What if they held the Patriots Friday. And you basically didn't talk much Patriots because it would appear that that's going to be the case. Technically at the Patriots Friday we are at Gillette Stadium. Will have our Patriots Friday irregulars whatever. Congregation of players stepped through the door. And in the whole rest of today I have a feeling Michael holly will be talking a lot of base.
As my man said in training day we we knew where at Gillette Stadium. We aren't we Shell out -- collective the program. Helen holly should go is here now with -- Bill of the dale and holly showed it to let stadium. I'm right here Brighton Massachusetts very happy but realize -- and there's not going to be a lot of football talk today I don't think because this mark this year things.
Well we will as the day goes on -- and our regulars come through here will talk with them Peter King will join us later on as he always does but there -- one story that's been. Well on everybody's mind cents last night. At a time when we actually thought that the Red Sox ownership was flying to Texas to close the deal. And they fly back from Texas and say the deal is dead is a couple of parts of this whole thing that got me a little baffled -- have to it meant. For the second time in a week John Henry has made a public pronouncement that has -- totally baffled. Earlier in the wake when he said -- ten year deal for us all of -- said why would you say that even if you think that why would you say that. And I cannot come up with a reason why he would make the email announcement that he made last night.
What him and you can't come up with a reason there is no reason -- tell me what it is the reason is it's over. I can be and it could be seen here's the thing Michael even -- it is all over it doesn't make sense to say why not. What do you gain what are you looking for you're telling your you're you are and and forming with the fan base they don't get your hopes up about Mark Teixeira. They're asking for too much money we made him a fair deal but now they're going to a stratosphere. That we're not comfortable with if that's actually what happened.
Well and and like in and an and I think yeah you're right yeah I I I understand. I mean I I've heard all the different scenarios one John Henry is calling Scott Boras to -- certainly possible. You know Scott for a fifth in that room in Texas yesterday and says. I gotta tell you boys that we got 200 on the table that's where you're going to -- ago and they all shake hands they thanks very much sealer. And and then make the pronouncement that we -- on the email last night it's possible that's what they're doing. But even that doesn't make cents because if you don't get Mark Teixeira. If you think the Yankees in the Angels in the national Terrell bidding against each other.
You want them to be an even higher. You want them to pay even more you don't want to take the Red Sox off the table if you're not going to get -- but the Yankees spend 1240 warm up that's what it today.
Well I think the Red Sox are. Aware that the Yankees aren't in this thing that's won in 2. So what if if the number is. Let's say the numbers to fifteen let's say the Washington Nationals. It's got bourses Jones-Drew a walk in the Washington Nationals have presented a ten year 230. Million dollar offer. And Scott Boras told the Red Sox yesterday. You don't hear the nationals go to 250 to sixty to seventy that's fractured business now what your business is moving on going to plan B plan C plan. So the national spent two point. 230 to 45 doesn't make different -- there in the National League. And that's not your business.
You don't and in in my opinion John Henry made that his second mistake of the week. I don't say anything until -- the press conference where Mark Teixeira put that on. I don't say anything to anybody I do business the way the -- been trying to do biz why all along I don't say anything to anybody. I I -- whatever happens behind the scenes happens and I. I don't I don't try to eliminate us I don't try to of that to to tweaks Scott Boras -- or Mark Teixeira I don't say anything to anybody.
Well I would I don't I don't think this is a mistake and all I do think it was a mistake. Saying that I would never give a player ten years we don't believe in that we may have which may have been exactly what the other way it today. But but in terms of things up there right now. Back to my original point the Red Sox have their own business to worry about. That means they have other free agents to pursue I'd say go after a pitcher that makes everything better starting pitcher. Who can give you fifteen to seventeen win and maybe that's Derek Lowe who knows. But you have your business to take care of in terms of free agency and he had your your business to take care of at home. Your fan base is wondering. What's going on they keep hearing that the Red Sox are pursuing Mark Teixeira. They hear. That the the brain trust has gone to Texas for a face to face meeting. With Teixeira and Scott boards and then he's going to leave them hang. Until he he. Is wearing a nationals Jersey and Washington DC.
I think that's right I -- Noe just the opposite yeah I absolutely leave everybody hang and I don't want anybody to know what I'm -- what I'm Dillon. I I I will stand by this for the second time and a week I think John Henry's made a mistake.
I don't see it I mean I couldn't I couldn't disagree with -- now. If they are bluffing. In that your question. Are they bluffing or not. If if they're not bluffing -- it is what it is says that the man of Foxboro says and -- arm out and James Brown but. If if if today. If they're telling the truth and it's over -- You move on to the next free agent target got a pretty good team with a game seven of the American League Championship Series you're going to be our right. Not better make some phone calls to Mike lol and say hey Mikey we still love you you -- be a Boston Red Sox. But if they are blocked. -- they are blah. Boris. Is not -- a quarter. Because if he's mature. About this big offer out there you better go ahead and and close the deal. Because now this team knows it's just the opposite of what you said dale this team now knows. If they believe the Red Sox.
But they're not and it. Might even lower their offer that are competing against Boston John Henry did that they're not a factor so we weren't you.
You play tennis again wealthier here's what I disagree with. All that's up that you just said. You tell Scott Boras and mark to share in that Roman Dallas you don't say anything publicly public pressure may you be like you don't need public pressure or you don't know why. Why why what how it's public pressure going to change Scott Boras does --
Make you need public pressure if if you're bluffing. So now you basically cost -- sports your mole. And now. Not only this -- Boris no you told him privately you told the world publicly. And you also told whoever the competition is because what dale. Quite frankly. I don't know with the competition is that the Red Sox don't know this -- this ticket to a different stage. Now they are letting whoever that anonymous team is out there divorced intolerable was a town that anonymous team. You got it. You gotta go ahead and you guys you you put as much money down as you think you have. But we're out of this thing. And it could put Boris in a very difficult position beat nobody can hit it gives that other team. Ammunition you don't need to give them it gives them ammunition against abortion if Boris is back in into a corner now. Dusty defeat does he risk losing the Red Sox which is -- attack the Red Sox are the boogie man. That he is used against other teams and other teams other boogie man that he is -- against the Red Sox.
Michael I don't disagree with any of that my point is you don't do -- publicly. You do all that stuff privately you tell Scott Boras -- enjoy DC enjoy LA whatever it is thanks very much they've done that with him once before. They break they got in the car and they headed for the airport they -- they didn't say anything publicly. And I make up the call on the way to the airport and a whole way to match. You don't -- this publicly you don't gain a thing guess there is nothing to be -- other than making yourself look --
Guess what their history against cup wars is pretty good of the game if if they are playing them right now could pick -- dale we really don't know what's going on. If their if their talent -- troop men and that's that's the way they decided to. In negotiations. They probably told Scott has got thanks a lot. A lot of fun talking business with you you're always a pleasure always a sweetheart. Happy holidays we're about to tell our fans that this thing is over there to on the -- if not. They have away with stop wars.
And they usually get their way with him. Always win against they don't do it but no they don't always win against him when that knows all they've lost before Johnny Damon -- lost. John Henry -- had a deal and it back he thought. They had an agreement that whatever offered Damon had Boris was going to bring back in Henry and allow him to match -- didn't who who was the who was general manager. -- But it all started. With that was that was after the what was the what was that after the this. I'd I think it was -- days -- the gorilla suit and the -- The deal was not general manager -- Neitzel was the other you know still the same -- but I'm talking about just talk about ownership talking about the general manager here -- his dealings with cow bores. I mean he'd be don't like them you'll in the Daisuke negotiations. Mop up because I -- limit Scott Boras had no outrage.
He yet -- the old one because there was nothing else for them to do.
That leverage that Scott Boras tried to use with that we'll take this guy back to Japan. I'll yeah and everybody believes that nobody thought that was right but it came down to the last second. He won that negotiation. He's winning the Jason Varitek thing there's no market for Jason Varitek and quite frankly get up. I don't think Leo Leo had in the GM we don't want Johnny Damon about the outside.
That's what Coco Chris what that you just mentioned a name out in time.
He didn't win was Jason Varitek December 2004. Why not they won a gold planning against themselves that they want and gave them more money than they want it. Are you sure -- get more money they wanted to yeah. What what -- you so sure that was there anybody else bidding against I don't know I don't I don't think snowballed and they given more than any ill which.
Maybe they said the market that this is this is our value for Jason Varitek and that's -- every player deal that's why. I am going to dismiss the Johnny Damon I think -- I'm convinced they don't want Johnny Damon back. They don't want Pedro Martinez back they were in the goat and the negotiations. And offered him just enough. Where they felt comfortable walking away but would Jason Varitek maybe said maybe except themselves. We value him as a -- to have million dollar -- nine million dollar catcher they paid the main house.
Yet they okay -- out they had so okay I'm what they got. I start and that's why but but the but the point is what we're we disagree strongly. Is that you don't think John Henry should just add anything. And I think if if you feel like the guy I I think there's nothing to be gained if you feel like you're being played. By Scott Boras you've got to do something of that thing to do is not to sit there and take it.
You do what when it's over it's over. I don't know has there been an announcement has there bene -- pending physicals. I don't think it's over and my aunt and -- in which case you made a mistake you don't say anything until it's over why you don't think I don't day. In for the same reason you don't say we're not going to ten years. You got nothing to gain. -- even if your talent but there's nothing to pick.
Difference between the ten year thing in this. Ten years you're still actively negotiating. At least were led to believe they're actively negotiating with the player though you know tipped your hand. In this case if they're telling the truth. -- don't want this guy as basic.
So I can say anything about it's over it's going to be a Boston Red Sox mold of reps are one moment on. And we want to let our fans now. That we made a very fair offer even though we're not going to take that number Baldelli and I don't we're not letting the fans know any what what we're letting our fans know that'd be yeah on the what were comfortable. Doing and you know other Red Sox. They got a little -- and we assume that we've seen them spend money whether it's on Daisuke in the posting for me. Whether it's on JD drove. Yeah you know if anybody else. Resigning. Resigning David Ortiz. To any or spending money on draft picks scouting and development they spend money. But if they're saying this is too much money for a read between the lines people are smart you read between the lines you think. Texas Rangers part to. Offer to -- is coming -- Mark Teixeira maybe if the nationals ten years 235 million dollars I don't know.
Activate this may Welby over but I'll believe when I see -- with the jurors in the cattle on. And to me you play those cards is close to the best as you can until it's over and and you say whatever you want publicly you do whatever you want. Yeah you pull off frank Wren we're never going to do we did business -- those guys again do whatever you want. It doesn't make any sense to ever tell anybody where you're rat and -- DO and and where if if you did decide you wanted to stop there in the public. If you did decide that. Nobody's better than the Red Sox -- and stop back channels to members of the media -- see -- don't stick John Henry's name on -- now now Orton not united plants whose -- here. Because I don't think they should do anything but it might kill you can't stick John Henry's name.
So so you want them to be. You want them operate in anonymity. As opposed to having the owner of the team come out and say we can't do it. You're you're what you're the one who said he I think it was earlier this week or last week. One was complaining. About the doubles becoming out of Las Vegas with Terry Francona.
And what they say anything if they're not going to tell the truth now -- complaining it in there that there's a chance that this guy told the truth about it.
And it's not all poor. You've got nothing new to gain why do we know now I know I don't know announcement.
I hear that you're dill. -- take her to the last hole. Cause you label her O you know I got a John Henry's email list associations are over I'd want to let you know foreknowledge. He'll say we did. Before he starts at 10 o'clock show in Boston. It probably has already you know what -- I wouldn't be surprised. If if John Henry on the true. I would be surprised if we get an announcement before 2 o'clock. I think its interest in what is -- count.
I don't feel important. --
Which which is what matters. In my opinion you have two options here. One as Anaheim and one as the nationals I'm going to take Brian Cashman is word. Because I think that if he was asked flat out are you win this any wise. He would disseminate you know -- a comment on ongoing negotiations he would not say it's not ops. I'm gonna say the Brian Cashman would be more fruitful and so so -- anything bigger they're not going to get these it's not we're not Emmitt. -- I felt so I'm going to say at Washington. And ally. And as we look at it year both of those teams we have this argument earlier this week about how the the Red Sox were going to have to outbid everybody helped by a significant amount. I think it's true for those two teams and knock the Red Sox I think Anaheim would have to outbid significantly because at least -- led to believe. That the west coast is not exactly what Mark Teixeira as white as a mom and nationals would have to outbid because let's be honest winning is not going to be an option for a one. So I think those two teams would have to command and blow the doors off this thing they have to say okay ten years 200 million. Or whatever number it is now nine years to -- group. Twenty million whatever it may have to do that in order to get this done I don't think the Red Sox add two and I think that's why they wouldn't.
Yeah I think. I think are having somebody. If this -- you know we have to keep saying this if this is true. If it is if this is not a bluff and there is another team out there and Scott Boris is not lying about the presence of this other team. That is willing to put up huge numbers. We're looking at probably a ten year deal. And we're probably looking at. A minimum of 215. Million dollars. I think probably not a lot of data to -- I was gonna say 200. An and I think it's -- nine or ten year deal at a minimum of 200. And there's an opt out in -- you know what the Red Sox would would do a twenty million dollar deal I don't -- ten year they would -- it because 200 million for ten years twenty million figure that. I the owner of the team told me if I don't I don't know are the teams -- it but if they felt like. They were fifteen because that assists look at that total dollars. They offered let's say they offered 18185. And they felt like they were fifteen million dollars away from getting Mark Teixeira I think it would be creative enough. The close it feels like it's as low as 200 I don't understand about the owner of the team's -- now do ten years. But I think it's a stupid number it's a crazy number. That -- probably probably being too conservative right now we took forty. Now whoever is offering at the Yankees aren't and it's in the Red Sox aren't in Webber's put up that number can't afford. That the Washington Nationals they can't afford they definite candidate and the they're payroll last year with 55 million dollars.
And the irony is it in one of the roughest times roughest I can not economic times. In the history of this country. The team and our nation's capital. Is over spending spending money that it doesn't have. As our as our leaders tell us that we need to cut back in -- It unemployment as high and that some of the biggest names in finance some of the biggest names -- in the in the country. Have to cut back. From their staff because that he has the they can't they can't balance the books. A lot of these companies are in the red in the Washington Nationals. The almost irrelevant and not even ten years old Washington Nationals. I'm going to put an offer like that on --
Why do you think. And I don't know who was in the traveling party John Henry and Theo obviously probably Larry Lucchino why do you think they went Texas yesterday. They thought they had a -- exactly. They thought. We're going to go wrap this up you don't make a trip to Texas to present another offer. I mean you do that's up over the phone over the backs they thought that they had a deal at some point at the end of their presentation Scott Boras said well you know. We've got better offers out there were -- bacteria. And I think John Henry got mad I think John Henry said you know dammit stealing any walked and ain't got on his Blackberry and he started. All bombs flying around the keyboard. And -- probably wrote something that in in hindsight of a good night's sleep he would have gone does -- started really going on. Yeah -- kind of no not to me now he's a very soft spoken quiet guy I understand that very -- we're talking about a guy who you know they went California. That call Scott Boras has blocked and in fact called said we're out of here he wasn't they got in the car and roll off. I think I think it's the way I was Denver's -- John Henry will -- it was you know it was them it was that the group. I you know I I think I think that that they went to Texas. Thinking they had a deal or at least the outline of a deal.
Dale if you tell me is Larry Lucchino setting up email yet very very very passionate guy. At times very seat of the pants guy Larry -- yes. John Henry. Sending and an email and angered some members of the media because he'd just walked out of a meeting and unproductive. Evan grant meeting. With. With Scott Boris.
Honestly. I don't see it. There's AM an article on SI dot com that is up about this says quote. The Red Sox haven't given up on the idea of signing Mark Teixeira according to multiple baseball sources they're just taking a break from the bidding on quote. That's what I think -- solace I think this is all. Until I see him put the Jersey and I have on I think it's all gamesmanship. Employees and and and it's why in my opinion. If you're John Henry you don't say anything to anybody.
Might be gamesmanship and and we've that it many times we'll say -- times dropped today. We don't know who's on the truth we don't know what this means could be. Very candid very honest comments from John Henry it could be negotiating. But. When negotiating you do what you have to do these guys are not stupid. Eight I don't they know they agent very well let but they know what he responds to that thing I just wrote read -- yeah. Was written by John name.
Who knows the agent very well to and who some people think he's in the back pocket of the agent. I would say that's I'd I'd say he stays at his guest house but then I I a note note note Johnny Damon is the -- guy absolutely.
And and he's the guy who wrote what I just rent. And an effective headline is sources. It's the Sox Dillon Teixeira. Source. Well a source who actually me who really wants them to still be in the Mark Teixeira right. I don't believe it's over until like -- put the Jersey. May be totally wrong he may be signing with the nationals I never believe that was an option. He may be signing with the Angels in which case you and I are totally wrong about the dynamics of that marriage. Nick says in our marriage -- our wife says we're not eleven there were eleven there. Pre. Pre -- there heavily Halloween ordeal with their --
