Opening game of the season and -- strangest march 25 not always a march 25 -- march 25 at 1038 in the AM for us. For other people it's a little later in the evening I'm as a matter fact it's going out time I mean the bonds are still open until he aren't they -- Arnold.
If you parts yeah sushi bars and other kind of bars -- great guys to 1138 -- Thrown at -- have you adjusted what what's what's the story -- officially call it that you know I guess eventually you would but -- week will do it. And part of the problem is I keep trying to live in both times times zones here and there. You know trying to remember what it is back there and -- you better off you just come here. Develop that Japanese time zone and then just forget about Boston but it's hard to do we've got -- stuff back there and work back and forth and all kind of filling your first game today you know I'm still I'm still get the hang of it it was certainly more fun to do than. The pre season games where you feel like you're doing up patriots pre season game with you know 94 names on the roster and in that regard it's easier you know is a little more adrenaline flowing a little more at stake so in that regard it's more fun to. I'll get better -- and I got I got a ways to go yet and we've always in the enthusiasm of the Japanese crowds at baseball games -- you compare to any other sporting event you Benhamou and then in the way that they they -- a ball game. Greg the only thing I can think of is and I've never been to a game there but what I've seen on TV is Cameron indoor arena. At -- the only comparison I can make to what it's like here and and it wasn't that way for this game as much because they didn't really have a rooting interest as much. You know it I guess Daisuke but when you watch the Red Sox play against the giants are against the tigers here especially the giants game I mean it's it's craziness every minute they're up to bat. They're saying and songs and banging drums and blowing whistles it's a little -- in here.
I've seen the footage I mean -- and showed today. And Jerry Remy made the comparison to times square he said he did it did at -- record clean times square you can see that when he was on the street. Interviewing people where the translator of course what are your impressions of Tokyo what are some of the differences that you noticed right off --
It's the cleanest city I've ever seen in my life. And of this city as spotless. The people are are unfailingly polite now there is a section of Tokyo and I haven't been there yet but certain members of the media have that how was at that it was described to me. It makes the old times square looks like looked like a Quaker village now that's when you need to -- and I'm in California guy and you can you can you. Maybe throw out some names bill exactly what I mean you could -- and I when and how ha ha ha journalistic purposes which is why I'm going to leave their names out but but that now I don't even know which part of the city that is but I've heard about. This dissection of the city we're going to try to hit begins tomorrow our last day here. And that's more they said like rodeo drive you know high and shopping I think because simply -- spot like you know six to rate payers of 800 dollar shoes today while they were over there. Well I don't know why you go shopping there it's on not only -- what are you nuts don't.
RUE are you eating real food very leaning you're you're stand by American stuff.
We we we we went crazy one night early on in the trip. And and the highlight of of the meal that night Louis and let me make sure -- get this right. Marinated horse meat such team to which which means raw. Round up Bryant no thanks and and as somebody said to me after I described it to them they said. It reminds me of -- young Seattle's night I didn't I didn't think -- myself an important player I hope I wish I had that British group the guys know I was McCadam who thought that what do I wish -- I could take credit for it I've had sushi up to here I've had enough raw fish to last me a lifetime you know I just I just want -- up plain old ordinary hamburger yesterday and found one it. At this place near the hotel in the thankfully that sort of brought me back her little.
Let me ask you a couple things about the game what the hell happened JD drew he is having a great exhibition season -- a couple of exhibition games at a grand slam all the sudden we -- today. That he has a sore back math and I'm complaining but does wonder what the story.
What was needed today he took BP I watched him taken BP everything was fine while the pregame ceremonies were going on some of the Red Sox were out in the right field line. You know doing their sprints and stretching like they do before a game he was out their running with Kevin Youkilis. Everything looks fine and we didn't know anything and evidently he -- some that are pulled somethin'. Because moss was a very late minute addition of a lineup and the next thing we knew moss was front and out the first first base line that when I was watching him running sprints taking BP everything looked fine what was your ticket Daisuke beyond the first time. Well what's he got that you know what I think it is and he sold. It's all right I will use the term that he so inscrutable that the excuse me he's -- financial Michael said to me yeah homer off. They're valued I think in the same way I get it you know international timeout there and you're -- You want to try again but it's just you'd you'd never see any emotion you never -- unit received -- any thing. So you never know what he's -- I think he was -- I think he was nervous. You know he was coming back here to pitch you know in front of his home fans for the first time since leaving I I think I mean I've and I can remember last time he walked five guys in the game but I -- panel while once he got that that jitters over -- Overall his performance wasn't that bad five innings two hits two runs he gave up a home run -- he struck out six. Other than the walks and and they hit batsman the other than that it was it was.
That that particular day I was I was and -- a Greg a lot of people were off a bit today ME Daisuke was off for a while Joe Blanton was -- for a -- look at Papelbon Papelbon didn't give you the easiest ten the call did he know he's.
You know he started out fine and then he gave up the three straight hits and thank you anal brown. What the heck are you think and I don't wanna play don't -- ultimately he doesn't get picked off between second and third. Either the Oakland A's party want to we're still playing and one of the other. I think that there's no question -- I wonder what his explanations going to be an you have been down to that. To the clubhouse but will. Look at that look at the story society as it and yeah I'm guests and it probably is is one simple word in your -- because I can't think of another one and you look at phenomenal Corey can you imagine and a 262 games. Of the Oakland A's I'll tell you what they pay you enough to do that and they'll they'll couldn't I was thinking that when I did the pre season game for Cincinnati. And I was thinking you know what -- dusty baker get himself in four with the Cincinnati Reds and you know I mean Bob parents. Pretty nice guy by all indications and probably works real hard but you look at that team and you look at who he's got for GM and you figure it. Bounced out of their before the season's over with probably because they're not talented enough to win in. And you know Billy's not going to take any of the blame so somebody else's got to take the -- that's probably going to be Garrett Wednesday accusing Michael and I understand the argument is were in the office. Watch him and Damon and we both see obviously Houston's streak come out for the tenth inning and.
And Michaels why is he come and why would you bring him back makes no sense -- Michael. They're on national TV for may be the only time this season it's opening day. -- have been you know what are your best guy out there and and try but the Red Sox down 123 and try to win the game in the bottom of the well and let's look at it this way to who'd be followed Houston street -- Lenny Dinardo. I -- I mean would Jewell felt better about it if an article that started tenth inning.
Are going to game -- August going wants from Lenny Dinardo here in Boston the other people I saw -- underrated. The other side they're very underrated -- let me ask you this. Before the trip to Japan they were as there was lots of speculation why are we doing this some people were excited about it but. You hadn't seen it now that you're there can you seen the logic of going to going to Japan can you see the benefits of being their for the Red Sox and the openings.
I can see the benefits more for the Red Sox and the Oakland days you'd -- the only baseball fervor I've ever seen that that equals what I've seen here in Japan is when I was in the Dominican Republic. I mean baseball is being played on every street corner every open lot from little league through men's league through professional baseball it's everywhere this is a baseball mad country. And and their favorite team right now far and away is the Boston Red Sox partly because of Hideki but almost exclusively because of Daisuke. There's a Red Sox stuff everywhere you go everywhere you turn there's T shirts there's hats there's uniform -- the Red Sox aren't aren't necessarily going to make a boatload of money off this trip. But the foothold that they've gained in this country right now is huge both financially and theoretically in terms of talent.
On the road we'll we'll ask you this before you go club and you know -- Japanese. Sayonara that's it come while and I could -- trotted out -- wild pitches but I thought that deal to him that I learned Japanese I didn't. Yeah that I didn't know that's not me and I you're educating our audience right we go from inscrutable to bitches I I. Thank you Bob mentioned. Nice job -- they all par and I knew it what was I gonna do is and besides would you club and -- appointment in got a really good point but you don't get it all back to the hotel actually but doesn't -- can talk so much either they would be they would be repulsed or they can be -- I'm like oh god is his defensive back Adrian. Pickett had grown complacent can never had a goal and I don't know.
period is Doug understand that that most people in Japan they don't understand what he's saying when he's bringing with them and -- those christmas chorus. Broke from 1982 it's -- your record sport all the Milwaukee Bucks Dorado now that but delicately back in the seat next regret. I will be right there with well unless you guys have bounced -- because I've heard Dickerson sounds pretty good and he basically lobby for the gig a few minutes ago so there might still got -- I know I know he's he's like he's got lobbying for you get something Borden has got not applauding as -- I'm Donna and her awhile hasn't been here since October so he does one thing he's got another pretty good game going already although I was a little disappointed to see our team lost last night did you watch. No doubt that highlights in this and I saw sports that are in in English this morning which was a big highlight for me really now how how did you manage to do that. ESPN Japan occasionally will show sports manner in English not not not all the time here in fact most of time they don't but occasionally they do and then you know you try to load up Tito in particular wants all the NCAA results because he wants and how he's doing and his 74 different pool.
I think what -- is probably not doing that well let's he had Davidson knock him off Georgetown and he had. Western Kentucky and some of these other schools. He probably didn't have some of those he was very excited to -- Stamford won for some reason that meant a lot -- so he probably some other forward but the most money you know I don't entertain that entertainment Herbert Hill entertainment purposes only play -- great care from my Japan enjoy. Your night and good luck tomorrow. -- your second game. And I will CU when I'm back in that -- very soon. Our ideal -- well there traveled back and you recognize that voice -- Dale Arnold. From Japan
