9-15-08 D&H Talk Sox, Pats, and OSU Football

Yeah I was thinking about it on Sunday night here. As as we are kind of wrapping up the sports weekend and I thought how lucky or weak how fortunate their way. To live where we live to do what we do. On the station we do it on in the town in the region we do it and you know we got a baseball team that wins three out of four from Toronto heads for Tampa tonight. You know one game out of first in the American League east you know football team that's 2121. Straight regular season wins the backup quarterback. We don't care about college football and his counsel we don't even have to think about that how lucky are we that. You know we've got all let go on for us this weekend.

You feeling very philosophical. Today this week and was going on your -- it is not that. Hundreds of people it's people like -- it doesn't matter we don't care about college football in our town so it. You know this stuff backs so. It was their college game yeah has been -- got hurt oh yeah okay yeah I saw that the I saw. You know people were were referring to. As USC Ohio State game -- was Ohio Nicklaus the -- now I don't know where it further east I don't. Iowa now -- know your -- mix and got on Tuesday that it had had no idea have like it you know -- the Red Sox -- On Saturday night -- eight BA series this big football game to people were talking about I didn't see it have other things going on. I think go to Ohio State to -- I've never been to the state of Ohio before I mean you know Pete Carroll with that but again -- Terrell happy for him.

I don't see it probably put theaters where what that we've got our little Daylon -- Fantasy football league yeah in the in the obvious football challenge right. And each of our teams have you know witty little names like like that nasty daddy for everything that -- at Cincinnati Cincinnati. And and what -- you saw that Ohio State I have only seen two name changes for teams in the history of -- Now Peter King this week and change the name of his franchise used to be the Montclair or teases. But in deference to you know his new favorite player there and help them a player that lights that makes sense accents. There used to be at a league at team and our league called St. Jim tressel and I couldn't help but notice yesterday. It coached him --

Some nice things about it I thought I'd call my team coach Jim tressel. Nothing strange to me known. Dale this is how I'm going to get by -- info okay I have to pat this is how I have to give by active acknowledge it. I welter I hi I -- I it causes. -- no psychological. Discomfort. For me to it I'm I'm tired you know what I understand what America -- now I'm tired of I don't -- I hope they don't come back I don't want to -- rematch. We we need some things happen here no more.

I I will tell you guys in my heart I I would give you this little -- been okay we showed here on Friday. And and we finished Patriots Friday and we talked away athlete -- the Logan we have a wonderful time. You've just dropped to a three to the team you're trying to catch in the American League east. Tampa bay leaves town with a two and a half game lead. In all you do is go out and take three out of four against Toronto and they're here they're done like dinner and set yourself up where you head to Saint Petersburg tonight. Just -- game behind again it was a great job by the Red Sox over the week.

Well today I think. After watching the Red Sox over the weekend. As you said Toronto's done -- it was a great run by the Blue Jays system make it interesting for a while house and you this morning dale. This is why people like landlord -- picked the blue job ran it to pick the Blue Jays to win every year because. They see the the obvious talent on the team. The team usually has a run at some point in the season it's usually not the right time. Okay -- run. Like this at the end of the season they'll finish with -- well what will be 78 games out of first place. People see the high eighties. Win total and l.s day. Well at this team just adds one more -- they picked up another starter they picked up another bad they got another guy in the bullpen. Somebody's got to pick the Blue Jays to win AL least again next -- guess what it's not going to happen. They won't win because something always goes wrong for the Blue Jays -- not quite as good as people think they are and that's why. They never have the consistency that's required. Of a championship level team that's one thing for for the Blue -- but on the Red Sox and I think this is so impressive on many levels one. It is so fascinating. It interesting to watch Jon Lester grow up before our eyes literally have figured you know literally he is growing up -- eyes they can't hear advocated and and Andy Andy became smaller. During the course of battling it gently out going to say it it really how bad he feels like he became a man right. Right here in Boston because once you go through that. I imagine your perspective changes forever. And you're not just some minor league kid anymore who's trying to make it as a Major League player. You're trying to save your life you're trying to confront the disease so we have seen him grow up we've seen him deal with. I believe -- I think it's fair to say the toughest challenge of it's like absolutely. I can't imagine it's going to work -- and we've seen him grow up as a player you're remembered Jon Lester and his first year. I think Pedro had come back with the Mets. And I think he pitched against Pedro from -- but anyway that was a game where. He pitched in that series when Pedro was back against the Mets and he'd he'd do well for a while he'd wind up with five innings but over those five innings. He'd throw a ton of pitches he never really. Go to the line up a couple of times clean. And out to see this guy compared to who he was just a couple of years ago is really -- credit to him it's a credit to John Maryland's a credit to the Red Sox front office for rampage and.

Remember earlier this year when Tom Purdue team wrote the piece about one Jon Lester was becoming. And we kind of laughed because it almost seemed like hyperbole. You know one of the dominant left handed pitchers of his generation and then he actually added aura of any generation. You know numbers don't usually -- while Rodney Harrison about Brett Favre this weekend. Take a look at some of the numbers here -- thirteen in one lifetime against the American League east. I -- take a look at. His numbers after a loss his numbers at Fenway Park remember lefties can't win at Fenway Park. What is fourteen and two lifetime or fifteen in two lifetime at Fenway Park. I mean take a look at at at some of the things this guy has has accomplished already and it's in the process of accomplishing. His career winning percentage is ERA. We are seeing one of the true aces in the game it's awesome right.

It was great to see right now for the Red Sox and their fans. When you can throw Josh Beckett. Jon Lester and Daisuke Matsuzaka out here. In the post season you have this get a chance as anybody I don't think the Red Sox are going to be the favorites and then in the American League. You have to give it to the Angels their 81. Versus the Red Sox this year but. They have to convince me -- think the Angels really want to play the Red Sox soul. They went -- are they saying are they saying well this we're gonna make up for the last couple years. Where you have ended our season earlier than we wanted to -- and it's -- now we were 81 against you in the regular season.

We love to see you in the playoffs come on out to the big day I don't think so. Now and I don't think anybody wants to play them and I I do want to take one other quick moment before we move on a football which is our primary focus for the day. And I just wanted you know I'll give -- tip of the cap here. Tim Wakefield. Was huge Friday and -- I mean what a performance by Wakefield. A guy who was on again off again we all know you know what you get with a knuckleballer I even said last week I'm not going to be a bit surprised that he's not even on the playoff roster. Just because of the way things right all and how it works out. But you know talk about setting the tone you've just dropped two of three. To the team -- try to catch Toronto comes to town hot as a pistol and Wakefield goes out on crummy awful Friday night.

And just dazzled well yeah I mean he's had some. Truly great games this year in your right. I don't think is going to be tough for him to be on the playoff roster in the post season roster you got some things work here he got the the top three guys that I just named in the rotation. Then you've got Paul Byrd. Who's been pitching pretty well for the Red Sox -- mean where where does he fit into this mix you know -- go to what number five starter. In the playoffs. Serving at first round right and then. Then you're talking about the bullpen do you what Tim Wakefield coming out of the bullpen. In the post season is really going to be tough for him to find a place to be interesting debate between. I guess and it will be between. Wakefield or Byrd.

Yeah I think you're right and and unfortunately. Byrd doesn't require use it to change things up as much as Wakefield does the whole Kevin Cash thing I mean. You know you can't cat sheared right normal catcher your captain -- beacons in in relief you know you have to -- attack -- cash in. -- can -- to put Wakefield in a position. You know where their runners on in your bringing him in you know halfway through an inning you're scared to death about that. But I I really did want to make sure I didn't overlook what he did.

Right now I can't overlook you can overlook what he did you can't overlook where the Red Sox aren't are the call we got last week. And but Elizabeth call it was an email and I think the E mailer made some great points. Talking about the race and how the pitching staff wasn't set up. For the rays as it was for the Red Sox they had Josh Beckett. They had last year they had Daisuke -- on all their their their big guys it Tampa Tampa still won two out of three. And they clinched. The AL east in Fenway Park and we -- made two good points but let's calm down with a clinching the -- in Fenway Park because. If the Red Sox play well against Tampa. In New York does what he usually does against Noah is the Red Sox may well against Toronto in New York does what he usually does. Against Tampa we're talking about a close series. At the -- annually and we act in. New York has done very well against Tampa this year the Red Sox and their -- six at the -- But I'm telling. If they win tonight's game they will win the wind east. As a matter of fact I'm going to call. One game out. At this point there when the AL east it's amazing how I feel like. I haven't -- all year this is the stole an American League east championship. If you look at all the things that have happened to the Red Sox this year. For them to be in this position on September 15. To take control of the division is amazing.
