Welcomed at Fenway Park and welcome to the Herb Chambers Cadillac in Providence pregame show my name is John Rich. The Red Sox lost a season high sixth consecutive game in New York last night and at the moment. Boston -- the 62 and 48 that put them -- atop the wild card standings with Texas. In -- six and a half games behind the Yankees in the American League east this evening it's the first of four -- the Detroit Tigers Brad Penny starts opposite Edwin Jackson. Now let's get the latest from the manager Terry Francona is brought to you by big OT. Terry Francona is Greenfield choice here's Dave O'Brien by John thank you very much -- there's no denying it Major League Baseball is a fascinating sport. Look back over these ten days that the Red Sox had just come off. At what didn't happen as far as eventful ones.
The other blog going on -- mean we've read roster moves. We've had -- our acquisitions. We've -- designated guys for assignments we've been losses. Vanished during games. It's been an interest in ten days. Have you been through anything quite like that before is in all of you Red Sox seasons where I think eight out of ten days the club made a move. Yeah actually unfortunately yes -- back channel six. Things were happening at a pace that we just didn't have an answer for. This has been a really tough week for us I don't feel like I felt most six. We've got coddled little -- saw us for five days and blossom excruciating games. We've had to make some moves because of it. That doesn't mean we can't come back and when play better I don't think -- six we were able to do that physically we can do that now salt. There's a lot of reason that I feel. Like we need to be dragon or tails that's like helpless. This is different we've we've created little bit of a mess for ourselves but we can clean up. When you look at your line up did you ever foresee. A point we you'd go even ten or fifteen innings without Ron little 31. One that's the way this game goes sometimes you see some things happen that you shake your head and you try to -- reasons. And rather than spend too much time lamenting our woes. What we chose to do was go out an extra hit. I think -- we grind that's the best way for us to get through whatever we get through whether it's offensively or pitching. That's really the best way we know how to do is keep working and and try to make you better. Everybody knows you're not a big team meeting guy you're you don't have a great deal of faith and in what that might bring. But she did do it yesterday very briefly can you talk about what what happened there what was brief religious thing it's a sometimes. As a team to to give a reminder. Of who we are. What we stand for now play the game. And again sometimes. Things can appear unsettled -- on the trading deadline. Then when you mean you disposed to get settled in right when we're trying to get new players in here and be comfortable. All of sudden all hell's breaking loose so sometimes as a manager is -- is my job. To make sure that things are settled because I think we can play better baseball that would.
On your show we haven't spoken about the David Ortiz press conference in everything that transpired there you were just of the few feet away from David. How did you feel it all came to pass in the -- feel about it now a day or so later.
You know was privy to a lot not not everything because it wasn't my. Was supposed to be but I I watched all along and knew that it was unfair to David. I knew enough to see it was going to be unfair he wasn't able to talk and he wanted desperately to be looking for answers he was probably get a lot of you know people with opinions that didn't know. And he wasn't able to speak publicly I think that was killing him when he was able to speak publicly applauded him -- race. Ortiz just like we expect David to I'm most proud of him. Nobody condones. The use of performance enhancing drugs. I also think that every case is different and -- a lot of people -- there and talk about rolled my eyes at that time or in but I didn't would be.
Jim Leland said. I believe David Ortiz if he says this thing then I choose to believe it. I know you and Jim have a very tight relationship. Actually sauce on Jim's comments on not just David but on this particular thing in in in particular. The subject and I think he's sometimes can be fascinating maybe I do a lot of respect for -- around a would be his brains out. But he has a way of saying things that make a lot of sense to me about your lineup tonight is big poppy in their -- was in there. Wood -- Kotchman at first. We are you go over a third. Try to keep you got the outfield for the foreseeable future but it bay -- left. Catcher victor just because you turn around and we were trying to. I think tech has shown with a few extra days off he came all the box and bought like he has in a few years so that's help little bit too. Getting back home I have to believe does a world of good coming off a sweep of the hands of the Yankees he that's one thing but just to be back home after a long road trip is another you know just only guys and reading earlier I felt that way -- into a -- over the red -- through my window down. And I got an -- But I think it's you know we need to make it be good but didn't back home we've played better here so hopefully we'll take advantage of that.
