In the AFC you who had had the good fortune we've had over the last seven years you look at them. --

You have but that's that's different worlds -- is it any different from the rest of the world looking at the patriots do you perceive it -- do what I went back I think the difference I think the differences. The Yankees I'm an observer baseball you just a fan you're watching and -- you hate the opposition. In the NFL we're all partners and you have a chance to be in the game not just as a fan but the team that you zone has chance to. It is it is to play and so. I think you look at the clubs it was like when we first came in the cowboys were great the joneses were grade and the cowboys with a team and you. I just remember aspiring you know there's -- and -- the it is those are strong words but there's there's. There's a feeling beat you want to get to that point and you're jealous is a strong word but I guess there's not a better word to describe so we're we've had this little run. It it. It feels a little good but I sure that'll run I'm sure we're going to -- understatement I really hope that the seventies the thing that our family talks about I mean when my dad and I were flying down here. We're talking about the game. And and how lucky we've been this big were really focused on in the game has team employed -- is but. Making sure we're doing everything possible. So that year in and year out -- in a position to be able to compete occasion not going to get to the Super Bowl every year but the worst thing to do. Would be faulted to fall back into Malays like the late eighties early ninety's were there what -- now we've had this success it's going to make it even. It's going to make a very bad for us internally I'm very bad for our fan base it is just too hard for people to fathom that but this team put together back to back to know one and fifteen and two in fourteen seasons back or back of him playing good we just can't let that happen and did it puts you on edge even more some people say. Winning might make too complacent but for us. It creates room for real edge and we'd be there anyhow because we want to win but. So I'm -- is that part and parcel of the type of people. But you would both lose coaches management players that guys that just won't stopping them were well of PP if there were people who who did they wouldn't be there very long guy in or people who settle for mediocrity with the NFL's that you can you guys know you've played. And I think it's even more competitive today because of -- happened free agency. And it if someone doesn't have the edge of their people in senior management that don't really have a desire to win -- to just happy to be in the NFL and have a job in. You mail it in nine to five they're not going to be there very long but it's who you're talking about. And -- the result was you hate the Yankees you more than not winning. You hate them -- New York you hate them but a lot of you don't have agent and we heard a lot of a lot of reds what. To hate the Yankees have the last Yankee dynasty is in doubt -- outside that wasn't the same as say the early eighties and seventies because. People around hitting a lot of respect for Jeter and posada and all those guys you hated possession -- jealousy.

I think jump -- it up with the Jones as they can work together they meet together they have to be being movies of miracle at the thing go forward but then there is. You know -- good deal -- guys would you look at Sony guy and guys say in my eyes right now on the ticket those drastic. I think by the you know I mean they got this monopoly -- that goes on but there's going to be there. Friendly pat on the back -- good Johnson. You know.

After the end of the regular season we were we were driving back to the airport and my dad and I were in the car and the phone rings and the joneses were Colin and there's very competitive. We're jealous as hell you know we can't figure -- we hate chip for doing it by congratulations it's a great accomplishment and and we're very close to Jerry and Stephen Jones and it was nice of them to make the call I think that was on -- because I think if we saw a team -- sixteen and now in the regular season. We say how -- yeah. It we still say I'd I'd I think it's so hard for the public at large who don't live the game David David -- you can to fully understand and appreciate. What those players and that coaching staff have done it is so hard to do. The level of competition is so great keeping the emotional -- of the team and I told somebody this the other day I think if we had a game after Indianapolis if we didn't have the bye week then. I think we would have been very vulnerable I think the -- we came at a great time and that some of the good what do you need to to to make it happen and and if you not to sixty you know it was a great accomplishment but it it was a nice fingers and it was a nice thing but -- that call was good but after the AFC championship game this year.

A lot less calls than usual if you really become -- model franchise not just to football what an all sports Steve was talking about the good hire certainly hire Bill Belichick was a factor getting Brady in the sixth round was a factor. But how much of it the success he's based on the discipline that you have that from the top to the bottom especially his in this day and age. Of salary cap restrictions. Free agency. And how sometimes you can get lord -- falling in love with that player that player and getting away from a planned that. If you don't one year which you've maintained this for a long period of time -- how much is disciplined plane into this.

Atlanta plays alive and I think that's one of the big reasons bill is here. Because win win win the first bill and Pete Carroll we're here we would ask them. For -- so Tacoma of the the big bear I column big bill but I don't when tournaments at all. To a deal -- losers in now I column Scott pioli is father I'm I'm. The one thing is and I think this is where bill and Scott really do completely separate themselves and we always felt that once we have it a little bit of taste it we saw Bill Parcells. And we committed this huge money because he fell in love with some -- and and and we structured deals in a way that he thought yet to do to get him here and it just it at a by the way I think he's learned also. But when Bill Parcells -- would Bill Belichick was here in the last year Parcells there were a lot of conversations that we all had. With him where he clearly understood that you. You had to mentally said -- value and then not chase a player in the market because of someone went above that value. They weren't getting getting the player even him more money wasn't a good deal was actually purse. And you're better off to go find another solution in do something else with your money -- always make sure. You're getting good value for your dollars in the -- to the marketplace puts a player over that. You can't go beyond it and we that's why bill this year Robert really believe that I believed it and he brought style with them and Scott believes it.

Do you feel that. Teams fall prey to the oh what's the public opinion going to be out there on the street -- give an example Adam Vinatieri was. As loved as any player even though he's not a full time player kickers looked -- to beloved is that's a lot as any player in this town. And yet when the money got to be too expensive you guys pulled the plug moved on now lot of people thought that was going to be a major factor. It is not then even a ripple out there in changing the fortunes basketball team.

And you're it's -- it's a great example. And I'll tell you the one area were lucky. If -- if Adam Vinatieri was on the team and was an exceptional pressure kicker put that team hadn't been winning and he was one of the real. Important elements of it. The end or they were building a stadium hadn't been in the playoffs you'd be forced to keep -- kickers -- weird example but let's assume it was Adam as we know. You would be forced I think a lot of team sort of a lot of pressure on the externally to sign him no matter what the price to show the fans we're committed to our court guys. And -- you've fallen to a trap and -- really dangerous with us there was a value set the four of us -- we talked about things. There was a value set when it went over that value in bill's mind in particular. He's a ticket and I I don't he was a -- that there's an awful lot for us and I like him personally. But in bill's mind you can get a guy like us cast you in the draft. Who literally under the -- is costing us about 85% less than Adam would have cost in the deal Adam wanted. And now you -- is is the 85% less of the kicker I don't think so. I think he's pretty close over the last couple years to the same guy Adam -- and now you've got all that money. That you can take it spread around him and and go do other things well are regular cars pocketed used to help market that we don't win pocket -- I tell people look Deion Branch is another great tastes okay. It -- is a great guy in -- added a lot of value to the team. But is Deion Branch worthy of being paid like literally a top five receiver in the national football -- We -- about this -- in real -- to agree that the big one that's going to use out of it at all and I don't know what I mean the good news is we talked about our offseason and I got its start somewhere in the -- a son -- on days a great. It's on -- is a great player but we're in the middle of the season when the season and we'll see but you're right -- end -- them being an example of a guy what are you you look at a player and and you figure out what the value is to your club beyond which you can you can take that money do something else with -- but in order to do that you have to have tremendous faith the in the people around you can't it is the scouts believe the coaches know of the money does the real. You got a tremendously moved us ambulance got. -- have earned that right and I'll pay I tell people. The story in the draft room in 2000 when we drafted Brady I. -- remember bill walking up to the board in the earlier rounds in the fourth round and said you know. He looked at Brady and we just didn't you quarterback at the time we a lot of other needs. It is looking Brady what's he doing here in the in the fifth round I had no we contemplated because he picked the card I've been looking goes. You shouldn't be here this guy's a winner -- so many other needs and actually in a way that shows the discipline to write because he was tempted. And he wouldn't let him Estes talking about it right I'm not we will let themselves be tempted and then in the sixth round you know it came to be in. Well not only that but he knew woody out because. He kept him around as a fourth quarter where he usually you don't keep for quarterback but he knew. There was something there you know -- built eligibility he knew him you knew in the draft from all parties he knew to his credit he absolutely -- an arm I remember my dad and I panel were our eyes locked in he can't really say. What's he doing you know and remember this was 2000 like you we had. Bledsoe just signed a new deal threes and bishop in freezer at the time. Was a really really good solid number two quarterback and every decision that potential I remember we're just stared at each other sort of raising our eyebrows but that's through. Whom would you start this.

Story keeps under and it's ugly it consistently this is going to I heard earlier this year they're loading up the patriots because this is going to be no politics last year whatever. It seems to me in in our D image of them. I think the guy loves it too much to walk away from it but I wonder it in all of the things you've just said in this interview about Bill Belichick do you ever. Get yourself concern and say all next year the year after that bill may walk away he may have enough.

You it again UP I think he clearly has the intellect and the ability to do it but I think he is his life is his clock justice summary deserves them. All runs around what coaching is about every. Every then he does it's one more in season it's one schedule when you're at a season. Depending on whether it's pretty come -- and pre draft to schedule is one way and I know he is like is immersed in it and he's most happy. My guys he's most happy when he's in that time his least happy time to me. Is when you see him in June when most people be excited you're going on vacation. But the the OTAs have ended the all the offseason workouts that presented he doesn't have control of the guys for about six weeks the coaches get to we've. And I think that's when he's at his most ornery and I think it's because the whole rhythm of it in the emergent -- is ending produces.
