Patriots Offseason Talk

You got some ma. Offseason construction going on no not at Fenway Park -- actually is going on but some offseason construction going on. Down at Gillette Stadium where. He got an entire off field organization. That asked to be redone before the on field organization can be redone. You've got while 11 departure that were positive love. Which is Josh mcdaniels theirs. A couple that we think are possible we certainly think Scott pioli is a likely candidate to be the GM in Kansas City right. Now we think dom capers may be gone from the coaching staff. According to the Boston Globe today we think -- ceiling may be gone from the coaching staff surprises me a little bit Sealy. Capers doesn't surprise me. Pioli and mcdaniels don't surprise me -- surprises me. Because he's been here for ten years has done a great job. As a head coach who who has a commitment to special teams. I -- unless he's looking you know progress up that latter he's lookin' for a coordinators job or or something more than a special teams job -- surprises.

Maybe it's more money. Certainly could be socialist it would be surprising -- mean special teams coaches. Are usually at the bottom of that matter you're talking about. I don't know why. And they have a very important job and it's politics when and how many times. He felt like he was really connected to the team when he was working with special teams because. He had contact with everybody special offensive players -- deep sense of LA especially when when the rosters were a lot smaller so. Your. Your third corner. -- your fourth corner. In the late seventies and early eighties. Was probably playing on special to right and a lot closer to being in the games so rosters are smaller and you talk and everybody but. Then there's one thing and I I was that thinking about that this morning. -- You talk about the reconstruction is going on the construction going on an excuse me at Gillette Stadium. I think it comes down to this for a lot of people and tell me if you if you agree not. As long as Belichick is still here. I really think people get all that nervous I doubt I agree. Members of the front office or members of the coaching staff now they will get nervous about players and we sat here and a lot of it every -- just thanks written. Thanks field phone calls about Adam Vinatieri going to Indianapolis. War what are they going to do about Socrates annually. I think it's different for players but. Fans in and the lieutenant -- here but the future. I think fans. Appreciate. Lieutenants that much you know. Really understand because there's a colon secrecy. Now. Surrounding Foxboro football operations. No one really understands what Scott pioli really do. How influential is Josh mcdaniels. I think they have a vision of what goes on Foxboro when it comes to coaching staff you'd you'd have a vision of Bill Belichick. Bleary eyed either 3 o'clock in the morning 5 o'clock in the morning act that take it up again dad sitting there figuring out. That one thing he can get to take advantage of the Cardinals right Ravens or anybody else. And I really believe that most people. Yeah it has me. The group operation. Politic actually delegates to coaches and those guys watch a lot of film to. And work Mary -- they have suggestions for him and there's a way things are done and they come -- they had what do we do it this way. So -- that happens on the coaching staff and in the front office -- with pioli maybe if Scott pioli. A politic has final say anyway it's Belichick really fine in the players though if pioli leaves we'll just plug somebody else -- there. And I don't really blame fans for thinking that way because how many supposed to now.

I think I I think most fans around here have had a yeah. I don't mean this religiously. -- trinity at the top that they felt you couldn't do without. -- it was the owner Bob -- it was Bill Belichick. And it was the quarterback Tom. That was the trinity as long as you had those three guys in place. Q were you were going to be a championship caliber football team you have those three guys. Ironically. You missed one of those three guys this year basically the entire season. And you were still pretty good.

Yeah you're in a playoff mix and killed. 7 o'clock on the final game you know after your final game you know three hours after your game. You gorilla -- still had a chance it is to participate in the post seasons so. It's these are these are significant losses. But nobody knows how significant.

Well it'll it'll actually be kind of am and in a strange sort of way. I think it could it could you know change the energy. Around their cats to get some -- bases some some fresh ideas. You know and and it may even be some of the same people. But they'll be in different positions. So they'll bring unique perspective. Whoever it is and and I think the offensive coordinator will likely be promoted from within. Whoever it is you'll bring a different take to the position that's.

Your point I think the I think that happened. With the job that Josh mcdaniels once held in Foxborough but the coaching assistant Jeff -- Belichick did it back in the day. For the Baltimore Colts at that time. There was a process of breaking down now and he learned that from his dad and this is how it's done. And Woody came to Foxboro still mean as recently as. 20012002. Our members think Bill Belichick on a plane. Looking at his laptop looking place but also with a sheet of paper and having had these have sheets of paper -- national. A color coded system. And he would actually write out the place. It's only six or seven years ago it's so. When you have a different coaching assistant every year every couple years these guys bring new ideas on how. The play breakdown. Will go and they don't even do it like that anymore the last six or seven years they've changed their system not because politics as. Let's do it differently. But because these kids relatively have come up and said well I did it this way. And we still have the result but it's a little more efficient it's little cleaner are you okay with that in -- Right so. Do people as you said new people bring wrinkles. Helpful wrinkles to the already established system. And maybe that's what's going to happen of Foxborough because I don't think the foundations -- if not going to change the Patriots are suddenly going to become a 43 team. Tampa two team in looking for different kind of players they already know. What kind of players they want what kind of system they can run but you can bring in people fresh set of -- who can give you some ideas that --

Four and by the way they've been going through this stuff for a while there you know from Romeo Crennel and Charlie Weis and an Eric Mangini they've had. You know keep personnel. Depart. I have never seen anybody depart. With a glowing tribute from the head coach that I saw come out yesterday afternoon that was something and had I mean it was almost beyond anything I've ever seen from him.

And and -- shore. Is sincere is definitely sincere. I absolutely but. I think it had to happen because. Belichick is aware. Either from his own. Viewing or listening. To you know radio and TV or TV and radio. Or somebody else telling him he's aware that there's a perception out there. -- can't leave him.

Right well did he knows what the Mangini. Departure was like -- not stupid he's very aware you know he knows what's going on in the world. And and he didn't even want there to be a question about the hair so and and by the way if and when Scott pioli -- Kansas City I think you'll see a similar. Kind of of departure. Release from Bill Belichick I think it will be very glowing. About the job -- the appeal Lee's done here the work he's done on behalf of the team. You know wishing him well I I think it will be very similar.

You know I was surprised him that was it was good to see that about -- I was surprised to see. His comment on on Tony Dungy. I think you and we put the right way that it was a well very well worded stay well crafted it really was yeah. You read that statement and it is it's a statement in the paper -- are -- yesterday you know they my email rather they send it to us I'll find it but. And I'll I'll read it to you guys and you tell me but. The first thing -- thought it would. Relief you can coach. Never said that.

I mean we have the we have felt in the past during the spy gate stuff we thought that that versatility and are definitely took few little veiled shots at Bill Belichick in the way they -- there's a question I got some gap I mean it wasn't Eric Mangini like I mean there was no. You know is he going to shake hands with -- at the end of the game or is and he it never got to that level that you knew that there was at least some. A little tense moments going on. I'm not surprised that -- checked put out a release. On the on the retirement of one of the great coaches in the game and yeah and I and I think it was I think it was requested to him. -- somebody says hate the you know we'd like to comment from bill but about Tony Dungy is retirement. You know. You don't you don't ask for -- to comment on every coaching change in the National Football League nor Woody. But when one of them did really good coaches in the game retires. I can see where you'd be asked him to say something about.

And his RBI after my apartment and kicked us but just look at this quote here. People often say that teams reflect their head coach and he's a program but before that. People often say that teams reflect their head coaching. That can be said of Tony Dungy is -- Which are consistent winners every single. Yeah. Yeah. Don't know Nolan. Second guessing what he said that that's very -- Tony has been such a fixture fixture in this league yeah. But his absence will take some getting used to. He may be leaving the sideline. Good coach ever actually I think that -- that's pretty good I've always liked the way it probably I probably would too much bought dollars at -- rate I mean he sets up any it was not cheap -- said no comment I'm just focused on the Patriots don't talk about other teams I root for the Patriots are my team we appreciate.

I you know it was funny because in my email I got battling Bill Belichick releases in there. I got the wondered about about dungy but but but John -- When I've read a person. There can't be any questions in anybody's mind a lot low blow but politics like this when very much -- was didn't want -- ago. First all. Bill Belichick I think has the real healthy respect for what a great franchise the Denver Broncos have -- I think he has a real respect for pat -- as an owner and I think he knows that Josh mcdaniels just landed one of the plum coaching jobs in the NFL.

Now I have said this before. About. Our profession it's amazing and I'm very thankful for for the job I'm an an an of like a very. The guy with no game whatsoever -- no game. And just a passion love for sports is able to take that love for sports in the and make it to me that's that's pretty cool that. I'm always thing. Allowed allowed the job that never get told -- Let's think about the level of his. Greatness that -- agree that rightward but they think about how blessed Josh mcdaniels. Josh mcdaniels. Was a very good. High school quarterback. But not great. Played division three football at a place that never John -- never -- Johnson & Johnson all I know I guess it's just so. He played it -- in Cleveland played John Carroll in the same conferences you know Baldwin-Wallace. Who plays that. Paper football went there's a quarterback became a receiver and and nick his stereo was escorted. So playing. Obviously not going to the pros. Becomes a coaching. Assistant will graduate assistant. At Michigan State. Lands into any coaching assistant Al falls to a coaching assistant job in New England making about. And then. 50002. I would have no exaggeration. It's about 15000 dollars a year 1516000. Out here. It's uncomfortable being a Jamaican make it might it typically got a family. We -- got -- yeah our picture and I don't know if you they weren't married at the time but you know you want to have a girlfriend intimate squat axiom will be years are not going to see a movie being the -- assistant because he does that -- time to do it. So. To do acted to really have much of a football career. Start at the very bottom of the organization. And then reach a point where you're coaching Tom Brady coaching under. Bill Belichick. And then one day. In and a nasty winter. You get a head coaching job in Denver replacing Mike Shanahan making two million dollars all year and this all started. When he was 2324 years old he's 32 so in the last eight years he's gone from from making like a few thousand dollars a year to millions.
