Every Tuesday at this time. We talk with Ken Rosenthal from fox sports and foxsports.com. Ken joins us on the AT&T hotline they can I you don't.
Did they are you you thought outer dried out yet. Actually I didn't get too wet. I ducked into that last. Into space in the Daria. Change stage I was very cold.
Can be read the Philadelphia inquirer this morning. Phil Sheridan which if -- column among many things he calls. Box Major League baseball's pet so he is hit the headline of the pieces tainted by television. And he's placing much of the blame on what happened last night on fox. I I know you have a relationship with -- to work the box where do you place the blame for last night's events.
I'm not just saying if we don't have anything to do. And if we had such influence game three -- not been played 10 o'clock at night at an okay and natural last night. It was baseball -- For us. And speaking on my own. Behalf here -- my my opinion of what we might think. We it would air the game was rained out. Played next day with the difference explain evident. So this is one time where. I don't know of that. We deserve blame there are times obviously one of the beautifully. And -- deserves. But. Again I would suggest if we had such power game they would not been played that in the live and -- game. Late Sunday night better -- night. -- What would've happened but it didn't happen that way and that to -- showed that.
Obviously we're not running -- sport. You know I I I I hole but blameless for what happened at the All-Star game when they ran out of pitchers in the game ended in the -- back -- defended him. I said it was the managers of that game brenly in Torre who screwed that thing up. But I think I think Bud Selig deserves a lot of blame for what happened here over the weekend. His unilateral decision that any World Series deciding game apparently has to go nine innings now I applaud. I think hell wouldn't share that with a fox baseball announcers.
Well how about the players more importantly. Okay and that really it is a sticking point though. Yes explain on this. Particular issue I wrote about this today. In -- it was in the way eroded dale is having it this is the World Series. You -- or World Series came to. -- Have World Series games played. Clement weather as it was last night in. The side issue of ocean into it with so much of the discuss. You have to have the best umpires and there are reasons why. The best umpires might not be your chief among them according to the umpires collective bargaining. An umpire cannot work in back to back World Series that's outrageous and need to be changed. And my main point is. You're talking about the game showcases.
We'll cannot I don't think that umpiring issue -- aside. I think I think Georgie should.
If you I understand it's huge issue but he decides to all of the other rained. Stop that was going on.
What does but have any power when it comes -- you the umpires or. Does that collected noted.
Collective bargaining. Agreement expires after 2009. And it's -- at best -- Actually -- I wrote that -- realized -- what I -- is he needs to get it changed yes. I mean the other rule the other rule here just -- guys now. In umpires -- is at an apartment now work back to back post -- there. Now I understand the logic -- now. You don't want to umpire weary and mentally or physically during the game wouldn't -- most important -- But even that want. One. The best guys were PLC at the World Series to the -- is that what you want to do the this is just something that needs to be addressed and I'm not -- Rip every umpire these guys aren't large to a great job but if your baseball just -- perception standpoint. -- watch how this issue probably will allow the perception that your best bombs might not be on the field.
you're not -- unbelievable you're not you're not saying I would. The umpiring in this post season has been embarrassing.
Remainder of the umpiring has no it's not been good I mean by and large plastic to -- it it criticized as for the most part they get right but -- there have been too many missed call. When you have umpires in. Two mistakes the World Series a bit.
To say nothing about a strike zone at that apparently is very fluid for many of these umpires.
Well that's supposedly was solved by requests that but if you watch the game you know would.
I tend to two game in the sixth inning. Which team if you feel like one team was hurt more than the other which team was hurt.
Well no question the Phillies the Phillies won. First of -- games should not be played at that. Those -- should be 2 okay. Second of all -- I Cole Hamels is no longer active. It like the -- chances a lot better. Being in a much -- out on the turnout which nobody knows but the rays have definitely dodged a bullet here this is not even a question about. Charlie Manuel would not talk to work last. I don't know exactly why but one he'd probably think that. Squished between one at the top of the six should not have been played in squat iron into maybe things change we over.
Yeah I just yeah I I do agree with that you can not in the World Series game I that this thing that's like yeah.
Like I totally agree that and you know what as I wrote today. That it happened. The outcry over the 92 All-Star I would have been compared to the outcry over what that would. -- common sense that he's as good. Logical even though the idea of changing rules and no World Series is a little bit -- And it raises a little bit of an unusual president of disturbing. But yeah we're talking about. Use common sense he used common sense with that decision but in averaged ten year old kid watching that game is that -- play. That's where the equation -- in the ballpark. He wanted I think guys to get back to the out -- element here. People always ask one of the game's start solely and that is a fair question and it's one that's been debated long. And I'm not as they take -- dispute is that going to be the explanation. Basically. -- age however in whatever it pays for the right okay. In order to -- it. Investment. It tries ticket maximum rate understandable. Aimed at they have determined that actual ratings or one games in at that particular time. Now have you addressed -- had to get around well Jordan stared at fox yes get the lap and yet there money. But there are ways to go around it and when viewed television deal next time. It EUS but less money in order to get maximum power over start. There are things that can be done and it's just. I mean it's always indicate short term thinking that long term thinking baseball think long term instead of grabbing that --
Does fox have ratings guarantees for its advertisers. Because I think they do this I might dollar basically what I just -- and I understand. I I I believe based on past practices then that there are ratings guarantees to the major advertisers. Which means that fox has in Italy.
It up right right and and yet probably I've heard that with other things I would imagine it applies here as well.
And to me that's the primary reason why there is no afternoon game. Just one afternoon game in the World Series because fox can't make its ratings guarantees at their planet you know 1 o'clock in the afternoon.
Right and again.
The afternoon game situations.
I'd like to see it I get a perfect world but if the games started earlier on the east coast people wouldn't he has. Much clamoring for the you have to I don't think and not nineteen. And we have Monday Night Football it starts at 9 o'clock every week so what -- real about it but at the same time. Those are. Real issues but I just describe about the fox paying all that money in eating it make the money back that's a real issue. If you want to change the way you do business with the television networks in and let in order to gain more control. -- that's something you can do something they've chosen.
And hope by the way let's talk about the World Series itself I mean actual games being played. I'll win the games have been played the Phillies.
Have been and have been in control here are you surprised that Tampa. Hasn't put up more of a fight against the Phillies. Charlie Manuel calling them like to.
I don't know that is. Old strike of FA until game or had a fight and game four that is kind of -- but their previous two losses Michael I want Ron. Game. They played so well so all you long. 200 there -- really know now like you know in game four. It certainly -- last night and really. Consider that the book is on the line they fought like crazy in the ecstatic if their run and succeed. So. If anything has surprised. It would be that Jamie Moyer in -- pitch so well. Against the rate. What's interesting is that that didn't surprise to fill in back. At least thought that those guys with two OK. Because Tampa Bay's hitters to -- Longoria parcel fastball -- it. That off speed guys we have success and that is what happened I just didn't believe that. Mortar implant will be good enough to make that all work.
Final question from me because I know you gotta get to a meeting about whether or not to actually play a baseball game.
I'd say outside but -- could that -- to get that beating good. For greater minds and arms waiting for the call.
So my final question Kevin Youkilis before game four I guess it was was presented the Hank Aaron Award the American League for best. Offensive player is this a precursor to something bigger or is that a consolation prize. Because -- somebody else is going to be the MVP.
So I don't know that a word. Was voted on by people with -- LB dot com or fans voted -- Oh clearly. It is different Award and MVP. It's your best offensive achievement. I know probably view with winning an Award -- on Aramis Ramirez when he at the National League and we have a fan vote that's the kind of thing that's going to happen. So. It was certainly has decent chance and EP but if I had to get the outcome. I would guess Pedroia one know you. But political and ethnic vote -- I did --
