll play a call that it's that bad. And and can potentially could again and changed the game I think he should. -- below huddle up even if now on the field. But in the -- somebody should be able to you should be able to go back and say now we've really that's not the spirit of the trying to -- trying to do you're trying to. Look -- for that but that's that's not the right way to do.
