I know Tom Brady said this morning when he was on with the DNC he's been around this game long enough and been around this team long enough that nothing really surprises them. Well that may be the case for Tom Brady but I will admit Sunday when I found out that Richard Seymour had been traded to the Oakland Raiders I was shocked.
Of course and he probably was shocked to -- I guess is a follow up question for Tom. If he still listening and of John and Jerry. Don't mind -- Colin back in for patriots Monday park to park on the Galen Holley show it. Yes I do have another agenda to get Tom Brady to call him. Tom when did he get to that point when he wasn't surprised. But what was happening in the national football it with this team. With the patriots was it the lawyer Malloy -- release in 20035. Dates for the start of the regular season with the Deion Branch in 2006. Right when you thought that the patriots were gonna come to some agreement -- branch. And then it was just the opposite they authorized his agent to seek a trade -- wound up in Seattle. And we do and we know that Tom Brady and Deion Branch had a nice relationship at least on the field. I mean when women get their point when he wasn't surprised with a 2007 when he threw fifty touchdown passes today. On that prepared to test -- with the acquisition of ready mop never -- months ago marking what I don't know I just let. I can't imagine. I know Tom -- a huge sports fan in and obviously a pretty big football fan I can't imagine he wasn't surprised when he heard the news that Richard Seymour was not only traded but. But traded to help.
Effective is it fair to say. That Bill Belichick took advantage of the age apple Al Davis in this deal no. No I don't think so I really deal I truly do I don't think there's another. Owner slash GM in the NFL who would have given the first round pick. And I don't in 2011. I think so I got picks actually more valuable the next.
It might be but listen you have you have. Owners and owners you have general managers now and coaches. We're willing to give up first round picks for the opportunity to trade back into the draft for the unknown. So that in other words separatist go to that other patriots got mail ever just go sit we will give you. Our first round pick next year for the opportunity to take Joe Staley this year. I don't know that's its name it's not that the ones -- because I use we know they'll just -- okay. So that the colts have done that the ravens have done that people have given up first -- for the I've -- so in this case. I'm I'm sorry. Still. The best defensive -- the patriot -- with all respect to events and I -- hardy had her hat. OK a yes or no question the best offensive lineman in team history to give up a first round pick to hear from.
Here's the problem with the dealers IC and and this is one of those deals that the more I thought about it Sunday. The more I thought I both love and hate this. I hate the deal for this year. I mean your patriots fan. No one can convince me this team is better then it matter that they don't know -- works they got where they got worse for this year at I would love to hear of the debate on. This year how did the patriots get better this year with a straight -- up. I would love to hear somebody make that case now say they got worse for this year and if you're a patriots fan and all you care about his team back into the Super Bowl and maybe winning a Super Bowl. Your chances are are lesser less today than they were.
I couldn't agree with you more I'd love to discourage barricade and and the the head coach just made that job more difficult for himself and --
Now at the same time. We thought all along they work going to be able to keep -- Vince and Richard we thought all along that there was a pretty good possibility one of those guys. What's gonna walk at the end of the year. Evidently they've decided that Richard was the guy that was gonna walk all are they couldn't find anybody who would give them -- first round pick for Vince Wilfork -- year.
See I'm not sure this has anything to do events and maybe if you -- vets. You're sitting there and you see Richard Seymour traded. Do you really have the confidence -- sale August it's my turn necessary they actually did Richard Seymour.
Now that's where that we're guarantees I don't mean that I don't mean but my point is we thought all along one album was gonna half ago. At least I felt well I shouldn't say -- at a -- me put those words I felt all along one of those guys was gonna have to ago. Two years from now we're gonna look back on the straight and say oh my god he's a genius. You know he's got a fifth overall of the sixth overall or whatever number it is for and.
Still no. I disagree with that I he has very good at what he doesn't and I -- let's make this clear today these people who say. In bill we trust. War. He is. Look at his track record on and on I had all the cliches out -- that's fine. Yes he is the best at what he does. In the national football don't make -- at best at what he'd done that yet the best at what he does have made mistakes are recently. You know small mistakes big mistakes small mistakes Kevin O'Connell. The not a mistake small mistake Chad Jackson small mistake Bethel Johnson. So he is capable up a misjudgment an excuse me and a mr. valuation.
I I thought he made him -- in valuation in terms of what he got in return for Matt Cassel Mike Vrabel. I thought that was a mistake -- again -- I know it's easy got value in return but for those two players.
It's not to your point of will look at this in two years and say ought to number five pick with a number one pick where the numbers -- ID number -- Jay Leno okay. Look at the number three pick in this draft. Tyson Jackson. -- Richard Seymour well --
That may have you know confidence in their ability to pick that player. I think the other key to this though is 2011. But I don't want to -- Clinton had offered the first round pick next year they wouldn't it on the steel.
and -- in an already -- this I'm just my point is just of just to follow up on that that 2011. Point or or. You know top five top two number one and you don't know what the draft is going to be. And you don't know if a guy is gonna develop into that franchise got let your best case scenario. Is is getting somebody who can. Who can be a playmaker and contribute you don't think. That now all. Every time we have a top five pick. You'll get a guy who is a five time pro bowler. Who was who who who make five consecutive pro bowls on the -- what they can't game changer. Just because they have a top pick to hear from now doesn't mean they're gonna be able to replace this --
Well and let's talk about 2011 draft there's two things at play here one I agree with you the draft probably won't be as good. As you would normally think because I think if you are if you were able to come out for the draft next year you're coming out. I'm seeing you want taken a chance. You if you got an advisor quote on quote or an agent who's got half a brain he's gonna say there's a real good chance that in 2011. There's going to be a rookie salary. Cap of some kind a rookie salary structure if you're coming out you come -- 2010. I don't think the draft will be as good.
lot of juniors to the July yours will be coming out if they wanna get paid out guys say an odd. I'm not ready to come out and I enjoy college football I'm not doing it for the money I guess you would stay but. That's probably what 10% 5% of the.
Players for every Tim Tebow there's you know fifteen other guys were sent you -- I'm -- out what are you kidding me so I I agree with you the temple Wii is great. By the same token there will be some sort of rookie salary structure in place in my opinion in 2011. They will not. Not play football not an option. They will get this done there's too much money at stake for both sides I don't believe the NFL will ever stepped in front of that work stoppage by.
Again the I just I just don't like this trade. For the 2009 season. Now that -- few questions you have to ask how to Richard Seymour find out about this deal -- think about. The contributions. You've made to a franchise you won three Super -- you were the coach's first first round draft choice. Immediately became a force play in the Super Bowl your rookie year. Started a string of pro bowls your second year. Written really stabilize the defensive line and the Bill Belichick came in. You want to do the basic thing which which every coach wants to do whether year. In and pop Warner high school college of the pros wanna be able to run the ball and want you to stop the run and and Richard Seymour allowed them to have a guy that had to be account afford all time capsule on the defensive line so you put these contributions -- you put that the sacrifice and you put though you make sacrifices you put the work -- You put a lot of thought and time and energy into your job. And you helped make. That you've helped brand this franchise as you know a dynastic won three championships in four years in the penetrated.
I wonder how he probably deserve more than a phone that's gonna say it got to find out in the right way that's one thing that's probably drive -- it is Sunday morning when he found out. You would hope and I don't know desperate to hope somebody. Either Bill Belichick or somebody's position coach. -- week's house not for a Wayne North Attleboro and knocked on the Doran says Richard we gotta talk.
Yeah that that's one thing the other thing is. You have to ask yourself was there -- drop off and -- That's the question and one that ask was where there whispers there that he had fallen off and not according to the people I talked to players. Players had no there's no drop off at all. And as one player said Richard Seymour. It is so good that number one he was always going to the right place right. He's -- he hit Baghdad he's gonna hit -- again but even when he didn't go to the right place he would correct himself. In motion. It's a lap because -- because it was so big in in such a force that he would steer out alignment. Where he wanted to indigo and the other thing is you have to an end we hear this from fans all the time one's over rated he's not that -- not this is that that. You gotta understand what kind of system they were -- hoping they'll continue to play that way but in that system. A defensive linemen and linebackers -- for. Keep it clean keep all that junk away from allowed you as a linebacker. Jerod Mayo Gary Guyton -- Thomas allows those guys to make.
I have a couple questions that and I'd also like to see answered and I'm sure they will be here within the next day or two I think there's a misconception out their perpetrated by Tom cable. That Richard Seymour is issue is with the patriots before the steel can get done because I don't think it is with the patriots I think it's with the Oakland Raiders. I think that Richard Seymour wants one of two things he either wants. A written assurance from them that they will not franchise and next year which turns this into a two year deal. Is he wants out at the end of the year wants to go -- he wants ago. He either wants that or he wants a big contract huge contract our hands were times story out now we had this discussion earlier today and I said I don't know there's enough money. That that they could throw -- Richard Seymour that makes it worth playing there I'm not sure that --
I think terrorists I think there's enough there is a lot of it now. Yes we gave it a lot I there it is it they'll probably wanted to bet will be one of the best contracts in northern California. When it's over but yet there is money. To entice Richard Seymour. I don't understand why -- The patriots that's all Mike Lombardi -- no he's got a a history of Bill Belichick. And somebody that organizations talked to -- might be bill knows. Mike Lombardi said on the NFL network they were not going to sign him. To an extension they were not gonna give him his third contract was gonna walk at the end of the while another I've I've I think that's pretty interesting. Nobody said it has to be a seven year contract. Nobody says you have to be a five year contract. But Richard Seymour right now as we have this conversation is 29. To be thirty. During the season.
A thirty year old defensive linemen. Who in my estimation was not on the on the decline. It in and if you go back and look at it the argument against him as he misses a lot of -- welcome back and look at his games played record. -- Not as many as his critics think he did.
2007. Email us he played nine games right. The the you know unbelievable offensive juggernaut year I think he played nine. But he was there for the playoffs -- I'm talking nine regular season games and then you know was there for the playoff run com. That's that's probably the year that if if they're saying that that's what they're pointing to. He missed the whole first half of the season basically and it wasn't able to play.
And and we also have to point out some anything -- now with this trade and we can just talk about this all day in a lot of people have its history was made understandably. There is no precedent for this yet. On on bill Belichick's resonate there's no precedent for and I know he has made Contra -- controversial moves before here. And in Cleveland but he's never done anything like this you say okay well how about lawyer -- that's the club well come -- a lawyer Malloy a couple things. Lawyer below ways. Equal. Was here not even it wasn't an easy cool. Maybe -- means better. Of the voters and take it for what it's worth the holders of the patriots all time teams and the best safety. That too great safeties and patriots history. For all time and horrible it was not one of Rodney Harrison was right and Rodney Harrison in place so. To they have the next Richard Seymour and place they don't.
Well I'll put it this way if they do. They're seeing more than the rest of us are seeing. Whether it's Myron Pryor Ron brace.
Also -- in that year. In 2002. Before before they cut lawyer -- the previous year. They had made it a point of saying show me where the plays were made by the -- Our bird Bill Belichick Afghanistan it shall we brought the plays are you think you get to -- tellem and lawyer believes a playmaker well. -- I don't see any -- how's -- any forced -- I don't see any interceptions I don't see any recovered fumble where the place. Well. You know ask him about -- to signal from last year we had eight sacks. Among other things right. -- of the game last year when Bill Belichick said Richard Seymour played one of one of his best -- Dominic Iraqi bright phrase it but that was the game -- had one tackle.
Right -- basically no one tackled again still still the politics that. He got a great is it possible that they look at personnel that they look at Richard Seymour strengths weaknesses what do her. And they say you know what if for a price -- it were predominantly 314. That man is a monster. When we switch to 43 of -- predominantly for three team he's not the same monster and I don't know that that could be the case but is that what -- deal.
What what -- 2001. -- three. -- their point 432002 they were terrible on defense and 97. But he started his career as a 43 guy.
No I I'm I'm just I'm trying to come up with what what went into their thought process. I you know what I do you know what I keep coming back to when you disagreed with me. They took advantage of an age battled Al Davis. They felt they were never gonna see that kind of return for this player other than that team and battle right there.
Okay qualifying and in let's say he is let's say he's crazy. -- by let's say you lost it. Well you don't have to that you don't have to contribute to you don't have to participate. Yeah it it'll be good to know that it would get a first round pick for a consumer project trying to win game right you're trying to win gave this is not fantasy football. That he. The balance is. Trying to do do things for this year. And trying to improve the franchise and it's very difficult to do vote. Sometimes it's wanted to -- but if you can only do one -- the other. Your focus should be this year if -- Tom Brady -- think about 2011. This can often needs of a major knee injury you receivers are getting older ones what's Randy Moss going to be in two years what is often the blind going to be in two years. What's Tom Brady gonna be in two years you don't care about that.
No I win the games now. Think about it too from a patriots defensive point of view and I have a feeling it's just that got on my part that. They're gonna have some problems at least early on this season. In in the course of one year you've lost Rodney Harrison Tedy Bruschi Mike Vrabel and Richard Seymour. Could you lose for bigger. Playmakers to use your term and leaders than that group in one year I mean I know they got younger -- more athletic guys.
Got a combination. You got a combination of losses here in Richard Seymour loss of 29 year old guy which -- best defensive -- So that's active in his prime player. Tedy Bruschi was past his prime but hell -- leader. Mike Vrabel. He probably is past his prime years but still productive player -- leader Rodney Harrison -- prime justice still too banged up. Another great leader you you've lost some playmakers you've lost some leadership and if you wanna extend it for awhile over the last. Two to three years. I'm not gonna include -- here will be crazy. But maybe it. You lost the Sante Samuel. And then two to the guys -- debt makes you can't you haven't replaced them all well and -- we have replace water to let me I would think. If you if you're saying you're replacing. Jerod Mayo if you're replacing Tedy Bruschi Jerod Mayo okay maybe. Within would you replace. -- were able.
Yeah and and not only that but of those four guys that I mentioned. Told before you had no could you have no choice okay. I'm not buying into the conspiracy theory that Belichick went to Bruschi and said hey fair -- which are away or are we're gonna do -- my -- I don't believe that. -- and -- case in Kennedy's case Bill Belichick had no say in losing those guys it was time. He did have a choice in the other -- and he elected to make those choices he elected to deal Mike Vrabel away and he elected to trade Richard Seymour away. I hope those choices don't come back and bite him in the back.
Well my my only thought. If this if we're talking about football decisions my only thought is that Bill Belichick and we know. He has a coach who likes to study music coach you won't change with the times very quickly won't get stale. In the same old style on the and in the same old thing. Is is Bill Belichick about to radically changed his defense. And I -- about 4334. Right right he is gonna radically change in terms of height weight speed standards on on -- on -- likes and got an Arab member. You know what Cato June and number Cato June he was a free agent. And people were sent me money to faster on defense with a go after Cato -- don't know Cato June is basically a glorified safety playing linebacker. Not knowing the patriot type a guy while it is that stuff gonna change. Are the standards are are gonna go for faster linebackers -- to make a difference that a defensive end is 265. Pounds and not. 300. Like Warren. And Nazi war. Is this the beginning of that just a brave new world for Bilbao.
