I know you hear this music come up when you think. It's October or it's Peter king -- is Peter and -- as. On October we checked in with Peter -- wild during the offseason and the the Monday after the draft is as good time is an all Peter how art.
Where that -- what I sure I'm glad I wasn't watching the the bottom of the eighth inning -- the ball yeah. -- and I occasionally I just looked -- discouraged that. And -- original one entering the sixth inning. And look great and a it was one bad pitch.
One bad pitch you'll Mora and it's over the wall you are paying attention because you were consumed by the draft right.
Was consumed by the Atlanta Falcons small things in your good friend Matt -- well it's funny I covered falcons this weekend at now Matt Ryan showed up. You know for people who were not. Hey you know leader don't follow everything that met him Matt Ryan does RBC people necessary even people who are. As he interstate thing I've found about this kid. And a very limited time I've gotten to know home a little bit and again I don't mean this to sound like -- he's going to be a pro bowl quarterback -- I don't know if he will be. But he's a guy who does just about everything right. And and I give me give -- good example it's about it's about 11 o'clock Saturday night. Draft is over didn't in the falcons press room write my story for Sports Illustrated in. And I dirty was in the building I didn't even know -- covenant and Hagerty was in the buildings right after the -- he -- and so they. Bring me back and ICM and I look at them. And he looked exactly the way he looked on television it you know cheat hours earlier when he is being introduced at radio city he would not on -- his tie. He hadn't taken off his jacket he hadn't taken off his sweater -- he had eight beautiful sparkling Atlanta Falcons will -- It is it in his lapel. And it's just. This guy hey it's just that very little snapshot of who this guy is but I found that the Columbine. When I left that might -- the somebody's -- I said this guy just in the way he presents himself the way he speaks is sort of quiet intensity. And again it's stupid to say it is at this point I'm -- this guy reminds me -- Peyton Manning off the field now -- remind me Peyton Manning on the field Woolsey.
Atlanta was very active in the draft so was Kansas City what are the chiefs try to do I don't get it.
Well the chiefs basically -- not been targeted achieved a lot of last month the -- Feel like maybe need twelve new starters on -- team.
That's all only too well.
They feel they feel like they've got needs literally all over the board. And so -- they did on Saturday and Sunday quite literally. Was picked the best guy they had at the positions they had desperate need for -- Branden Albert thing need to tackle offensive tackles not one. The step in that regard he'll come and play tackle at some point Dorsey. Classic three technique slashing Warren Sapp tight defensive tackle from all indications he's going to be real good player. Embree didn't break it flowers -- they got from Virginia Tech. It may be out on opening day starter -- close. And they needed changeup back and they have no idea what they got from Larry Johnson now the next few years -- beat up to be at 320 every guy Woolsey. But they've got a guy right now and Jamaal Charles who. You know a lot of respected people thought he was whatever ticket number 25 thirtieth best player in the draft so. Yelled hey it's like I said the team that I like this morning in my column. It's almost unfair to say you like the Kansas City Chiefs I mean who wouldn't like beat him city -- hit 900 draft picks but. I also think -- to factory in the fact that this team he gave away the best last year anyway the best pass rusher put also. I their enthusiasm should be tempered a little bit but they obviously have a good weekend.
I want to follow up on that point about Jared Allen had a great year he's had a great couple years there with Kansas City. Is it that they were disappointed with Allen or they just said this is the most return will get from one of our players and we just gotta talk about --
It was exactly what happened Michael Tucker Carl Peterson last week after this whole thing happen. It was very very careful in how he said this but I'll play the way I answered the past the question. And -- either way he answered the question and then he'll understand everything. My opinion as the Kansas City Chiefs were not going to make a guy. With two strikes against many NFL's substance abuse policy the highest paid defensive player in NFL history. What I asked Peterson how much of a factor did the two strikes play into. They're decision to let him go he said I have -- fiduciary responsibility to the ownership. Of this team. And what he was saying between the alliance's. I'm not -- and a guy and guaranteeing him thirty million box if he drinks too much 190 get stopped by the cops and get suspended for a year by Roger Goodell. And I don't I don't blame him at all I would have done any good.
I -- little while ago I was a little bit surprised that the patriots expended as high of a bounty is a third round pick. On a player I hope I never see where do you before.
Yeah that's a great great point dale I think military things that played in the here you know. In the draft a lot of times if you could do to draft a long time obviously Belichick and pioli would do in the draft for a long time. You know and they are two other teams. That worked out it is you know O'Connell -- is it is facility in San Diego there were two other teams that were interested and have a lot of times do you -- Sydney's feet shadows to some degree. And rightfully so they've been burned over the over the last few years occasionally when they say what we can get John doe in the in the fourth round and all of a sudden. John -- goes to the top of the fourth instead of -- have been at the bottom of the fourth and I think this is strictly a case about. -- at that point in time they weren't madly in love with anybody who they felt they had to have they knew they wanted this guy. And they didn't want to take this 30% risk of somebody in the fourth round pick and and such an idiotic thing is semi -- Very much kind of public knowledge I think everybody feels this way that. You know although Matt Cassel you know has been a nice player for them personally -- restricted at the end of the 2008 season somebody might choose to make him an offer pick coveted plane to give them a real chance to play. And it's probably not an offer that the patriots -- would either match or be wild about given them. And I think they also think this guy potentially to better players so you know who knows I mean it's it's one of those things where you just sort of he's just sort of say to yourself well you know the world we weren't the draft through and we didn't see any thing they got a pretty good track record EDU gotta give --
Buy out my partner here on Friday not only predicted that the patriots would move down in the first round he correctly predicted. That they would take to rod mail when they -- moved down that's tremendous heat up both of those right what did you think when they made --
I mean first of all the whole last week I did not know they were taken -- all but they'll all last week. There was one -- one I would just call around and say hey give me the middle of the draft giving you read. He talked to people what you say is I hardly ever say they're if you notice. To have the donut guy if I can't somebody Kansas City I don't say tell me you're going to -- I just go all around them because -- either going to picked. -- And and and Chirac male with a guy who I remember right -- in -- in I think around twenty -- it might mock draft that. One of the guys commented to me said 2050 said that I'd gotten half. And so that I started to think wow this guy he is is gonna go period -- the two guys. Coming into this draft on Saturday cool we're gonna go higher than everybody -- one was Derrick Harvey in Jacksonville on mister Rodman now. And -- obviously the jaguars as I -- this morning the jaguars had a you know how how can we get the Payton getting draft they trade it's six draft choices for two defensive ends in the top 52. And so you know that's what they did but it's hard -- mayo goes I think he's. One of these guys who. There aren't many what I would call potentially anyway playing making inside linebackers in at 340 cents. And that's really I think how I'm sure that's how the patriots fueled. And you know he's not your -- that your father's inside linebacker he's not Harry Carson you know a Stoner type run stopper. You know he's a guy who's going to be able to move around right I think he was a real good kick to replenish an area that gate. The patriots feel you could never have too many haven't beat they've obviously got tremendous agent that position.
You alluded to this earlier this a couple of minutes ago there were two teams that gave up a whole lot to move up one of with Jackson -- 126 to eight. -- with that Carolina which gave up a lot this year and next year to support that nineteenth about what it would what do you think the story is there.
I got the Sox. You know they were desperate to get one of those tackles what happened you know the weirdest thing is nearly you have. He yet evolved sort of the post draft analysis I'm sitting near my jaw drops in Atlanta when they trade up and take Sam baker nobody could have ever predicted that. Sam baker couldn't predict that he was working out of an LA fitness and Tustin California. Nine if you got any news it was going to watch the draft but he felt it was fruitless to be watching. You know in the first round -- the first turn he was working out walking out of the -- BA if there arena league commissioner. When his phone rang and it was a fact he was shocked everybody was shocked but. There was a run tackles and that's what led. I -- do what they did now. I wrote about this in my column today these some of the teams in the NFL are maniacal about this draft trade chart. You know which which a lot of people sort of live by so I figured out this Carolina basically treated. From from nowhere to get that nineteen particular that they didn't have. Uptick in the first round they just had their pick their expert in the second round so I mean they didn't. An additional pick the first round they've already taken Jonathan Stewart so they trade from the nineteenth pick to Philadelphia. And in so doing what was the incredible to me is. If if if you figure Carolina have the is going to be 500 experience say they're going to have the the sixteenth pick in the draft. Then what they did is they traded 1546 point to value. To get 875 point two valley which is about as a lopsided and NFL trade. It would draft choices only. That I could ever imagine and I mean the only other one that almost got done in this draft was so what I wrote about Monday morning quarterback today where. You know the -- of seriously thought of trading down with the ravens and that would have totally totally that would have made the entire top of the draft I mean so incredibly different that you wouldn't even recognize it today.
And I assistants jobs out as at this I know dale. He really wants to ask you a great question it's probably the most burning question you've been asked this up so stay tuned for that -- that want to make this point. For Carolina and Jacksonville teams moving up like that. Don't pay attention to what the colts do. And what the patriots -- these teams are are so secure they use you don't do anything that too drastic that dramatic -- they don't trade. But they're not Dole's established teams and competitive teams usually don't do -- stuff like that contract that.
Well look at it this way Michael if you beat the if you -- Jacksonville Jaguars and you've been playing Peyton Manning. You know twice a year you basically for the last whatever five years and he has the bane of year existence and every day you go to work saint how can we beat Peyton. Well sometimes after a while you're going to make a decision. That you could argue what that might be stupid it might be short -- it might be only for one team only are you might say we have to do something right now. -- yet I mean exact same level as the Indianapolis Colts so in other words this is the same thing two years ago. That the that the Houston Texans did when they pick Mario Williams instead of either -- younger Reggie Bush why did they do that. Because they're in the same division with Peyton Manning. And they've got a brother Peyton Manning twice a year four quarters Sunday for the same reason why Jacksonville did what they did -- it's stupid time will tell well.
That is different than Houston Houston they had the number one pick up and it would make a draft pick.
That's bloody but it's always ask ask this question remains out just remember one thing. You know I've heard not not ask ourselves this question I've heard the Derrick Harvey was the third player on his draft board. Now you know there are people who really there are some people who -- it's he's not their cup the team you know he's more. Of one trick pony type you know just the Enola you know pass -- but. You know that you -- if you don't get somebody. Who can run around -- you -- then you're gonna have to count on -- shoot outs with the Indianapolis Colts so. Could they kept those six draft choices. State where they were. And -- needed this so called safe picks in a beach in each spot they could definitely have done that would have been smarter. I don't think so I like what Jacksonville did -- like the fact that they they have a lot of young players at different positions they're not a an old team except maybe have a couple of spots Sunday and they got to think about. Rashean Mathis and and John Anderson now but you know I'd I think they acted boldly I I'd I'd like what.
There are appropriate questions in New York about how much -- George Steinbrenner still has over what the Yankees do or how much say he he passed. In Oakland made the call on Darren McFadden.
Oh well he's the only one whoever he's the only one on making -- call that organization it's so funny how this went I aired. About five days before the draft -- a coach on the raiders' staff. Told the coach and I'm close to put it in the bank were taken McFadden. And then. Job Madden came out and I heard this on the radio so I did not hear him say this. That John Madden came out to date before the draft and said there's no way they'll take him -- also told how we long. Last week there's no way they're going to take them this is again. I'm very hearsay issue this Soviet easier -- what I heard last Friday so I just -- well you know. They're probably not going to take McFadden and they took McFadden. So nothing surprises me and it's it's the classic. They know they always say to people when they try to find out what's going on in the raiders is. You're much better off making no phone calls. And not try to talk to anybody who knows anything about the readers you're much better off. Trying to think the way al Davis thinks the reason that I thought it'd be it would be Gholston is -- he's always been. -- size speed guy. -- sense and I thought it would not be able to resist a defensive end he's pretty fast. And it was a big guy 'cause in the past he has have been able to resist guys like that but you know he took McFadden.
We've taken Chris long he was there. Our yes he would have taken Chris --
How close was that trades happening is that what you wrote about you Baltimore you at three teams involved in.
Yeah there's three teams basically it just didn't know little about three hours before the draft two to three hours were involved when Nazr Newsom. Told Billy division any.
The news from the ravens general manager told Billy do any we will give you are one part to an hour for this year and -- three next year to move up six spots. Now the rams thought about this big they -- meeting -- and it and while they were media that -- that lets just called the falcons. And see if to ensure they -- then getting Matt Ryan they give us 48 pick in the draft for Ryan. Are you go to move up one spot. And Thomas to -- off Bob long and hard about this he went to a side room with rich McKay. Other former GM Varian with -- Mike Schmidt they all talked about it and it's is that this is a car that you know Demitra finished staff. About a month ago they're pretty sure they're going to take Glenn Dorsey. And then they went to Boston and -- we should talk about this -- this point out first. This trip to Boston and then to the capital grille in back bay. Convince them all of them. That when they got on the plane to leave Austin after that trip they said Matt Ryan is really special. And even though they love Dorsey and I still believe all the Thomas would not tell me decide believe that. Dorsey had eight at a slightly higher grade out their board. I think it was a situation where they felt like. They never get a chance next ten years to direct quarterback we feel this good. It's easily our most crying need we have to take them so they decided not to trade up. Because they were basically calling the block of the -- they didn't think Koreans would take Baltimore's offer. And -- didn't think Baltimore would raise it to the point where the rams would be forced to take it. And it turns out Demitra in what was his first real big draft day decision of his career. He was absolutely right he didn't have to surrender. The second round pick to move up but it sure in getting Ryan because he just said right where he wasn't ranked team to home but it was. Kind of a fascinating thing because I've beaten Goosen and his new his staff lost Matt Ryan in one of them badly. They were just unwilling to give next year's one to make this thing happen.
Where is Michael Vick and up now.
You don't know somewhere in two years. Somebody will take shot adamant two years.
Not Atlanta obviously.
Won't be Atlanta's now it's just too hot down there -- and quote -- to break in Sports Illustrated basically saying -- this week that we have the Milan and so had till till placed somewhere else and he will take an awful lot of fans -- them because -- Kuerten at the gate right now and Atlanta. And I don't believe universally the Matt Ryan choice will be greeted enthusiastically by the fans down there.
