8-4-08 Manny and Jason Bay: The 1st weekend

So yesterday my my other partner Dave O'Brien says to me. Do you think on your very popular Boston talk show with Michael -- that people will be done talking about Manny Ramirez and I said I'll be curious to say now. As I said he wants one we -- first dinner together in fact before the show we went on the air and we were down there. -- Dhabi I was having of wonderful dinner that would ban portable. Oldest where it's obvious seven dinner. And and ice it and and and you said you know and must it's the talking about things sometimes. And I said we don't get to tell them when we're done talking about something they tell us. When -- gone.

A and if that joked he's. -- if I were you I'd swing that Wendell but yeah I'm and I'd work on that you -- now here over here with this very competently adamantly opposed to home. You're doing with them magicians here. -- vamp while Michael finds them like that. Like Callahan had -- for an order. And you know what we can't blame Callahan for this when he's not even around so. He's probably still hot tub this morning after. His weekend at pan mass challenge but we'll fix this one and you can use that one and will be back tomorrow.

They played great look none of us bought. When we when we said that they had to make this deal none of -- believed that Manny Ramirez wasn't going to play great we -- flagrant.

And I and I think what we talk about Manny. -- that old Boston cliche. Couldn't ring truer. Remember we used to say about Aaron's ceiling -- he was here the west coast guy grew up in the Pacific northwest. And the theory was the intensity. Of the northeast in Boston in particular just didn't jibe well. With -- and so when he went other places and he started winning games never had a great ERA but he did have. A few wins we always said. That would happen here I'm not sure that was the case may have been -- Feeley going to just better situation. But what Manny Ramirez. What he's doing now wouldn't happen here just because he didn't want appears very simple.

Now he wants to end his career there last week that I'd -- and Michael and and rob and I were just talking about this and and UN a UN I can discuss that as well if you go back to the trade deadline day 2004. And the fourteen trade that Theo orchestrated and you know Doug Mientkiewicz in Orlando Cabrera coming here and all that. I will agree that most of the time. If if the best player in the deal leads leads York team most of the time that's a bad that. There are times and I think that was one in 2004 where the best player in the deal left the Red Sox in the team got better. I don't know that that's the case here three games is way too soon to tell. But I think that's what they're counting on here and I think it's entirely possible.

Well three games in three victories yet credited. It's against the open -- and I'm going anywhere this year. But there's there there are few things you don't have to worry about with Jason -- One you know he's going to be ready to play. I mean actually out there wanting physically out there wanted to play mentally. Prepared to play. I think he plays need this is the goal way channel and one on the statement that he plays better left field. Manny Ramirez he does not hit as well as -- although he's not a bad hitter now. Amenities. And he's just cut above but you don't have to worry about a guy holding a press conference saying. This is outfield that's -- the organization should do what my option and they should trade -- they don't deserve a player like me and I'm tired of them. You don't have to go that you you may not be good enough after all that. But at least you can concentrate on baseball in the games are all you're talking about not talking about. The post season contracts. Who was offended it was wrong not talking about traveling secretary. Going to the ground. Any any other things that take away from winning --

I also understand that that there is the school of thought among many things and we've had a lot of the callers here talking about this who who say. I don't care whether you like him -- in the clubhouse. I don't care all I care about his between the lines when he when he's got the bat in his hand and -- between Illinois and I understand that. And yet I can also tell -- that that in the clubhouse it had gotten to the point where. Well I and I said this last week they didn't have a choice last batters. This was not -- in a -- to see if we get him to play the rest of the way. -- it it was not an option and I mean and and they were at the point where. There are times when you have to to trade a guy and date belt and I agreed with them that they had to trade this.

Well and just to go back to that statement. About not liking Manny Ramirez some teammates if if they just say they said you know he he's the guy drives us crazy we don't hang out with them. I agree with a lot of the fans who say you don't have to like that's not the issue his personality is not the issue.

Yeah he was not exactly out of the popular and I don't and I don't mean this in terms of just like or dislike. He just sort Kenyon did his job and -- okay that's why he didn't hang with guy is C you know they want to say hey man. Get -- I mean it wasn't like that with.

Right well they don't have to like coming that have to be likeable player to be a productive player but you have to show up once. We have to question whether you're going to be there or not or whether you want to be there. Then we have an issue but it is something and in this is. This might be a little discouraging. For. The parents out there. Who tell their kids. You know just go out there. You try hard you give your best all the time and and get things happen well you know that that's true in a sense. But look at Manny rumors.

It always gives his best of those numbers. I mean it just tells you how talented this guy was everybody who complained about it you made in -- bits in the knowledge rod Harden. You never knew of Yugo losing Mandy and many wanted to take days off. A guy. Who was that supremely talented. Doesn't really fall into that category I mean it it is it's rare. A lot of a lot of us 97%. Of us couldn't get away with some of the stuff he did not talking about double standards on this thing. You can't. Take that approach. To any. Line of work you're in. And be successful as he what he he is probably in the second or third percentile of people in the world.

Well and and I know that you can always take what what real people do for a living and comparator athletics and I understand that we use that line line. By the same token think of any work place you've ever been -- think of you guys listening to the workplace that you -- If you have a guy who's disrupting everything who's unhappy who is who is making it hard for the other people around him. Order to do their jobs. You can see where your employer of ultimately going to say you know what you got doll. I mean it happens in in every line of work and it's happened here at this radio station. With somebody who just didn't want to be here and made it obvious he didn't want to be here and ultimately. You know wasn't here anymore and and you know it it's happening in your workplace -- your workplace or your work.

But I do agree that the Red Sox overall you look at that you look at the picture you look at what was happening before it was traded the Red Sox are better team.

The interesting stories that came out me and it was Gordon needs final salvo as a member of the Boston Globe staff and it was a big. Gordon needs peace that came out in Saturday's paper. Which said that basically at the last minute at the eleventh hour at the twelve -- Many changed his mind and through his agent Gordon. Scott Boras. Said he doesn't want to gone -- he wants to stay and if you drop it a shot rob those two option years he won't be a problem for you the rest of the now as Gordon rolls and -- Exactly as president in other words and and it's the way the Red Sox took it according to -- story as well. The way the Red Sox -- it was so what you're basically saying he has all this stuff has been an attempt to get those two option years for a.

Where's my boy Benson -- not real from Manhattan law and order so you're telling me right now that. That's the reality.

Do you free agent he was -- shoot his way out attack I don't want you to pick up -- that they had that discussion and you thought about it. And elected history. And I and there's a difference I guess between not likely and put in writing that you want that's right just and it might take anything right and and from their perspective. I guess even if they thought there was a 95% chance that they wouldn't. Eyes -- does to but it was just fun it was fun to sit there. You know it was fun and a joke around little bit here in there and didn't and still watch baseball game and.

What ticket for me because I think. Part of radio huge part of radios just chemistry. And just. And is being yourself and relaxing and and whatever you do whether it's. A talk show like we do where the game. I thought you guys sounded like. You work together for two -- three all thank you.

I I call I mean that's what you always tried comfortable it's it was fun for me I I hope you enjoyed it he has. Michael -- I'm an embarrassingly large -- poly fat hog. I mean it was not a he would much prefer you sitting in the Booth with him I think that we can -- it's the first. You know like well I. It was weird at Fenway yesterday when little storm came through little mean east on at a thirties -- and see you know lightening outside though in this park it. And you -- they were serious when when their talent ready get out of the they're going up into the bleachers -- not get out there. Yet underneath and it just. Paul and everybody out of the ballpark little. Little wild over their for a little while yesterday but it was good weekend for the team exactly. It was exactly what they needed. The atmosphere is different idol fans. Think that that's Holcomb sometimes -- tickets -- play I don't think Indians. -- it was different. And it was I mean that you've been in locker rooms. -- clubhouse is where things aren't too good and you've been another ones where it's real good and it's just so much easier to go about doing your job when you've got a different this.

But you know what I bet all of those guys. Were doing the same things we -- You know after the game you know man he's on the west coast. Just checking here absolutely what Manny did and it's probably something new for the rest of the season. How many do today I would say I'm rooting for the Dodgers although I should.
