Jim Rice, Baseball Hall of Famer

I talked about doing it right there's a guy. Who has done a lot of things right. Over the course of his Major League career and he did something -- very right. Last week when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Joining us right now what a pleasure and honor to talk to the hall of Famer for the Red Sox memorized and I don't today.

Jim looking back at those fourteen years leading up to that menu and I've talked about this over the years you never lobby. You know what I think a lot of guys would've -- out there and say listen this is why I belong in the hall. Why didn't you have -- why did you think the numbers should speak for themselves.

Well I don't -- the key thing that keeping a plan based what they would play baseball you look for the numbers and of course Brett did but I did get out there any doubt. But my whole thing about all the playing guys to me is that I think he should have maybe lack. A standard. That you have so many home runs RBI eight. That we get so big -- all the things that you look at for the hall of Famer didn't have the young guy that they can say hey look. I can make these numbers I can be all of -- that out carolinian and having the writers who vote it's really tough. Because if you go back you think about all of hoping that was up that worked well on the podium. They were talking about guy that they thought should've been called QB and all the things -- had not. They would tell you like guys that they've made this that was better than I what this guy with a tremendous ballplayer with no one ever read about these guys. But the guys that in the Hall of Fame days they within that state these guys have a top player he's got dominated for awhile. You know a Big -- you look at someone like down Andre Dawson. What playing in my probably get all the publicity that it got at least yet and -- that in. He's going to look up without Hoffman Rivera and not -- you guys like that but you know the -- that didn't deliberately lit.

But Jimmy if you think in I think I disagree with -- on this point. Let's say guys that is -- earlier a guy like Raphael Palmeiro even before we found out that he used steroids but he had the numbers. -- ever really looked at him. As a dominant -- people what did you said he was one of the most -- guys for a decade. Even though Palmeiro had the numbers. Was he ever did you ever look at him as like the best first baseman in the game so I don't know if if you have. A number standard and the guy reaches it does that make them hall of Famer just because these teams are numbered.

Well you -- not would you sit -- also you can also look at. -- cal Ripken became -- dominate.

And I was just around for a long time.

Tony -- dominate. We know it'd probably would definitely a better not to respect your team without. Tony Gwynn -- with what you start with.

the city would that -- Look at those dollars on the identity longevity tonight it's hardly batting.

I wasn't being back yet they don't spend a great. Well when you look good teams you look at someone to go out and dig itself out of somebody to drive just -- me. You know if you go back to look at Tony Gwynn at what time they had only bad third bad for the run production. We put him back of course. So a lot of that is certain situation where you can be found a clear that you dominant player in certain situations -- in -- which we got to drive in runs in home run.

Impact butler doubled the impact -- an impact on the games you don't think these guys who. Who are like you know 33345. Hitters with you know seven home runs in home runs. You don't look at those as dominant players.

No I doubt. Written stuff okay in the that it -- I think guys that you see appear on the podium that was like that.

And I you can get even say Ricky because Ricky Hatton impacted differently Ricky didn't hit a lot of home runs but -- it all runs were leadoff guy and stole a lot of bases.

you get -- with a guy that I'll play evidently they deserted right it also it is in the idea but when you talk about dominant player I think that's what you need to talk about. How do you determine the dominant player. Impact player.

What's more I think sometimes we had the stars -- before about the writers and how many guys there are voting now you know. I think the veteran's committee is is a better way to do nothing that should be the only way but the veterans from Wednesday and spent a lot of time talking about well let's face this guy you know they'll call and the guys is the guys in the -- thing. The guys who played and that there. It seems to me that the guys who played with and against those guys to be the best judge of it.

Well I've redundant and that but you know. Those guys are not I'm not voting total as opposed I think you have to look at the writers that -- that this was what without the player. And I have Billy from the guy didn't hoping that all the -- to clear the -- that would get a little.

One -- want to know from your perspective. How did you view the media what what was your relationship with the media and are are some of the stories exaggerated.

Mostly deadly that they you know when Mike I'm -- Willingham liked what I write you know if he Eric Clapton. Take less than guys like that but he's got all the guys these guys. With a guy had been run baseball isn't as he had been route and -- always respect my -- there is -- it was a new guys than anything else. And Michael I got in trouble lot of time because I didn't talk about the team. I thought what runoff if you want to talk about me what I did that screwed up body get no hit public that didn't talk every day. It's always talked to me about it all the way negate I got paid for that right unity to meet you sort of write what you saw that night. I wouldn't let the guy that pat myself on the back -- background -- drop. I was -- every night -- that run that is not we weren't out of I -- I got in trouble for that I'd leave it. But would you open you really I don't think everybody is saying -- who won -- game with what looked like what what would you lot that we get this state here. Yet to take the bump and grind everything.

Its -- that you actually were. What most guys are going to skip out after a loss -- you -- the opposite of that and get away and that and of course now I got a point -- Michael you know he's a member of the media. How about that.

Were asked to give their opinion on performance enhancing drugs and you get very strong opinions -- you you have been caught. Using something you do not belong in the Hall of Fame could elaborate on that.

Well. If they -- hit it he -- view we're doing that you Q you know other guys that are up here. Why you sort of -- category with guys that never really heated game compared to -- that he. Game is so nice -- example for the young that hey it's okay used the other. You can get all the way to make sure you don't use him use him at the right -- so I think he's been he's been a bad example. And one that would that mean I was in New York maybe back to go eat it. -- Q you have also got an opening what got you still what you put -- one another wall. It's probably they got me what good does that make up people -- you gotta make the day you walk so he got four -- there. And if you don't think -- legitimately don't belong in the Hall of Fame at all whether it's a separate Waller and I'm it is don't belong in Cooperstown.

In your home runs each year in tournaments do you think those numbers affected you over the fourteen years one of the reasons you didn't get -- was because of that explosion in offense which we now know. Was linked to performance enhancing drugs.

You're seeing that it's so you've got to do what's best for the team but when you talk about it would be in the lady that would be gotten out equipment you get guys. No but the big thing is when you see guys that are not home run hitters.
