you because it was their job.
I had the excuse of a watch balls in all got to watch the Sox game in Toronto. Got to watch the patriots game. It sure was easy to click that button -- and HD and away from. Channel four rates because god that was an awful football game.
It was pretty bad area with it would it was not a very exciting the best way to put it it was uneventful pre season game with pretty much a typical pre season game but one guy. Who -- to redeeming night it's a -- stadium last night with janitors. Chris.
Has been a guest on the program on a number -- in the past. Part Knox was their last night and I -- the HBO series hard knocks is following the Cincinnati angles and training can. They -- their use -- crews everywhere they had a bunch Kristi was -- it was hard not to see. A hard knocks it across and I saw probably four by different crews -- Well and and if that's true and I know it is then it has answered a huge question from. I've always wondered it's I've watched hard knocks through the years how much is for the sake of the cameras and we sought last night. Why the hell would Marvin Lewis have Chad Ochoa cinco kicking an extra point were kicking off if not for the TV each and.
aren't the mastering of god loves all sports entertainment.
It was fantastic -- it was great it was great theater last -- great fun to -- in -- cinco of course played along with it was grateful locker after the game. -- back and forth with reporters he was talking about his history playing football or what he called football actually soccer he's apparently friends with David Beckham it was fun to watch it it.
Liven up an otherwise deadly dole make it to let's I have I have no issues with Chad -- cinco and you know we've talked in the past about ultra Rel low ones and I said I wouldn't want to rent loans on my football team. I would never say that about Chad notre cinco he makes it work and and he does pull up when we're having this discussion in the office a little while ago about how. You know. You're okay with him and he has had -- put up my quotation fingers here on field transgressions. In uniform transgressions is the right -- the exact you know what he's got that. Idiotic Hall of Fame jacket on on the sidelines he's in his uniform he's played a football game he's too busy worrying about props and getting his public. You know what he's holding up assigned please don't find me it's the same thing as pulling out of sharply -- or or polling on a cell phone. He is he's got an ego the size of North Dakota and yet somehow you don't dislike him as much as it gets electoral.
He makes it work his personality. He's very charming he's very -- he's also whatever you say about -- he's also -- over the Rexall Place he's a very good football player exactly but he's also very good of the press he's also very helpful. He gives you know he gives the media what they -- he gives the media what they want. We saw last night it's of that stadium I think that there's just something different in his personality different in his nature Bill Belichick clubs of Belichick went on. That was the only positive to come -- last night's press conference. Belichick was very you know he he was he was regarded on a bunch of things and we knew we heard in the Cutler at the very top of the show. Talking about though you know we're very sloppy and very inconsistent we did do this well we did do this what we can do this will the last question was about notre cinco in the extra point. -- he all of a sudden just lit up like a Christmas tree they have a great relationship they have a fund relationship McConnell went back and forth there was a team back in 2007. Where they went back and forth to and some good natured trash talking before the game it's fun to watch -- on -- listen to -- bring something to --
outlook bill ballot tech has done some things looking did something in a regular season game when he allowed Doug Flutie the to take the drop kick extra point. I mean I think he has a certain. Feel for the fact that it is still a game no matter how seriously as having said all of that. An extra point he might have allowed I'm not think in that Bill Belichick would allow a wide receiver kick off know and and I know was for the TV show which is why it's wrong way it's why I think Marvin Lewis made a mistake them. Just for the sake of this this discussion he gets up temples -- hammy kicking off what do the people in Cincinnati saying today decked film. Mormon is able bagels disabled bungled aghast you know -- this is why they are who BR this is wide and -- angles. Still one of the most dysfunctional franchise in the NFL not all the pro sports this is -- you know the quality of the rep the I know that it was brought up among the players down this week because Cincinnati was coming to town because many of the players. Maybe watching TV and seen Hart knocks. The players were ask did you ever picture this happening here and everybody responded last. I mean there is you could put it on the Bill Belichick wouldn't they wanted to do each be going to approach them. Here early early yuan in in in the run of the series I think that might have been the first Europe -- the first to the second year. In the approach the -- it's about doing it in the putrid one it absolutely no part -- a secretive they are. It is still my partners my normal partners credit. That he was a lot around their three year exactly -- in the on the wall on the back of the realm. Even went away. From what they normally do. You know by the time the book comes out the season's over if you if you made anybody -- the seasons you know I mean there's just. There's no chance in the he would allow those cameras. I'm always surprised that Hamachi allows to the the patriots all access. That's pretty. Even on drafting two new this year the attic in the war room they're getting a little more policy open minded but -- when the curtain back. A lot of the stuff that they do you mentioned you mentioned Michael's book. -- total access they're doing more and more that they're never gonna get. The hard that the of the level Lexus again urged to call the patriot memory in I'm ever gonna have a camera in the role. When Bill Belichick is telling it exactly. I don't buy though don't we Cincinnati does it be seen as they did this and it got the room at 5 o'clock in the morning in football lights sedentary habit to playbook your -- He can't -- yet and with a little bit. Which are basically telling in in most of these case you're telling him his -- When he's apple -- apple away. Cincinnati angles not quite as good as the England patriots last night score notwithstanding. I tried to think positives to take out of this in the first came up with -- is Tom Brady got his edge and he said after the first exhibition game he really wished he got hit. A couple of I actually keep. Him around it -- You know he Adam he knocked down -- at one problem it was a pre season yeah McConaughey you would -- a -- he's now the Robert Geathers here on the other -- a little harder yeah. That's fine I mean we had to get some of these things out of the way anyway. I I kicked it could racing got somebody in part -- there. And I think it's it was open like that -- and it's the end Brady's point nobody wants to give it. You've got a -- you got it all with you gotta find out what your mind is like Uga. The psychological. And I know everybody -- there -- and watch in the game. Yeah yeah well aid Gillette Stadium that awful quiet last.
Especially after the gathers I thought that was the one bit spooked a lot of people more so with the in the Keith Rivers hit. The fact that he just -- street in it was just like -- on the website that are over W yet Erica there was like in his UV blow to the best going in just boom. And things -- awful quiet but he got up and that's the one thing that everyone talked about the locker room last night they said it'll you know was a tough it he wanted to get hit it was a tough it. But he got up he looked okay yet three more plays after the gathers it and -- and his night was done I think at that point you're not going to accomplish a whole lot more. You don't need to put him out there harm's -- more than party did I against a pretty good defense surprisingly good defensive since there.
I'll give I'll give Randy cross full credit for this cause he called the had a time. He he actually settle any circled these at all look at this matchup out here with Chris Henry one on one against Terrence Wheatley. And you know four seconds later the balls in the end zone and touchdown escort. A guy who's probably not gonna have a wonderful day at that film session today as parents we.
They're gonna spend a lot of they look at film and he admitted last night he needs to go back to the film and look at what he did wrong to his credit. He stood there in the locker and answered every single question last night -- run and hide. He had a rough night he had a very rough night -- it looks like he may have regressed after what was -- pretty good rookie season he now. People have built in people people know what he can do in he has an established business tablet quantity in the National Football League. The challenge for him is to be able to go to that next level because now people know who he is what he can and cannot do. In he has now to take that to the next level knowing it's also a pitcher going through there going to batting order second them yes we will pick that up in make those adjustments.
Tackling in the secondary was horrific. Last night it was pretty bad for much of the night and look at but it's been an issue here. Awhile now. I feel pretty good about patriots offense and and their ability to score points. I hated the Patriots defense last year I hated. And so did and and so did Bill Belichick I hated their ability to get a team off the field on third down and I hated their red zone the fence. You know these are all things that aren't aren't exactly bulletins for everybody. But going into this year if the if the team is his goodies you and I might think they're going to be. They've got to be better defensively and and the secondary it's gotta be a lot better than what we saw now I would I would -- Shawn Springs with the Dow was tough -- and I know there.
They're counting on springs to do a lot this year Indian springs has struggled to see the field in training camp. And you looked pretty bad on that on that swing -- last night. I would put out there that the the defense doesn't need to be much better than it was last directing people up greeted in the secondary considerably I think we Bodden. Is gonna be a pleasant surprise for a lot of people. I don't think the defense needs to be as good because I think the offense is going to be better. I am I going to be better at I think you're gonna see some shoot -- I think you're gonna see some deems the tasting was gonna get into that they're gonna win. As a most of back in 2007 when -- went thirty to seven -- gonna see 35 to 21. I think you've upgraded on the defensive side of the football I think you're a lot better a lot of positions there's still some question marks most notably -- outside linebacker spot. Opposite details Thomas wanna see how that gets filled. -- But you see Derrick Burgess and you -- totally be into teams split wide looking like outside linebackers -- their beef incidents were there throwing a lot of different defensive looks. Look I think they have improved a lot areas. On defects that being said. From meet the secondary is still the question mark villa with some of those young defensive backs last night had a decent night Darius butler -- acquitted of several -- Mediate took a step back after first pre season game. Muffed that punt I don't he swung and -- also -- a DD Dorsey leaving him as well. He had a rough night he kind of stumbled just a little bit but again the second -- from me. On this defense is is really be expected on port you told me a week ago that in Europe -- Andrew Walter was the backup quarterback on this football elected to the moral.
Kevin O'Connell didn't help himself much last night I didn't think he had one good drive -- O'Connell had one good drive I mean that -- that the last sequence the last sequence and that was being -- you know you're running with the football and you know you've got no timeouts left and you don't get out of bounds the clock ticks down that was that was tough to watch O'Connell had won --
Given this O'Connell had one good drive at the end of the first half he got a chance to really get into some good situation football yet three straight completions I think there was 1515 and 22 yarder. Probably his finest sequence for my money as a New England -- in his limited time in -- That being said. I think the number two quarterback position as the premier -- when you go to training camp and in I was there for most of the 25 or so training camp practices the ones that Walter where that was -- four. He's usually -- Walter inbreeding going often working on quarterbacks specific girls in you saw hoyer and O'Connell. Going off to be the scout team seat the or whatever kind of filling in bridle as needed so that led to this orange thing on -- exactly yeah yeah exactly so that leads me to believe. That these guys it you know if it was breaking down must leave it did at Walter was the new number two I still think it's a flexible situation I think if if if -- Walter comes out in the third game in shows that he's got a good community offense if you please better than he did -- that pre season opener. I think you could still see a little battle for number two I also think that that they wanted to got to take a look but the wind Erica but O'Connell sales and look at. Your job here's the number two business enters into.
Either way. Look a year ago if you said to me -- Tom Brady's gonna get her how do you feel about Matt Cassel would have -- examined in fear. And I probably feel the same way now I don't feel good about either guy being a backup quarterback. Except in those blowout games where -- and enhance the ball off the few times or take a few knees. I think there's a real battle at the tight end position. And I go back to that that each whole line in football you can't make the club in the tub and at some point or another Ben -- gonna have show somebody complacent football.
What -- again struggled to field through through training camp in this he can't do is he came into this training camp this was a BB training him for him I think he really needed to show. What he was made of it was clear the team had put a little bit heat on him. By bringing in Chris speaker and Alex Smith and too little hole let me make a whole lot of moves at that position. He hasn't seen -- field -- hasn't played well when he's been on the field. I don't I I think if you're looking at a -- I think people have asked me if you look at a guy who might be a surprise cut. Coming out of this pre season I think you could look at Ben Watson is a -- not on the hook for a lot of years you -- The hook for whole Lotta money if you do wind up cutting him injury in a situation where a little bit about yesterday. If he plays his cap numbers like one point four if they economies cap number is like 440 some doubt he would stay exactly it's about I was -- it's about 500000 so it's -- your not on the hook. For whole Lotta money plus you have some pretty good depth that deposition. Guys you've seen you know you can Tyson to -- that -- Al Smith has been around the league for years. So you can make some moves at that position. Again if there's going to be a guy who's gonna get cut and on not -- and a -- here but if there's going to be one of those semi surprise cuts coming at a camp. I think it'll probably --
