John Calipari, Kentucky Head Coach (2nd Segment)

Welcome back Dennis and Callahan we've been joined in studio this morning by the head coach of the University of Kentucky John Calipari has a new book out called bounce back. Overcoming setbacks to succeed in business and in life coach cal is revealed to us. In our first segment that he was under the covers for a while after being fired from New Jersey I'm wondering. A public cover to do what have to pull off a view after -- nine point lead with two minutes twelve seconds to go in the national championship game to Kentucky.

I get a today's just a quick story with that in the book at the end of it -- this week just finished that is it was going did you watch the masters Kenny Perry -- OK we all watch yeah. And you talk about fate -- intervening in our -- some of the good some of the bad I want to the university Kansas why. I'm from Pittsburgh -- their basketball camp by working their camp to don't song me and said I want to stay it's a volunteer position that you can stay. -- meet my wife in Kansas who have been happily -- with a 23 years. Well his thing is. He's -- it Cabrera hits it in the way we start texting he's gonna what do you to burst behind a tree he swings hard hits the tree. In a ball landed in the middle of the fair way it's supposed to go right it's what's not very well in our case I call Kenny and nice today. You know wanna talk to you about it and it he said gets kind of like -- nine with 212 to go how can I gotta go -- and so but. He said I wish I would've played a little bit better down mr. And I said and I wish we'd a made a free throw great. Which you know one fate intervenes indeed sometimes the ball was shot over hands hit a light when he and it goes over time and we lose. But because of the New Jersey situation was able to better deal with the night when he and and what about me was about everybody else is about my team they were devastated my staff and I think I was able to handle it he said ball Hala. Got him right. So we mean he's in 96 I had the same kind of lead took me three years to get over now and on going to be okay month and a half later Kenny Perry wins in Hartford.

He's not gonna win a major though I think he's always going to be haunted by that. -- I hope your time they have passed I hit because it age it may be -- when they're upset we're all root for that was too bad but that penalties gonna have a another chance like that. You know you've obviously Adam. The chance to redeem yourself and will be -- actually haven't -- you have you have to get back to that spot the national title on the line. Non net well and that's why you go to Kentucky and that's why go there.

Very lightly and I don't know I don't know we're -- this question if if Memphis was to step up from. UMass finished in new drew -- in between and Kentucky's a step up from Memphis what to step up from Kentucky.

I don't think I think that jobs and our profession. They're burning the most whatever you wanna says all our Notre Dame football. Would you say used to I don't know anymore okay Yankee baseball. You have to say. Austin rates of baseball. You have to say maybe Dallas Cowboys the Manchester whatever. And in England. Is there another one Kentucky basketball -- nasty football. Maybe and it did it's built into that now a means to light I think I've got one of those kind of position now someone -- media. Yesterday what if you don't make the NCA tournament what happens there. I said first of all lovingly these fans are crazy and now have for sale -- in my front yard immediately. Because there are put their value and not by me. Did you. Any inkling as to what Marcus Camby was up to at UMass and you can hear this question tonight. And it now probably when the street when you -- idea why didn't you know like -- what did you know what you're Olympics there's that I would say when Europe the head of an organization of business and you have a lot of stuff underneath you. You are responsible. When anything happens. When it's hard to be held accountable it's hard to be held accountable when things are happening. In their hometown or you know when Marcus his case in the city of Hartford in the summer in between at school it's hard. In all of the cases I don't ever want throat -- under the bus. You know the ads at the end of the day a response would just hard to be held accountable that you know he was up to solve the now you know absolutely -- And in the other thing in this. With him he -- he's a great kid stays in touch. One I would beg to differ as UMass salaam Nazis -- The Hague who cost you and the school. Its Final Four appearance well and it's not like it just like he just took cash to pay the rent from mom. I mean what he did was despicable and really selfish. Well you could say that but when you're talking about a nineteen year old when he -- 1800 dollars 1800 dollars. -- port now let me just say this when you open up your refrigerator. There's a Canaan corner and -- different than you and I opened up our refrigerator and say we spend money on 1800 dollars. You start -- million dollars now he's on lets him quote he's let it fool you -- include absolutely you know what there's no real excuse but here's what I'm saying. He made a mistake no question. He paid a price for was how steep a price do you think that went -- for their public this he gave the school back the money that they lost from the Clinton win he gave it back right away 150 by the -- She did this kid paid the price but you know what he moves on here's my thing and all this. My own children. Do some of the dumbest things I've ever seen in my life and you look at him and say. Where you from the -- com for my own children and let me tell I've done this along time. Mike players will do dumb things so you're never you -- man Marcus Camby. You know what I was disappointed. I was disappointed but you know one problem market -- And that's stuff. Yeah hole they learn from you hope like two isolated incidents okay those stuff you deal part of this book. It's about. Overcoming things that are thrown that you are giving example right now people are losing jobs. And they're -- for our well why would you get rid of your best performance. That guy who makes the most money. And we got -- cuts now it's now all of a sudden I walks and he's better. He's resentful we can't -- All you're trying to do I know I'm good enough to give back -- it was why do you do it. We talk about it in there in the book about you gotta be positive you've got to say next have amnesia. Next. I say take that Mir the rearview mirror your car rip it out angle fall. You come to terms with what happened you get out from under the covers you heard some news when you had bad news the first thing became EU. -- I mean you get -- and knocked it in all of a sudden it's like why me what happened what is. And then all of a sudden you sit around now good movement forward this is not gonna set me back. And that's what the book is -- that's what we're trying to get through.

John I wouldn't be doing my job of I didn't ask this question have you I'm of the accidental do you consider yourself to be a lucky guy and the reason I framed that way he has. You were able to leave you -- for better situation in the NBA. Before the stuff that the fans. The same thing and we can talk about what's happening at Memphis happened there are you were able to leave before that hit the fence are you well you guys are UA -- both.

Cases. We knew. Mike's thing with the New Jersey Nets I was deal with them way before the Camby stuff written and then I'll almost stayed in -- write about in the book because. I didn't know where was -- when we learned that the school had done their thing our staff had been done their thing right. And then I learned that that's one message in -- do this. The deficit and staying -- to ride it out yet not to make sure that I'm not leave in this thing in a way I don't wanna today. The Memphis stuff we don't know I mean you get the -- the president supporting me in all this stuff united. The people that garnered some critics and but let me say associating and you're responsible when you're the head of an organization. I will tell you in the -- ice -- with a clear conscience. I'm proud of our guys we graduated 80% of or players that you -- before I got there you remember what it wasn't it was about 15%. -- when I went to Memphis you ready for this for ten years. -- My last nine -- news. It's hard -- almost work and -- nine years we graduate 25 athletes when he fights scholarship athletes nineteen of our last 23. For seniors on last year's team all graduated on time in four years including. Antonio Anderson from and how the kid who took the SATs for Derrick Rose has he do -- On -- out what it once in the and I'm not gonna I'm not going to. -- again I can't I'm not gonna -- you know because of this you feel like history -- now because the the appeal. If what I think is the university has a great appeal. And I agree with what to do and I'm not screwed up like talking and you guys know -- I like to hold my tongue. I like to speak my mind and if I need to do say it's a semi sick this case is different let it run its course after that I'll tell. And speaking my mind was it unfair for the NCAA to -- UMass the record book again I'm gonna tell you there it's in an appeal and master volume volume -- The rules change now because of that case five years later they change and here's why they came back instead of the university. Did not know of the staff did not know we will moment vacate. Five years later it's happened to other schools the same exact thing the same exact money a bigger name. And they were not vacated why does it in now. But when we did it it was cut and dry when we went through that in 96. That if it happened there's no it doesn't matter if you knew or not it doesn't matter if you did everything to guard against that which we did. We had people come in and talked to about agents we talked to -- and we did everything we could be -- one again. It -- dumb things in 1920 years old do you think here in invincible you think you're indestructible you can do whatever. Sometimes they don't understand this and I try very hard with my team Kentucky what you do affects everybody. Infection teammates -- affect your family and I have them I give them apart now but it didn't that you messed but I give them cork. Before they do -- on the court there's three things. Will I embarrass. My family. Will this embarrass me and will this embarrass my teammates and coaches. And if that you have any yeses there don't do and boy that's one test Marcus came it would taste it but I guess across the --

Let me let me -- really -- one two part question. Is building a program which is what you were a master at at the same set of rules no matter where you war and how does that apply. Now that you wanted to university Kentucky where you have gone from medium high heat to high heat.

Well it does that mean you you've got to walk -- in in relief. Depends on where the programs the programs I've taken over -- in them. And so even Kentucky. For them and ninety is down right. You've got to go in in in and start to change the culture of how you do business you get a set standards on what we do. You got to make sure the young people know what you. Except in what is not acceptable. And then you walk that line and you make sure war. -- consistent and fair with what you do. And I think you walk in with that you don't put in standards will win in national titles. You put in standards that were gonna change we're gonna get better wouldn't go data -- we're gonna live in the moment. We're gonna make we're gonna create our own happiness I'm not -- read with someone writes about me good or bad. And have that create my happiness or my teams and you gotta go in with that idea but if Kentucky. This stuff is it a whole. I mean it's you know our fans and I say eleven they're crazy. I mean I I want to pipe wielding it like 67000 people their 1500 showed up then. Where you're recruiting in the same places as year old friend Rick Pitino has not plunged not much well not much would not aide and editor they want us to beat those guys so bad I'm like you people what -- we lose to global. By fifteen. -- win a national title you look at that people say oh we're not okay. And so there are -- but is it got tougher for pitino. Since I don't know myself I have not spoken here in the last month or so. But I think he'll he'll do fine I mean it's you know he's in in a tough situation but it defined. What was he gives up the Italian food --

When you walk out of recruit tells what what what's the ones that you want. Mom and dad if the both that are in the -- to remember just the one the one thing you wanna hardest place you can go and play basketball. Is with us because you gonna go to every class she gonna do that -- tutorials you're gonna go to study hall. You gonna be on a team with other good players you gonna train physically could you gotta be in the best shape your life you're gonna be given skills. They're gonna add to your game if you wanna play at 23 zone and walk it off -- not come in with me. If you wanna challenge yourself and have the bar raise them then you come with me I hope when I -- they say well if you wanna go there it's not going to be easy. Most of the beginnings -- just that seem to apply to mom and dad supposed advocate. Well I don't talk education I don't talk at once they leave the room yeses you know going -- the I'm gonna get your of the NBA title what I think I'll tell -- it and fathers and I've recruited -- if I go in and with the mom and dad yeah. I'm barely speaking to the day. To the mob -- yeah yeah mom and I -- gonna have a great relationship talk about how we're gonna. Deal with her son in what her son needs and that he looks at that says if if a man Ashley Judd. You -- that for a -- that he's right here in Boston -- I can't believe -- haven't -- he was going to -- we get Barnes & Noble at 1232 prevention right and into the -- were going to the -- becoming the best I don't think -- welcomed there they -- have you and I like -- You know those letters -- I was looking for money. Right in the trash. But we have that tonight and come on I'm excited because I'm gonna meet a lot of the alarms in the people that are excited I mean they're excited about Derek Kellogg right now. You messed up today -- gonna get it done he's recruiting but he level he's home his wife's home. Got his little baby backs I mean there -- all he's excited he had an opportunity. To leave UMass last year for double or triple the money any state as you said this is where wannabe this is where -- coach.
