Welcome back our -- three Dennis and Callahan is the fault lines that it we have always enjoyed reading the Boston Globe watching on NASA now reading on Yahoo! Sports dot com. Our friend that we have been able to have a program for. Reasons we won't get into right now -- joins us on the line.
Yeah I don't think -- the United States you know how men but. Glad. Glad you have me on.
I always life in cyberspace yeah. I guess in the you have like some friends and family members. Who don't they like Larry King they don't know how to get on the Internet they say what happened Gordon happened you you retire.
Yeah I tomorrow and is its best today you know like I can start with my folks you know -- have been but they don't -- that. On the laptop but three separate yeah I run into it. Particularly since the -- didn't exactly. You know. Mention that my departure. At the time I did leave a lot of people that they whatever happened to be you know but. You know it's it's it's a different it -- are obviously a much more national Dick Armey now in the end it's good I'm enjoying that they. You don't quite know who you're audiences in cyberspace like you do when that. You popping up on Nelson every night but. It's it's going to could change.
I'll certainly say this -- that your stuff is always good to read but only read it juxtaposed to Ken Rosenthal stuff about race and black people in Boston that that your stuff is like Pulitzer prize winning stuff if you're.
Yeah that's right I haven't had a chance to talk to Kenny about that when I'm I'm not quite sure where he was coming from. You know I mean it's it's. I mean I think I wrote. I can't to a three years ago just noting the fact that you know there were so few African Americans. On the Red Sox but also on baseball and -- any other team with the with the Red Sox having been the last team to integrate. In all but to suggest that that that the Red Sox or an organization. That lacks. Players hollered yeah is ridiculous it is.
One thing he noted that it's got nothing to do -- race but he mentioned that they would go after CC sabathia. Then he mentioned he might be reluctant to come here because. Everybody to make -- but. I was under the impression that they probably wouldn't even be in the bidding for sabathia what do you think Gordon.
Yeah I know I I think that that's exactly that case. I don't think they're going to be an on and sabathia that communications. I've gotten. I I think they're the expectation areas that. He either goes to Southern California which has been. His stated preference at least privately board you know the Yankees are going to make some absurd bitten in the Red Sox -- going to get in that --
A Gordon turning our attention to what we've seen unfold so far in this the division series it.
You guys are going to have to change your opened the road to read TI don't think that's going to fly much.
Guys like road to perdition now after what it is yeah. -- breaking just out of the simplest form is that is that overstating were understating the case whichever it may be that this -- about -- make -- lineup changes or over you know all the series by the lead -- batters Ortiz Rivera tech or Ellsbury struggling or -- or any of it isn't as simple as Tampa -- starters are dominating the Red Sox starters have been brutal.
Yeah I had I mean I think that's pretty fair and in you know. Back in April when when the race that swept the Red Sox for the first time down in the trop -- I looked at any day now but -- give the race permission. To print playoff tickets I can't say I really believed it at that time but. You know I think -- back to back collapses. But Beckett in Leicester. Have been historian of this series in and I don't think you can pin it on Josh we all know that that he's there's something wrong there. In that in the end Lester you know he. The race -- how many times have we heard the Red Sox say eight in October once -- in the tournament it's not necessarily about who the best team this but. About the team that's playing the best -- that -- I mean the race what they've done these last three nights this historic.
Yeah they're they're either losing to a better team clearly but in your mind over four games is there anything the Red Sox could have done differently that -- A -- and they may be at -- at 22 -- maybe give them a chance as clearly that just getting. Getting smoked here. And that Francona -- done to make the third term to maybe change the fortunes of the of his team in these first four games.
Well I you know I know Jerry there was so much discussion about him riding Beckett that as long as he did in. Can you look at the way that that that bullpen has performed in you know you can understand why he tried to get. Another inning out of out of Beckett -- I really don't you know I mean. Dropping Ellsbury sort of from the from the top of the order that wasn't going to make a difference guys. You know Johnny left side I think everyone here including myself assumed. That game three was going to swing things back. In the Red Sox favorite in. You know Francona. How -- those first three innings was out of -- caught his control so -- I don't I don't see how they can pin this when I teed up.
What happens if they with Daisuke was tomorrow does Beckett take the mound in game six and if he does. Why don't we expected to be any different and and don't you think there's some physical problem that. That is affected his philosophy velocity isn't going to be the same story in game six is it wasn't game to.
If that they're in the question to ask if such areas what it what are what are their IPO which you rather run out Paul Byrd in game six. You know that does that does say a decade it's seven lead at 75 to 80% give you a better chance. -- game six in in and just. Pretty much treated as the open game they -- I think he's going to have to get -- well. Sooner if it is just merely a repeat of game two but but but you know you've got to go with your -- in that situation.
Gordon tell -- why. The comebacks of 864. And 7 can happen again and then tell me why they won't.
I don't think that I don't feel okay about my -- It ended the big difference this -- I think is that. You know helped. I mean eight that the it was maybe a harbinger of of the night that you know before the game yesterday. The announcement comes to Mike Lowell is definitely going to have to have surgery men -- it was a surprise to anyone you know well could barely walk these last couple of weeks. And again I don't know Pisano what I wrote this morning guys. I you -- when you consider that most been hurting. Since before the All-Star break. Does -- surprise to anyone that this club's ops was up in arms when Natick started -- knee injury it was telling guys he wasn't going to play for at least another week or so. But. But with him that did not being Beckett. Ortiz not being Ortiz -- the components of the comeback just don't seem to be there. You know they Ellsbury doesn't seem to be that guy is going to give him the spark after having such a great series against in time. You know they have been there before and I guess that's the thing they're going to cling to but. They look like an -- beaten team right now.
Gordon needs in your estimation. Based on how poorly the Red Sox have pitched and how well the rays have pitched. Would many -- made a difference in this series in this lineup. I mean a difference of up to win some games here.
Me giving me these October track record it's kind of hi hey you know be a little bit depth foolish of me. Just sit here and they are not now many would have made a difference at all. I mean obviously. Ortiz is comfort level might have been different. To be sure you know he's obviously. Trying to do too much at this point. So we I mean sure of any could have made Bennett -- committee might take -- we -- out of out to -- performance in game two. Was this series changer. That he went three in the third much like -- fault. And you know -- you know stayed out there for fifty pitches three plus innings whatever wise. You know that's win and when the Red Sox had to get if they could have gotten their second win -- they -- certainly the position to and had opportunities to. And we -- shut him down. They have -- won on the game but. Would they would that mean the race wouldn't be leading the series that at this point -- maybe that's not fair to say either.
The it's Joel Sherman's reporting that the Boris is going to ask for a six year deal for the 36 year old Manny. You hear different reports TJ -- is reporting that Manny is now. Helping the blind to see out in LA so he really has. Brought a lot of the table we see it every night in LA. Where's the end up and how much is again.
Whatever he gets a percentage of the -- go to time reserved I've never seen such. One man rehabilitation effort here is that despite -- out in LA. Aren't on TER. You know inside music PI Pharmacia. He's not going to get it six here TO Jerry. He's he's he's going to get a four year deal. Someplace. And it could very well be LA but I'll vote you know I've got to think that's not exactly slam dock. You know they've fallen in love -- You know in the courts you're going to see all those people wearing those mini break in in that in this state as -- all in. And think long and hard about let him go but aren't going to take is one of the New York teams to get in -- I don't think he'll be Yankees but you know we all know all my arm and as well this guy forever. And you could see that that the Mets getting and it I think I need either the Mets series stays with the Dodgers.
Has McCourt not found himself pain in his somewhat of a corner here Gordon needs because he's told most of the teams with whom he dealt with he can't take on anymore salary there's no more money in the coffers get -- in -- or whatever man he's looking for is to unify that somehow.
Yeah I mean -- I don't think he -- yeah I don't think you know. No I'm not find any simply because he gets said at one point I don't have the money to do it. You know -- everyone knows that the Dodgers are big market team with with. With the resources to make that kinda deal. You think about the eighteen million that's still -- and Andruw Jones next year's the -- going to have to swallow a lot of little bit. But no they came -- they can afford him in the end and that won't stop him. From being in the -- there.
Opening day next year's Ameritech the stunning -- here in Boston.
Yeah I think so Jerry I mean obviously -- you know in its. He can see why you posing that question you know Jason's really. And limiting the entire year really there's just hasn't been an October thing you know that that -- to the airport. There's no catching up there it just isn't any pitching out there and and now believe -- Red Sox. Have been look and hide. All year put some alternatives but. I gotta think. You know -- leverage here isn't that isn't like Europe will Boris would like you know of course he's another Boras client. But I have to think the Red Sox are going to opera something like -- two year plus an option and now at least start next season with tendon in hope that they can get a young guy. In this system that that they trust enough to turn it over to eventually.
You feel as your former colleague Dan Shaughnessy wrote that he is that Francona. Has betrayed him by pinch hitting forum.
Now are you kidding I mean it and that's states now knotted -- I mean net to. -- Francona signaled his intentions one before he actually did it by adding a third catcher. To the postseason roster I mean that's why you do something like that. To put yourself in a position if you gotta win the game Jason understand I'm sure it hurt but both Belichick and SI understand. That that was a move that had to be made it.
Scored would you be surprised if sometime early to mid November we found out a lot more about David Ortiz wrist injury but maybe it's a lot worse than he let on the and they were telling us surgery might be required and that's part of what we're seeing happening here.
No I wouldn't be shot in the -- The one that I'm really curious about the one that I would expect that that will hear that. At some point after this season enters his we're Josh Beckett is physically and you know I don't think the visited a doctor Andrews. Back and obviously checked himself always was as innocent as innocuous as. You know the Red Sox and Beckett have made it out to be that you know everything's --
Do you think the pre pre date the -- bleak.
Are absolutely out. Yeah out already I'd. I I think there's there's more arm issue involved in India oblique issue. -- maybe wrong and and in this and the promise in -- who will probably in speculative yet because. Team as is as is -- want these days aren't very forthcoming about injuries but yeah I think there's more arm involvement in a plea care.
If if we ruling out CC sabathia and Manny Ramirez and probably Mark Teixeira. Give us a free agent that will get a phone call from the oh that will be on the Red Sox radar in the winter.
Well I I would think that there will be some conversations with Burnett. In Toronto. I would think that they'll still be looking around for a short stops. You know off the -- my head -- I can't think you know who's going to be out -- This year as shortstop wise but that I would think those those you know -- another pitcher. In that in and that they did a shortstop Bert are certainly positions that that the Red Sox --
A lot of -- is not the answer -- that they just feel compelled to change short stops every year.
After. Yeah I got a -- some questions about lotteries that end and that. You know. You know that the Red Sox. Approaches. Is that they they look profits out of that position. As as well as -- that's an eight year old body Edgar Renteria. Will be out there right Nigeria as as a free agent. -- but that I mean when you look at look at the catching. That's out there for example amid pudge Rodriguez is really in the same situation in in the same place in his career is as -- Beckett. You know rod rod sent tribe in big did you start I said that he would you can see the Red Sox going after.
Gordon needs a pleasure talking baseball with you after all these years of what's -- called quarantine. You know hey we are we -- Yes.
I -- getting along good with your former employer the Boston Globe house.
Europe you know I have absolutely.
It would root clear that in that regard to --
Hey hey thanks very much I appreciate your -- agreed on Yahoo! Sports compelling reading thanks Tom Gordon talked down the road. You gotta meant Gordon needs that Dennis and Callahan.
