But more than anything else I woke up with a big smile on my face. Just -- about last night again and and Michael what was her name. I -- that Michael put it best yesterday when he made the point. How honored we art that is get the chance to sit and talk with some of the people we talked with last night all the people we've talked with last. How much fun it is every year to be able and -- the tradition which runs itself.
Yeah it it's entertaining it's humbling. The people you talked to are very insightful they tell you things that you know even though you were watching it. You didn't know some the stories behind the scenes so. For example we find out things about curt Schilling's ankle we thought he knew everything we thought we knew all about. Doctor bill Morgan and this risky surgery. While we didn't -- in L. We find out behind the scenes stuff from Bill Belichick. Talking with -- Romeo -- now about of the quarterback situation and how toward brown became a quarterback in the first place. A Bill Russell and stand zones were fantastic. They picked -- act on the road.
Everybody out there -- the story of Sam Jones. And hit too hard it's what at least I hit until last night was the story next time. Andy and -- the tale about. The albums the next night. Philadelphia 76ers. Will comes with hotel picks him up there were great. -- in mop takes him all welts on child's upper or like he. Like she did every time Sam -- Philadelphia. They drive game together Celtics fans knew that Wilt Chamberlain and -- into the game and the --
and Bill Russell and sandals -- these folks having dinner. At at -- mom's house and taking naps that are how to -- and it says it sometimes Thanksgiving. On the road at his house so he sent he took into the game and and -- told them. Don't come to the point tonight.
Didn't say anything to -- all day as they're driving and -- say a word they get to the arena and all will senses. In the patent.
When Sampson you can't sit at the San adults -- at the fairgrounds. On government to debate so we went into the paint. And will it. Became separated regarding our bodies disappear from the -- Andy found himself from the ground and it will that to them. Coming back in stamps that not tonight and that.
huddle he says and read calls the same play again and that -- who's right. Bob Cousy -- of play but -- of good stuff good stuff on night but really what our record it's out that I mean and all of them this was the biggest crowd -- It -- that. It's the biggest crowd I've leprosy and they did tell Leo one of them members of the board said they cancel a record number of tickets for the event which was throw. There are little things that you just don't realize. Had a chance afterwards to just say hello for a few minutes to Bill Belichick and Roy brown. And you know that the Belichick wins with just breathing. With Jerry York and Jack parker. And he says he said it's easy when you think about you know they play against -- high school play against each other college. And and no other coaching against each other and their records are basically identical right I mean it is you and they did a great job on the video talking about.
Is it was at thirteen frozen fours for Jack nine frozen fours for Jerry. I'll pull out a number of win both album 800 wins plus in their careers. You know one guy. Is playing your boss university playing it be the other guys playing it BC. One guy goes awaits you you know Bowling Green with the national championship comes back to BC the program is in shambles. He built to back up -- a championship program BC wins in 2008 beat you wins in 2009. On and on. You know one guy from from Watertown one guy from -- It really is an amazing story and to have championship contenders. In the same area. It'll be you BC that's 12 national titles a great in the same -- I mean that that's happened before. You go North Carolina duke in basketball that's happened. But Mike just ASCII and Roy Williams our boys -- grow up together and play against each other. I think this is probably the most unusual story. It in American collegiate.
Ports I was the story bill was talking about afterwards he says the do you think about the story of these two guys and and -- a little things though the little connections that get made Jack parker asked for and wore number six at Boston University. Because Bill Russell was his favorite player. And and as he said Bill Russell the greatest player in team sports history and and that's why he wanted to wear number six was because of Russell. And Russell's therein Samsung robbery that they call presented Sam Jones and.
Cause you know -- arbour said last night. Talking with Sam and and bill. You have two guys here. Who won 21 championships between. That for a they have -- if they'd destroy their rings -- had those at 21 championship rings. And and as as bill -- was talking last that. Ridiculous thought. And that thought is that the eight consecutive. Championships at the Celtics won. I think that -- is a bit underrated. It's under it -- it's -- if that's possible it's out taillight underrated and in May and may not be under rated for those of you who saw it if you're seventeen years old and you saw. It is you start when you were nine and ended when you were seventeen. And you saw the Celtics went championship after championship after championship -- live you know all the stories. But for people like me weren't alive when that streak was going on. It is under rated. Because there are so many. Stories. Of each individual championship for example Bill Russell talking last night about -- playing Cincinnati. And you know they have home court advantage best of five series they lose game one of the theories at all at home then they went. And they win game two then they lose game three so they're down two games to one to Cincinnati in the of lots home court advantage. And they come back they win that -- they win that series and they win the championship how many times. Where they down how many times were they not the favorite how many times that it -- say to themselves are it -- 14. Straight championship I don't know we can win five. I want to -- or -- 15 and Harada a Africa -- six are we as good are we getting older. All these things yet they won eight straight it will never be matched before unconvinced. But two things will never be done again in sports nobody's gonna break Joe DiMaggio is 56. Game hitting streak ain't happening. And nobody. Is gonna win eight consecutive championships. Anywhere in any east and -- happen.
And although the little connections can you get to choose who presents. That's that's one of the things the when -- an honoree you choose who presents. And Ken Hodge chose the man who traded form Milt Schmidt who is I mean he's one of my favorite people ever. And one liners going last year was bunny have a and I I was talking with -- before the before the event you know just re acquainting hadn't seen in one. And I sit tight because he's an avid golfer and played much last month or so -- had had pneumonia and hospital. Hit in the same way at nine ones -- 291. And as I said last night it looked like Bennett 51 forget about ninety. And he had to go rape your whip dull an iPod to its funny with a woman Nancy Kerrigan -- never met Nancy Kerrigan before last. She was presented by her husband Jerry Solomon and and you could you could tell listening tour and her parents -- their last night. She was in all.
I mean the first is that what might do you believe I'm up here. On the same stage on the same night with all these other guys. And and and Curt Schilling -- up there and you want to call and are very hot.
That she should be knocks on by you'll get these -- way honor. It's yes it is such a one night it's such a good time. It is so enjoyable for you always set it as I said last night at an element it is the family reunion for Boston sports. -- minute lecture last night from -- On why. Usaid meeting Spain was the second biggest upset in the history of United States soccer. And what's the big and he Cortez mine he's the analyst off topic that US beating England one Neil back in 1930s. And an editor at. All up top -- And and I'll I'll Robert -- and it's fun and it is get a chance. In a good hour happened back. Almost two hours because the couldn't get folks -- from the fooled in the cocktails some and the schmoozing to get into the them though of them all. We get started late but we still finished it on you know pretty good time got everybody out of it.
If there is a criticism it's that there aren't too many people to talk to. Keep ball as well as strange as that sounds. You have. Docket that includes. Curt Schilling Nancy Kerrigan. Jack parker Jerry York Troy Brown sand Jones -- you have all these folks on stage. -- really. You you wanna spend time talking with all of you want 25 minute half -- talking these folks. And he had seven at ten minutes and sometimes. Like in the case of Curt Schilling takes the microphone that's one question. At fifteen minutes later. Did you and sometimes it goes over but it's all good stuff and you just wish you could focus on. One person. Or one group. That idea. I have an idea and an idea. I think. Next year. Or. Two years -- They should honor. All that all of the Celtics who won consecutive championship. So. It's on stage at the but but that was also part other -- and saying. That's it that's not you that that group you're gonna bring all the Celtics in meet at the 63 team. Load. He had Bob Cousy and -- team public check as a rookie he got Bill Russell on that team. And Jones and a team that Tom writes in on it to have -- hall of famers in the 63 and yet. -- so all those guys. Who are alive and vibrant and telling great stories unfortunately we have read with this anymore but. Do this we have some great basketball minds. Enjoy spending time together and enjoy. Telling stories that have to be nice even year like the fiftieth anniversary this. Where the thirtieth anniversary is bring them together and honor.
Good idea and and it would be fun I mean. Some guys show up just that to pay their respects to be part of the night. Shelling as he was coming off the stage Johnny Pesky waiting for on the god given a big hug got John public check there. On Casey Jones there tests the yen and pay tribute to Sam Jones there they're teaming up Tommy -- and was there last night. It's it's just so much fun I did the other thing you've said in the past and I agree with. Is that the current teams. Have to try harder to get some of their people there not not because it helps the event the event -- it would be good for those players to see this would be good to have and understand.
A soft former patriot. Christian Fauria daughter last night John -- was there and -- never been when he was there with his wife. And and I was talking to them before the event started right and it's it's so what happens are we we can stand here. The entire night we actually suggested this is just part of it is actually at the preamble there's actually a ceremony -- sit down and and there's going to be your presentation going to be interviews so he had no idea. What the traditional wasn't -- maybe we can do a better job. Explaining. That it is because I think we assumed since we've done it and we've seen it we assume. People know exactly what it is in a lot of people don't.
props to NASA and I believe NASA puts together than the videos. And -- happens voice I think was the voice on the videos last night restaurant traffic that that to the I am pretty sure an ass and does them and date they will televise this you'll see -- weaker. But they do great job those videos and it's so much bond. You know and and it sees him Jones Macon bank shots and seek and high scoring goal.
They'll just the video in the beginning. Of the -- look. We we. Don't -- time on Sports Radio talk about this is not. I guess we we do appreciate where we lived but is that I -- of people like yeah right I know it's great. But every once in -- you do have to step back. -- And not even you don't have the quite abruptly music for that accurate 2000 not to go back -- amendments that video in the beginning. You have ABC. Championship in 2001 hockey championship you've got a patriots championship in 2001. You've got the patriots in 2003. Yet the patriots in -- got the Red Sox in 04 in -- include patriots and 05. An unknown that is -- beat a patriots before the Red Sox in 07. He got beat you in on nine got BC again in no way. A lot of stuff happening there.
And they they do a great job putting it altogether and get. I mean everybody was in the -- the minute that thing finished it was like man get this thing go -- and it. That's -- cities can be seen be used come back. Against Miami 31 with a minute left in and it's shaking your head as as you know you know the result. It's a minute left in the game but it pulled the -- with three minutes left in the game. And and and tells the story that they had a TV time like three minutes. And he didn't have the courage political. And get ready to back out after the TV timeout when I got to do this so call a timeout. After the TV timeout just Eaton Eaton set it up and pulled goalie. -- I never knew the deet tails of curt Schilling's. Trip to the ball park for game one of the World Series. We only about bloody sock we only about you know what it had to go through and we all know that. I didn't know may be other people know I just didn't pay attention. I know that when he got to the park at 3 o'clock for game one he wasn't pitching. Derek Lowe was pitching. And Derek Lowe had been told in the morning he was pitching and and Curt Schilling told the train at 6 o'clock in the morning.
6 o'clock that morning woke up call Chris guarantees something is wrong. Is his ankle had swollen overnight woke up in an extreme pain in his knee down Delhi is blood red. You know he's going to the park he's thinking okay I'm I'm not gonna Pitts told his wife I'm not pitching Friday -- left split with notes -- on -- right what could he can't get -- right told us live. When he had come to the game with them. I'm not that you don't know -- about. And he gets apart dug in their bellies filming. A players only video because it's telling says it's -- this -- has -- so it's. He gets a part in the videos on -- tells their ballot in turn camera. Really turn camera Miller -- Korea. I'm not pitch and he should help meet Mirabella I don't and yet again I need you to help me get into depart saw a lot of good -- trousers he's doctor bill Morgan. Bill Morgan looks at Schilling gives them -- once over and says. And answer -- and that's it and he feels better.
And the and he said immediately that the color starts to returned with lag from his need to. I mean immediately the pain is gone doctor Morgan just -- stitch which had been or shelling cities hack about a doctor Morgan. At Andy says he steps out of the dugout at 3 o'clock. Any goes all crap. He forgot to call as wife and teller that he was pitching. Andy knows he's gonna be in trouble now because he had left the house and told her yeah I'm not pitching and how -- that he step and out there and he has pitching is great stuff. I the whole night was a blast and it. Like I've always said I'll go as well as they keep inviting me we we have such a good time I was driving home with my son last night and set to job. Job put quotation fingers -- people got the puck to just two day. Terry Francona a -- and you go out its last night we get to talk to these people we get that. -- shoot the breeze -- it was a blast.
