Football fans down here. So anxious. That they're cheering. Pass completions from Brady to Welker just like it's a football game. They are down on the field right now running some month. Normal practice drills but they just cheered and interception. They just cheered -- radio Welker pass it's. It's a fun time for folks down here.
See you -- You should boo every Brady to Welker pass because that means. Your defense is still struggling to expect that he secured usage mr. Rupert for interceptions and reflections and pressures and knock on the -- even on the first day training camp. Weller was just a Brandon meriwether. Interception that they were cheering as well so.
burst while I'm having trouble opening. -- This is all that radios -- I thought I I had you know I can't read commercials. If we can't do that so and that the fact that it is now pouring down here. Which we and can move things around it is that the no no no no fun. That's the one thing they'll closest baby home -- will close this joint down if that happens but it.
I was I was saying something earlier -- that speaking of that -- Down here you guys on a -- heard about these low the scores so that you don't. But I was ending earlier. It Teddy Bruschi is in his were Tutsis.
He has been to many training camps. And in Foxboro. In once again on the first if you if you wanna talk about. Talk about dedication and devotion. First -- training camp. I looked down here from the -- let's see here at NIC Heidi Bruschi there. With their kids on the first -- training camp I I I wouldn't blame party if she says at this point. You know I've seen a couple I hesitate -- well or we want I would want our championships I've seen you accomplished some great things in the league. I'm I'm -- July today. On July 30 you know you come on back home and you tell me how was split. This is this is what they do every year. She is she is on the schedules he knows how works in. He's ready for training camp. Well it along with along with about couple thousand of her friends.
Some of the people in the rain started -- headed for some higher ground here but and some of the people are headed up to the cars but. A lot of folks just stick around watch a football -- here let's turn our attention to what happened last night and what we asked do you ask well we have to at least not John. Yeah and and the closer you get to the trade deadline the in the National Football League and and the more year teenager -- is -- sorry that your football and bring you said -- and hear how can I help. And the closer you get to the trade that deadline in Major League Baseball and the more -- team continues to struggle. The more the drumbeat builds in the background to try to make some move that will. You know straighten things out fix things move things around -- pieces back in place. I'm not sure move does that but I also on the point where. I'm convinced more than ever bit the -- almost has to make some sort of a major.
I don't think he has to make a major move I'm I'm advocating the move or. -- Roy Halladay just in nature that just because I think we'll be cool and it would set the Red Sox -- not just this year. But -- and the next three or four seasons because I'm convinced. The red doctor Roy Halladay. He's not leaving town without a new contract. They acquire him he will be here for at least three or four more seasons. But I don't feel like they have to make a major move to make the playoffs. They don't have that they don't have to acquire Roy Halladay they don't have to do they don't have to go out and get Victor Martinez that'll have to go out Adrian Gonzales. I think some guys are are struggling. And you say. Are right there's there's no recovery from that they're not gonna be the same player again and I think one guy and category is David Ortiz. Security's probably not gonna be the same player. He was even two years ago. -- the struggling David Ortiz. Prevents you. From getting to the playoffs it. Kevin Youkilis gets hot again if J. D. Drew just gets up to 275 he's in the 240s right now because that the 275 to eighty. Does it does that. Is that enough I think it it. You get those guys that Jason Bay gets up from -- 250s. To the -- Japanese doing. All of these guys are not gonna have offseason.
How much you think the trade deadline is weighing on some guys because I I really wonder about you right now yes. I I really -- bass yeah I I think it to weigh in on out of that.
You know ahead in I talked to beat beat but not to back about this yesterday. Over at the ballpark because I was I was telling him about the story. You -- on the year. Well I guess even he mentioned on the air you -- I didn't hear today you heard there about how. He was right contract year with the Oakland -- and he really got to. And I asked him mr. what you're that was in 1990 was you know he had an ERA of 061. In 1990s -- was 1992. And he wanted this day and Sandy Alderson was a very smart man. Knew we wanted this day. We just waited at wanted to get a deal done and focus on baseball as Sandy Alderson. Does -- amounts and by PayPal -- wreck here. I'll probably get the deal that I want. And if it got to act but he still turned out any he had a pretty good season. For Youkilis. The contract is not on his mind he signed a new contract. He knows he's got to be a member of the Red Sox the question is. Is -- gonna be. Here after the deadline Wright is not the contract on his mind at that trade talks on his mind. That I never thought I would was the game with Kevin Youkilis. Struck out four pounds and and it happens to the greatest of mall on me all the all the greats have gone through. That stretches and even back games but I I I don't think this is what's that.
He has he has had some struggles now for a while. And and I think it's maybe been weigh in on his mind for a while he's been very on Kevin Youkilis like here for a little bit. But you're right last night just -- works it just I just don't see it just. I mean he looked like he was guessing and being -- on stuff he just didn't look like he was than normal. Kevin Youkilis I think he's one guy that it's affecting I've I've thought for a little while now and might I think you might disagree that. Maybe Jason Bay is being affected by the contract's up a little bit too. And and I don't know if it's if it's messing with his head obviously that's not the issue with David Ortiz. You know I'm not -- that's it you're worried about a new contract -- under contract for awhile now it's not the issue for him. But the more we see this rotation right now and we said this couple days till you get two guys Europe that you feel really good about one is today. With Jon Lester the other obviously is Josh Beckett anybody else who starts in the game you're not sure -- gonna again and and the players on the team -- got to feel let too. I mean you know you're always -- I would always feel good you know when Brad Penny takes the ball we always feel good when John Smoltz takes the ball but.
But we can always bring out that old Dan Duquette line after he didn't make a trade. And I got I was on the injured list you say you know bringing back fill in the blank. Is kind of like making a trade gap and giving a boost your team not that that Tim Wakefield as Roy Halladay. Or or one of the elite pitchers in baseball but you have to keep in mind here is an All-Star pitcher who's on the disabled list when he comes back. You'll take away some of that anxiety you feel when you see. A AF Brad Penny picked the ball or a Clay Buchholz or John Smoltz take the ball to the one of those guys gonna be gone if Tim Wakefield comes back. So get to Wakefield coming back. You've got Daisuke coming back at some point.
Yeah but I feel. As confident as I was about him coming back and playing a role on this team before the season was out. I hate that that confidences lesson for me over the last few days per Daisuke yeah. Well now well don't listen I'm.
A few you heard. Tito yesterday -- is great with us yeah and then he talked about it during his pregame press conference he does every day. With members and members of the media and he really expounded on. The conversation he had with Daisuke and he said he talked to woman English and we there was a report. We had that. He talked to him through a translator that's not true he talked to Dice-K without a translator an English and that meant a lot to Francona because. There was an effort. Made on Daisuke sparked it give his side of the story out without anything in yup yup that without any filter coming come in between those two guys. So they talked. He felt very confident. About some of the things that Daisuke said. Ice -- it would have you know express his concerns. To -- was able to tell him what the Red Sox are looking for. I really feel like Daisuke could could be back this year and be very helpful to the red side.
I have felt that all along I I think that. It he has more fences to -- than ever right now and I think the phone call yesterday is certainly a big step in that direction. I think he's pitching coaches down on of a little bit right now I think the guys in this clubhouse are down I don't.
Link so I really don't think so I mean there's so many guys. Who have said things. Who have said stupid things out of frustration. The fact that he had this he said those things in Japanese. Maybe takes it to a different level you need to tell me. That Jonathan Papelbon hadn't hadn't said anything stupid. Yeah you don't think David Ortiz. Had said stupid things. As a red -- I mean -- Josh Beckett is that stupid things they all had so. It would be extremely hypocritical if they were jumping on dice -- anyway I don't I don't agree with what you said you of the team an explanation no doubt you know -- by an explanation. Outside of Tito and John -- because he really would mat there yeah and and my -- holding direct get an edge you know is already talked with them in and some of those things have been smoothed over and I'm sure. There's a conversation come with John --
You know we were joking before that it was get a little moist down here are we sort of passed the little -- stage. And and we gonna full blown monsoon down here I mean any sheets of rain down here now and and I will say. There are some hardy souls who stuck it out. Down here around the practice field but a whole bunch of folks have decided you know what -- watch another practice.
Belichick might like he might like this a little bit. I don't we don't want most most coaches like hot weather during training camp and they want you know 8590 degrees. So I think for the most part he would like it to be hot. But there's something to be said for. Teach your team how to handle all types of weather and all types of situations the minutes of the teachable moment that he that he got from. God that it that -- into that it was only this is part of the the the freaky here plan forward for Bill Belichick.
I'll just point out you know the difference in the sports. The New England Revolution have left the details okay if they've decided it's time to go win. Folks over this field and decided now will -- stay out here in the rain thank you very much. It is pouring down here now we haven't heard thunder yet in as we said that's the one thing that clears these -- pretty quickly. No no no thunder yet but the sheets of rain we looked out across the practice field at the Dana Farber fieldhouse the indoor practice facility here. And the water is just to cascading off the roof of that facility. Mrs. I I know you know we so much need the rain. You know that we're all happy to have it because you know the rain is sold. And officials were we trying to kid we gonna rain the last us forever and regain a bunch of it here today in the first aid training.
So no no let's let's directors baseball thing though do you do you think something is gonna if you -- I think I could deal or what it bottom on what what is that deal. That I still think that holiday is gonna happen and I act I love the they'll war going on between baseball writers. I mean the Boston Herald has the story is very and then call Gordon needs not by name but they might as well. When there's OK that's under certain about as well called about when he said you know JP. Hasn't talked with the Red Sox in three decades. Which is. Flat out a completely different story. The guy -- act right coming out who has okay you know the Red Sox are talking where. With the blue jays and they've given them this package you know Clay Buchholz feared. A list that includes. Pick from a list that includes Justin Masterson and Michael -- in -- lower level prospects may herald about that they haven't thought.
Yeah I it is going back and forth and at work no writers will win like all this week the silly season all week long and ideas. You know rumors and and half truths and fake Twitter accounts and and you know writers wars and everything else and it is a little goofy right you know.
It comes down to this is what it comes down to the same thing it does both of the time. Red Sox -- to come down to the Red Sox and yankees Roy Halladay. Brian Cashman. Knows he's in on Roy Halladay I don't hear what he tells told Sherman I don't care what he tells -- yes network he's absolutely. -- On the best pitcher in the American way.
Well especially if you want but let's this year -- Josh -- African American but but he is one of those guys but especially if your if you have a feeling. That the that's not bad guy could be going right to your your biggest ride they've.
They both are having conversations I guess what they. If they feel like they don't want to give up the prospects the next best thing is JP displays a game of hold them but about the case. It gave -- does that then he's lost. He's gonna get that the package she winds -- getting -- Roy Halladay will be 45% less right than the package you could get right now.
The patriots have cleared the field the fans have cleared they have to pull the plug on what's going on outdoors here we're gonna pull the plug. We're gonna move anyway indoors -- out we were gonna move indoors anyway.
So lightning round. Like he starts right on the world famous. Gillette Stadium.
It's never been backed up by thunder before but it it was here today and the minute the thunder at all the patriots -- inside they clear idea. The aluminum. Stands. Of the fans which is a good plan to. So we're gonna -- we're gonna take a break we're gonna -- inside and and -- this discussion up just few minutes. We are broadcasting live from -- it is the first day of training camp the rain didn't bother them. Thunder and lightning a little different will moved indoors and will be back with the in just a couple of minutes here on Sports Radio WE yeah.
